Thank you for taking us inside Jackson’s store in London. Today I went to their store in Gloucester. It is smaller and they don’t have as much stuff in their shop, but the warehouse for all the online orders is attached so if there’s anything you want from the online store that’s in stock they can go and get it for you. They were so lovely and helpful so I really recommend visiting that store if you can. I feel extremely lucky it isn’t far from where I live!
Yayyyy I was hoping for the Jackson’s tour! Do you know I never realized it had an in person presence until your community post? 😂🤣Excited for this one!
I made a watercolor book and glued my cut up Daniel Smith dot cards to the pages. This allowed me to swatch it out a little bigger. It has been super helpful to see what I want to buy without buying "too many". I look at it pretty often when I watch Dr. Oto Kano's videos or any of those other awesome videos. Thank you for sharing.
Watching you 2 yrs after your posting! Definitely, the dot cards from DS is a must. It is the first dot cards I got when I started with watercolor and I learnt so much. The paint is as plenty as the Schmincke dot cards which I got later on. They are both so valuable. I hope you share this opinion after being 2 yrs!
I was totally surprised by the store. I love Jackson’s and I was expecting a massive warehouse! I need to go there the next time we go to London. My list of art stores all over the world is growing! Jess Karp mentions Blackwing pencils in one of her videos, recommended by one of her teachers, for its variety in tones in one pencil, able to emulate B to H pencils. I have a couple and I’m afraid to day that I’m not a good enough sketcher to notice. You mention how you like the feel of the Hanemueleh papers but do check weight (typically 200 and not 300 lb) in the sketchbooks - which is fine. Just be aware. I find my dot cards useful when making color choices for a painting. I only have dot cards for DS and W&N and if you think DS is skimpy, then you will definitely be disappointment with the W&N dot cards. I thought the DS was generous in comparison. They are placed on watercolor paper so you can swatch directly onto the paper. Happy early birthday! I hope you get tons of gift cards and can take us on another haul! Lol!
Also I think you’ll love schmincke! They’re beautiful, but just be aware they’re not vegan, if that’s a consideration for you. I’m going to be doing a couple of swatching videos of the schmincke super granulation sets 😍😍😍 I have a set of their normal paints that my brother got me and I love them
Nice tour, ty. I want that mini block of paper, yum! 4x5" is a great size to try new techniques and paints. I haven't browsed Jackson's site yet but your haul has convinced me to take a look. Have to wait for payday tho 🙃
Loved the video. The store felt very cozy, with nice stock. I've never seen dot cards before so I was very curious about them. Can't wait to see how the actual swatching goes in a future video. Hopefully there's enough on there to make some good samples.
I made it to the end, but I already have many of the items you listed. Happy Birthday and good luck on reaching 1,000 viewers! I have Daniel Smith dot cards and find them very helpful
TBH it was exactly what I expected. Their packaging has that elegant but efficient feel to it. I imagined a very organized but functional space with lots of blonde wood ... YEP! I cannot wait to go to London again and visit the store in person. I shop from there all the time and they are very good with shipping to the US (often better than US based stores).
I love the blackwing pencils! Its definitely like a luxury art supply (As i have plenty of other pencils that work very well), but there is something to be said about using a good quality, nice feeling pencil. They smell really good when you sharpen them, and lay down really smooth. I use them most of the time for sketching because i feel like they just produce a beautiful line. (Although my go to for travel is still a mechanical pentel graphgear - cant beat the ease of use on the go). I have a set of the vintage ones my brother found me at a thrift store, and they are what got me hooked. Are they much better than a normal decent pencil? Not really, but they make me want to draw more so I consider that good. And like a weird positive? I like that the end of the pencil looks different, I keep them point down in a cup with other stuff and they are really easy to differentiate from the other pens and pencils.
The Blackwing are beautifully smooth to use ( downside is they go down quite fast, especially if you like them sharp) but they are lovely to use. The dark grey is the hardest, and Pearl white like a B and I’ve not used the black but think like a 4B. Certainly worth buying a couple to try. They are very pretty too . I didn’t know Jackson had a physical store either, so thank you for your.
Unfortunately I missed your premier which I wanted to watch so much, but my son wanted help with homework ☹️. Anyway, I think that my favourite things from this haul are two, the Schmincke dot cards and the Turner Acryl Gouache. I'll be looking forward to the swatches of the Schmincke dot cards. 😊 Thanks for this video!
I'm so over DS. They are so expensive but when you put them in pans, they shrink noticeably, which means you're getting even less paint for your money. I just ordered a 12 pan Schminke set & a 12 pan R. Szmal's set from Jackson's that I cant wait to try. (It's currently en route to me and I'm in the US.) I appreciated your honesty!
I hate that I missed the premiere! But this is so much fun, I loved coming with you on the commute, and I love how much time you can spend in art supply stores! I would have been looking for those Schmincke super granulating sets! @JudesArtdesk LOVES the Blackwing pencils and actually did a subscription box of just Blackwing pencils! OMG happy almost birthday :)!! What a sweet idea on that postcard set, that is adorable! SHOW YOUR SUB COUNT LADY!!! :) I'm so glad you got the Liquitex, I can't wait to hear what you think about it! My wishlist has the Volcano yellow and Volcano red from Schmincke!
Thanks for the art tour. I can't figure out the black wing pencil attraction either and also the color erase pencils.....thought it was just me as well lol.... Holbien gouche is good to use as well they have lovely colors and lay down well so worth adding to your stash when you can get your hands on them. A thumbs up from me and a new subscriber.
I have the big Daniel smith dot card and like you I thought the dots were too thin for the price. I have used the dot card though and it is more useful than I initially imagined. So I hope your experience is more positive in the fullness of time. I did enjoy seeing your unboxing of Jackson's art supplies.
I was expecting a huge warehouse too, tbh! I've only ever had the really small Daniel Smith dot cards, they're only £1 (if you're lucky enough to see them while they're still in stock) but they did help me figure out which colours I wanted to spend money on. I never know if some people use the dot card itself to swatch on or not. After all the colours are already written on it for you then.
I really enjoyed this video. I falsely assumed that Jackson's had stores scattered in various UK cities. I love their online selection and have spent hours online looking at it . No where in Canada, is there such an amazing selection of materials. I can only imagine how much time I would have spent instore looking at everything. I thought the store would have been huge. I have purchased dot cards for Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith and Schmincke. I find them helpful for colour selection only. I would love to see a video about how you like Jackson's brand of paper. I was curious about it and almost bought some during the sale.
I love my black wing pencils they are beautifully balanced drawing pencils made from high quality cedar and replaceable erasers I use the matte black and the natural.
Hi great haul! So i got 2 of the full set Daniel Smith Dot Cards(purchased a year apart), Schmincke Dot Card and the Winsor and Newton dot card all off Amazon and my Daniel Smith dot carda always has huge dots on them, I was able to swatch on the dot card itself and make large half page swatches with lots of tests for each dot- i only had one or 2 dots that were very little. My Schmincke and Winsor and Newton dot card were almost ridiculous-both had such little dot i barely had enought to swatch on the actual dot card. I think they are made by hand and i think it depends on the person making that depends on how big the dots are. All i know is my both my Daniel Smith dot cards has a really good sized amount of paint and Schmincke and Winsor and Newton had barely any(especially winsor and newtons dot card- it was like a dried dot swatch instead of actual reusable paint:( Schminckes was just a little better)...Maybe someone different from DS is making new dot cards and has a stingy hand...Im sorry that such tho:( Anyway great video tho, fun seeing inside of Jacksons, i also too imagined it to be a lot bigger..lol. much love
My Jackson's wishlist is as long as my arm! I've got alot of the Schminke supergranulating colours and pastels, which is a medium I want to get into this year. Loved your haul, can't wait for you to swatch the Schminke dotcard. I use Schminke watercolours and you can help me see what I want to get next! 😁
🧐Stingy dot cards grrrr. Yay Turner Acrylic gouache! Can’t wait to see what you create with them. 😎 Suggestion…sneak a tube or two interesting colors from their Japaneque line into your next cart. They have an interesting texture that is keen to receive pastels or colored pencils atop.
I think swatch color cards or pages feel expensive to me as you generally can’t use it more then the initial swatch. But I think that after the color swatches are done they might be a useful resource. I like seeing the inside of the store especially since I don’t go out much and have been shopping mostly online. I actually like the sample paper packs to try or explore more options.
Lol it is difficult to choose what is my favourite, all the brands you got are all amazing, looking forward to see what you’ll create with your Turner’s. Nice Jackson’s tour, it is my favourite art shop.
I gave up and ended up buying my holbein acrylic gouache from amazon japan. I think i waited for over a month for a restock on their website and when I finally made the purchase elsewhere jackson restocked them 😂💔 the paper block though looks nice I've been looking for a small watercolor block so I can't wait to hear your thoughts about it
The Canson Heritage Coldpressed is my favorite paper of all time and I am happy to see that your first impression of Turner Acryl Gouache is positive! Regarding the dot cards, I find they are particularly greedy with Daniel Smith samples and I don’t get why considering the DS dot card is pricier already. Anyway, thank you so so much for this Store Tour & Haul, I imagined I joined you and we were strolling together. I also thought Jackson’s physical store was a massive warehouse. Can’t wait to see what you create with Turner & excited for the dot swatching 😘
@@SketchesnScrubs They saying it’s normal is quite a bold statement, telling their customers it’s okay to pay for nothing basically, customer support these days lol 😂
I definitely recommend the schminke cobalt turquoise. I have that colour. It’s beautiful. I might have used it in one of my tutorials if you have a look at my RUclips channel. Also I have tried the Jackson’s watercolour paper and unfortunately I don’t like it at all . I tried a sketch book and a paper pack. The Jackson’s raven watercolour brushes are lovely though! And they’re really affordable.
Yay! I have become a big fan of Jackson’s I’m kind of surprised too with their size. Looks smaller than Dick Blick stores in the U.S., but that’s ok. Black Wing pencils? I finally purchased one about a year ago. There is a difference. The leads are very smooth (Black Wing says this allows you to write/draw faster bc of the smoothness,?) and you get a very consistent lay down of the graphite. Plus you can replace the erasers as you need. While I don’t use the one I purchased very much lately, I think almost every artist should have at least ONE Black Wing pencil (around $3 give or take) bc they’re just enjoyable to use.
I had never thought about the physical jackson's shop although I hear about the online one a lot, really nice to see! I've always been on the fence about dot cards because they are indeed not that inexpensive, so it's what I'm most interested in hearing your thoughts about. On the one hand maybe it's really a long term investment because it's something you'll always be able to reference and use to only buy the colours you really want. But on the other hand, if there's barely anything on it and you're unable to see how it really behaves beyond seeing the hue of the colour (like with wet on wet, mixes, etc) maybe there's no point... Coincidently, I recently treated myself to a beta and a delta sketchbook. I never had one and I had been waiting for a long time for them to come back in my online shop, they're too popular!
OMG the actual Jackson's shop!!!! One day I'll get there, lol! 😂 I have that Winsor and newton watercolour set, it's brilliant. Hope you had or have a great birthday 😊🤗 my favourite thing you got were the Turner acryl gouache, as for the Daniel Smith dot cards, that's a bummer, might be worth getting in touch with Daniel Smith customer service, you never know, they might send you replacements. I've seen other youtubers using dot cards and they looked like they had a decent size blob of paint. Xxx
Thank you so much for this! I'll be visiting London in May and am dying to get to Jackson's as I've not be able to order from them recently due to shipping.
@@SketchesnScrubs yes I've been to the cass art in Islington before but will definitely be heading there aswell as one in Covent Garden. Have you been to GreatArt they are in Shoreditch area wondering if they are worth going to aswell.
Oh wow that’s some really brilliant and vivid colors of the Turner’s Gouache set! I am still on the fence about what brand of Gouache I want to buy & I am still researching it. I’m surprised by the size of the Jackson’s Art Store in London. I too was thinking 🤔 it would be a warehouse size. It looks a bit bigger than the art store here in Oxford, Mississippi, USA. I love getting swatch cards but I have yet to do any swatching of mine. Thanks for sharing the tour of the store and your stash.
@@SketchesnScrubs Of course Winsor & Newton is on the list (I am loving all there products: colored pencils, watercolor pencils, Cotman student grade watercolors, and their basic sketching pencil set with sepia, white charcoal, charcoal, & black pencils), Holbein, M. Graham, & Daler-Rowney brands.
I love just soaking in art supplies stores. It’s so satisfying and juicy! And it’s fun to pick out 1 or 2 things to take home too! Sorry I missed the Premier. Work didn’t accommodate (the nerve!) I bought a few black wing because they were so promoted. I dunno. “Eh” it’s a pencil lol. (My opinion) Eeee Turners gouache. I use it in my prayer journal a lot! My next purchases will be white replacements-soft body acrylic, acrylic gouache and regular gouache.
small store but packed full of stuff!! i just bought a bunch of art supplies with some birthday money, but i wish i had of bought some dot cards to try. completely forgot about them
thank you 😀 i had a lazy birthday, so was good lol I bought some Clairefontaine paper since i've never tried it, a few markers sets to try, a coloured pencil set to give a try (not that i need any more pencils) and a small Zig Kuretake Gansai Tambi to try out. mostly wanted to really try the paper since i've heard so many good things about it
There should be pigment info on the back of each Turner's Acryla Gouache tube...mine have it on the back of the tube. And yes, i thought Jackson's would be WAY bigger!!
I hear what you're saying about the DS spot cards, but in the couple of smaller ones I've got I find a little goes a long way and it has certainly influenced my buying choices ( as they're so pricey). I'm interested in seeing how you get on with the Schminke dot card though.
My favourite sketchbook is W&N a5 300 gsm cold press. It is the only one I know with cp paper. They are really good quality. I don’t muck around in it and I don’t take it out . Only down side is it is quite expensive so I wait till my local art shot has a sale. Don’t know why no one on RUclips ever talks about them. I am interested in trying some oil pastels and did a bit of a study on all the different brands. I ended up buying a set of 48 Mungyo gallery brand which I think is their artists set. They were less than A$50. Craypas impressionist seem to get good reviews as well and are affordable. Maybe have a play around with something like that before splashing out on Sennellier. From what I can see most oil pastels artists use a mixture of brands because they offer different properties.
Aaah I jut love art stores and this one looked great and totally like I imagined it :D I fav supply u got has got to be the acryl gouache, I 've been seeing so much about that and it looks amazing :D
Happy upcoming birthday! My favorite thing from your haul is the Liquitex Acrylic Gouache, it’s such a staple for me, I love the consistency of it compared to Holbein Acryla Gouache. I’ve never tried Turner probably because it’s not in stores here in the US 😅 Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it once you give it a proper go!
How exciting!!!! My fav is the Turner. When I went to get a good gouache set I couldn't decide between Holbein or Turner, and went with Holbein. Been super curious about Turner since. I can't wait to see what you make with them! And I'm eager to know if they really do dry slower, because mine dry so fast, I feel like i waste more paint than I use.
@@SketchesnScrubs I'm loving them. The coverage, the vibrancy and especially the color selection cuz I'm a lazy butt when it comes to mixing, lol! But they dry out way too fast. I'm in Texas, where there's more humidity than most places, but even that doesn't help. I picked up a staywet pallet, but especially during the winter months, that even dries out! It won't stop me tho, gouache-obsessed for life!!!
I love watching you go art shopping in London! It’s like my dream haha. So I heard somewhere that the the Blackwing pencil is such a big deal because it was a big favorite among historic Disney animators. Supposedly, Shamus Culhane asked to be buried with his Blackwing pencil. Lol The love was real I guess.
Blackwing: They are old penciles which were once famous because some writers and some artists used them. Blackwing once claimed that you can write twice as fast with them compared to other penciles (What a rediculous claim). They did not sell well so they were no longer produced. A few years ago another company bought the name, and now they are producing pencils with the name Blackwing, but not with the original graphite once used... And some people, idk, just have to much money or want to feel really extra using so expensive penciles. The only difference to other penciles is the name, the marketing and the price tag. I really enjoyed this video, your smiling was audible in your voice for most of the time :D
It's smaller but packed full of good things by the looks of it. Thanks for going in and buying stuff on my behalf. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe one day I'll go down for a look , but I will only have cash and leave credit cards at home. The only problem I cN see is a accessibility ♿️. I have mobility problems and it looks a bit tricksy. Nevertheless wonderful to get a really good look at it. It'sike visiting Narnia. Great video
I used the Daniel Smith dot cards to choose which colours I wanted. That’s a little expensive for them though. I’m thinking what I should do for the first prompt. I’ll share it with you later. Stay safe and keep creating 💙💛💜
I want more info on the agrila wash I have always used watercolor and I loved what I saw. Also I want to start collecting papper. As far as the dots. i wouldnt waste my money, I have never seen them, but it doesnt look like you are getting enough for your money. I am sorry it is just my opinion I would just buy the tubes. I am new but I sm a fan, But I want the quotes lol. Have fun with your haul!
So glad to find your channel. Brand new subscriber, The product that intrigues me most is the Schminke dot cards. Getting Schminke in Canada is tough so trying before buying is the best idea for me. Been drooling over some of the super granulating and it would be great to know they live up to the hype.
HOORAYY I finally found a channel with a black lady in Europe... SO hard to find😉 What a great channel you have , and excellent presenting. You are so knowledgeable about it all. As a non-native speaker what is a : OTT...?? I cant find it on google and I can not find that particular paint...? 🤔 Love and Light from Holland 🌷
@@SketchesnScrubs Thank you so much for your kind reply , glad I found out that 'OTT" is not a sort paint 😂! will check the others out too. Manny thanks . Do visit Amsterdam. Great place to paint/sketch🙌🏽
I bought the Blackwing matte and, frankly, I'm not impressed at all. Then I bought the Faber-Castell matt set and was so much more impressed. They are actually matt!
Here you go: subscribed. Blackwing? Meh! Many people rave about the original iteration but the current ones are also adored. I think Steven Zapata Art uses the Blackwing exclusively and his art is astounding. They are aesthetically pleasing but the eraser on mine fell out so I wasn't impressed. They're expensive and there are other very nice pencils out there although none as pleasing to the eye. Jacksons do a fantastic job of appearing to be much larger than they are : ) . There must be a factory behind that store full of elves. Please visit Choosing Keeping next time.
@@SketchesnScrubs You need deeeeeep pockets for Choosing Keeping. I have a couple of their curated Japanese watercolour sets which are nice. I bought the Gansai Kuretake hoping to get something more affordable but they're quite different. Yes I'm based in London but not quite ready to call myself an artist. I picked up art in 2020 and still falling down the rabbit hole lol.

I recently heard Jackson’s branded watercolor is made by Schminke. I am not sure but that would be fantastic!
I'm so jealous. I wish we had a real art store! What a beautiful array of goodies. Love your haul!
Xxx
Watercolours and acrylic, watercolours being my favourite. I'm playing with inks and gouache lately too. 😊🤗❤
Thank you so much for this! I'll be visiting London in May and am dying to get to Jackson's as I've not be able to order from them recently due to shipping.
@@SketchesnScrubs yes I've been to the cass art in Islington before but will definitely be heading there aswell as one in Covent Garden. Have you been to GreatArt they are in Shoreditch area wondering if they are worth going to aswell.
very nice haul ❤️
My next purchases will be white replacements-soft body acrylic, acrylic gouache and regular gouache.
small store but packed full of stuff!!
i just bought a bunch of art supplies with some birthday money, but i wish i had of bought some dot cards to try. completely forgot about them
thank you 😀 i had a lazy birthday, so was good lol
I bought some Clairefontaine paper since i've never tried it, a few markers sets to try, a coloured pencil set to give a try (not that i need any more pencils) and a small Zig Kuretake Gansai Tambi to try out. mostly wanted to really try the paper since i've heard so many good things about it
There should be pigment info on the back of each Turner's Acryla Gouache tube...mine have it on the back of the tube.
@@SketchesnScrubs Wow thanks for replying! :) I’m in the US, and I like all media but veer towards watercolor and oils.
Great video
@@SketchesnScrubs thank you for your thoughtfulness. I've just found your videos and am enjoying them very much
New subscriber here! I love Jackson’s
I used the Daniel Smith dot cards to choose which colours I wanted. That’s a little expensive for them though. I’m thinking what I should do for the first prompt. I’ll share it with you later. Stay safe and keep creating 💙💛💜
i'm a paper enthusiast too and i buy more than i actually use 😂 and i would love to see you swatch both brands' dot cards!!
Here is Jess Karp’s video about her art supplies where she talks about her Blackwing pencil. ruclips.net/video/0evJ82qDWNA/видео.html
Here it is🎵🎵🎵🎶🎶🎼🎼🎼🎶😂😂😂
I love your videos and didn't realize I wasn't subscribed. 😨
@@SketchesnScrubs It's merely that you don't get the shine that you do with other pencils when you build up layers. I always hated that shine, lol.
