Nah. Czechs did park the bus, giving Portugal 73% possession, and Vitinha was the best player for Portugal. Bruno had a pretty bad game relatively speaking. I can't believe anyone would think he was the best for Portugal in this game.
Bruno was totally absent at least during the first half. On 2 occasions he did not react at all to a short distance pass. He should have been substituted for Joao Neves as of the beginning of the 2e half.
@@louiscaeiroramos8051Bruno created our 2 biggest chances of the 1st half with 2 amazing passes. On any other day we score both and with a 2-0 lead, chezh republic start chasing the game and therefore become much easier to attack, meaning we dominate the game with no issue.
This was my first thought as well, Bruno was too far back to do anything in attack, I think it didnt workout for him and he made a subpar game, attacking at least, I did a good game defending. Also Czechs DID park the bus, this analysis is biased af.
Perhaps an unpopular take here, but I found Ronaldo, even at 39 yrs old quite effective in this game. He set up Vitinha beautifully with that back pass. If Leao's cross was a bit better, Ronaldo could've scored with that header early on in the game, and in my opinion, the Jota goal was not offside for Ronaldo. In any case, he played well for his age. Coach made a huge mistake putting Cancelo as a midfielder. Dalot needs to come off and Cancelo needs to play on the right side, he's much more direct with his approach and Bernardo Silva will hopefully feed that since he loves slowing the game down and making it possible for the opposing team to get back into formation. Leao needs to be benched - this guy was ineffective most of the game - although, credit where credit is due, he did almost score due to a Bruno Fernandes through pass. In the end, we need to be more direct and faster instead of this disgusting passive possession driven play.
I agree but I woulnd't bench Leão, he needs space and he is useful against a certain type of teams, like this one, he just should have been subbed during the HT imo.
Watching this game I kept thinking about your England analysis. Portugal didn't have players running in behind enough either, Bernardo Silva kept dropping to six to receive the ball to feet. Ronaldo being alone in the box vs. 5 tall Czechs.
Just to clarify... Portugal's team have different options for the wings, especially on the right. The coach Martinez decided to wait until the last minutes to make the substitutions and it almost backfired. Other thing to take in consideration this was the plan B strategy. It's not the best formation to begin with as they just started to make a few games with it.
Great video but I’ve watched the game twice now… at parts of the game, the Czechs had a back line of 7. They absolutely did park the bus, we weren’t even creative with our possession, they just parked the bus and didn’t want the ball.
portugal were disappointing tbh they should have a direct rw like neto and give the overlap to leao and neto to get some decent crosses on not some dead crosses
Bruno Fernandes was the best player on the pitch? Aren't you confusing him with Vitinha? I'm portuguese and i watched this whole match and, Bruno Fernandes was asleep all the time, failing passes and even lost the ball twice because he wasn't paying attention to it (team mate passed him the ball and he didn't even receive the ball, just let it pass through him because he was looking at the crowd). Vitinha did a wonderful game though, that is why he was named man of the match...
One thing I've noticed, it's not usual having 3 players with the same way of thinking the game. Vitinha, Bruno and Bernardo Silva like to play slow tempo, Ball into feet, It doesn't make sense against these kind of teams. We needed explosive players, doing runs from behind the defence, Ronaldo was too lonely as always... Pedro neto came in, and the dribble he did was the dribble we needed the whole game long. Any other player would pass the ball and playing safe, we need more players willing to risk passes and crosses.
Fuck Martinez, he was lucky, very lucky, leaving Palhina and Joao Neves in the bench, waiting till the 90 minute to bring Pedro Neto. The guy almost cost us the game, plus our football was very boring and not menacing at all. We need to do a lot better, Martinez needs to do a lot better.
I thought the way the team passed the ball around was really high quality but there was no penetration whatsoever. Portugal played like the goal of the game is to get more passes than the opposition. If that was the case, this euro would be in the bag 🤣 707 passes, 70% possession. Insane numbers. Portugal has too many top quality playmakers and martinez seems to want to play them all at the same time, not gonna work against big teams. I was screaming at the tv begging this guy to send in conceiçao, neto or jota. Bruno should also not have to defend as much as he did, no cdm is a big mistake. But who is martinez gonna sacrifice? Can’t be vitinha, he’s far too good at this point and IMO he’s actually overshadowing bernardo. It pains me to say but bernardo doesn’t have a place in this team unless he’s playing central and leao desperately needs a fullback to overlap him and create some space. It had to be mendes, cancelo wants to play like a 20 and we don’t need another hyper mobile player running around in the midfield. Portugal suffers from excess quality 🤣
Inacio and Palinha needs to be in the team instead of Pepe and Nuno Mendes...Inacio can also cover for the lb and is better defender and passer than Mendes...and Palhinha can easily play Pepe's position...Also will ad a lot of versatility and pace in the defence... I fear Pepe will be caught out on the counter attack which Czech didn't utilise...Bruno or Vitinha will also won't have to track back so much.

As a portuguese i agree with every thing you said. Our right side was not dangerous because bernardo and dalot play safe. The player that everyone talks about here in portugal is Francisco Conceição. Good analysis as always. Bruno was good but I feel Vitinha was the best player on the pitch, kept the ball moving down the middle(tho he took too many touches at time). Martinez got it wrong trying to fit in all the full backs he had, he should have kept Nuno mendes as a LB/LWB and shift cancelo to the right or drop him for dalot. Old man pepe is forcing them to play a 3 CBs lineup to protect his lack of pace and that is costing them a midfield for more control. Portugal need a first phase passer like Neves/palhinha, I feel Vitinha and Bruno are better as 8/10s. Ronaldo upfront is a huge problem as he tends to vacate the box a lot and there is no one to occupy that space for a team that cross a lot(Atleast till Jota came on)
was dissapointed with the approach. V.direct towards CR7, lack of movement and runners in behind. Would of liked to see silva come off, neves come on, neves sit and bruno play second striker and then look to get more runners/direct players on like Neto. the 3-2-2-3 initial shape with rotation is fine, but profile wise was poor. Would probably switch to a 4 back and play 2 true wingers, allow dalot to invert rather then hold the width. gives more options in posession.
Well Portugal didn't have the halfspace players either that were willing to play on the last line. They kept being outnumbered by the defense. A back 4 would have been better
Porugal, as we watched in qualification and friendlies, are very strong in runs behind the defense and they couldn´t implement this way of play against a Czechia that played a very low block, bascially just sitting back, and waited to counter and play long balls everytime they took the ball. Portugal played really well, very aggressive to get the ball back and quickly trying to infiltrate the little spaces that Czechia was barelly giving, Portugal still could find ways to get dangerous balls in the area but they weren´t as effective as in other games or it would be at least 2-0 at half time. The second half was a bit more open, Portugal with the time passing got more desperate and comitted some mistakes which eventually led to the Czechia goal but they did almost nothing to get it. Portugal eventually and with some luck, which is helpful too, scored 3 goals, one of them offside, but 2 of them were enough to beat a very disappoint Czechia side, I was expecting more from them and they were lucky to only lose by this numbers, Portugal is a big threat for this tournement and they have a game plan that will be hard to beat, very excited for the Portugal vs Turkey game, that will be a tough test for any team at the Euros.
Martinez was lucky. Portugal and Portuguese players never, ever feel comfortable in 3-5-2. You can see it in the early minutes, when they had 2 or 3 breakthroughs and crosses into empty boxes. Portugal is already one of the more mobile teams in the world in 4-3-3. Diogo Jota needs to play because he knows how to get into the box and Cancelo needs to be on the right because Bernardo Silva drifts too much into the middle.
They played all time with 11 behind the ball and that's not parking the bus? LOL. Parking the bus and counter attack was all they did! And out of NOTHING they scored! LOL
Ronaldo's positioning was awfull this game.. If u see the replay on the second goal he his no where near the penalty area he started all his runs on offside he feel to the wing a lot of times "demanding" that Bernardo would play striker for some moments or he would come to the left and creat a surplus of portuguese players with Leão and Cancelo... Ronaldo still doesn't believe in his Portuguese teammates to get him da ball and its frustrating because why are telling Bernardo to switch place with you when you are clearly a better finisher and clearly a worst playmaker than bernardo
