In this video we take our entry level AR-15 built from a CMMG Mk4LE parts kit out to the range to do some practical accuracy testing out to 300 yards. We use nothing more than the Magpul MBUS rear backup sight and standard front sight base that comes stock on this setup and a 50 yard battle sight zero. Stay tuned as we will be upgrading this rifle with a new trigger, free float rail and optic and see exactly which upgrades provide the best improvements in accuracy individually and collectively in future videos. As always, much more on the way.

is this the cali version that shoots 500 rounds a sec and uses hi cap clips and is invisible...i have a ghost gun..its name is spooky
clips?............ Really?
No this one shoots chainsaws and has a detachable ammo-belt box filled with grenades
@@Dipstick252 liberal terms. He was being sarcastic
Randy M yeah, 30 caliber clips
Mine is the same. But it's as heavy as any 10 boxes I would move but it' shoots Lazer guided death bullets.... none of those tickle bullets for me!
Well done, gentlemen. Shooting iron sights is a skill. Learned on irons many years ago (the 70s), switched to optics in the 90s, then recently tried irons again. Horrified by how much I had forgotten and had to re-learn. Eric and Chad are extremely humble in this video.
This is basically my first ar. I took it out for the first time yesterday
I am an amateur shooter. I was amazed at how accurate I was with iron sights. It really is love at first shot. I can't wait to build another one.
The AR platform is damn good. They're more accurate and more reliable than ever, too. Don't let anyone fool you, the .223 or 5.56 is a nasty round. I've used it on four-legged and two-legged targets and it has worked very well.
I Love guns! Thumbs up if you agree!

Glad you did this. Proves that you don't need a tricked out railed, optic ar to shoot and be accurate out at distance. As long as you can make hits on man sized targets out at distance

You guys are awesome. No gimmicks, no douchey attitude, no BS. Nice work fellas.
In a world with overpopulated Mall Ninja ARs, it's nice to see the basic stuff again. I went back to building basics only.
Thanks. I'm doing my first basic AR 15 build myself(PSA Freedom Rifle)28th a few extra goodies such as a red dot and 3x magnifier
Keep those videos coming! :)
2:28 I believe the small and large apertures on iron sights are used when shooting in low light/daylight conditions as well. Large aperture for night time, small for day time.
Loving how loud that reset is, or is that because of your mic?
It's a mix of both. Good resets on ARs are loud, but his mic makes it louder than it seems.
Trigger reset sounds so crisp, I love it!
This rifle has got to have the loudest trigger reset I've ever heard.
good tip on the brass ejection nobody ever mentions that, thanks!
hey eric can you post more videos of you and chad hunting i would love to see you guys do that more thank you
BRO you need to make more videos of REELMEN8888 plz it would be a epic channel GUYS SUBSCRIBE to that channel!!!!
Believe me brother I want nothing more than to go do some more fishing videos! I'm working on it!
thumbs up for fishing videos here ! :p
any more meltdown vids coming????
first firearm i shot was an M16. first time hearing gunshots were from an M16. all thanks to the Army. just love this platform.
I was just about to do a video on this type of stuff. I built a super cheap, base line ar15 and took it to 100, 200, and 500 yards. I was really surprised at the accuracy from it. It 200 yards was nothing with iron sights. I put on a cheap 3-9x50 for 500 yards, and it was not hard at all. The gun was Anderson barrel, Anderson bolt, a2 front sight post, Ncstar Vism flip up rear sight. Scope was leapers mil-dot.
Hey Guys, I just wanted to pop in and say thank you for your contribution to the 2nd amendment community, the youtube presence of our community, and the direction you have taken your channel. I started watching about 7 years ago in the Barry and Eric moss pawn and gun counter days, primarily the gun gripes vids. Love and keep up the good work.
Back when I was on active duty in the Marine Corps we qualified at 500 yards with iron sights on an M14 I believe it was 762 ammo
Don't know if you will see this 8888, but i had an idea for an armour test. Get your hands on some AR500/550 armour, and then get access to a 7.62 calibre minigun using green tips. And see how many seconds of constant fire it takes to rip through that plate.
Every time that steel goes ping, I hear freedom ring. Doesn’t get better than this bohs.
Big shout out to chad he's always got some really good advice for new enthusiast. Keep mentioning your experiences whenever you can we are listening
love freedom ammo, my dd m4v11 really likes the 69g reloads but it really really likes 77g Barnes hpbt match lol.
Practical Accuracy : Entirety of shots fired from a bench rest.
so there is no operator error that influences the test...
That's why the military using burst round shots
@@TheMrkiddi Practical accuracy means operator error is included. This is what the military means by "effective" range and accuracy, it is determined by the average performance of individuals who participate in the testing.
@levi blankenship No. It isn't practical to carry a bench with you whenever you go shooting.
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj showing what the rifle is capable of is practical. Operator error will vary depending on situations. Propping the rifle on a wall, truck, dirt hill, trench, ect will provide identical results given you are a competent shooter. Did you also want to take hos heart rate? Your Pratical accuracy would include that right?
Lol so much joy , you two are hilarious , “trickster” lol gopher hunting at 250 yards lol
That lil gun with that lil sight at 3 football fields ??? No optics ? Impressive
I bought myself a Bushmaster AR-15 and it's very accurate with iron sites. And it's louder than this video. I love it! It's awesome! 😁🤩 I'm not a veteran but I love my AR-15. I'm Native American and we don't carry bows and arrows, but nowadays we own firearms of various types. I believe in the second amendment just like all the gun enthusist. You gotta love AR-15 rifles. In AZ 30 round clips are legal I love it. ATF can kiss my ass! 😂🤣😂🤣😁
No need to obsess over tacticool add ons a good rifle with good ammo and iron sights will be accurate out to the 5.56 effective range.
I had to qualify with that same set up in basic training. It was a challenge.
Thanks for the video. I am thinking an AR for replacement, moving from a FAL AR as a replacement the direct impingement gases are not real southpaw friendly. I want to learn a bit more about the platform.
I took the carrying handle off my M-4, and put an A1 rear sight on it..... Rifle is fine.
hey guys. I just had one question about iron sights with regards to the AR platform. I recall watching some documentary once upon a time. I think it was on the history channel, but I don't remember exactly. What was mentioned in this show in particular had to do with the design of the IWI Galil and what feature it had that made it easier to have tighter iron sight groupings at greater distances than the AK-47. I am referring specifically to the amount of separation on the sights. With the AK-47, the front sight is almost right at the end of the barrel and the rear sight lies immediately forward of the breech. With the Galil, the overall separation of the two sights was greater than that of the AK with the rear sights being just short of where the shooter's face would be. This greater separation of the sights, was what they attributed to tighter shot groupings at 100 meters than would be achievable by the AK. In the documentary, one man had the AK and fired X amount of shots at 100 meters, the other man had the Galil and did the same. Both men were formerly of special operations groups and were very highly trained. Even so, could the depicted defecit in iron sight accuracy on the part of the AK be attributable to shooter's error, or can accuracy be noticably effected by placement of the front and rear sights when designing a weapon? If that is the case, is it possible to extract a little more accuracy from an AR by changing the placement of the front sight from being at the end of the handguard, to beng right at then end of the barrel? Would such a modification be practical?
"I love air castles" wut
I don't comment much on videos by guys that was a real good video right to the point
Thats some good shooting with iron sights
I think both of you should start shooting paper targets. Yes that sort of defeats the gongs because you don't have to walk down range. But we both know a little walking is not going hurt either one of you. :)
m-16 a2 we were right at 1.5moa at 80% of shots, USMC ssp.
Can you guys do a video on how to zero your AR sights when using MBUS rear and the A2 front sight?
Background: For my basic training M-16 rifle test in the 80's, I scored expert first try, so I'm good with a rifle. That said, I've never had to apply that skill in a combat or self defense situation. My question: What is the typical range for most rifle to rifle combat? I suppose the answer depends on the setting - urban/desert/wooded. But generally, I would think no less than 300 feet to your enemy target is the ideal range if killing them is the objective.
Depends on the situation, like you said. Prior to and during WWI, longer distance shots were the norm (500yds, +). They switched to bayonets, machine pistols, and shotguns for anything closer than 100 yards. In WWiI they noticed that rifles were almost always used within 300 yards, hence the development of the intermediate calibers that dominate to this day. Today in Afghanistan the average engagement is increasing in distance, leading to more and more DMRs being fielded, but in Vietnam the jungle made engagements very close encounters. It depends entirely on where you are going to be doing the fighting, and selecting your tool for the job at hand.
As the other guy just said. But in urban settings it seems to be around 120 yards and in the open around 4-500. For poice e sub 50 yards.
Evan Daire Most police sniper shots are under 75 yards.
Try the SightMark Ultra shot plus you will love it .
if you want to do accuracy of the rifle itself and not the shooter... lock the rifle in a vise and check the grouping... then compare it to the different grouping from the different sights... (been saying this for 40 years)
Think the next video you guys do on the range were it hard to see the bullet hit the target in the video. I would put some kind of Notification to the viewer to what target you are at now. For example when you switch from 100 to 200yd it would be nice for you to label the target in the video that this is the 100 yard target and this is the 200 yard target
If you have a 1:7 twist then you're way over stabilizing the 55s. That's why they're not shooting that well. Try some 77gr rounds and I bet they will shoot better. Nice videos though!
There is no such thing as over stabilizing a round.. Internet myth. Ideal Twist rate is determined by length of bullet not weight but heavier bullets tend to be longer. Some rifles like different weights in bullets or types of bullets in same weight. The only problem with fast twist and light bullets is sometimes a light jacketed high velocity bullet will come apart with to fast a twist. The 22-250 with a fast twist light bullets is the one most common with this problem. FMJ bullets will not have this problem.
Love these AR basics videos. I'm increasingly concerned AR's just won't be available any more come January. I'm not able to get one yet which is discouraging. Thanks for the videos though. Keep them coming.
Some people simply don't realize how difficult it is to shoot off a gofer's toe from 250 yds with BUIS only.
Eric with the eagle eye! slam that steel baby!
would an ak do this?
Short answer- YES
But your question is too open ended...... If you get a last ditch rifle and put garbage ammo through it, it can have up to 4-5MOA accuracy; But a well manufactured AK with Wolf Military ammo (any kind really) can easily match this level of accuracy. The whole difference is that 7.62×39 goes transonic several hundred yards before 5.56×45 will; although with 5.56 even shooting hot loaded, heavy grain bullets or something similar still doesn't have the terminal effect most people want at such ranges. (Pushing either cartridge beyond 500m involves fighting the wind a good deal as well)
So, the long answer is- both platforms have had decades of R&D behind them as well as the ammunition they use, meaning within reasonable engagement distances (0-300yrds) with either platform; AK or AR, rifle or SBR, FMJ or HPBT, they will always out-perform the end user.(99.999% of the time). There are the few...
Jake Dunning best damn unbiased answer I've ever heard to that question good sir. I salute you.
Yes...enter the AK-74 in 5.45x39...the Russian answer to 5.56x45. AK-74 is better compared to AR, not the 30 caliber AKM.
this is insane. you guys make this look so easy
Interesting video. I look forward to the accurusung sequels you mentioned,
Oh man awesome vid guys! Really looking forward to seeing what this exact rifle before mods with an optic on it will do. Great series guys!
Why did you call it an M4? An M4 is an "Assault Rifle" what you have built is a "Sporting Rifle", call me whatever you want for being so particular but in this day and age of firearm ignorant screwballs we need to use the proper terms. I do understand that they are similar but they are not the same!
it has an m4 style of build.
Are you calling IV8888 an ignorant screwball? He was in the army and is has an FFL. I think he knows the difference.
When he says "m4" he's talking about the style of the rifle. And yes, apart from the barrel length and the selector switch, that rifle is identical to an M4. If you disagree with that, you might be the ignorant screwball.
The Odessa Cubbage Foundation Thank You! The comments about my statement prove me right!
M4gery
+The Odessa Cubbage Foundation how long did it take to type that shit out, lol
thank you for your sight and intelligent Insight guys. you guys hit another target; i am now a fan. Happy Hollidays.
It's humid there in Georgia.
Always learn to master your iron sights cause those new fangled electronic optics do fail at the worst time (murphy's law)
Let the M E L T D O W N begin!
Neat video Eric....I agree about those military triggers.
I would like to see a long range accuracy test with cheap steel ammo in a nice AR with optics.
Love long range with irons. Reminds me of my marine corps service with the M16A2. 😆😆😆
ooh rah! Remember being taught to keep your eye further back to keep the rear aperture small/sight picture consistent and cheek weld consistent. Also, holding the trigger to the rear and "clunking" it forward after every shot. 500 yds was considered BASIC with irons.
Listen to the reset lol. All I can focus on is the spring rattle.
Oh good gosh, that trigger reset right at the microphone drives me a little crazy XD
Gonna enjoy this series.
thanks a lot for the very interesting video. It would be nice to have a zoom on the video camera to see the targets closer while they are hit.
Optics are great but This just goes to show you don't need anything fancy to get decent shots down range.
Do you guys ever notice an updward POI shift when putting a non-free-float handguard on a rest vs resting it on your hand or resting the rifle on its magazine?
that hand guard is big enough to hide a water cooler in :o
Y'all should do a video with a mini 14 and how to make it extremely accurate
Good stuff guys, looking forward to seeing the results of each upgrade.
Lets see the CZ EVO out to 300 plus yards. From the bench
Hey Joe dirt ,,,,,,, fuck you
It would be interesting if you guys did a Battle(EIC) Full Battle gear Match and used the "Rack grade" M-4, Also a Pistol Course of fire with a stock M-9. I believe that the CMP would be able to give you that course of fire because of the LEG points involved to qualify "Distinguished",, Not because you guys want to get LEG points, Just to show how tough it is..Just an Idea.
Iron sights 600 YD challenge. Whatcha got boy?
Those assault rifle-15's look mighty menacing...all black and angles and holes and such. Should definitely ban those.
You are correct 👍
When is the next video in the series coming out. I am getting ready to build my first AR15 and am trying to decide what upgrades make sense for me at this time. I want a longer hand guard with some side rails for future accessories, and am thinking maybe a better trigger.
when will this series continue!?!?!? I really wanted to see this series in it's entirety....
I love this video idea! I look forward to seeing what you guys do to this AR.
Yeah man.... great shooting guys
I call it good enough. Good job guys!
Can you guess do a review on the bushmaster ar
And Chads flavor saver!
trigger control eric haha you're pulling that trigger quick
wish u guys would have used paper for accuracy, as well as cold and hot barrel difference
Great series guys. I look forward to seeing the progression and style of rifle you make. This would have been a good time to reference the different zeroing distances though and the benefits of each. What distance did you zero this rifle?
And I commented to early ha.
Thanks guys for the great demonstration. I just completed my own AR-15 rifle build this week. This was my second build and I decided to make this one as close as I could afford to the M-16A1 i was issued in the US Army in 1979.
I finished my AR off with a nice 20" lightweight gov profile barrel i got at Del-Ton for $154.00.
I found Laura in sales there to be very knowledgeable and friendly. Don't forget to ask for mil discount if you have served ( I think my actual cost with mil discount was $147.00 )
If you tell her you were referred by William you will receive
nothing at all...haha. Well maybe you will get a free smile.
I am off to the range tomorrow. Do you guys use a specific break in method?
Always great VDO's - Thank you.
great shooting man.....
I want to hear you explain where you aim with the iron sights on your target above or below where you actually want to hit. I ask that because the sight is 2" 3/8 above the barrel.
Man that audio on the trigger reset.
Cool AR video.
Thank you.
File your front sight some to open your picture up at 300 .just a trick of the trade, and paint the front post.before you go to optics please, to really show the accuracy of this setup. I know this was out of box, but please use every trick before optics, people need to learn, with out the dependence of optics
You should make the AR into a lvoa-c
Second guy is much better I think 🤔
nice vid any chance of a mossberg 500 sidewinder kit video?
People do not give the standard AR-15 M-4 rifle enough credit for accuracy. I was one of them. My buddy and I both built DMR style rifles with 18" barrels fancy Midwest Ind. forestocks, Timney triggers the works and put 2.5X by 10 optics on them. We were at the range a couple weeks ago hitting over and over an 8" steel plate at 450 yds from the bench. I mouthed off that I could hit that with my bone stock 800.00 Stag 15 with an Acog on it. He bet me lunch I couldn't do it in five shots. Well I did it in three and was able to repeat it about every other shot. Tell you what, 8" is mighty small with a 4X piece of glass.. Have to hand to Trijicon for doing a great job with the hash marks. I was just using standard Federal XM193 ammo and those hash marks were really on the money for doing the proper holds.
What we both learned was, we would both take an 800.00 rifle with good glass on it vs. a 1500.00 rifle with crap glass any day.
Zero in at 25 meters First.
Awesome video
president excellent big deal alot of better backup sights standard hand guard perfict fantastic great target shooting perfict alot of fun shooting there great excited everyshoot perfict fantastic have nice day"
It would be cool if you guys repeated this exact video after every meaningful upgrade. That way the audience can see what sort of appreciable difference the free floating makes, the optics, etc. Just an idea.
That's the plan. It's going to take a while, but I think it will be well worth it
Can't wait to see that evolution.
same its gonna be a good video
I definitely will follow this evolution
I own 3 AR"s that I keep dinking around with. This progressive build approach is really appreciated. Can't wait for your future shows.
love freedom ammo, my dd m4v11 really likes the 69g reloads but it really really likes 77g Barnes hpbt match lol.
Trigger reset sounds so crisp, I love it!
This is my rifle, there are many others like it, but this one is mine.
That means nothing, you mean nothing
