THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE GIFT OF THIS INTERVIEW!!! Paul McCartney is the greatest songwriter of all time and an amazing human being. He and the Beatles are eternal. Howard is a legend himself and has evolved into a great interviewer. What a magnificent interview!!! I could watch these two incredible men talk forever.

I think Paul has gotten really good at honoring John’s memory without deifying him or trashing him. To me, it sounds like he graciously discussed John as he knew him without spite. I’m growing to respect Sir Paul more and more these days.
ArtFlunky. I agree. He is very honest and humble to say John had created the very intro of the song in the first sit down after the other 3 were struggling to get it off the ground. That is how collaboration is done.
ArtFlunky I think Paul and John were as brothers. They first time they met they were The Quarrymen (1958) and they were friends until the sad death of John in 1980. Awesome interview and you are very right in what you posted here.
Paul never trashed anyone. John was the guy that said things like that. I don't think Paul cares about what people think. Not saying he does not have a bad heart. Having a big heart can make someone a target for nuts. George Harrison sure knew that. Beatles did all there was to do IMO. Also a Stones fan and after 1970 they never were what they were in 1965. Beatles took a bow and made many great solo records. Had that idiot not shot John in 1980 they would have made new music. Now that George has passed "The dream is over" . Long happy lives to Paul and Richard.
Avenged Sevenfold releases these “breakdown” episodes on RUclips where they go through each song and talk about how everything was written and they isolate the tracks Individually and discuss it. It’s brilliant, every band should do it
but John was funny , called most of the songs throw aways and i think he did that to keep his ego in check , i sure wish i was able to write such throw aways !!
You got that completely wrong. He looks and talks as if he's afraid of being senile. The conversation starts with him denying that John didn't like it, despite having said that multiple times in the past...
When you get to be Paul's age, there is more looking back than looking forward. In spite of the squabbles the Beatles had the last few years, I'm sure Paul looks back very fondly on those days and misses John and George very much. I wonder if he ever stops and thinks "Wow! Did we really do that"?
00:58 "You've just got some chords and you make a song up." He forgot to add "And then you record and release it and hundreds of millions of people buy it and play it every day for the next 50 years." :)
To be honest it is an easy song not complex at all, based on fashion of 12 bar, not minimising it .. but it's just a simple little ditty, paul was good at.
So John came up with the piano intro to Ob la di, and Paul did the piano intro to George's While My Guitar Gently Weeps. That's teamwork for a group of geniuses.
Paul’s expression at the very end when he says, “it really was a great memory”. You can tell he’s reliving that awesome moment just a little bit all these years later. The unfathomable vault of magic that his mind must be is beyond incredible. What a legend!
What a fucking amazing interview that was. Paul has been in the studio for Howard a few times but this was one of the best ones ever since Howard asked about the creation of so many songs. I also loved how Paul will dispel the many rumors that have gone around over the years. So great! Love him.
mokthemagicman right at the end of this clip, I could see Pauls eyes well up at the memory of John. His best friend, gone for decades but still so close. Hang in there Paul
After Paul said “what a great little memory”. I felt sad for him not being able to sit next to John and reminisce about songs like this one during an interview.
This is so true. Decades of other interviewers asking Paul the same questions and Paul rehashing the same guarded scripted lines, but Howard gets most of the hidden treasures from him. Such as asking him about John and rumors of homosexuality. Truly fantastic interviewer
Ferdinand Cesarano People can say what they want about howard but we can't deny his canny ability to bring out the best stories out of people. He's a great interviewer
Absolutely. Many many years ago when Howard was still on TV and radio both, I started basing my opinion of a celebrity on how they were in his interview. Two examples: Chevy Chase turned out to be a total dick and Heather Locklear (please keep her in your prayers and good thoughts) was totally charming and funny on top of being a babe.
And his interruptions are shitting on a lot of those great stories. Howard is so afraid of forgetting to ask the question, that he can't spite it out quick enough. Give us a break Howard.
John, and the rest of the Beatles for that matter, hated the fact that they were spending so much time and energy doing take after take after take of the song. They didn't dislike the song itself...
They ALL saved each other's days. Just to name a few. Paul saved John by creating the bass line for "Come Together" John said it completely changed the song for the better. George saved Paul with the acoustic guitar intro and solo in "And I Love Her" Paul said it changed the song for the better. Ringo creates classic drum lines for songs like "Come Together" "Ticket to Ride" immediately marks those songs distinct from any before or since. They were a complete band, complimenting each other. No single person had it all or did it all.
It drives me crazy when people trash “Ob la di...”. They don’t understand that the song was absolutely perfect for the white album, and that it made the darker songs on the album, even darker. Having a song as upbeat as Ob la di, and then having songs like Dear Prudence and Cry Baby Cry and Helter Skelter is what makes the album so great. It makes the album so strange and enigmatic. And even discounting all that, Ob la di is a fuckin brilliant pop song. That’s one of the most infectious melodies ever.
In recent years it's often been McCartney telling us what be added to Lennon songs, so it's very refreshing to hear what John contributed to O Bla Di !
I read that the three of them Paul, George, and Ringo had been working on the song for hours playing it at a slow tempo, then Lennon came in and sat down at the piano and played it fast. And of course, that is how they did it.
Paul told the cleaned up story. The more honest one was that John stormed out of the studio in a huff sick of playing the song and then returned stoned out of his mind yelling "...AND THIS IS HOW THE FUCKING SONG SHOULD GO!!!" banging the intro on the piano while Paul (according to Geoff) looked like he was about to take a swing at him
I love Paul. Alway so giving of his stories into the Beatles and his relationships with the members. He is always so upbeat, even after devastating losses of his mother, John, Linda, and George. Others as well.
Howard Stern has a chemistry interviewing Paul. He's gotten away from the tawdry stuff, and does some good things. Spontaneity was an integral element of McCartney's work with the Beatles. Most of the time, it worked out brilliant.
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da has always been one of my favorite Beatles songs. During the recording of The White Album, things were tense and they weren't always getting along, but at least on this song, The Beatles seemed to be having a good time. Is just an uplifting positive song!👍
One of my favorite songs on my favorite albums❤ Paul is still amazing! He always tells a great story and is super energetic every video I watch about Paul I like him more and more
I always used to think Howard was just a crazy shock jock that only did things for the weird factor of them, but I've recently watched a bunch of interview snippets here on RUclips and he's a damn good interviewer. His demeanor. His questions. His overall attitude. Great stuff. I've always loved Paul, too, so this was especially good.
What I love most is all these years later we still have living legend Paul around to share these stories of historic Beatle moments. In my mid-50s it seems as though the Beatles were another lifetime ago. Yet Paul's still here (and aging incredibly gracefully) to give us his views on such an amazing era.
This clip is the key to life if you ask me. If you don't get it. Get some new eyes on it. Or just walk way and come back with some fresh ones of your own. RIP John & George !
This is how they worked. They may have been more individual when it came to song writing but they all contributed to make each of the songs better. The songs success was the band’s success and was a representation of The Beatles.
GREAT great interview..all those untrue stories that Lennon HATED this song are completely unfounded!! Thank you Sir Paul for setting the record straight because I have absolutely and unequivocally LOVED this song for many years!! Love you Macca!! Yeeess! 💕💜🎼🎶
Aww. And now, we can see that process so clearly on the “Get Back” project. I saw exactly what Paul means about evolving the words and music at the same time. What a treasure that footage is.
I love Paul McCartney this is the fifth time I’m watching this video I just love the story of how they made there music and where they went to write their music and it’s fascinating how passionate he loves telling theses stories
Paul is a real perfectionist. I think the first completed version of the song and its earliest takes were great! Not sure why he thought it wasn’t working.
Poul McCartney keeps knocking down all those wird rumors every time he gets confronted with them and I think that is good. Because it shows that people don't know half the truth.
@but ton If dub step had been invented back then, they would have thrown it in, same with rap and hip-hop. Metal? Helter Skelter. Punk? Live Hamburg version of My Baby's Red Hot. Techno? New wave and no wave - can't think off hand. Surf rock? Back In The USSR. Hardcore? - not invented yet. Rockabilly - played tons of it in the early days, including That's All Right Mama on the BBC Sessions. Whatever existed musically by the end of the 1960s, they took a shot at.
You can tell Howard idolizes Paul the way he talks to him. This leads to him asking great questions and getting better insight into Paul’s prime with the Beatles and stories we wouldn’t otherwise know about. Just great chemistry between these two. Love it!
They ALL saved each other's days. Just to name a few. Paul saved John by creating the bass line for "Come Together" John said it completely changed the song for the better. Great video, nice job, Howard. This is the kind of stuff I love to hear about, song construction..we really can't take these kinds of insights for granted because one day we won't have the pleasure anymore.
@@tlatosmd Oh, yeah, that was wild! But it's true, there's surely a lot of momentos either hilarious or emotional that they will keep inside to the grave... They were normal friends living their youth, after all.
Wow... Sir Paul is in a very good shape And from what i've heard, he's just finished his tour to japan Can you believe this guy is already 76 years old? I'm hoping that Sir Paul is live long enough to do one last Beatle reunion with Ringo Ps : Paul is alive
1:31 so John comes in to the studio and makes up a rhythym for that amazing song just like that, VERY FAST, without thinking... WOW!!! 😲😍❤ He's pure brillant and special! Never have i ever heard something like this😲
John wouldn't like a song on Monday, love it by Wednesday. That's just how he was. Maybe it was a put-on, but the quotes show it. Love that, even if it didn't leave it clear exactly what he liked and what he didn't.
^cause that's what he felt like during that time, opinions change man, and so does John, he even had an interview w/ George that proved this, where he said he was qouted on saying something years ago but he doesn't feel that way anymore when it was published, very opinionated and complex person, no wonder he likes to hang out people who have a strong personality.
I should listen to the whole interview, but an interesting little tidbit. The “Desmond” mentioned in the song is none other than the great ska singer Desmond Dekker.

Paul....is the best....howard your a lucky man...to interview one of the fab five........ever interview George?
I think Paul has gotten really good at honoring John’s memory without deifying him or trashing him. To me, it sounds like he graciously discussed John as he knew him without spite. I’m growing to respect Sir Paul more and more these days.

ArtFlunky I think Paul and John were as brothers. They first time they met they were The Quarrymen (1958) and they were friends until the sad death of John in 1980. Awesome interview and you are very right in what you posted here.
No matter what happened, they are friends, best friends.
Paul never trashed anyone. John was the guy that said things like that. I don't think Paul cares about what people think.
Not saying he does not have a bad heart. Having a big heart can make someone a target for nuts. George Harrison sure knew that.

Long happy lives to Paul and Richard.
Paul is the forever consummate gentleman, a true Sir.
Howard: So, John Didn't like this song, am I correct?
Paul: *WHO SAYS?*
Link 101 somebody said John hated the “f.....n” song because it was music for his grandma or granny’s music something like that
I mean John did actually he called it “Paul’s granny shit.” So yeah there’s that 😂😂
Yea I liked that answer, very sassy
So damn cute!
Geoff Emerick said that John "openly and vocally detested" it.
This is actually what I want to hear from bands, how they came up with the songs and who did this and that.
Problem is....most bands don't even write their own songs these days
You Too I love these discussions.
totally
I wish my songs were as good
Avenged Sevenfold releases these “breakdown” episodes on RUclips where they go through each song and talk about how everything was written and they isolate the tracks Individually and discuss it. It’s brilliant, every band should do it
From what I’ve read, John didn’t HATE the song. Macca was just spending so much time on it that John got tired of working on it.
Exactly.
Well you can't always believe what you read.
Barney Os. In Johns interview with Playboy I seem to recall him saying that song and Honey Pie were “rubbish”
I think the biggest issue was whether release it as a single or not, John had "greater/deeper" songs in mind…
but John was funny , called most of the songs throw aways and i think he did that to keep his ego in check , i sure wish i was able to write such throw aways !!
You just play some chords and write a song. Yeah, Paul, sure, it’s just that easy for all of us.
geetarbube For people who are able to songwrite well it is
I mean, that's how you make a song, but a Beatles song isn't just a song now innit?
Just go to show how different John and Paul were lol
geetarbube
It’s like Michael Jackson saying “You just move your feet and body and that’s how you dance, you know?”
geetarbube lol 😂
Paul saying, "It's a great little memory" Kills me from the inside out.
the look in his eyes in that last second. we can just imagine
Necrotic why?
Ikr? He Really Loved His Good Mate John. God Bless. ☮
U ok bro
You can see it in his eyes too. He's looking inward and seeing that memory play in his mind.
1:58 Paul looks like he's missing John deeply here. Poor Paul. They were like brothers.
itaintmebabe714 I noticed that too 😢
You got that completely wrong. He looks and talks as if he's afraid of being senile. The conversation starts with him denying that John didn't like it, despite having said that multiple times in the past...
No, James Paul McCartney and Lennon were like brothers. However William and Lennon did not have the same connection.
Yet when he was told of John's death, he coldly said, "It's a DRAG, innit?"
no they weren't.
1:58
You can see by his expression that Paul McCartney is truly looking back on old times. "What a great little memory".
When you get to be Paul's age, there is more looking back than looking forward. In spite of the squabbles the Beatles had the last few years, I'm sure Paul looks back very fondly on those days and misses John and George very much.

00:58 "You've just got some chords and you make a song up." He forgot to add "And then you record and release it and hundreds of millions of people buy it and play it every day for the next 50 years." :)
Well said. The White Album was released 50 years ago. Wow!
or 100 years!
To be honest it is an easy song not complex at all, based on fashion of 12 bar, not minimising it .. but it's just a simple little ditty, paul was good at.
I'm sure we care about how the dam thing came together, not what came later.
Paul McCartney: Easy, guys.. I put my pants on just like the rest of you -- one leg at a time. Except, once my pants are on, I make gold records.
So John came up with the piano intro to Ob la di, and Paul did the piano intro to George's While My Guitar Gently Weeps. That's teamwork for a group of geniuses.
Paul also did the intro on Lucy in the sky and Strawberry fields.
Who came up with the Strawberry Fields intro? I know Paul played it in Anthology

He was out there looking 'round for it.
All this time, we have been hearing a song that says "BRUH"

Brah not bruh
Bra's all over the song.
Paul’s expression at the very end when he says, “it really was a great memory”. You can tell he’s reliving that awesome moment just a little bit all these years later. The unfathomable vault of magic that his mind must be is beyond incredible. What a legend!
Absolutely agree with you.
That struck me, too. Just think of the intensity of his life, the staggering highs and lows and experiences.
Anyone else catch Paul starting to beatbox the beat at 1:45? Haha that was dope, no limit to Beatles' talents
I think he was imagining coming in at that part playing his bass. He sung the notes to it, he just couldn’t mimic it very well.
What a fucking amazing interview that was. Paul has been in the studio for Howard a few times but this was one of the best ones ever since Howard asked about the creation of so many songs. I also loved how Paul will dispel the many rumors that have gone around over the years. So great! Love him.

We need more of this revelations and paul debunking rumors!
After Paul said “what a great little memory”. I felt sad for him not being able to sit next to John and reminisce about songs like this one during an interview.
Ditto. I was wondering how long it's been that he thought about that scene, and what other little memories there are hidden away.
What are you a wussy. Get emotional over your own life experiences not someone elses.
Howard again displays his amazing ability to get the best stories out of his guests.
This is so true. Decades of other interviewers asking Paul the same questions and Paul rehashing the same guarded scripted lines, but Howard gets most of the hidden treasures from him. Such as asking him about John and rumors of homosexuality. Truly fantastic interviewer

And his interruptions are shitting on a lot of those great stories. Howard is so afraid of forgetting to ask the question, that he can't spite it out quick enough. Give us a break Howard.
I could listen to these Beatles anedotes ALL DAY LONG
That's revealing. I'd heard that John didn't like “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” too. It's interesting that John came up with the intro for it.
John, and the rest of the Beatles for that matter, hated the fact that they were spending so much time and energy doing take after take after take of the song. They didn't dislike the song itself...

the end of this video makes me tear up. and i think it makes Paul almost tear up too. Miss you always John!! RIP
You can tell in his eyes and the way Paul talks about John that deep inside he really misses him.
How to write a song, according to Paul McCartney:
1. Take some chords and make a song
2. That's it that's all you do
3. *be Paul McCartney to start with
I read that the three of them Paul, George, and Ringo had been working on the song for hours playing it at a slow tempo, then Lennon came in and sat down at the piano and played it fast. And of course, that is how they did it.
Paul told the cleaned up story. The more honest one was that John stormed out of the studio in a huff sick of playing the song and then returned stoned out of his mind yelling "...AND THIS IS HOW THE FUCKING SONG SHOULD GO!!!" banging the intro on the piano while Paul (according to Geoff) looked like he was about to take a swing at him
Ya i get the impression john just wanted to get it in the can so they could move on to the next track......they logged alot of hours on this

I love John's voice at the back saying "Ring!" and "Thank You!" in Ob-la-di Ob-la-da that shows he had fun making this song.

Paul talking so fondly about working with John is one of my favorite things
Love that Paul used the “It’s nothing too much, just out of sight” line on a Bloody Beetroots tune. Music transcends.
Great video, nice job, Howard. This is the kind of stuff I love to hear about, song construction..we really can't take these kinds of insights for granted because one day we won't have the pleasure anymore.
Man the stories I bet this guy has that we’ll never hear!
@@tlatosmd umm ya but... i dont think thats what he means
@@tlatosmd wth??
@@tlatosmd Oh, yeah, that was wild! But it's true, there's surely a lot of momentos either hilarious or emotional that they will keep inside to the grave... They were normal friends living their youth, after all.
I love when artist talk about writing their songs. A bet that was a glorious moment
"We used to go to clubs late at night. Drink, dance, maybe a little food."
i bet
I could honestly listen to this legend speak for hours and hours and hours
The Beatles were masters of melody. I'm a metal head but I do enjoy their music, so catchy.
I love his explanation on how it came together!
Love that hes letting his hair whiten like a normal dude lol looks good on him
Awesome men, awesome interview. Love both Howie an Sir Paul
without the Beatles and John we wouldn't have the music that we have been listening since the 60's....Best Band EVER!!!....
To be honest, that's a dangerous statement to make lol
how amazing it is that he get to sit down with one of the all time musical greats
Wow... Sir Paul is in a very good shape
And from what i've heard, he's just finished his tour to japan
Can you believe this guy is already 76 years old?
I'm hoping that Sir Paul is live long enough to do one last Beatle reunion with Ringo
Ps : Paul is alive
I'm seeing him Live in 3 weeks.
Yes, he looks as old as he is. Ringo has actually aged better and he is a chain smoker.
I love this song. So uplifting! Sir Paul is a legend 😊✊🏼🎉
It was good enough for Offspring, they used it for there hit song Get a Job.
Lol love that song and never thought about that...good ear bud!
1:31 so John comes in to the studio and makes up a rhythym for that amazing song just like that, VERY FAST, without thinking... WOW!!! 😲😍❤ He's pure brillant and special! Never have i ever heard something like this😲
He really does remember everything
As the years go by , I think it’s important for Paul to share as many memories he can about the greatness band ever!!!!
Yes, hearing Paul talk about the Rolling Stones would be wonderful but he should throw in some memories of The Beatles here and there too.
When I was in Kindergarten we sung this song all the time. Also Yellow Submarine. Way better than the rubbish kids music of today that's served up
Always LOVED that song! Good to know the story behind it!!
no idea why people hate this song, I love its cheerful randomness
The piano introduction of Obla di Obla da is unique!
John wouldn't like a song on Monday, love it by Wednesday. That's just how he was. Maybe it was a put-on, but the quotes show it. Love that, even if it didn't leave it clear exactly what he liked and what he didn't.
Correct he was a complex character
That's John for you. And isn't that just about the essence of what we love about him?
^cause that's what he felt like during that time, opinions change man, and so does John, he even had an interview w/ George that proved this, where he said he was qouted on saying something years ago but he doesn't feel that way anymore when it was published, very opinionated and complex person, no wonder he likes to hang out people who have a strong personality.
Anyone working on a song for too long will grow to dislike it in the moment.
I think they were the best collaboration in Music. Many of their songs were almost magic.
I should listen to the whole interview, but an interesting little tidbit.
The “Desmond” mentioned in the song is none other than the great ska singer Desmond Dekker.
Recorded "The Israelites".
