I am so going to break out my emulators tonight and see what I missed when when the Star Fox games came out in the 90's. I grew up as a gamer but got so immersed in music production during that time that I turned a blind eye to all the exciting things going on in the world if video gaming. Thanks for doing this excellent review of the Star Fox saga.
They also used some features of Star Fox 2 in Ocarina of Time; Majora's Mask. In Star Fox 2, whenever you hit a switch or destroy a particular enemy, a door would unlock, with the camera showing the unlocked door, and panning back to you.
You can see right at 0:26 is nearly the exact design and animation of OoT's fire temple boss. no wonder an arwing ended up in the coding of that game, they were very close in production!
Canceling Star Fox 2 was probably one of the biggest blunders made by Nintendo at the time. There's no doubt that if this game was released, it would've sold millions. Heck, I would've bought it for sure. The excuse of "being embarrassed about releasing a super nintendo game" is total BS if you ask me. Miyamoto was and is a great guy, but he was just totally wrong making this call. Thankfully, at least we can play it on emulators. I've beaten it several times and it's great fun. Whoever leaked the final build of the game deserves a medal.
I could be wrong but I don't think the final version was ever leaked out :( The best we ever got was a beta version and some fans polished it up and translated it. I'm glad we still get to enjoy this game though. I wish Nintendo would release the final version on Wii U Virtual Console.
It looks like this video needs a follow-up, because in 2017, Star Fox 2 saw an official release, but not on the real SNES but the "SNES Classic". I've also heard that it is a typical ROM, the ones commonly distributed online, and not some sort of port or remake that would otherwise make it harder for the emulation scene, that Nintendo despises.
I think the idea is that since the first game was so popular, they wanted to use the momentum to boost sales for the N64, as they were going to stop supporting the SNES in just a few years. The plan worked since Star Fox 64 was a killer app. Titles released past the date where the main company starts focusing entirely on the new console are meant to be safe bets, something that if it gives a of return, good thing, and if it doesn't, won't have any real lasting consequences.
This is a great follow up episode! I had no idea that star fox 2 even existed! Totally need to try it out sometime! Can't wait for the next episode! Awesome job!
I understand the decision to cancel StarFox 2 in terms of the console race.. but dammit Miyamoto. you royally fucked over the StarFox franchise twice. TWICE! all they had to do was push StarFox 64's release a year or so, let the devs polish and spruce it up more while StarFox 2 had the spotlight for a little. Or why not just release it anyway despite 64 being announced? the gucking thing was finished! that's literally money Nintendo poured down the drain and wasting the devs time and work on it.
I played this game on Nintendo Switch Online. It's harder than the original because you have to keep thinking about what is going on in Corneria as you're fighting on other planets and ships. Leave Corneria defenseless, and players get the "Bad Ending" and a disturbing cutscene to make them feel guilty.
Argonaut games actually got screwed over pretty bad by Nintendo. From what I've heard, after the cancellation of Starfox 2, Nintendo scrapped a 3D platformer project of Argonaut's starring Yoshi, and ultimately stopped working with the studio. Nintendo apparently kept the engine and reworked it into Mario 64, while Argonaut had to rebuild their ideas from scratch to make Croc: Legend of the Gobbo's on PS1 and Saturn. I forget where I learned this so I can't really confirm it, but it makes sense
I don’t think the former developers from Argonaut Games held too much of a grudge though. After all, according to another video I saw, when Nintendo released the SNES mini, along with Star Fox 2 officially being announced to be on it, they were all celebrating and drinking beers and cheering.
It's crazy to think of how much power Miyamoto had on certain projects back then. The game appeared to be poised for a release but dude just said "nah."
Yes! "Videos about games" just doesn't cut it anymore. I myself currently use 4 categories: 1. Gameplay: contains mostly gameplay footage 2. Review: Tells people if it's good or not and raises specific issues about the game itself 3. Academic: Video about a game's history, impact, cultural importance and the like. Doesn't have to be limited to one specific game. I categorize this video here. 4. Music: Contains just the music of a game.
Not only did it get released on the SNES Mini 2 years ago, but now StarFox 2 has been released on the Nintendo Switch bundled with the Online games subscription.
Few places like Etsy (where I got mine), or you can make them yourself. Or the best option to play it on original hardware overall is probably a SNES Everdrive and download a Starfox 2 ROM.
Who else is here due to excitement from the snes classic??? When I heard star fox 2 was FINALLY going to be released it made me think of this video, because this video was the first bit of information I've ever heard of the game. Wow. Guys here we go. What a fucking time to be alive.
Thomas Davis That'd be nice. And the on foot sessions I don't have a problem with, but they're exactly like the tank, just not in it. The hit detection was horrid. It needed a lot more polish in that respect. It would have done wonders to give it a cover system or some such to make it different than the other variants instead of just shooting a different color projectile at things.
+NewController01 If memory serves, both Command and Assault have pilfered ideas from 2. Shame it never got to be the one to 'define' those concepts in an official capacity.
The story of Star Fox 2 is so sad. I heard that in retrospect, due to a delay on the Nintendo 64's release, Nintendo probably COULD have gone ahead with the release of Star Fox 2, but hindsight is always 20/20 as they say. I remember my friend showed me the ROM of this game, and I was super excited because I had heard of it, but never seen it. I liked how they reused so much of the game in future titles; like how the walker mode was the likely inspiration for the Landmaster, being a land vehicle, the existance of Star Wolf, who went on to become main-stays to the series, and even the strategy-shooter hybrid concept being the focus of Star Fox Command.
We'll think about it playstation was out and nintendo wanted to focus on their next system Meaning if the took out star fox 64 and then starfox 2 people would have get confuse
I agree. They wasted all of that money. Just because you have a huge chunk of it doesn't mean wasting it is wise. They had already put in so much effort on Star Fox 2 that they would have been better off releasing it especially so fans of Nintendo might have a game to play if they couldn't afford an N64.
If I made a few custom chips for the SNES/Super Famicom, I'd like to make a "Mario 3 (Super FX 3)" chip so the console can handle texture mapping and shading, plus maybe a 2nd Mode 7 layer. Also, a 2nd sound chip to supplement the SNES's original sound chip.
they should've released both, star fox 64 was a re imagining of the original while star fox 2 was actually a sequel so storyline wise it still makes sense
If this game was released back in 1995-1996, what would the StarFox Franchise be like today? Would we have gotten StarFox 64, StarFox Adventures, StarFox 64 3D, StarFox Zero, or even Starlink
this videos are just great i saw the first one and it was an instant subscribe, you are an awesome dude and keep those videos coming because we are hungry!
as sad as it is that star fox 2 didn't get release, i do understand nintendo's decision. thanks for covering star fox 2 and it's history and looking forward to part 2 :D
This video title on here, if not some edited pop up over the beginning really needs to be done, if not just a whole part 2b because Star Fox 2 arrived on the SNES Classic Edition. There i no more 'never was' as it's here and was worth the wait.
Having finally been able to play the game, I can see the series taken more influence from it than I would have expected. Star Wolf, as is commonly known, was introduced in 2 but recycled into 64. But Command reused the flight map mechanic (with the addition of fog of war and limited fuel which made it far less enjoyable), and Starfox Zero feels more like a reimagining of 2 than it does of 64. I really enjoy this series, but I sincerely hope we get a sequel for the next game. Maybe something like Adventures but in the new continuity.
I know it's old now, but hey! We got Star Fox 2 finally! Never really cared about Star Fox until the SNES Classic, guess I should thank that System for introducing me to the games, they're fun! 😁👍
I'm trying to imagine this conversation at Nintendo 20 years ago: "Nah, let's not release Star Fox 2, but instead focus on the Virtual Boy." This is example of dropping the ball and the defense picking it up.
Oh and wanted to say, I've watched a lot of Starfox2 vids on RUclips. This one had the most info that I've never known before. No wonder I subscribed. I really like your delivery. You are so sure of what you are saying. Totally opposite of how I am on my stuff :P Great vid.
I really enjoy your videos. They're very informative and I always learn something from your videos, but I really don't like how they're separated into different parts. It just bothers me when I like what I'm watching and want to learn more about what's on it, like Star Fox, and then I have to wait a while for the next part to be made. Why not make a full video instead of putting them into different parts? Apart from that, though, I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!
It's quite sad that star fox 2 hadn't got an official physical release, perhaps it would be wise for nintendo to release it on virtual console, I'm sure the people who fixed up and translated the rom wouldn't mind nintendo having their version like the mother translation people have.
The reason this game was cancelled was because the Playstation 1 released and Shigeru Miamoto decided not to release Star Fox2 as it's 3D visuals were primitive compared to PS1 so Nintendo decided to just scrap the game and produce Star Fox64 instead.
Here's something I am surprised hasn't shown up on the Virtual Consol, it couldn't take too much to put the finishing touches on it and put it out there and it would be the first time they could make up some of the money back on it. Hell, they could have put it up at a premium since it didn't get released before. It would likely be one of the only games I'd get there since I'm not a fan of having my games tied to the console.
Fast forward even more to 2015, at E3 Nintendo unveils yet another "new" Star Fox game that melds aspects of Star Fox 64 with even MORE elements of the lost Star Fox 2, including the transformation of the R Wing into the walker.
I realized a pattern about player preference when it comes to what is the "best" game in a franchise back in the 90's. It seems to me they call something the best because it has an element that makes it very different from the rest, and yet familiar. For example, Star Fox 2's strategy element, and Fire Emblem's Judgral games that had feature that weren't in the other continuities.
It was never given an official release, but its rom was leaked in a near complete state on to the internet. He explains this near the end of the video. With a little bit of searching, you too could play this game. It may not be entirely legal, despite the circumstances surrounding the game, but you could do it.
It was now. Changes to the dialogue, a new logo, and possibly some other changes, and badabing badaboom. It’s on the SNES Classic, and Nintendo Switch Online.
The Star Fox 2 episode needs a serious update Its the only Gaming Historian episode I can think of that is really aging BADLY Historically & accurately. Not only the official final rom of the game (finished in 1995) was relseased on the SNES Classic 2 years ago. 2 Alpha builds were discovered around the same time. And now Star Fox 2 is finally getting a true Console release on the Nintendo Switch via the SNES Online streaming service on Dec 12. Who knew we would see the day, Star Fox 2, the former holy grail of canceled/unreleased games would be in the hands of all Nintendo gamers before Mother 3... Hahaha
I like the idea of landing on the ground and traversing it in a mech transformation of the Arwing at will. I hope Nintendo does something like that for Starfox Wii U.
Now we can call StarFox 2 "The Game That Finally Was." It's included on the SNES Classic, the first official release of the game anywhere.
Lord Fendleberry: and don’t forget the switch
It’s also included on NSO now.
Star Fox 2 finally will be officially released!!
When?
On September 29th, 2017 along with the SNES mini :)
Thanks

Rountree1985 why are mad idiot
anyone else rewatching this after the reveal of stafox 2 finally being released on the snes mini?
no
2 years later
@@colebrown8293 fuck off prick
Me, i think, i also beat the game 3 times or 4 times
Star fox 2 was also released for snes online for Nintendo Switch

Little did we know, Star Fox 2 will finally get a release on the snes classic
And 2 years later and it's on the Switch's SNES Online.
Now we just have to pray for the N64 mini classic to get release.
Now, with the release of the Super NES Classic edition, the final build of Star Fox 2 will see the light of day!
Yay!
ryan rudnick it's the same as the leaked version online
@@TheFEARSlayer01 Aside from a few changes to the dialogue, and the obvious logo change, yeah. It pretty much is.
star fox 2 is my favorite game in the series, I've played it on an emulator.
too bad it never seen the light of day
Yea I agree starfox 2 was great but it wasn't the best in my opinion but it's pretty good 😄
DrShoe Canpyrotoo i played it on an emulater too it was great
+DrShoe Canpyrotoo could you tell me where to find it? not every rom calles "starfox 2" contains the full version right?
Luckily they're bringing back some of the ideas from that game in Star Fox Zero.
Shoo hoo talk to me now
"The game that almost was" is now "the game that's 22 years late" :-)
Better late then never i guess!
I got a Star Fox Zero ad on this.
They also used some features of Star Fox 2 in Ocarina of Time; Majora's Mask. In Star Fox 2, whenever you hit a switch or destroy a particular enemy, a door would unlock, with the camera showing the unlocked door, and panning back to you.

There were 3 beta versions. Story mode beta was the closest to the final product and is fully playable and translated.

Nintendo has aong history of betraying partners & should be careful should they choose to double cross microsoft.
Which at least explains why both some of my favorite games as a child were made by them.
Obvious lie a snes code is not compatible with with a n64 and that yoshi game complety different from mario 64 it was a racing game
I don’t think the former developers from Argonaut Games held too much of a grudge though. After all, according to another video I saw, when Nintendo released the SNES mini, along with Star Fox 2 officially being announced to be on it, they were all celebrating and drinking beers and cheering.

And Ideas from Starfox 2 are now being used in the upcoming Starfox Zero for the Wii U.
NewController01 Good, the games have gotten so stale since Star Fox 64. The scenes where you're not even in a vehicle are always a drag :(
Thomas Davis That'd be nice.
The Stafox 2 looking like GTA 5, if it was on PS2 and looking same as on PS3, but with just lower resolution, which is amazing
So your going to spend all that money to develop and market the game and not release it when it was finished. Makes no sense.
We'll think about it playstation was out and nintendo wanted to focus on their next system
Meaning if the took out star fox 64 and then starfox 2 people would have get confuse
At least nintendo has a huge junk of money
I agree. They wasted all of that money. Just because you have a huge chunk of it doesn't mean wasting it is wise. They had already put in so much effort on Star Fox 2 that they would have been better off releasing it especially so fans of Nintendo might have a game to play if they couldn't afford an N64.
Seems like it was not wasted.

I love these classic videos 👍
Timeless

Geez you kept us waiting lol, but worth the wait...great video, can't wait for the next one!
Star Fox 2 and Resident Evil 1.5 are probably the most well known mostly completed cancelled games.
Gaming historian you are an awesome as dude I gotta say- I love the facts and stories you say on the games I grew up - thanks for being so informative
I concur.
And now, the cycle has been completed with the official release of Starfox 2 in the SNES Mini ! ^_^

I'm going to play the official release of this Star Fox 2 tonight, I know this video is quite old, but I'm glad the game was released today.
they should've released both, star fox 64 was a re imagining of the original while star fox 2 was actually a sequel so storyline wise it still makes sense
Star Fox 2 was first shown in 1995 but was canceled and was never released, so Star Fox 64 was a sequel to Star Fox.
If this game was released back in 1995-1996, what would the StarFox Franchise be like today? Would we have gotten StarFox 64, StarFox Adventures, StarFox 64 3D, StarFox Zero, or even Starlink

Star fox is my favorite Nintendo franchise. With this description of the sequel, it sounds like my favorite overall franchise... Mass Effect
I haven't finished the starfox, sonic, or mario series of these videos cause they're cut into four separate six minute clips for NO REASON
If they end up making an SNES plug and play similar to recent NES plug and play, this would be a memorable addition.
Are we getting a follow up video now, since they announced that the 2nd Game will come out ? :D
And now, 22 years later...
Love how starfox 2 is now released! :D on the snes classic!!!
Something did happen in the first half of 1996, I was born :)
Good thing people can make repro carts for Star Fox 2. I'm going to get one eventually.
This game actually reminds me of Star Fox Command Mission for the DS, at least the strategy bit does. I wonder how the two are connected...
Two words SNES Classic
Super FX 2 didn't offer any more memory or other new features. It was just clocked about 2x faster.
It's quite sad that star fox 2 hadn't got an official physical release, perhaps it would be wise for nintendo to release it on virtual console, I'm sure the people who fixed up and translated the rom wouldn't mind nintendo having their version like the mother translation people have.

This may be off topic. but you should make a video on what happened to rareware.
And now, twenty something years later, we are finally getting Star Fox 2. Nintendo took their sweet time
It's a shame that Miyu and Fay never had a second chance on the franchise.
Nintendo should release Star Fox 2 on the eShop like how they released EarthBound Beginnings.

With a little bit of searching, you too could play this game. It may not be entirely legal, despite the circumstances surrounding the game, but you could do it.
It was now. Changes to the dialogue, a new logo, and possibly some other changes, and badabing badaboom. It’s on the SNES Classic, and Nintendo Switch Online.
great videos.I still have that issue of EGM.keep up the excellent work.
I've played through my sf2 cart about 10 times now. I like it a lot.
i loved star wing and star fox 2 got even a german translation. i played it and i loved it.
James Best well, you got it dude. :)
Looks like now it's time for a follow up.
if you have a snes classic edition you can play star fox 2 if you complete the first level of star fox
