Wait, so now we are to believe the man that wanted NOTHING but to get back to his family, fathered a child with another woman...the same man who had ABSOLUTE loyalty to a man...and would have been the ULTIMATE betrayal to have sex with his daughter...an act that would have also been high-treason and punishable by death thus also going totally against his honor as a man and soldier. No. Fuck that BS. That shit totally undermines everything that Maximus was.
I think this subplot exists throughout the first film. It’s implied most strongly during the opening sequence in Germania when Lucilla and Maximus interact and we learn a bit about their past relationship. Then there are breadcrumbs throughout, mostly with Lucius’ character arc. I think some of the conversations with Marcus Aurelius also suggest he is aware of the relationship, but that’s just an interpretation. I don’t think it fundamentally undermines the Maximus’ character arc. We start at who he is in the movie, get small glimpses into who he was, and then go with him on a journey and see who he becomes. That’s the joy of stories though. Everyone takes something different from them. Cheers!

Why compare who was better? Crowe and Phoenix played two absolute opposites. Its interesting to hear Connie talk about who Lucius' father was, because I had rewatched the original Gladiator not too long ago and it hit me with the dialog and Connie's mannerism that Maximus was very likely his father.
I recently watched the first gladiator, enjoyed. She was great-cant believe she was my age in it. She was so regal lol. I didnt realize she has an accent irl.
Fun fact, Connie Nelson's character's name was said only once in the whole film. It was when Commodus told Maximus she was here at the camp in the beginning of the movie. After that, she was always referred to as sister, My Lady, and mother.
Genius actress. So much respect for her. Always honest and so intelligent with her choices- obviously Gladiator right at the top to display her talent. Huge fan
@@SR-iy4gg Thanks but I was referring to the scene she mentions when she introduces her son to Maximus knowing that Maximus is his father. I've seen the movie a bunch of times and have never seen that - Lucious meets Maximus on his own while imprisoned and Lucilla is nowhere in the scene. The reference is here: ruclips.net/video/vZ6P3UpPSGo/видео.html
The problem is both sons were the same age. Maximus doesn't come across as a cheater. It's one of those relationships where they have feelings for each other but life takes them in different directions.
Depends on how they write it. Maximus said "I have a son about your age." That could mean that lucius is a year older. If so, Lucilla may have rejected maximus after becoming pregnant because they could not be together. He then met another woman got married quickly and started his family. I hope they don't make him a cheater.
Lucius could easily be about a year older. Even in the film the actor who plays Maximus's son looks and carries himself a tad bit younger. So, it's possible Maximus's relationship with his wife came after.
@ Maximus is not a two timing absent father. You have no other clues to support your theory. He would have at least asked and she would have definitely said something.
There is even another bigger problem. When she goes to Maximus a couple times in the dungeons, it would have been a great time to use the info and give him extra motivation. Even more so because she clearly loves him and they are plotting to kill the emperor. So why not tell Maximus? Hey...Lucius is your son. So, please help me save his life here. In the movie, she even uses Lucius to explain her actions to Maximus. So she should have absolutely told him if he was indeed the father. Even in his last dying seconds she could have kneeled and told him "your son is safe". If this was true, it could and should have been used.
This interview gives me a renewed appreciation for Connie Nielsen and her commitment to acting. She would be great to be able to talk with, as you did.
The timeline mentioned in the script doesn't make sense for Maximus to be the father of the child... She was 16 and Maximus was shipped off on campaign before she was married. Maximus mentions he has not been back to Rome since that day he left and she hasn't visited him at any point during his campaigns or when he was in Spain as he mentions he has not seen her since Rome. I also highly doubt that Lucius Verus would have married her or remained married to her had he known she was pregnant with another man's child which would have been quite evident by the time they married. Maximus didn't learn about this marriage arrangement until well after he had already left. So, Connie Nielsen could certainly have intended for Maximus to be the father when she was acting but that isn't necessarily what the writers of the script had in mind.
I was very surprised that Connie Nielsen was not nominated for any of the major acting awards for Gladiator. Her very moving Ending Speech alone should have done that.
A lot of people just never understood how versatile and incredible Connie Nielsen's work was. Personally, I loved her in "Basic", "Mission to Mars", and obviously in "Gladiator" and "Wonder Woman", but here's the thing... did *YOU* know that her natural accent and background WASN'T American? :) Most people don't. But she certainly disappears into all of the accents she's polished and perfected over the decades.
24 years later and she still looks amazing. On a side note, that's the first time I've seen the interviewer run out of the room as the interview was ending.
Man Joaquin was such a creep in that movie. The way he leered at his sister😂 I need to watch that movie again I think for the 50th time. I was 19 when it came out, and I was so enamored with that movie with “strength and honor” in my head all the time. Plus I would get lost in that soundtrack all the time.
Man, you see her and you see Russell and he does still put his all into some of his B-movies (the Pope's Exorcist is worth watching for horror fans _just_ for him), but only one of these people has been drinking a carton of beer every night lol
This is just my opinion Jake, but I think I know full well why the incredible score for this film didn't win the Academy Award, and it's called, "Politics." If you will recall, the soundtrack from the Chinese film, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," actually won, and I'll tell you why. It was China's VERY FIRST ENTRY into the wider world of American cinema, and they wanted to give them the Oscar as a welcoming gift. That is their ONLY possible motive, because no one even remembers the music from 'Crouching Tiger.' The reason I'm so sure of this is because when I went to buy the CD of "Gladiator" at The Virgin Megastore in NYC, *the entire shelf was sold out, empty.* In my entire 76-years of life I've never seen a movie score cleaned out in a single day, NEVER. That's why I was so utterly shocked when a movie soundtrack that NO ONE ever purchased, much less recalled, actually won. To me this was the single most memorable score by Hans Zimmer and should have been his greatest moment, and they literally stole it from him. But that's just my take.
Connie Neilson, in my opinion, left more of an impression on me after watching this movie than even Russell Crowe. She portrayed the heart of a warrior in a unique way, which embodied the phrase, "strength in honor"!
Ridley Scott is very good at setting up a situation to pay it off and he does it in a way that keeps it subtle. It's a running thing with his protagonists that they are almost always stoic. It's a theme that it seems he correlates with a heroic quality.
This is still my favorite movie. I saw it 23 years ago on Camp Schwab, Okinawa. It was the early showing at 5 or 6 pm. Then my friends and I were going to go out and get lit up in Naha. But I loved it so much, I hung back and went and watched it again. And I was 21, Partying was my thing so that said a lot. Love this movie. But, I really like Ancient Roman History so this was definitely my kind of movie. And Connie Nielsen is straight up gorgeous! She really is! She has that classy kind of beauty to her where very few women even come close. Watching her for 2 hours again was NO PROBLEM for me! And as a side note, my favorite Sci-Fi Horror movie is "Alien." Ridley Scott just gets it right man! I love "Aliens" as well. Don't get me wrong, James Cameron knocked that out of the Park. It was an instant Masterpiece. But, Alien was scarier. "Aliens" is my favorite Sci-Fi action movie. By far my favorite. The 2 movies are very different. In "Alien" the crew really has no chance. They're on a space voyage with some God Damn "thing" they can't even kill. So, they're just prey trying to escape. In Aliens they bring Marines in and They go on the offensive, which is cool. But yah, one is a very well done horror flick. The other is a very well done action movie.
Lucious (or however you spell it) was not Maximus’ son. His actual son and Lucious we both “nearly 8 years old” which means obviously both conceived at the same time. The amount of Love Maximus seemed to have for his family as told by the movie does not in any way suggest he cheated on his wife. Quite the opposite, actually, as even the Emperor sees Maximus as an honorable man. I’m not buying it.
It’s not that Maximus cheated on his wife with Lucilla. He and Lucilla were in a relationship before his marriage. But I agree with you that the fact that both sons were the same age doesn’t make sense. Maybe it was a clumsy blunder on the screenwriters’ part or perhaps there was genuinely no intention of having Lucius as Maximus’s son and the screenwriter for Gladiator II decided to adopt this scenario (many fans were already suspicious of Lucius’s paternity). There are a couple of questionable things from the first film though, such as Lucius’s name being the blended name of Lucilla and Maximus, and Maximus’s last words to Lucilla and final line being ‘Lucius is safe.’
This is my one main movie I watch again and again. I love her character, so complex and her chemistry with her costar Russel Crow. One of the great beauties in film.
I thought she was great in Gladiator, and I'm really pleased she's back in this one. She's been in so many other films I've liked and it's about time she's given a starring role.
I've watched Gladiator so many times, and I never once considered that Maximums might be Lucius' father. I also never truly understand the dynamic of Lucilla's marriage. Thinking about this movie in a whole different lens now.
She is amazing. Gladiator is my favorite film of all time. I have lost count of the timed I have watched it. I am almost afraid to see the second one, because I do not want it to ruin the first one for me.
Ridley Scott: "Zimmer is doing too many films, he better not give me something recycled". Hans Zimmer: recycles the Gladiator battle score for Pirates of the Caribbean.
Did you heard some of his scores in the 90’s like Crimson Tide, Drop Zone or Broken Arrow ? Those scores contains some ideas from the Gladiator/Pirates scores.
Good memory for me: On New Year's Eve my family would go to Blockbuster and then pick up Chinese food or pizza. We kids were able to pick one movie. My mom never went with us, it was always our dad. My dad would let me rent rated R movies as long as there weren't certain things in it, and on the back, under the rating, it would tell why it's rated R, so my dad would screen it through that. When I was 14 I picked Gladiator and my dad gave me the approval, as long as I watched it after they went to bed and not to tell my mom. I watched it that night after they all went to bed. Every year since then I watch Gladiator after the wife and kids go to bed.

Its interesting to hear Connie talk about who Lucius' father was, because I had rewatched the original Gladiator not too long ago and it hit me with the dialog and Connie's mannerism that Maximus was very likely his father.
The original is still one of my favorite films after many years. Not only the impeccable performances, but the costuming was unreal!
True. I think the costume designer won the Academy award for it, too.
I can look at Connie Nielson all day
She was so pretty in Gladiator and she honestly still looks great now❤
She's quite Beautiful 😊
I got to hear "Now We Are Free" Live at Zimmer's concert about two months ago. Lisa Gerrard sang. I cried so many times during that concert.
I recently watched the first gladiator, enjoyed. She was great-cant believe she was my age in it. She was so regal lol. I didnt realize she has an accent irl.
She`s a Dane 🇩🇰
...and she is still the most beautiful woman I have ever seen on screen.
Fun fact, Connie Nelson's character's name was said only once in the whole film. It was when Commodus told Maximus she was here at the camp in the beginning of the movie. After that, she was always referred to as sister, My Lady, and mother.
Joaqim Phoenix was tortured genius in this film.
Great interview. Excellent questions and commentary to prompt insightful and fascinating background on a classic film. Loved this.
I have never heard her natural voice before. Great accent, exactly what I'd expect from a Dane. Still gorgeous.
Genius actress. So much respect for her. Always honest and so intelligent with her choices- obviously Gladiator right at the top to display her talent. Huge fan
She is gorgeous. First time I saw her was in The Devil's Advocate. Wonderful actress.
In Devil's Advocate, Connie's sex appeal was off the charts!
Great interview! Really interesting info you drew out - subbed!
She's right, i had noticed this scene and i had the same feeling...she's one of the best actresses of her generation!✌
What scene exactly is she referring to?
So agree! Lucilla looking at Maximus like she really wanted to admit it! But she tried to tell him with her look!
@@dankenton Just search gladiator am i not merciful here on youtube to watch it.
Infatti..where is this scene?
only line I constantly have in my head rent free "Today I Saw A Slave Become More Powerful Than The Emperor Of Rome" and its been 24 years
She's a goddess
The problem is both sons were the same age.
Maximus doesn't come across as a cheater.
It's one of those relationships where they have feelings for each other but life takes them in different directions.
yeah her theory is bullshit and assassinates Maximus character.
I really like this interviewer. He seems so passionate talking about the movie
This interview gives me a renewed appreciation for Connie Nielsen and her commitment to acting.
She would be great to be able to talk with, as you did.
This interviewer is so great. I love the questions he's presenting
This was over twenty years ago and I always feel young thinking about Gladiator. It's still one of my favourite films as well as the amazing score.
Connie Nielson is one of my most-favorite actors. I can't think of one film she's done, that I didn't love her performance.
How is she so beautiful at her current age, she is a timeless beauty.
This interview was awesome!
24 years later and she still looks amazing. On a side note, that's the first time I've seen the interviewer run out of the room as the interview was ending.
Lol. She probably had the room set up for a bunch of interviews, and his time was up.
I will always remember the way she said "Maximus!".
Man, you see her and you see Russell and he does still put his all into some of his B-movies (the Pope's Exorcist is worth watching for horror fans _just_ for him), but only one of these people has been drinking a carton of beer every night lol
This guy always kills it with interviews.
This is just my opinion Jake, but I think I know full well why the incredible score for this film didn't win the Academy Award, and it's called, "Politics."
If you will recall, the soundtrack from the Chinese film, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," actually won, and I'll tell you why. It was China's VERY FIRST ENTRY into the wider world of American cinema, and they wanted to give them the Oscar as a welcoming gift. That is their ONLY possible motive, because no one even remembers the music from 'Crouching Tiger.'
The reason I'm so sure of this is because when I went to buy the CD of "Gladiator" at The Virgin Megastore in NYC, *the entire shelf was sold out, empty.* In my entire 76-years of life I've never seen a movie score cleaned out in a single day, NEVER. That's why I was so utterly shocked when a movie soundtrack that NO ONE ever purchased, much less recalled, actually won. To me this was the single most memorable score by Hans Zimmer and should have been his greatest moment, and they literally stole it from him. But that's just my take.
Phoenix is masterful in anything he touches
Great interview! Such great questions and insights!
One of my top 3 movies ...... thanks for the insight on that scene
What cool insight into one of my favorite films!
I mean.its clear as day. If their wasn't a sequel.
Oh my God she is speaking from actually as inspiration major acting drool!!!!! So brilliant! Love it! Thank you for sharing this 🙌🫶🪩
Absolutely killing interview!!!!
She is so gorgeous. Great actress also.
Can I just say, the intro rocks
Great interview
Her character was so amazing. She was the center that the whole plot revolved around.
This is my one main movie I watch again and again. I love her character, so complex and her chemistry with her costar Russel Crow. One of the great beauties in film.
I thought she was great in Gladiator, and I'm really pleased she's back in this one. She's been in so many other films I've liked and it's about time she's given a starring role.
yeah, the now we are free score makes me cry every time at the end
This was awesome! Thanks!!
I am so stoked for the Reelblend full podcast on Gladiator II, but I'll wait until after I've seen it in theaters to listen.
I've watched Gladiator so many times, and I never once considered that Maximums might be Lucius' father. I also never truly understand the dynamic of Lucilla's marriage. Thinking about this movie in a whole different lens now.
Someone said she’s now 59, you gotta be kidding? She looks unreal
Wow. One of those ladies that ages beautifully. She was amazing in this movie. Interesting to hear her insights on it.
Absolutely agree about the score. I haven't felt connected to music like that since the movie came out.
She is amazing. Gladiator is my favorite film of all time. I have lost count of the timed I have watched it. I am almost afraid to see the second one, because I do not want it to ruin the first one for me.
How does she look THAT good still?!
Now THIS is how to do an interview.
She looks amazing!
Joaquin is superb actor
This woman is absolutely stunning.
