The bi-metal spring in a directional signal flasher unit heats up when current flows through it causing it to bend (click) and break the electrical connection. Once the current stops, it then cools down and bends back into it's original shape (clack) allowing current to flow, repeating the cycle. Most newer vehicles these days (the past few decades) have solid-state signal flasher units, or the directionals are computer controlled so the click-clack sound that you hear in most modern vehicles, is made artificially.

4:50. They should have also mentioned that you should not be closer than 12 inches to the steering wheel when you drive because you will be hit by the air bag as it deploys at 200MPH and that causes a lot of neck and head trauma. The idea is that the forward momentum will make you hit the airbag after is has deployed. If the airbag hits you as it deploys it is going to hurt you. And you should never drive with your hand(s) at 12 O'clock because your wrist is in the inflation zone and your wrist will get hit by the airbag moving at 200MPH and it will break. Very Interesting! However, you got the turn signal principle exactly backwards - the spring is a straight leaf, normally making contact - when you turn on the signal, current flows, heating the spring and it bends over, braking the contact. Then it cools off, it straightens, and makes contact, starting over.

A turn signal flasher is a special kind of relay that does utilize heat generated by electrical flow, but the heat is caused by the flow of electricity through the contacts causing a piece of spring steel to disconnect the circuit. The metal quickly cools and snaps back into place completing the circuit once again. There is no heat generated when the circuit is incomplete.
