  • This installment of our Shooting 101 series is devoted to the basic operation of the AR-15 rifle for the complete novice. We cover procedures for safely loading, unloading, and firing the AR-15, as well as all the basic controls on the rifle.
    The rifle used in the video is a BCM with 16-inch lightweight barrel and Midwest Industries M-Lok handguard. The stock, magazine, pistol grip, and rear sight are from Magpul (No affiliation. We just like their stuff.)

      I was a young Marine in April 1967 when we were given the M16. Three weeks later we were fighting NVA regulars on hill 861. Needless to say we were a little skeptical on how they would work. We quickly adapted to them a found them to be better than the M14 for many reasons. Semper Fidelis.

      How does the M16 differ? Is it very similar or totally different?

    • @johnstraub7494
      @johnstraub7494 3 месяца назад +1

      @@tonybrown9875 The M-16's from back in the 70's, when you compare them to the M-4, they can be very different. The M-16 was not adaptable to some of the accessories you now see with weapons that have picatinny rails. The carry handle the M-16 had, I do not believe is still used for military use. I had one on my AR-15 when I bought it, but switched it out for a new upper with picatinny rails. The really big difference between the M-16/M-4 and the AR-15, is that the previous weapons were capable of full automatic fire or later adapted to include 3 round burst.. I haven't carried one in years and not sure if the M-4 can fire semi, full auto AND 3 round burst, or just a choice between semi and either full or 3 round burst. You have to get that info from someone who still serves.

    I know I’m the minority here (I’m a left-leaning guy, but before you jump on me, I’ve never had a problem with guns, and NEVER advocated for taking them away), but (or maybe because) I’m a realist, and I know the importance of them, and that they are just a tool. I also am very much aware of my ignorance of guns, which is really due to being raised in a house that was basically anti-gun (my stance on guns probably makes me a bit of a black sheep on that issue). I just wanted to say, at the risk of looking like the ignorant ass in front of everyone, that this was one of the best and most informative videos I’ve ever watched on guns. I really do think that a lot of the anti-gun thought processes on my side of the aisle is fear-based, and fear is a direct reflection of ignorance (which goes for both sides of the aisle). I’m a bit less ignorant because of this video, so thank you. Well done, you really make me want to go shoot an AR!

      I'm glad Trump hasn't violated YOUR gun rights. I guess you dont care who's guns the government takes as long as it isn't your guns. But the fact is he set a precedent with that executive order making it easier for the next progressive president to continue to chip away at the 2nd amendment

    When I bought my first AR-15 back some 10 years ago,I remember asking the gun shop owner to go over the basic functions of the AR-15 platform. I had shot plenty of pistols,some revolvers and semiautomatic pistols as well as bolt action rifles and shotguns. But this was the first time I had purchased a semiautomatic rifle and wasn’t very educated about the functions of the AR-15. I felt kind of embarrassed to ask my gun shop owner about how to use it. But he said no worries,that’s what I am here for and when you walk out that door with this rifle you will feel comfortable and confident when you go to shoot it. To this day I still purchase new firearms from that FFL dealer and he always breaks down the basic functions of any new firearm platform that I buy. If you don’t understand the basic functions of that firearm,just ask your local dealer and he will give you the information to get you started with your new purchase.

      AR-15s were a tiny sideline of gun shows before the assault weapon ban (aka flash hider ban). After the ban they quickly became huge in gun shows because people don't like being told what guns they can't buy. Two of my ARs are from that period and have no flash hiders or bayonet lugs. Back in those days it was only Colt, DPMS, Bushmaster and Olympic Arms. Now everybody and his grandma makes ARs.

This is absolutley perfect for the new shooter or someone new to the platform. Or even someone who's trying to refresh their knowledge. I know that to most people who are familiar with the platform this was probably painfully simple. But with that it's much easier for newer shooters to understand. Especially a platform like an AR which can be more complex to operate.

    I understand firearms pretty well and have a deep respect and interest in them, however living in California i have never been around them much, I've taken a few handgun classes and have been to the range a hand full of times. This upcoming weekend I am going on vacation with friends and we are bringing an AR. I have not shot anything bigger than a 1911A1 and this video was a very informative refresher on how to handle a firearm. Though the video covered the very basics it was not condescending and covered a topic that not many other gun channels I follow do because they are common sense to regular gun people. Thank You

    Thanks for the video, and good tip on the trigger finger indexing. As mostly a pistol shooter I am used to keeping mine indexed horizontally along a slide, but as a newbie on the AR I found that puts it right on top of the mag release. Indexing it up on the end of the open dust cover door a much better idea.

    I started out by purchasing a "stripped receiver". Then a lower receiver "Parts Kit". Then several books and videos in how to assemble the whole thing!.
    Since I lacked certain very specialized "Tools" to assemble an AR type rifle, I had to think my way through some work arounds.
    But, eventually got it all together. While I'm working on doing the same for my "Upper Receiver" a went ahead and bought a completed upper from one of the major manufacturers, just so I could get our there and enjoy my new rifle, while still tinkering around with putting an upper together!
    The whole thing has been a great learning experience 👏.
    And I'd recommend it to anyone who has done any amateur gunsmithing and enjoys such!
    Cheers!
    And, as always:
    SAFETY FIRST !!!!!

    How times have changed! As a kid in basic training, I easily made “marksman” on the firing range with the M-16. That’s because kids of my generation in the 1950’s grew up looking down the barrel of all kinds of guns; water pistols, cap guns, 22 short rifles at the Coney Island shooting booth, even Buck Roger “space” guns. Today, all toy guns have been banned as “too violent!” It was normal for my 10 year old cousins to have their own 22 rifles. We all knew the basic safety rules - rule #1, “Don’t point a gun at anything you don’t intend to shoot.” I wonder just what the military is getting today.

      Idk if you’ve figured it out yet, but for the most part you pay for more reliability and better quality control. Don’t get me wrong some budget companies are reliable as hell but might have more lemons, you also tend to get a better fit and finish. For example an sr-15 is gonna feel and be 200x more reliable with less chance of a fuck up from the factory, then say an Anderson rifle which is a notoriously cheap rifle company.

    Good instruction! If any improvements I could suggest, it would be to be a bit more open about when you're fiddling around with racking one into the chamber and ejecting live rounds. I would have guessed your rifle was loaded when you said it was empty. Perhaps a few more finite speech to do the trick.

    2. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
    3. Keep your weapon on safe until you are ready to fire. (Situational)
    4. Keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

    Pro tip from an AR Newbie: When I first got my AR (been shooting my whole life but never AR platform) I gingerly released the charging handle to let bolt slide forward gently. It chambered a round no problem but when I then tried to pull back to eject the round, it always stayed in the barrel without ejecting. I called manufacturer and they couldn't figure it out either to the point I was about to send it back. I humbled myself and called a local gun shop. They said pull back and release letting it slam forward to chamber the first round. This is how it works when shooting anyway.; Low and behold it worked flawlessly ever since. Lesson? When chambering the first round, pull back and just let go! :)

    Is your issue with fully loaded mags a result of the mag being polymer or your pistol experience? In 12 years I never had a problem seating mags using the aluminum USGI mags loaded to capacity, either 20 or 30 rounders.

    • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  7 лет назад +1

      It is an issue with most AR mags, including the metal GI mags, but only when the bolt is closed.

    • @smolkafilip
      @smolkafilip 7 лет назад +1

      Many people never encouter this issue because they are used to loading on an open bolt.

    • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  7 лет назад +4

      That is true. When the mags are broken in a bit, it tends to not be as much of an issue.

    • @bugmanmd1576
      @bugmanmd1576 6 лет назад

      I have no military experience, but have noted this issue only with my pmags (polymer), not the aluminum mags ever. Issue was that the mag would not lock on if loaded with a closed bolt, until I cycled the charging handle. It has happened only a few times when the mags were very new.
      Seems to me a good suggestion not to jam the magazine full to maximum. Thanks for the tip!
