I think the only positive to take from that match is the 3 points

It wasn't a good set up though. Foden was inverting to Bellinghams space, Kane was dropping back to Bellinghams space too. They all want the ball to feet and won't run in behind

do you think selecting a profile like Sterling would have helped?

    • @AntoJones
      @AntoJones 3 месяца назад

@ffphala897 he picked players instead of a system and players to fit. He had Gordon on the bench who would have kept with and allowed Trip to invert which Foden doesn't allow.

@@ffphala897 Only if you use him correctly, I always thought that Sterling should have been used as a sub, bring him on when teams are tiring when his pace would hurt the opposition.

Yes. Or just play Gordon who has similar game to Sterling but is in form and in squad

I think the main reason England dominated the first half hour was the Serbia showed them too much respect and sat off in a low block. Once they realised there was no threat in behind, they started to press England more and without a ball-progresser in midfield, England had to go long. I also don't think Serbia are that good against the press. England might not be that big, but Rice and the 2 centre-halfs should be able to handle long-ball threats, particularly if you let Bellingham press aggressively, which is yet another thing he's world-class at.

Was not surprised with the midfield performance (poor player profiling from England again). You can't have Bellingham, Trent, and Rice all in the central area they aren't technical enough to break down teams and keep the ball, zero one touch play.
If you watch Madrid, they don't use Bellingham in the build-up, and he doesn't get that involved in play. Instead, he's allowed to roam and anticipate a box crashing opportunity

it's unbelievable how 90% of Liverpool fans (as a Liverpool fan) just want Trent to play as a midfielder when, 1 he's slow in there, 2 he usually played in the outside channel of the midfield with klopp while having 3 midfielders and firmino as false 9 making the things happen in the midfield... trent only task was to switch play towards mane and Robertson yet people even Southgate still think he can play there. His speed on the ball when having to take decisions and lack of aggressiveness on midfield is just telling of how it would go.

Spot on. As a Madrid fan, its obvious to me that England has the talent, but not the right coach for the job. They got the quality and the fixtures are favorable to them till semis so England has a legit chance to win the tournament unless they face France or even Italy.

definitely should have been better but at the end of the day we beat a good physical Serbia side and are sitting comfortably at the top of our group. Whilst again, the performance could/should have been better I don't think any other team would receive the same amount of criticism for that performance. England fans need to actually start supporting the team, do people think the players aren't reading any of the shit online?

That Serbian side just isn't good though, and if you play the same way vs Denmark or Slovenia, you will just concede for sure.
You are just lucky that we were shit. We had 0 pace and 0 creativity for 60 minutes. 2nd half, while we had possession, we never created anything, because for most of the game, we played with no creative players.
Any decent side, with a decent coach, will punish you if you play like that again.

Managers use subs now not just tactically but to get fresh legs on the pitch, Southgate doesn't seem to know this! and its not like we don't have good options to bring on.
Every other team in the tournament they have used all 5 and some 4 of their subs, the only team to use 3 was England.

I think people are being overly harsh on england in the end they got a result and it was just the first game - but also they seem to have a systematic issues with building up from the back whenever they are being slightly pressed. Agree that long balls are a somewhat valid approach but exceptional teams should also be able to find other solutions.

Slothgate is too slow at making decisions, if you change tactics you need to consider changing personnel. Bellingham was selfish in holding onto the ball for too long and taking hospital touches which allowed Serbia to make clattering tackles on him. Does he think getting injured for the knockout stages is good for the team ? Foden was awful, commentary said that Guardiola would be worried about the challenges he took plus the fact that Pep is going to have to train him from scratch to undo Southgates confusing instructions. We couldn't play our way out for most of the last hour and kept losing the ball playing it long. Other managers must be laughing their heads off.

England won, winning a not so good game is the most important thing in a tournament. That's why I think the England team will definitely be in the tournament for a long time. At the end of the day, the only thing that counts is winning.
