    I worked at Lucas Plume street as a lad and I often made looms by hand. I knew the Lucas wiring colour code off by heart. A Yorkshireman called Ernie Shufflebottom (really) was the plume street garage reception guy a great character, happy days

    Really good informative video: I love the tongue in cheek bit at the end about keeping originality when I can spot at least 4 un-original items under the bonnet.

      Just 4? A bit more than that. But seriously, she’s resto-mod. Modernized, but maintaining original appearance where possible.

    Just discovered your channel and very much enjoy your videos, very clear and informative. Despite your intro, I very much feel that you do know what you are doing but are too modest to say so. I have a '64 Traveller (change over modrl) in almond green which I hope to return to the road and ultimately achieve a similar standard to yours. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Just wanted to say thank you,I dont have a Morris Minor but I am recommissioning a 1965 Ford Cortina and want to rebuild the wiring loom and then include a fusebox,believe it or not the Cortina only had one inline fuse for the indicator circuit!
    My car was originally Positive Earth it has been converted to Negative Earth before I bought it.
    Its funny you saying that about the wiring looms colours as mine are the same colours. My main power feeds are brown id of thought they would be Red but it appears the were Brown back then.
    My indicators are Green wires but no Red trace.
    The Problem I have is i dont know what gauge wire I need to buy I guess having another loom would make it easier but these days everybody wants a fortune for even a scrap loom.
    I just want to protect my circuits with a fusebox add an alternator (its still on a dynamo) and add relays for the lights etc so i can relieve the strain on the switches and fit halogen lights and possibly a radio?
    How did you draw your own diagram is that a special program?
    Thanks
    Jo (actually Jodie same as your car :) )

      Hi Jo.
      Great to hear from you.
      Here’s a link to a page that can advise on wire sizes.
      www.12voltplanet.co.uk/cable-sizing-selection.html
      Generally I tend to use 16.5 A for most things except headlights.
      I used Gimp to draw the wiring harness. It’s a very general graphics editor. Not as powerful as Photoshop, but easier to learn and it’s free.
      Good luck with the Cortina. You can buy complete harnesses for the Cortina, but they aren’t cheap.

      Thanks for the info its ironic you used gimp as I use linux so cant use photoshop but have heard of gimp as I am sure its a linux program but not used it myself will have to download it and have a play with it :)
      Yes Autosparks do Cortina looms priced at How ****** much! what do you used for headlights 27amp?
      Thanks again for your help :)

      Downloaded and installed gimp as ive used photoshop in the past as a photo editer Gimp seems somewhat familiar but have to admit im totally clueless as to how you draw a wiring diagram with it? Ive searched online but cannot find anything to help. So if you can give me any pointers on the basics id be ever so grateful as i just dont know where to start how to draw the wires,colour them or how to add symbols or lettering? Im afraid my photoshop/gimp skills are limited to editing photos :(

    The BS AU7 colour code standard for car wiring can be found in the Haynes Automotive Electrical Manual Handbook. Find a method of preventing water entry to those bullet connectors, hence the Prince of Darkness tag. The connectors seem to be in the most inappropriate positions like under the wings etc.

    • @jodiethemorrisminortraveller
      @jodiethemorrisminortraveller  2 года назад

      Agreed. It’s always a trade off between authenticity and modern standards. For instance the original layout has unfused circuits. Maybe a squirt of WD40 on the bullets?

    • @robertneill3057
      @robertneill3057 2 года назад

      @@jodiethemorrisminortraveller Would extend the lamp unit tail wires until they reached the inner wing/engine compartment/luggage compartment then put the connectors there. Does make any replacement more of a hassle though with routing of the wires/loom cable.

    • @jodiethemorrisminortraveller
      @jodiethemorrisminortraveller  2 года назад

      That’s what I did in the LED 2 video. There are no connectors under the wing. All are sealed inside the headlamp bucket or in the engine compartment

    Very good video. I am ashamed to say that even after 34 years of Morris Minor ownership, I never realised that it used a standard colour code for the wiring! It is so important to follow the correct colour coding when making changes. These are historic vehicles and the next owner will have no idea what has been done if random coloured wires are used. I get my wire from AES Ltd who will sell wire by the metre as your other suppliers do.

    jodie you have done an amazing job i have no words to commemorate your work & details you have given in this video- i had a quarry is there any documents to find the thickness of wires that car harness need - for example a battery to starter would be a heavy gauge & teh dasboard bulb might need a thinner guage is there any calculations for these gauges given - that will set me through

    • @jodiethemorrisminortraveller
      @jodiethemorrisminortraveller  2 года назад

      I use 25A for headlights and 16A for most other things. Starter cable is specialist and sold as such. 35mm square should be ok.

    • @jodiethemorrisminortraveller
      @jodiethemorrisminortraveller  2 года назад +1

      Most of the cable is 14 strand. (8 amp) =18 gauge US or 28 strand (17.5 amp) = 14 gauge US, although there are exceptions. The lighter cable is mostly side and tail lights and general wiring. The heavier is mostly general distribution (solid colour) , headlights, horn and heavy accessories.
