As if the blackberry doesn't give you enough with its delicious fruit, the leaves make a tea that is the best cure I've ever come across for gastrointestinal problems. In addition to the 'regular' wild blackberries, my place has trailing dewberries (I grow 'em in tomato cages), which are like a jacked-up, super-sweet version of the fruit the size of quail eggs.
I love your comments and totally agree about the blackberry leaf in tea for the stomach. I grab the tips of new shoots when I use it for tea. I like the tomato cage idea because I have a ton of extra cages. Thank you for stopping by
Growing up people and garbage trucks ran over those long tree branches hanging down dropping thousands of berries in the alley every season. I even heard them say you can't eat those. I would have ate tons of those if I knew. Flies and bees by the thousands were always in the area and some big garden spiders for a city setting. Those trees were everywhere.
That’s so true re same wild BlackBerry plants tasting different depending on where they are growing. I’ve picked Blackberries from the Wild where they taste great, then walked down just 6 feet to another patch and they tasted different. With blackberries I really think they taste according the ground make up directly below each patch.
Takes me back. Berry patches followed by ticks & chiggers. Then by tick inspections & hot showers & berry cobblers, pies, shortcakes and jams/jellies. Yep. We'd sleep very well on berry days.
Don't forget the joys of poison ivy. And the drowsy buzzing of mosquitoes. Not to even mention the pleasant sting of the berry thorns. Yes, those are some fond memories.
I realise this was 4 years ago, but do you know the variety of blackberry bush that was grown alonside the trellises? I know that Prunus 'Cheyenne', Prunus 'Shawnee', and 'Prunus Choctaw' are the Tennessee thorned varieties and that Prunus 'Chester', Prunus 'Hull', and Prunus 'Navaho' are the non-thorned varieties. (Although I know it's probably not 'Navaho' given they are alongside the trellis). If you don't know or remember, that's cool too, it's not like it matters that much. Otherwise thank you. I looked up wild blackberry growers in the North America and the internet answered with this gem. Cheers!
Im glad to know they recommend you here. In fact this was in rogersville tn in east Tennessee. These are wild blackberries, non-cultivated. I had some slight variation too with what the birds would plant along the fence. Some were sweeter and those would ripen a week or 2 sooner than all the rest. There are so many wild blackberries and varieties everywhere. I noticed the Thornley type grows up near the blue ridge parkway also I between Gatlinburg tn and Cherokee nc. I recently purchased land in coastal nc near the sc border and found a trove of wild blackberries and wild giant blueberries. The blackberries are lower growering and not as aggressive is this wild tn type. They also bloom much later as well. Don't know about fruit yet since I bought it in the fall and I'm learning these new native varieties. I thought about offering blackberries for sale on our tough citrus website. Www.toughcitrus.com CHEERS 🍻
Hi! Have you got any thornless blackberries? I hear they're very sweet, big and productive. One guy in Romania says he can pick ~14 kg per adult plant. They would be great for the kids as well, if the plants are thornless.
Citronella oil and lemon balm oil mixed - I mix mine with rosehip oil as the carrier Fill a spray bottle Will help keep the blood suckers at bay I'm a granny so watch your language XOXOX
I like to fresh freeze a bunch which conserves live enzymes. Ticks do love to walk up that tall grass waiting to jump on... Maybe now that the edible wild perennials are set in maybe could start choking off the weeds in between with wood chips. Nice food forest, I know to grow tons of berries because kids will eat em up!
Thank you, yeah once I get a ot of the berries I will chop and drop real heavy and make room for all.next years canes, cut out these old one too. The kids deffinetly love picking the berries, almost as much as they love eating them all. Take care
This has been a good year for blackberries--ours are fat and plentiful like yours here in GA/TN 7a. The trade-off has been a drastic reduction in the wild mulberries. I think the heavy rain that contributed to this bumper blackberry crop must've knocked off the delicate mulberry flowers because this has been the _worst_ mulberry crop that I can remember. Stuffing ourselves with all these kick ass blackberries instead.
i would be ashamed to say i charged for those berries come to ohio ill show you what blackberries look like i can pick a 5 gallon bucket full in less than an hour
BlackBerry jam, smoothies, pies?, or just washed and eatened raw and whole, or maybe a bowl with some of that pure honey your youtuber buddy sent ya, then again blackberries and homemade whipping cream(cool whip is artificial)? LOL....the other day when you were picking the wild raspberries, your youngest son was eating 4, saving 1 because they were so GOOD, lol....seems like you also cave in to the yummy blackberries, I don't blame ya bro! I guess living up here in this semi-arid climate, I could do the same with garambullos(a barrel cactus Berry), the only thing that I don't like about garambullos, they're filled with so many tiny seeds, don't compare at all with blackberries or raspberries. And the raspberries sold here are expensive, these little plastic trays with their plastic lids, contain 170 grs.worth of raspberries which is equivalent to a "one cup measure", they cost around 30 pesos which would be about 1.50 usd, EXPENSIVE but they're so good, totally worth it to buy 'em, even more worth it to GROW THEM! :) Uh-oh, sorry for the comment Aaron, got carried with Berry fever! lol....
Oh man I totally agree, here in the states they are so expensive at the store. It' nice to have so much, thinking of doing a stand and selling some next year as we get more fruit from the canes I topped. By I have a nice jar full of pure uncooked berry sauce I put through a press, some raspberry lemonade I made with the seeds from the press, 2 jars of jelly, and these 2 big bowls in the fridge, oh also a good bit frozen already too. Berry fever is deffinetly in effect!!! Take care buddy

Chas Z yes. All the berries make a great tea ( actually tisane as no " tea plant leaves" in it) From Young leaves. Delicious.
Interesting, I've heard same with Strawberry leaves !

I know what helps U-Pick is the customer is picking from the last year canes . But what do you find how gentle the customer is with your plants ?

Afaik ticks love grass, tall grass, and rain.
Do your bushes have thorns? I remember pickings blackberries & mulberries as a child but I do not remember so many thorns!
All our wild blackberries in southwestern VA are bitter and sour, so that's great that yours are sweet.

Did your berries start popping up because you stopped mowing?
Your lucky. I haven't seen blackberries in the wild forever....
can you grow FIGs in your climate?

are deer much of an issue?
You don't have a tick problem. You have a lack of chooks problem.
Yeah it was nice when we had the chickens, they deffinetly kept the ticks at bay
Chicks for ticks. Ducks for slugs.
Do you know the scientific name for wild raspberries by chance?
i would be ashamed to say i charged for those berries come to ohio ill show you what blackberries look like i can pick a 5 gallon bucket full in less than an hour
