Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss that develops in men. The age it first starts is variable, where about 30% of men aged 30 years will have significant balding. Nearly all men have some hair loss by the age of 60 years. Usually it will take 15-25 years to go completely bald, but for some men it will take less than 5 years.
HOW DOES HAIR LOSS START:
Hair begins to thin at the temples and on the top of the head. A bald patch gradually develops in the middle of the scalp. Over time, the sides and crown balding gradually enlarge and join together, leaving a patch at the front.
HAIR LOSS CAUSE:
In men with male pattern baldness testosterone levels are normal. Cells in the skin (scalp) convert testosterone to another hormone dihydrotestosterone. For unclear reasons, affected hair follicles become more sensitive to dihydrotestosterone and shrink. When the follicles shrink, each new hair is thinner and grows for a shorter amount of time until the hair does not grow out to the skin surface. It is unknown why only the scalp is affected and not facial or body hair. This condition is inherited, and various genes have been identified.
WHAT IS SAW PALMETTO:
Saw palmetto is an extract from the berries of the palm tree saw palmetto (also called Serenoa Repens, serenoa serrulata or sabal serrulata). The plant is a native of West Indies and is grown in plenty on the Atlantic southeast coast of North America. The extract of these berries is easily available and inexpensive.
HOW DOES SAW PALMETTO WORK?
Serenoa repens is one among the many naturally occurring 5 alpha reductase (5aR) inhibitors.
SIDE EFFECTS OF SAW PALMETTO:
Side effects are said to be uncommon. The most common side effect is mild stomach discomfort which can be alleviated by taking it after food, also breast tenderness and a loss in sex drive (libido) have been reported.

Hi Ernesto, because it is similar to medications like finasteride it will cause shedding initially (which can be quite distressing!). If you can persevere it will stop after 6 weeks, as the baby hairs will be replaced by stronger ones.

Hi Alexandre, sorry I missed your question before, Saw Palmetto can cause mild stomach discomfort, tender or enlarged breasts and a decline in sexual desire. These effects are uncommon mind you.

Saw Palmetto is also a mild blood thinner. Herbal sources suggest stopping it's use about two (2) weeks prior to an operation. This is apparently related to another side effect (targeted effect?) of promoting increased capillary blood flow.
It was on a list of medications and supplements to tell the doctor you were taking, which was posted in the waiting room at a podiatrist's office I visited in New Hampshire about 15 years ago.
I’ve heard it works best when used topically, preferably infused in an oil with other herbs that also stimulates blood flow, block dht & lengthens the anagen phase etc such as amla oil, pumpkin seed oil, fenugreek, peppermint and rosemary. You could even add msm powder. Massage it in atleast 2mins & watch the magic happen over the course of 30days. In Indian culture, they typically drench their hair with the oil & leave it over night, then wash it out. Double shampoo if necessary.
Can I mix them all together like pumpkin seed oil, saw palmetto and rosemary ?

Would other herbal interventions, taken with Saw Palmetto, increase the effectiveness of stopping male pattern baldness? For example, Saw Palmetto with:
➤Stinging nettle
➤Pumpkin Seed Oil

➤D3
➤B Complex
There are natural supplements that combine all, or some of the above.
Would a topical saw palmetto be effective for hair loss?
When you say improved heir growth, are you saying it reversed the damage done to the follicles? As you know dht eventually makes the follicles Obsolete... so what does it do?

I tried saw Palmetto for HL and I had to stop URGENTLY because I was feeling nauxious and woke up in the middle of the night throwing up. the fact that it has an impact on DHT level and thus on the brain (don remember the exact name of the hormone hypophysis?)...this is not for me ..

I have noticed an improvement when urinating since being on Saw Palmetto. I have been taking it daily for more than 6 months and have noticed an improvement during the last 2 months. I was also advised to take Nettle tea and I find emptying my bladder has improved and I am not running to the bathroom so many times a day. I am 62 years of age. That's probably a good dose Asim. See how you go on it for a month. If you needed you can increase it up to 320mg

saw palmetto indeed work but it always depended on how much pure extract you can get from it. You have to use more potent and high efficacy form of saw palmetto. I'd suggest Sabal Serrulata 6x or 30CH potency in 480mg for proper effect.

Hi, greeting from Apple Valley California; I have been looking for Saw Palmetto and here is America there is a lot of options, most of them are vitamins with saw palmetto and the milligrams are kind of low, but there is also pure Saw Palmetto and high milligrams, my question is: Can I buy Pure Saw palmetto pills and also keep taking king the vitamins that I regular take in daily basis? Yes, they are helpful. I'm always a little wary of how much people spend on these medicines, and also being careful of "too many" vitamins causing hypervitamintosis. But otherwise, it's all good :)

I’ve been taking saw palmetto for like 10 days now currently... So my diet is basically simple. I eat fruits and veggies.
My genetics is good as I have thick way hair with perfect hair line.
1-What happens when I stop taking saw palmetto?

And I’ve been using fish oil for almost 2 months for treating my body well. But since I started using saw palmetto I skip every other day and use fish oil on alternative basis.

Hi Hemanth, thank you for your questions, I'll try to answer them as best I can.
1. Like finasteride, once you stop saw palmetto the benefits will stop - so if you have a tendency to hair thinning that will start back up again. But it sounds like you don't have hair loss in your family (particularly your mother's father's side?) it should not be a problem for you.
2. No, if you stop saw palmetto it just reverts to your baseline.
3. Actually, it sounds like you are doing a great job with fish oil and saw palmetto! I'm a big believer in getting nutrients from your diet rather than supplements if possible. If you want to take a men's multivitamin that contains zinc, vitamin d and iron - that will help your hair. I don't have a particular brand preference, but you get what you pay for with supplements. Fish oil has great omega 3 content, which is great for your hair, so nice choice there.

You may want to read the Centrum multivitamin ingredient list and do some research about what exactly are all those fillers and colors and where are the cheap ingredients sourced from. I know that it's a lot of work, but you owe it to yourself to find the highest quality supplements (you may have to pay a little more too).

Hi Sam. Just going off topic here.... Do you know if the amino acid l arginine causes hair loss. Would like to incorporate it while taking dutasteride.
I found a 2019 review article (www.karger.com/Article/FullText/492035) that said: "However, there are no studies that support arginine supplementation for the treatment of hair loss. Overall, the data regarding the use of amino acids to treat hair loss is limited." I read other blogs where there is talk about the association with hair loss, but I can't find the original papers. It's up to you! It's probably fine to take it, but no evidence that it will help.

Anything's possible, I'm not sure if you would get the effect you are after. I don't like mixing meds too much, just because of interactions and not knowing what is causing what. On the flipside, I don't think it would cause much harm.

Hi there, completely up to you. You could use Biotin and Fish oil initially, add in Saw Palmetto. There isn't particular rules on when you should start and stop these in relation to Minoxidil.
If your hair loss is not caused by DHT then saw palmetto won't do anything
if your hair loss cause by DHT then Sabal Serrulata 6x or 30CH aka Saw Palmetto in 480mg with Bamboo Extract (70% organic silica), fish oil and biotin with Green Tea extract and Pea Sprout Extract will work wonders for you. if you're in initial stage of alopecia.
Do we need to take saw palmetto throughout the life, as finasteride? What else did you mention to take along with it? I did not understand.
You need to take finasteride permanently in order to order to maintain your hair. I am sure that the same is true for Saw Palmetto because it's also a DHT inhibitor. The other drug she mentioned is dutasteride. Dutasteride is a more powerful drug than finasteride in preventing hair loss, but finasteride is FDA approved, and dutasteride is not.

I wouldn't have thought so. Obviously, discuss it with the anaesthetist, however a VSD that is asymptomatic should not preclude the surgery :)
