You have scenes like this that show you your worst fear and deepest pain as a man... And then you combine them with the scene in Spartacus where he's asked "How many would you kill for your wife?" And he goes "I would kill them ALL" and you understand that instinct on a primal level

The part of men that offers extreme loyalty.. There is no more nice Maximus. Must have watched Gladiator like 20 times, this one still makes me cry on command.
Briliant! Briliant! Briliant!
Title
Just don't watch gladiator 2.... was 20 mins in turned it off..... its a cheap follow on and when you compare this absolute masterpiece it's such a shame!!
@@davidclark2669
Thanks for the heads-up.
@@davidclark2669is it really bad or you mainly comparing it? (if you finished watching it
@@Dr.BlackPhilDr.BlackPhil you have to compare it because they've taken bits from the first one to continue into the second and attached a cheap story to to it.... honestly it's awful, if you like lots of action and war with zero story or depth to it, and no emotion of the characters then you'll be fine with this one!! Some people have liked this film but I have no idea how lol
First saw Russell as a young actor in Proof .. was blown away by him ..knew he was a force to be reckoned with...
That scene had me absolutely sobbing. The grief shown is very true.
One of the most spectacular performances of all time. Stunning.
I watch this movie every few months and weep deeply at this scene every time. She was tortured to death and he wasn't there. His grief is profound. And then you remember it's not real. Great acting.❤❤❤❤❤
Favorite movie of all time. I’m 50. Chills and tears every time.
Masterpiece
50? No your favorite movie is Clerks, sir
The thing that stuck into my head fron gladiator since i was a child was when he got told "They tell me your son squealed like a girl when they nailed him to the cross"
That haunted me still to this day now Im a grown man with sons of my own. The anger that gives me just imagining Someone saying that to me is Unreal the type of anger That you'd just use your bare hands beating the evil bastard to death!
All parents could relate 100%!
100%. I was 15 when it came out and saw it in the theater with my brother . I remember being shocked by the cruelty of that line.
❤
Juaquin Pheonix ( the actor who played the emperor) I have never ever been able to see him in my head as the bad guy. I remember how brutal he was and every movie he’s played I’ve never been to shake that character he played. Hated that character so much that I couldn’t even realize it was only a movie. 😂
Absolutely brilliant acting.
100% facts
same bro same
This scene couldn’t be better! It’s just brilliant and perfect !❤❤
S’not every day you get to witness a performance like that!

My man. Top tier
Why. Why did I chuckle out loud. Why
An epic movie, the scene that fueled the fire, he had nothing left to lose. Brilliant. He was extraordinary in this film. 😊❤
Russell crowe is a BRILLIANT ACTOR U SO DESERVED THE AWARD GOD BLESS U AND UR FAMILY BRAVO
That fucking scene stuck with me for months and I was 9 years old when i first watched that movie and became hyperfixated on it as it turned into one of my favorite movies ever when I was just a small child. Superb acting and story
Same. One of the things that made me want to to be a history major and teacher. Im 34 and still know the Greek alphabet i h
Learned in 6th grade
And he was absolutely correct. It's pretty cool when actors actually make inputs about their lines and scenes.
That was definitely the emotional high pinnacle of the movie, so raw.
That scene is a heartbreaking masterpiece. Coupled with the music, so sad and tender - it broke me. I looked around the cinema, everyone else was in tears.
Russell and Ridley - it was perfection.
That was all Russell. Ridley is a cold dead lizard like the Aliens he's so proud of.
A king bows only to his queen. The pain, the loss, the desperation. Perfect.
Well said 👏
And that deepened the scene exponentially.
that scene made this grown ass man cry ... 😢 great acting, one of the most powerful scenes of that movie
Literally one of the best films of all time
Wow bro what a hot take

@ clap your clam you donut
The pain he conveyed in that shot was incredible. That shot made the whole scene work.
That made me cry so hard. What a powerful scene, such a good actor. He has that insight. 😮
I saw gladiator as a child, and im 33 now and its my top 3 movies of all time IMO. Its a masterpiece, historical inaccuracies can be looked past when you consider the passion they put into this.
Same, don't watch the sequel
A fate worse than death, perfectly captured through music and acting. Absolute cinema!✋🏻😃🤚🏻
This was one of the most amazing acting performances you’ll get to see
Russell Crowe has absolutely delivered in pretty much every role he's ever touched. That scene was ridiculously hard-hitting.
At my father's services they handed me his flag... I couldn't get enough tissue. The tears and snot ran free.
That scene was perfect.
Awesome!!! No words spoken, just pain.
That scene totally setup the entire film....I was 16 when this dropped and it totally shook me! Powerful Russell Crowe!
One of the most powerful scenes in movie history.
Actions speak louder than words.
The first time I saw that scene…I froze on my chair, full of emotions and tears rolling down my cheeks. Very powerful moment and such an important one because it setups the rest of the movie.
This movie made me have so many emotions because of the great acting from everyone. I loved everything about this movie. This scene was so beautiful and sad at the same time because you could feel his pain, distraught and agony from losing his beautiful wife. I don’t think anyone else could have done a better job for this scene. Russell Crowe was the perfect actor for this role.
When this man tells stories from that movie you can basically see the moment, taste even... great storyteller😊
The improvisation by some of these actors is incredible. I remember after this movie I wanted to see everything Russell Crowe made.
He was in some *phenomenal* films from the mid-90s to 2010.
One of the hardest scenes to watch in Cinema History. Every real Man's nightmare.
Mel Gibson did it in Braveheart with the same effect, you watch the film and after the slaughter of his love people are horrified
And then for the villain(s) to gloat that they r@ped them before they killed their women.
"real Man" omg grow up
You have scenes like this that show you your worst fear and deepest pain as a man... And then you combine them with the scene in Spartacus where he's asked "How many would you kill for your wife?"
And he goes "I would kill them ALL" and you understand that instinct on a primal level
We know you don't know one @@PierreLucSex
Russell Crowe is an outstanding actor. Every role he has taken on has been on point. Look forward to seeing what character he takes on next👍🏼🎭🎥🔥👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
That scene tore my heart out. Great acting.
Even watching the scene cuts here makes me cry.
The anguish he portrays is so accurate.
One of the most amazing scenes in cinematic history, the emotion palpable the loss cuts like a knife. Crowe earned his Oscar with this one scene alone in my humble opinion!!
I remember that scene well. Gave me such a horrible emotional feeling of loss and grief for the first time watching it.
Russel Crowe was amazing, fing nailed it.🎉
This scene is so visceral and powerful. Great choice by Crowe.
This scene make me feel my past grief. It is beautiful heart wrenching and devastating. the vulnerability makes his heroic level feats approachable and human. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
When i first saw this film I knew they were killed but I did not expect to see that, and the way Russell acted in that moment was so powerfull and I have never seen anything that hard hitting in a movie since, prior to this moment was from saving private Ryan opening 30mins on the beach that had the same effect on me.
Brilliant choice to listen to Russell’s instinct on this- that scene was devastating precisely because of how it was done🙏👏
I remember seeing this with my dad when I was a kid & this scene always stayed with me. Powerful
Russell is a superb actor and we were all-consumed by his performance!
It was the most soul sinking vulnerable lowest moment of Maximus and could not have been captured any better!
Great acting instincts plus understanding of the character and the story being told. 👌🏻
That's the shot of the entire movie.
This scene made his character more believable... It's very powerful... the pain, the suffering, the heartbreak 💔😢...
One of the most powerful scenes. Brilliant ❤️👍🏻
That was heart wrenching. You so amazing with anything you do ❤
Absolutely right he was. It is one of the most beautiful and impressive 😊scenes ever made, not only Russell Crow but also Ridley Scott outdid themselves with this movie and especially this scene👍👍🙏 thanks for sharing this beautiful scene with me. Love ❤️ from Holland 🇳🇱
The snot is what made the scene memorable for the last quarter century.
now that i know it was just feet nailed to a board, he is even MORE of an epic actor to me
Great movie 🍿. It’s one of those that you can watch again and again..
Still tearing up at this, amazing acting
Such a raw scene. You nailed it!
“I will get my vengeance in this life or the next”
Russell hated that line
@cuckoo But boy, did he deliver that line. If it wasn't Russell Crowe, I believe that it would've been so corny.
I’m sure doesn’t want Maximus to be that kind of person, but I believe Maximus when he says it.. I don’t think it portrays anything other than pure love and dedication to his wife and son..
You don’t get the nice Maximus.. you don’t get the Maximus that lets it go and acts like his wife wouldn’t want him to do all this for her.. no no no. You get the man who has nothing to lose. The part of men that offers extreme loyalty.. There is no more nice Maximus.
He can’t wait to die and take his wife and sons murderer with him.. to hand deliver him to hades himself.. and possibly himself too.. I think the gods may understand though. They know what vengeance is.
