I didn't start skating yet (I have to wait for winter) and I was wondering what you wear inside the boots. Normal socks, tights, skating or even skiing socks?
@@Milena-lg4dn I wear BONDS cotton blend above ankle socks at the moment but since I changed to new skates I'm thinking of wearing thin, woven microfibre socks as they're easy to slide into the boot and light. You want to avoid thick/fluffy socks in anything but rentals. I know some skaters skate barefoot too but I don't think I'd be comfortable that way haha
@@CallMeCass Hiya! Depends on what kind of support your current skates offer. Sometimes it's to do with the ankle support of the skate not being sufficient OR the placement of the blades being too far to the outside of your feet, this can result in your ankles "everting" or "pronating". Or it could be due to your ligaments being slightly looser around the ankle which allow it to drop into that position (strengthening and improving motor control/balance around the ankle can help with this!) xx
I started learning at age 35. What I really wish I knew before starting are 1) although it’s never too late to start learning skating, skating is a demanding sport. You need good conditions in the body, I.e. muscle strengths and good posture; 2) start slowly even if I wanted to go skating all day. 3) learn how to exercise off ice. I say these because of my own experience. I am a couch potato, not athletic at all and work too much in lab bench and on front of computes (I am scientist). When I started learning skating last year, I went too often and not even knowing the names of leg and glute muscles and of course no knowledge of posture, my knee started hurting and doctor find mild degeneration on my knee. Then after more than a year of finding the right physical therapies and learning other body work principles I finally feel good enough to get back to learning again. I am still not pain free but I now know if I do it slowly and get more active (even 15 min bike to work makes my quad muscles sore, lol), I will be better. Hope this insight helps other older and weaker adults in learning skating. Thanks for us for suggestions :).
@@ImoneOnIce thank you for your videos. They are very inspiring to me. I am 49 and learning to figure skate. I am currently working with a coach once a week. Your progress has been amazing. In the beginning stages, how often did you meet with a coach? Also, did you practice your figure skating every day?
I'm starting to learn at 53... My physical condition si good, I think. This is My purpose for they rest of they year (2022). I'll be a teacher at december... ¡Lol! Or at least I'll try 😂 Bye they way ... Sorry for My English, I'm mexican and not si good for languages.
Hi! I’d love it if you could do a basics for getting onto the ice :) I took lessons a year ago for a couple of months but have now forgotten the basics. I’d also purchased my first ice skates which I still haven’t tried out on the ice. So I feel like I’ll be brand new again learning how to skate with non-rental skates!
That's a great idea! I was thinking of doing a warm up video next so I'll do my best to add that in! Don't worry, I tend to forget the basics more often than my experience should allow me haha, but awesome to hear you've got your own skates now! x
I just want to ask you, i have started ice skating this Saturday, and oh my god i have NO balance, can you tell me about balance, and does it really take long time to have my balance? And also what should i do to have balance? to be honest everytime i go to skate it always feels like it’s my first time and i feel like I’m getting worse
Hi there, I promise I'll be answering this in my next Q&A so watch out for that one :) The more you practice and safely challenge yourself to balance on ice, the faster it will come (at least this is what worked for me) :)
please do T stops, backwards gliding and how to skate backwards as a beginner! I can do backwards lemons but cant do swizzels to go back i just don't move! also how to do your first jump would be good - the easiest one!
Do you have any recommendations on what skates to buy? I took figure skating lessons long ago, preteen and teenage but am thinking of resuming in my “twilight years.”
Hmm I suppose skates with a stiffness upwards of 30 could be a good starting point? I've only had two types of skates (maybe have a look at my New Skates video and see if either seems good for you?). Then again other brands like Edea and Riedell also have great skates for all levels. But it depends so much on your foot shape and skating needs :)
Thank you! Glad to hear you're thinking of starting! I feel like I'm still learning, it's different for everyone. I reckon it took me a few months to feel more comfortable.
I love how i can relate to you! I’m 24 years old and have been on ice twice in the entirety of my life. Just fell on my knees yesterday and ouch that hurts... Thank you for your video! Am going to sub and follow you here on! 💗 May you talk about skating gears? I see some people wear ankle stuff and am thinking if it really does any good? Also, when do you think is time to move from rental to purchase? My rink only provide measurements to purchase Edea. Hmmm 🤔 By the way, I’m looking forward to your videos! 😃
Thank you so much for watching and supporting me! It's great to hear you're starting skating :D I'll be making a video on knee pads and answer some of these questions at some point! Ankle support should mostly come from your skate and good muscle control but I have heard of some people taping. Getting skates is something that's very different for everyone, it might be worth asking your coach! xx
I’m starting tomorrow FINALLY at 12. I’ve been hooked onto skating for idek, maybe a week? I just know I’m super impatient so it was basically a GOLD MINE when I saw that the Central Park rink was still open during quarantine. So I want to ask, I’ve been doing a couple workouts to improve my flexibility and muscles, though I only started them yesterday. What are some exercises you’d recommend when your just starting and you have pretty weak muscles and only some flexibility to an extent(for me I have more on my upper body and basically zero lower body), and then ones to do while progressing for a while? Also, would 12 be too late to start skating to get into bigger competitions like nationals and internationals? Approximately how much more work would you need to put in than if you started younger? Would mild asthma also make it more difficult? Sorry if I’m asking too many questions 😅 last question, how would competitions work out if your trans(ftm)? I saw a few articles about it but I wanna know if they changed a lot recently since this was just last year and most of them are from 2004, 2016, etc. You don’t have to answer all the questions if you can’t or don’t want to, tho I’d appreciate it.
Hiya! Super happy to hear you're skating :D I'll see if I can make a video on this at some point because I definitely felt the same way as a beginner! And as Abby said below, it's absolutely never too late to start. Although there's no recipe for success, remember to consider medical advice if you're concerned and learn good technique and conditioning where you can from qualified people. As for competition, I'm sorry to say I don't know about how the rules affect trans athletes. Might be worth having a chat to your rink? xx
Abby Grace sadly, I didn’t actually get to since I overlooked that it’s open October-April since it’s an outdoor one which is unfortunate, and even it it was, both my parent’s had been pretty busy during these last few weeks so I wouldn’t have been able to in the first place, but I decided to spend my time wisely and workout more since quarantine’s done a number to my laziness, and also try to draw more and set up commissions so I can make some money to have more so I can pay rink fees
Imone!OnIce thanks! Tbh, I didn’t think you’d reply, and ok, that’s good to know, I’ve read it on a lot of articles but it feels better to see an actual person say it. And yeah, I don’t think asthma should be too much of a problem? I usually don’t get attacks from cold but I might, idk. Again, thanks for the advice!
Hi so I’m 15 and I wanna start figure skating.. not competitions I just wanna be able to skate/do basic spins etc. Do you think it is too late to start/ how long would it take to get to this stage? I can barely skate without the barrier atm btw
It's never too late to start! It takes different amounts of time for each person. Depends on how much you skate, whether you get lessons or not and your equipment/strength. Making a start is the most important part :)
I started skating at 15, I’m now 17 and I’ve honestly improved a lot. I have anxiety so when I first started skating I was too scared to venture out into the middle of the rink because I liked being close to the barrier in case I fell and needed something to grab on to, now I very rarely go anywhere near the barrier and I have SO much more confidence. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect! If it’s something you want to do then go for it, it’s definitely not too late xx
Hmm our boots do have heels but they're not that high. Walking in high heels can't really simulate skating very accurately, hence I doubt it'd make too much of a difference?
The ones I wear in this video are are Bonds Crew socks and they're medium thickness, which keeps my toes warm but thin enough not to squish my feet in my skates.
Let me know what you wish you’d know before you started skating! And if you haven’t started yet, what would you like to know?
I didn't start skating yet (I have to wait for winter) and I was wondering what you wear inside the boots. Normal socks, tights, skating or even skiing socks?
I'm a beginner skater wondering how to stop skating on my inner edges instead of upright on my ankles? D:
@@sarasadiq6918 Totally agree! I'm still super guilty of looking down when I'm working on new things XD x
