    This really puts into perspective how crazy this game was. And 1993! I remember being completely floored by everything in this game and spent hours trying to master each course. And don't forget hitting the weird smiley center asteroids to get the special portal.

    Yeah, about those competition carts. Wonderful promotion for the game. 1st prize in it was a bomber jacket, along with some other goodies, 2nd prize was a Star Fox T-shirt, and 3rd prize and beyond was some stickers or something.
    I still have my T-shirt to this very day.

    • @darkridr25
      @darkridr25 7 лет назад +14

      Not really, no. The competition was hosted by Circut City, and was overseen by one of their employees. I barely even noticed him, until it was time to claim my t-shirt. I did have a few fans, though. Some kids were watching me as I released a bomb at a ship that hadn't started attacking me. They were like "aww, way too early!" Meanwhile I was whispering to myself "Go, go, go, go...." It detonated just as it started its assault. My timing was flawless. XD

    The first time I played Star Fox as a kid, I remember getting scared when I got to the end of the first Corneria stage and had to face off against its boss. When that warning beep sounded followed by "incoming enemy" and the boss' health bar appeared on screen, I nearly dropped the controller in fear watching the Attack Carrier come up from behind, looming over Fox's Arwing as it turned around to prepare for battle. Then I picked the controller up, started firing at it pretty much nonstop and I kicked its ass!

    The Super FX is great, but it wasn't one of the first GPUs. PCs had already had graphics co-processors for two years before the SuperFX, and that's only in domestic applications. Business workstations had had them since the early 80s.

      Yeah but the incredible thing was they were able to get it onto an affordable home console. I remember when people were psyched about phones finally getting 4g of ram a few years back so they could play decent games in spite of the fact that PC benchmarks have been at 16g of ram for years prior. The point is the innovation allowed kids to access that power without needing their parent's entire paycheck.

    Starfox was one of he few games that, at the time, realy made me wish I had a SNES over Genisis as it realy was something different rather then just a better looking game. I used to ride to a store over half an hour away on my bike just to play the demo station there and when the competion came around to that store, I was good enough to get second place in it over many that owned the game.

    I know it was never released but I think that Starfox 2 is my favourite. Im not sure why but I think its just the fact that I have to fly around the Lylat system defending Corenria from missiles and stuff. It was just such a cool idea. You don't even have to beat the game if you want, you can just defend for as long as you can if you want. I wish the game had been released, there is so much replability in that game since enemy's and timing on missiles are all random.

      I wouldn't call it underrated. It's just kind of been over shadowed by Starfox 64, which is undeniably better. The original is still great though. I picked it up a few weeks ago and it still holds up which is more than I can say for a lot of early 3-D games.

    • @karnagefails333
      @karnagefails333 6 лет назад

      Its very far from underrated.
      I'd say its the best one seeing as how they fucked up the controls for every one that came after it (yes, including 64) and mangled whatever semblance of story they had going.
      When I was in school no one would stfu about it which was fine because it was a distraction from the Mortal Kombat hype lol

    As far as I know, the Super FX chip did not actually support the Super Nintendo CPU. Instead, it rendered the 3D graphics and cut each frame into tiles, which the Super Nintendo handled as normal 2D Images.This is the reason why no Super FX game aside from Yoshis Island has a smooth framerate / full screen drawing. It's not a lack of power in the Super FX (2) chip, but the bridge between rendering the full picture and breaking it up into tiles that takes too much time.

    Sheesh, I remember one of my classmates in Kindergarten copying Fox McCloud's SSB64 taunt. I always preferred the N64 title due to the smoother framerate. Plus, Andross's appearance in the SNES title creeped me the hell out. But, overall both games were great. This series and F-Zero were pretty successful back then.
    Given how successful this Star Fox was in the 1990s and the whacky Star Fox comics that Nintendo released, I would've loved to have seen Star Fox get some hilariously cheesy Saturday morning action cartoon. It probably would've been like a number of "Ninja Turtles" superhero style shows like Road Rovers, Street Sharks, or Cowboys of Moo Mesa (rock music, standard good vs evil plots, "role model" good guys, moronic villains, cheap writing, blatantly obvious moral message, meant to sell merchandise), but then I'd have one more action cartoon to nostalgically laugh about nearly 30 years later.
    That was a missed opportunity. But, anyway, Star Fox as a series is full of missed opportunities. just like Crash Bandicoot.
