    Great vid! Find a longer bolt and cut the head off (or a thin piece of rod) and as you remove the bolts, replace them with the temporary bolt with no head. Holds everything in line.

      The real fix is to clean the carb properly. That screw it took out is where the problem is. It's for the idle and is most likely clogged a little. I just fixed the same mower

    Yeah that Honda "auto choke" is a wax something or other, and does wear out, but that needs a cleaning, I use to hate Honda carbs, but once I learned from Burce Pender how to reassemble one, I never have a problem now.

    • @mjg263
      @mjg263 3 года назад +2

      Actually that one is a “semi-auto” choke that preceded the full auto choke system. The semi-auto choke starts opening as soon as you squeeze the handle bale to start the engine, so you’ve got to squeeze the handle and pull the starter right away or the choke will be fully open before you even try. The full auto choke (ACS) is the one with a wax pellet motor that drives a piston and opens the choke as the engine warms up, no lever to set before you start it. Both systems have their problems, I liked the combination throttle and manual choke lever on the handle but they took it away!

    Another great video. I've have the same mower, self propelled with the identical problem. Done exactly what you've done, unfortunately this cure's the symptom and not the problem. As you mentioned, the engine is starving for fuel. To ultimately fix the problem I ended up drilling out the pilot jet. The mower now runs like new

      @@donvoll2580 Hello Don : Yes either dirt or gummed up ethonal blocking the pilot jet passage. This is common on Honda Small engine carbs. Here Is the link

  • @mjg263
    @mjg263 3 года назад +1

    Yeah, the Honda “sandwich” design is an over engineered PITA. I use long M6 studs to locate everything like everyone else is saying and it does make it easier but they’re still a PITA to work on. I know it’s already sold but pretty sure your bypass jet was still clogged. You’ve got to ram a teeny piece of wire through it first (no diaphragm in there to worry about) THEN blast it with carb cleaner and air. Also, the semi-auto choke starts opening as soon as you squeeze the handle bale so you’ve got to pull the starter rope immediately when it’s cold. These are not the ones with the wax pellet, those ones don’t have the lever on them. Love push mower videos, way better than riding mower stuff!

    20W50 is used in hydrostatic transmissions, mainly Hydro-Gear. As for Hondas only use 10W30 oil as they have tight tolerances and with more moving parts a thinner multi-weight oil lubricates better than a thicker oil, using any other oil in a Honda besides 10W30 will cause damage, as a Honda Engines dealer the way to clean the carb properly (as per their training course) is to remove the main nozzle/emulsion tube, take a flat head screwdriver from inside the carburetor and push down on the main nozzle, and it's important to remove the pilot jet and clean it as well. the surging indicates either a clogged pilot jet or a clogged main nozzle/emulsion tube.

    I picked up the same exact mower for free recently. I put a new plug in it, cleaned the deck, new blade, oil change, air filter, and fresh gas.... it still won't start. When I pulled the carb off the spacer gasket ripped so I'm waiting to get the new one. If it doesn't start I'll replace the fuel line but after that I'm lost.

    • @MowersNBlowers
      @MowersNBlowers  Год назад +2

      It’s almost never the spark plug, it’s 90% the carburetor. Clean the carb while you’re waiting for the gasket. Be sure to remove the main jet and clean that too!

    Henry, its always nice to get something Honda powered. I usually get Hondas on Chraftsman mowers. I still have never got a real Honda mower. I got tired of wrestling with the carbs, gaskets, heat shields, so i went to a hardware store and bought 2 bolts about 1/4 inch longer than the originals and cut the heads off and use them as studs. Slide everything together then take each stud out one at a time and replace with the bolt. Makes it alot easier. 👍😎Roger #StopAsianHate

    Honda makes very good engines, but the carbs are a pain in the butt taking on and off and trying to align all of the gaskets and components with those long bolts. We had an extra set of bolts that we cut the heads of until we got everything together, then put the correct bolts in one at a time. Kohler got smart and used 10 mm nuts.
