For any new sport I tried, I'd tell myself to "accept the fact that you WILL fall". Basically getting rid of the fear that you MAY fall, and just basically make yourself fall and practice falling first 😉 once that fear is out of the way, it won't hold you back!
39 years old started ice skating again 4 months ago (ice skated twice around 13 years old) roller skated about 100 times as a kid...I'm getting much more comfy on ice with K2 ice skates...my forward crossovers are pretty decent backwards I can crossover in 1 direction the opposite is a total no go...I get my ice skate off the ice now quite a bit on crossovers which I couldn't do at all 3-4 sessions ago
I'm 20 and this gives me hope I'm a good skater but I skate like a freaking hockey player and want to be poise and learn new skills. Gonna try try go the rink alone a few times a week for peace of mind and maybe try new things! Thanks for this!
My 8 year old grand daughter really likes your videos. They are easy to understand and unlike when her lesson is over, she can watch them at any time. Thanks for keeping it simple yet informative for a young skater. You are great at what you do. Keep up the good work. Thank-you.
I’m not sure why this showed up on my timeline. I’ve figured skated for 22 years. But this is great content and I’ll watch even if I don’t need the instruction lol
girl, you are the BOMB and your budda shows it. at 63, I just started ice skating and I love it. at 60, i started inline skating seriously having retired from long distance cycling and kickboxing, and you now my favorite teacher. thank you for your insight and expertise in teaching me this very important movement for skating with SOUL on ICE.
You're a great coach. I've recently started ice skating again after 26 years and your videos have really helped improve my form and confidence on the ice. Thank you.x
Thank you so much! I've only been a casual skater in my life, but now have a rink right by me and have been loving using your videos to progress skills. I appreciate the progression each skills is shown in. Thank you for making me a better/more comfortable skater!
I'm 18 and started learning to figure skate towards the end of last year, this video was super helpful as I am stuck in level one and have been worried about how to progress further when I'm struggling with basic lemons but this helped me understand better, thank you!
Today I went ice skating for the first time in nearly 20 years and really, really enjoyed it! I would definitely like to get back into the habit of skating on a semi-regular basis (even though the closest rink is over an hours drive away 😭), and your videos are super helpful! Thank you so much 😊
Yesterday I managed to do wiggles for the first time, and I was so happy about it because the previous time that I tried it I was stuck on the same spot and couldn't even get myself moving. Can't thank you enough for your videos coach!
I'm so glad I found you! :DDD You are the best coach I found on youtube so far! I'm currently training my forward crossovers, and you have taught me so much! Thank you!!!
i did learn how to skate classes but could never get backwards wiggles down. your video definitely explained what i was doing wrong and i hope i can get it down the next time i get to be on the ice!
I’m teaching Learn to Skate classes and needed some ideas to help the older beginners who would benefit from more technical explanations. Thanks for the video!
A good one that my coach taught me is to do a backward bubble, and half way lift your foot up and place it back beside your other foot. This creates momentum and it’s really useful!
@@kourtnie1 yup, its where you make a circle/bubble shape in the ice going backwards/forwards. You bend your knees and turn your feet both about 45 degrees away from eachother, like first position in highland dancing if you know what that is. Then you stand up whilst pushing your knees down, that makes you go forwards/backwards. You then point your feet back together, making a semicirle on each foot which makes a circle together :)
I've started yesterday my first ice skating experience, it was awesome! I do inline skating for 2 months now but ice is something else 😃 thank you for valuable lesson i'll try it tomorrow. Keep on your good work 🙏 and i'm 53 yo 😁🛼
I am getting much more confident skating forwards I'm ready to try backwards I think I'll watch this video just before I go on the ice again .thank you!!
I roller skate (quad skates), and i watched a lot of videos about backward skating, and i just cant get it; but i tried all the things you teach in this video and it works, thank you so much! ❤
I hope this tutorial will help me the next time I'm gonna skate. I've tried some backwards wiggles and swizzles before but I never had any momentum and would just not move at all
Why am I watching this lol I’m almost freestyle 5 😂 on a serious not though this was actually a great video for those who are just starting to learn, it was really informative!
Hi there, I am a newbie skater as well - skating on and off for a year but only recently started classes- and I have to say, backwards one-foot glides are hell hahaha
YOURE AMAZINGGGG coach ! thank you so so so much youre literally saving my life, thank you so much. keep doing this ! this was such a great tut, explanation was perfect
Thanks for the tutorial, I have been watching your videos for quite some time already. Do you have recommendations on how to improve backward one foot glides, especially holding the balance? I am really struggling with those for quite some time, especially on the left foot. I think I am somehow stuck there. I got the backward crossovers figured out pretty good, but the one foot glide is a real obstacle for me.
Do you mean one foot glides going backwards or forwards? You should have your weight pressured to the middle of your blade and you should look forward/not lean back.
Hello inge, I am wondering the same thing. I have been working on backward one-foot glides for a year now and I can't seem to get them. My problem is that (for example skating on my right foot) I seem to curve to the left (i.e. on my inside edge) and do not go straight backward. I've had many of my LTS coaches and private coaches try and figure it out, but I'm still doing it. I'm able to skate forward on one foot, but something about the backward one-foot glides is just eluding me. Coach Julia, is there anything you can suggest that will fix my problem?
I'm working on single leg gliding too. One leg is stronger than the other. I think it has to do with the tightest and stiffness of the boot and trying to push into the opposite side that you tend to veer into
@@cathylasky6962 I'm in the same boat! I've worked on weight transfer, the placement of my free foot/leg (eg, don't hold too much tension, lift my foot with even pressure through the middle), etc. Also, very intimidating to practice when there are more than five people on the ice.
@@thesu We should start a support group! Haha And oh my, YES, it's incredibly difficult to practice backward skating for me on a public session. I was attempting a backward one-foot glide, in a VERY SMALL area, near the boards when a 6-year-old hockey skater plowed into me. He was wearing full padding and a helmet. I only had on wrist guards. My bum was sore for several days. I'm very envious of the skaters I see online who are skating in a near-empty rink.
You're a great teacher! I'm glad I discovered your channel and will be back for more! I'm 52 and always skated since being a kid, but never had any proper lessons (self taught). Every year my husband builds me a backyard skating rink, so I'm going to watch a daily video of yours to help me practice. Yay! Thanks so much lovely lady! ⛸🤍⛸
I absolutely fell in love with your videos. You explain everything so clearly and show each technique in different angles. I'm about to turn 30 in a few months and I found out how fun ice skating can be. I used to surf every weekend back home in Puerto Rico, so moving to a cold state where surfing is not pleasant anymore, I was worried I wouldn't find a sport that brought me the same joy. Turns out skating gives me a similar feeling like flying over the water! I've already looked up classes in a nearby rink, and have been watching your videos every day! Again, thank you so much for your effort and time to make these amazing tutorials for us!
Another great video, Julia. Thanks. Could you do some intermediate backward skating drills to practice? The gap between the stuff in this video and backward crossovers feels huge.
Thank you so much for your videos, I'm taking lessons but your videos help me refresh my memory when I'm practising on my own and give me extra exercises to try and improve my technique. You explain things so clearly.
When the backward skating is being done are your feet meant to be in a V position or straight? Coach Julia is fantastic and explains so very nicely. When purchasing inline skates do we have to also purchase a helmet, elbow and knee pads? Thank you
THANK YOU! I've gotten so confidant with recreational skating that I can keep up with those tiny hockey kids that zoom around the ice... but every time I watch a backwards lesson, I'd get totally stuck. The detail you made about form, and skating on the front curve of your blades? THAT was my issue! Good teachers don't make assumptions that beginners know those implicit/subconscious things.
Im so glad I found your channel!! I started skating back in July at age 32 and haven't fully mastered some of these basic skills yet. Looking forward to getting in some practice and using your tips!! Thank you!!
Thank you so much for making these videos, Coach Julia! I have started getting into nice skating in the last month and a half, and your videos have been helping me so much! I go to the rink every weekend, watch the pros skate around, and try to copy what they're doing, lol. I just learned crossovers last week (it was mostly a mental block issue!), and decided to try and learn backwards skating this week. Thanks! Also... I want to buy my own pair of figure skates. Any recommendations? So far Riedell skates look good, but I'm new to this.
Hi Coach Julia, I was wondering, how can I correct my ankles if I'm turning back around in a circle instead of travelling in a straight line in a one-foot back glide? Much love, your videos are the best complement to my skating journey 😊
You are concentrating your weight on one edge of the blade. When doing any one foot glide you need to skate flat on the blade with your weight equal on both edges. Since you are skating on one edge, concentrate on putting weight on the other edge and you will improve.
Your tutorials have helped me so much! You are very sweet. I am trying to learn backwards one-foot glides and I am wobbly like a balloon :') I skate, bring my feet parallel, bend my knees, and slowly bring one foot up - but then I lean to one side, even if I engage my core. Guess I need to squeeze more! I find it very hard to position my weight correctly in my boot, I end up way too in front. Also, in the backwards slalom, I find it very hard to lean to the outside edge - I distribute my weight in the opposite way, always putting weight on the wrong foot... Any tips for that? :') My coach went nuts today hahaha
i've tried sm times but its so hard to practice when the only skating rink in your country is super crowded! im getting close but i think i can do it!!!
Hi Coach Julia, I could really use some advice! I just started learning backwards one foot glides. In my class we are doing swizzles to pick up speed, then doing a two foot glide, then lifting one foot. But every time I lift my foot, the gliding foot starts turning me in a circle! I can stay balanced, but I can’t stay in a straight line. I don’t have any problems with my forward one foot glides. Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong?
Thank you coach Julia! These beginning drills have proven to be very helpful. I've been living in MN for a few years and am now determined to learn how to Ice skate to help me to commune with the great outdoors during Winter. Loved watching you do the backward wiggles (very cute) which might be slightly feminine but proved useful. I hv subscribed and will be watching you on a regular basis. Thanks again!
Thanks coach for this helpful work teaching many of us. As a father of two following into my steps, I find your tutorials such a strong tool in guiding me to guide my little ones. Be blessed ❤
Perfect... been looking for off ice skating...but your techniques make more sense. I just wanna perfect backward crossovers... so will focus on my 1 leg ups and lemon strengths so I can gain the confidence... wootwoot.. happy skating
Thank you so much! You are a great teacher! I have wanted to skate so much since a was around 11 years, but never had the opportunity. I am now a pensioner and since watching your video. And ven if I still can't, just watching your videos are beautiful. I can skate with you. Thank you!!.
a problem with my style of skating is that my feet are kinda slanted insted of just straight up to help me balance and i cant go backwards because of that somehow. any tips for that?
Couch Julia wouldn"t have other exercise to do that, because I donn"t think that I watch me very funny making that exercise. I am a man of 40 years old. 😬
I would love to do figure skating, been something i really want to do but unfortunately i live in a dead town where the ice rinks are only open to the piblic pretty rarly and i keept missing the dates they are.
First time going backwards today.. I did backward swizzles, I was a little scared at first, but I improved really quickly! Thank you so much for all of these videos.. its a big help.. you're my coach! Greetings from The Netherlands :D
I love your videos! I was wondering if you had any tips. I have tried so many times to skate backwards. I can do backwards swizzles but not wiggles. I can’t seem to maintain skating on my rocker and get enough momentum when I skate and glide. I tried pushing from the wall and finding my rocker. I appreciate any suggestions :)
ive just started skating but im really good with going forward but its like HELL ON ICE going backwards, at least i have your videos to keep me on the right track and help me get better lol
Thank you for all the explanations of weight distribution and proper alignment- this video is so helpfful! I noticed my toes clenching and digging into the sole of the shoe particularly in backwards swizzles. Is that bad? I think it tires out my feet easily.
I have been trying to learn how to figure skate but I don't know how much or even how to get a professional trainer. I am 18 and as far a I know I can turn this into a career of any kind. I can do very basic spins but nothing advanced. Is there any tip you could share on personal training or getting a trainer.
I actually have an entire video about choosing a skating coach, maybe you can find it on here and that will give you some direction? Good luck with your skating!
I really love your videos - I watch them over and over. first time I have commented though I think. How is it you keep your legs together? I still struggle to keep mine together when doing the same move forward. I don't know why this is. Why can I not just keep them together? It's so weird. They do start together, but before you know it they are shoulder width.
the perfect tutorials for skaters that can't get lessons - thank you so much!

Thank you so much! You are a great teacher! I have wanted to skate so much since a was around 11 years, but never had the opportunity. I am now a pensioner and since watching your video. And ven if I still can't, just watching your videos are beautiful. I can skate with you. Thank you!!.
Awe. Thank you co much for your kind words and for watching!
a problem with my style of skating is that my feet are kinda slanted insted of just straight up to help me balance and i cant go backwards because of that somehow. any tips for that?
I really love your videos! The way you break down every step and remind us of what we need to avoid doing…..so helpful! Thank you coach Julia!❤
Another great video!
Thanks again!
Couch Julia wouldn"t have other exercise to do that, because I donn"t think that I watch me very funny making that exercise. I am a man of 40 years old. 😬
I would love to do figure skating, been something i really want to do but unfortunately i live in a dead town where the ice rinks are only open to the piblic pretty rarly and i keept missing the dates they are.
is it too late to start figure skating at 18? ive always wanted to be one but i never got the chance
Definitely not to late! Give it a try!!
Thank you so much for your explanation clear🙏🥰
anyone else saw the person at the back at the start of the video fall?- bless her
Such an epic fall too!
@@CoachJulia awhh bless, I love yr videos they are very helpful
Julia! I followed 3 other TY videos and it didn't work. Your lesson made sense and it worked. Thanks!
Her:💃🏽me:tries to stand on ice.ouch! Mom I think I broke my legs!
Thank you for your lessons, hugely helpful and appreciated
Glad it was helpful!
backwards wiggle its tottoally not a funny name.......cool
Wonder if it’s the same for roller skating? I’m gonna try it this weekend anyway!
5:18 what move is the girl in the background doing??
The move I saw that was closest to that time stamp would be a spread eagle.
Crossovers maybe?
Those backwards wiggles are awesome. It's like you're dancing on ice 😅😄
And 7:35 looks so funny 🤭😆🤣
Great tutorial, cheers.
The best video tutorials I have seen to learn ice skating. Thank you.
First time going backwards today.. I did backward swizzles, I was a little scared at first, but I improved really quickly! Thank you so much for all of these videos.. its a big help.. you're my coach! Greetings from The Netherlands :D
Am I that one person who naturally does stroking before learning swizzles/wiggles lol
you're an awesome coach. thank you
I appreciate that!
All kinds of tutorials! Really really?? Really really!!!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Glad you like them!
Is no one gonna mention the guy who fell and just stayed there to absorb what happened
Thank you for this. I’ve got some raw talent but no coach and I’m older than most people start but I’m picking up on things so quickly.
You got this!
Excellent tutorial, thanks Coach Julia!
Glad you enjoyed it!
