Thank you! I transplanted quite a few ‘raspberry’ bushes 2 years ago thinking they would give fruit. They didn’t til this year but the fruit is ‘black’. I am so happy they are black raspberries! I have a ton of larger male stems that came up this year, now I know what they are and how to tell these apart!!
PHENOMENAL video! My husband just exposed a bunch of brush on the edge of our property, and to my delight he uncovered loads of berry bushes (and his delight as well, once he starts receiving baked goods from the harvests!) In fact, we've had raspberries growing all around the property this whole time, but I've been tearing them down because I thought they were weeds - oops! I started scouring the WWW as soon as I found them. Thanks to your video, I was successfully able to identify that we have all 3 kinds of berries! No ripe fruit yet, but the petals are falling off the flowers as we speak, so harvests are just around the corner. I didn't know until today that there were black raspberries, and soon we will be eating some. I am so excited now, THANK YOU for such a thorough video!

So helpful! I went on a mini hike near a south Texas beach yesterday and I was so amazed to see what looked like thousands of raspberries and blackberries and just thought there's no way! I couldn't help but eat them right away bc I was also starving lol. At first thought maybe this is one of those weed plants that look edible but arent but they tasted like the real deal and I went straoght to YT to search for identification vids. I really appreciate this video I’ve had wild blackberry glowing in my yard for years and been cutting them down not knowing because of just routine maintenance around the Camillia bush until this year I have been letting the maintenance just go by the wayside and I saw when I went out to do maintenance that there were large growing Blackberry shoots growing
Blackberries can get very large, pruning them to a certain height can be good idea, and you should still get a decent harvest.

Thanks! Now I feel better rounded in my relationship with my wild red/black raspberries. I'd been coaxing a couple of young, wild raspberry bushes out in the back for a couple of years now. They flowered didn't produce for years until it struck me that it takes a lot of energy to self support those canes, energy that might otherwise go into viable flowers and fruit production. I placed a couple of those cheap garden trellis things in their midst and carefully 'wove' the young, pliable canes through and the plants responded with a flush of flowers which finished with prolific and sweet fruits. It seems that a bramble or thicket of old canes provides a thicket some mutual support for the bushes in the wild, aiding and allowing vital energies to be channeled towards fruiting instead of fighting gravity and wind.
I've found that squash, cucumbers and such grown in containers similarly flower but wont produce fruit until vines are finally resting on the deck surface or having found support on the railing - again seems like energy, stability factor.
Your video is highly informative without the fluff that seems to be the rule anymore, appreciate your time and knowledge!

It turns out I have a bunch of raspberries around the house. I was afraid of poisoning myself but I've spent some time to become convinced that yeah, they really are raspberries. And they're quite good!

Thanks for the distinguishing features of each. I had learned long ago about the empty and full cup/under attachment area. I’m pretty sure there’s another feature at the fruit though I can’t recall. I was not aware of the male/female years of the plant. I feel like I read that after year two it no longer produces and can be cut out of a tended garden space. 🤔

Good explanation, well done! It is a good thing to know what we are looking at!. Of the three,I like black raspberries the best. Here in Wisconsin, they are called blackcaps. I grow a couple varieities, Cumberland and New Logan. It should be pointed out that all three fruits grow wild, and they are readily available and fun to pick in many public places, and you can also grow different varieities of them yourself! I grow blackcaps and rhubarb for important ingredients in my semi-dry cherry wine, which is yummy 😋

No raspberries can be found growing in my country and only managed to buy some when I was in Australia just to have a taste. They look so beautiful and I always think that they look a lot like mini grapes. I like how you explained and distinguished between the red and black. Good job! 👏👏
Haha, I love that comparison to mini grapes! I was surprised to learn how easy it is to distinguish them by the thorns, so I just had to make a video on it :)

these grow all over my property but ive never done anything with them ik they attract deer to my yard so thats awesome, but id like to try making jam out of them this year

Another easy way to differentiate a blackberry from raspberry is that the latter has a white color on the underside of the leaf, it’s green for the blackberries. I didn’t know how to tell a red from a black raspberry before fruiting, thanks for your excellent video.
I have a wild raspberry variety that I’m not sure the name cause the birds planted them for me along my grape vine. They are more purple then black when not over ripe and ripen on the end of the cluster first then the following ones. The ones in a bit of shade during ripening do the best for some reason. I’ve been pulling out bs weeds and other invasive berries that birds plant for me. Thank Jah for these wonderful gifts of the woods.

I want the blackberries gone.. but I wanted to make sure that I pull out the right bushes.
I do have a thornless blackberry patch... those vines grow crazy long. I think that I’ll need to prune them to keep them manageable.
Now to go back and brave the briars gloveless!

Give it a Grow lol, yes, a bit painful and slow going... thinning out the vines is less fun this time of year.. no berries to eat! And the poor raspberries, they are having a hard time competing with the blackberries!

Where i grew up Eskasoni first Nation. They grew in our back yard. Eat them walking down to beach. Bras dor lakes.... I need to learn propagate them. Grown some on my yard too. This yr im gonna try.
The black raspberries near me have pretty large thorns compared to these and very pale green stems (very whitish). They tend to grow near the wineberries and the wineberries are more common. I wonder if that was just natural selection (bigger thorns survived in my area) or if it's hybridized

@@scottjosen2606 As a kid, I spent every summer in RI. We told time, by what berry ws ready to be picked. We all knew that when the elderberries came out, it was almost time for school.
@@nancymasek4349 you can usually do that where I live in Southeast Kentucky but all the berries where late this year. Wine berries and blackberries are usually ripe around the forth of July. This year they just got ripe about one week ago which would be the 20th.
I just dug some up out the woods in my backyard for my mother . She had just said she wanted some .

My backyard had some blackberries for years but one time I tried one because I heard they’re fine to eat on the internet but my dad said they’re bad to eat even though I was fine and he got rid of the berries.
We picked some wild raspberries today ~ There was not much left
but managed to find about 10 of them ~ We found them unexpectedly while taking a different route for our walk 🌿

So there's 2 types of black rassberyies in my yard there's a large/normal berry type and a small berry type the large ones tend to have more flavor.
Yeah, I think i've noticed that too. I see smaller one in the park that like more sun and produce lots of small berries.
Excellent video, but you didn't discuss the undersides of blackberry leaves compared with the top sides. Are they lighter in color on the undersides, like black raspberries, or almost white in color on the undersides, like red raspberries?
Blackberry leaves are lighter on the underside and have little thorns too.
Is it best to pick black raspberries when they are black or when they are red? Thank you for this video it was very informative, I just found out that what I thought was wild blackberries growing in my front yard are actually black raspberries.
Pick black raspberries when they are black, or dark purple. They are sooo sweet :) and should be easy to remove.
i have berries in my back yard. they have 3 leaves very ridged, or you said teeth. the stem is red and green and the thorns are crazy. i am way too scard to touch the thorns they look gnarly. i think they are blackberries cause they taste the best when fully dark and no red on them
Blackberry thorns are the worst of any berry I know of. They are actually worse than a lot of thorn baring plants berries or not.

Leaves of three let them be. You just confirmed poison ivy doesn't have thorns and I have wild blackberries on the other side of my chain link fence in my back yard by my bird feeder. I'm weaving them in my fence like a grape arbor.

Does anyone know where I can pick some blackberries in Maryland? I love them, but where I live in Baltimore all I find are the red raspberries, but I don’t like them! They’re too sour!
Blackberries, or black raspberries? Blackberries you can get at the grocer, they have large seeds that you can grow at home. Black raspberries may need to be ordered online.

@@GiveitaGrow Wanted to thank you for the nugget that the first year the black raspberry stalk is male...i think you said I have several black raspberries, originally planted by a bird.... and when they reproduce, there are always a few, very tall , straight majestic even, stalks with the powder on them, that have no flowers nor berries. I was wondering why. Do they ever produce? do i leave them? I started with 2 or 3 plants and now the ones with berries are about 20, and the males are about 5 or 6. Yet, there is something else growing with them, that look like them, but their berries are behind the others by about 3 weeks. Maybe some red rasp? Will have to check them now. At one time we had a gift of some white raspberries, but they have all disappeared. Thanks for the info. You made it easy and obvious.
