The story is that Shunsui, who is the most laid-back and chilled out captain of the Gotei 13, is actually a very depressed man with a drinking problem. He may smile and shrug everything off as if there is no problem but if you look in his eyes, You can tell that he feels dead inside.

Shunsui is one of my favorite characters from the series for this reason. I'm still young (young adult) but I've seen some shit growing up and kind of understand now. Life is very difficult is all I can say but all you can really do is live life to the fullest. Shunsui has some dark secrets that he holds and regrets that some of us don't even know about.

And in the end, when the guilt and condemnation from his deceased wife literally squeezed his throat, he "cuts" these "threads" (killed himself) (The last attack is aimed at the throat, and the last act is called "Images of Bloody Thread Scissors"). All "translations" is made through Google so can be badly wrong, but it's just my overthinking could let me be at peace, lol
if we look at the bankai it looks very desperate because the visuals are very good with the use of colors that seem grungy. Damn, his bankai felt so powerful after I heard it, it felt very oppressive and lonely, just like his Reiatsu, it gave everyone the creeps. I think Shunsui is the best artist than Rojuro
