I believe I remember hearing that “Street spirit” is one of the songs that Thom has a lot of struggle singing live just because of how emotionally raw it is and how most other songs by them have a slimmer of hope whether in the lyrics or instrumentals but with “Street spirit” it’s completely devoid of all hope and is just completely hopeless in feeling as if having to put down a beloved pet and just watching them realising that they’ll never wake up again. Certainly strange though in context with the previous two songs being so upbeat sounding even if lyrical they’re not it just makes “Street spirit” feel like an entirely completely different beast of a song.

Btw, My Iron Lung sounds "bad", or not sounding cohesive with the other tracks because it wasn't recorded in a studio, apart from the vocals. They ripped straight out of a live set of the song

So I continue to give interesting facts for the second half of The Bends. Just: Johnny Greenwood and Thom Yorke had a competition to see who could write a song with the most chords in it. I've read that somewhere, but it could be that Greenwood just wanted to fit as many chords into one song as humanly possible. Either way, he wrote it. My Iron Lung: Most of the track is a live recording, with the exception of Thom Yorke's vocals. The audience noise is obviously removed. Bulletproof: Not much here, The Press did try to say that Thom Yorke had serious personal issues when they heard this one. They speculated that he'd become the next Kurt Cobain. Black Star: It's about the melancholy you experience after sex. yeah nothing much interesting with this one either. Sulk: The lyrics are actually pretty shocking as they're about a mass murderer. Thom shows his vocal ability strong in this song. Street Spirit (Fade Out): This song can speak for itself as Radiohead still closes their concerts with this one. I do want to mention what Thom Yorke has said about the lyrics here. He said they portray a bleak picture about how death always wins in the end. It's important to mention that because people think it's simply about love, which isn't true. It's a highly misunderstood song.
I felt the same about Black Star, but after a while it became one of my favorite songs by them Sulk on the other hand didn’t grow on me for some reason, even though they do kind of sound similar. It’s weird that some songs just grow on you but you can’t put a finger on why
I've slept on this album for so long, your review made me finally check it out and holy shit I did not expect it to be this good, some tracks off this record have easily become some of my favorite Radiohead songs.
In this review you helped to capture the best feeling possible - feeling of hearing this album for the first time. Such a joy, almost crying. Thank you so much❤️
God I'm looking forward to having another excuse to listen to OK Computer. Also I just got really into Ween, and I know you're probably not releasing part 2 of Quebec, but I hope you liked it!!
Black Star is my favorite song in recent years, not just by Radiohead but by any band/artist. I don't expect others to feel the same as I have no issue admitting it doesn't sound particularly "special", but the lyrics hit me like a truck. If I sit down and think about them rather than just mindlessly sing along I just want to cry. The song just perfectly resonates with me at this stage in my life.
My iron lung was one of the first Radiohead songs I learned to play on guitar and my god it’s a fun one to play because if you play sloppy and loud it just adds to it
I love this, considering Radiohead is my #1 band. And I appreciate you taking time to bleep out the yawning....... The yawns make it so hard to listen to some of your reviews, but the bleeps help a little. I work 12 hour days, sometimes 12 days in a row, so I understand the struggle.😆
Street Spirit has those lovely subtle strings in it that suggest OK Computer. Especially when they hit the minor 6th note even though the song itself is on the 3rd major (start of 2nd half of chorus). Taste of what's to come right there.
had forgotten about his album, will go listen to it now, I have it on vinyl, it takes me back to when I was in my early 20's, free from the heavy negative influx of the office environments.
I really like the melody of Black star. It's definitely one of those songs that grow on you over time. It just has this certain vibe that resonates with you
Hearing this has really reminded me of something back in the day when this came out. A live version of the song Just appeared from a free tape give away with a music magazine in the UK, perhaps NME or Select. Being a fan, I loved the song and album but this live version stood out because of Thom at the climax of the song cackling and laughing like a fucking manic in the feedback and crashing guitars. It must of been intense at that gig. I've no idea where that was recorded.
Just finished the first part, and it was really good. Your blend of humor and serious reaction is great. And the fact you love this album as much as me, if not more, is amazing. Totally sticking around here
I like how now Even with songs that You don't like that much (I.E Black Star) you articulate your reasons and you don't shit on them. That Songs for the Deaf reaction still hurts.... I still have hope for a Like Clockwork reaction tho.
But hey, at least the album did click with him, and he ended up giving it a 9.5/10 on AOTY. Yeah, ...Like Clockwork would be pretty neat (tho I'd personally be more excited for self-titled, Rated R and Era Vulgaris).
The funny thing about Black Star is that it was the first radiohead track ever produced by Nigel Godrich. The song is not so great but i guess the inclusion on the tracklist is all about their meeting.
The lyrics "if you're frightened/you can be frightened" in Iron Lung are about how casual fans want songs that are safe and catchy and Thom is saying nah f that we're gonna push you out of your comfort zone.
The songs Black Star and Sulk feel very of the time, esque of britpop groups Oasis or Suede. I don't think that stuff has aged as well as their more distinctive material (unless you're in the mood for some good ol 90s britpop)
Black Star and Sulk are still my favorite songs off this album, maybe my favorite Radiohead songs as a whole. It's just so real and human to me, but I get why you think it's a bit hokey.
Fun fact My Iron Lung was the first single from this album they out, so the first thing Creep fans would have heard from their upcoming album was Radiohead slagging off their only big hit
My Iron Lung was recorded live, literally it’s on DVD (Live At The Astoria). The only thing they overdubbed were vocals. You gotta check out the albums worth of b-sides - killer cars, banana co, the trickster, punch drunk love sick sing along, maquiladora.....talk show host but not the single version, the Romeo and Juliet OST mix.
I know it’s probably weird that I’m continuing this conversation on this video, but I just couldn’t let you go believing I’m saying something that I’m not. I don’t know most of what you said in the next reply because the video was deleted before I could see it, and now only a remnant of your comment is on my notification page, but I am NOT devaluing your life. I don’t know why you keep saying that. And I’m not saying you can’t be joyful, but I am saying without Christ you can’t be, and I’m sorry if that sounds harsh, I don’t mean it to be. But just because someone isn’t joyful doesn’t mean their life has less value?? Life isn’t about finding happiness, or even being joyful. And like I said, our perceptions of “joy” are very different. I’m sorry, and like I said you really can’t explain it unless you’ve experienced it, but there’s a big difference when you know you actually have a reason to live and you have something to fill you fully up. I guess my metaphor didn’t go through earlier, but regardless just hear me when I say YOUR LIFE ALWAYS HAS VALUE. You don’t have to be joyful. It’s pretty cool if you are, but you don’t have to be.
@@samboger25 "I'm not saying you can't be joyful, but I am saying without Christ you can't be..." Well I'm not religious, and you know this. So I am without Christ. So, yeah, you're saying I can't be joyful. Why do you get to determine who has joy and who doesn't? I have plenty of reasons to live that give me joy. My family, my friends, the impact I could have on people on earth, the experiences I've lived and the places I've been, etc. All of these are wonderful reasons and purposes to live. Also, you are devaluing. By saying I can't live a joyful life, you're saying I'm not living my life to the fullest or to it's potential. It means my life is not all that it could be, that's I'm not getting the full value of my life's potential. But guess what? I am. I truly am. I don't think it's fair for you to presume someone else's joy based on *your* belief systems. It's very rude.
@@K5to9X for about the 5th time, I’m not devaluing your life. I don’t know how I can get this through any other way. Yes, I am saying your life could be different and it could be more, but I’m not devaluing it. Value isn’t based on how much you’ve used your life or how much potential you’re getting out of it. A 30 year old man who lives in his parents basement who plays video games for the rest of his life has just as much value as somebody who finds the cure for cancer. One’s doing more with their life than the other, but one is not more valuable than the other. Where do you think value comes from? I’m also just genuinely curious because I’d like to know why you think your family matters, your friends matter, that helping other people matters, and that people in general matter if there’s no reason for any of it? So where does value come from and why should we care? And believe me, I don’t get to determine who has joy and who doesn’t, I don’t get to determine anything. Joy is a Biblical thing, not a thing I made up lol. I’m in nowhere to judge, and I’m not judging you, I’m just telling you you’ve got to be receptive that life could be more. And before you tell me that same thing, I’ve experienced life without Christ, and life with Christ, and i know that life with Christ is more. And i don’t say that in a self-righteous kinda way, i just say that if you say that to me, i was open to finding that life could be more, and i found that it could. Could life be even more than what i experience now? Maybe. But I’ve already found a more, a more that is sufficient. And maybe you’d say the same, and if so, then alright. But also you’re limiting yourself. You’re assuming that you have to be athiest all your life, which you’re pretty firm in that and pretty against Christianity so that’ll probably be the case, but I’m not saying you CAN’T be joyful, I’m saying you can’t be joyful as you are now. But you’re assuming that you can never be religious no matter what, but you could. You don’t have to be, but you could. You could choose to accept Christ and that can change, but that’s your decision, and nobody should ever force that on you (so just so you know, I’m not forcing that on you before you accuse me of that). So if you want to believe that you are living the best possible life you could ever live you’re welcome to, but just like you told me, just because you believe in something doesn’t make it true. And I’m sorry you perceive all this as rude or me being rude, and I’m sorry if it has come across that way, but it’d be more rude for me to just sit idly by and not share with you what I’ve found to be true.
@@samboger25 You are saying I don't have joy. You just said it. Multiple times. If there's no joy in life, then of what value is your life to you? If all your life is filled with sadness, monotony, or loneliness, life isn't really worth much is it? The value of life is determined by what you perceive your life to be. My life is pretty damn great, so I think it has a high value. Also, I don't need reason to be kind to people, to care for people, to love people. I love and I care and I feel happiness precisely because I cherish that this is our only time of experiencing life. Why not be kind and help others have a fantastic existence while we have it? I grew up in a somewhat religious household. I was religious. So I've lived as both as well. I've noticed no noticeable difference in my personal happiness level. Perhaps I am even more happy because I don't have that pressure and anxiety to explain every mystery or question about existence and life. I now just accept that humans can't understand it all. I didn't assume I have to be atheist. I actually said the contrary. I said I am entirely open to religion, but I need proof first. I have seen no proof, so why would I believe in it? You are the perfect example of a religious person that atheists and agnostics are frustrated by. You may have good intentions, but you are trying to convert us and make it seem like your life is so much better (when really, neither of us actually know. It's entirely possible that I am living a much better life than you, or vice versa). I don't need religion- I don't see how God exists, and I don't need an afterlife for comfort, a moral outline to be a good person, etc. Christians like you act holier than thou about your existence and can't just accept that people of other religions (or no religion) can be just as fulfilled as you. I would never tell you that your life isn't joyful or missing something. I don't know you or your life. But you feel totally comfortable being super rude and presuming my life is missing something. It's not.
@@samboger25 Also, no. It would not be more rude to just be quiet and accept that others have different ways of living that work for them and make them happy. It's much more rude to assume your religion makes your life more joyful and fulfilled than someone else.
Great reaction, bro. I really like Black Star and I'm not a fan of Sulk, but I understand your point. I never understood why they put Sulk in the album, having so many other stronger tracks from the My Iron Lung ep, like The Trickster. Btw, I'm sure Muse really liked The Trickster, cause it was almost a blueprint for their first releases.
Great reaction. I agree BlackStar/Sulk are a bit of a step down, but probably suffer most from being sandwiched between other stellar tracks on the Bends. The leap Radiohead made from Pablo Honey to the Bends is astounding, arguably even more than from Bends to OK. Some bands hit with their 1st album, and the 2nd album is a weak version of the debut. Great bands get better on their 2nd albums.
I honestly don't think sulk is that bad or boring of a song. Sure it's far from the best of their work but it's a decent song imo. It should get a lil more recognition

The singer tends to use his voice as another instrument with Radiohead you need to forget about trying to listen to the lyrics and just roll witth the emotion of the entire composition it can be very overpowering at times they might be the best at that than anyone.

This was great man! Can’t wait for the in rainbows reaction cause ik Nude will make you tear up.
Nude and Reckoner both make me feel like I am going to cry but they do not make me sad at all.
@@jameshannagan7830 Oh man the oknotok version of nude makes me sob but the album version just makes me appreciate the beautiful layers.
for some reason seeing the smiley ball gives me a euphoric feeling I've never felt before
So I continue to give interesting facts for the second half of The Bends.
My iron lung was recorded at a live concert in 1994, except they later re recorded the vocals
Astoria 1994, my fav Radiohead concert ever.
I felt the same about Black Star, but after a while it became one of my favorite songs by them
Sulk on the other hand didn’t grow on me for some reason, even though they do kind of sound similar.
Thank you so much❤️
Love these Radiohead reviews! I wanna watch every single album right now!!
God I'm looking forward to having another excuse to listen to OK Computer.
Also I just got really into Ween, and I know you're probably not releasing part 2 of Quebec, but I hope you liked it!!
Nice pfp bro
Black Star is so underrated i love that song
And sulk
Is so overrated, nothing special about that song. Black Star and Sulk the worst on the album.
As a die hard Radiohead fan im gonna say that i despise sulk and black star, i think they were just thrown in to fill out the run time
Black Star is my favorite song in recent years, not just by Radiohead but by any band/artist. I don't expect others to feel the same as I have no issue admitting it doesn't sound particularly "special", but the lyrics hit me like a truck. If I sit down and think about them rather than just mindlessly sing along I just want to cry. The song just perfectly resonates with me at this stage in my life.
@@oddbjorn1696 For sure, black star is an amazing song. I love it
I love watching you enjoy music. It's so satisfying.
My iron lung was one of the first Radiohead songs I learned to play on guitar and my god it’s a fun one to play because if you play sloppy and loud it just adds to it
I love how I'm a huge Radiohead fan but brad tells me things about Radiohead I never knew I love this
Why were the bleeps on the yawning so damn funny 😂😂
Great video, hadn't listened to this album in a while, but this reminded me how awesome The Bends is
dude sick fuckin backgrounds captured the vibes of the songs really well 👍
I love this, considering Radiohead is my #1 band. And I appreciate you taking time to bleep out the yawning....... The yawns make it so hard to listen to some of your reviews, but the bleeps help a little. I work 12 hour days, sometimes 12 days in a row, so I understand the struggle.😆
This is like watching Brad Pitt's character from 12 Monkeys do reactions to music, so awesome. Liked & subscribed, need more.
I never used to care for black star when I first heard it, but I've been replaying it a lot recently, its really grown on me
The way brad described the last song is how i feel about every weezer song
He never once said "fucking shit"
@@voodoochile333 as a devoted Weezer fan I wholeheartedly agree
Can't wait to see his reaction to the greatest song in existence- Airbag
Dear Brad,
STOP READING THE GENIUS MEANINGS OF SONGS!!! Come up with your own, you will enjoy the tracks way more.
12:25 It launched the co-op with Nigel Goodrich, so that's good though...
My thoughts exactly and I can’t wait for the next Radiohead ones!!
Street Spirit has those lovely subtle strings in it that suggest OK Computer. Especially when they hit the minor 6th note even though the song itself is on the 3rd major (start of 2nd half of chorus). Taste of what's to come right there.
Brad it was cool to watch you edit this on twitch- yours truly, BossBabyHappyMeal 🙏
25:40 Great review! How about doing the Ok Computer bonus 2017 disc; OKNOTOK too? Those songs are almost as good as The Bends
had forgotten about his album, will go listen to it now, I have it on vinyl, it takes me back to when I was in my early 20's, free from the heavy negative influx of the office environments.
Yo I was just thinking when is he going to post the second part
same
me too
Thank you for part to.. I f#%£ing love this record.
I really like the melody of Black star. It's definitely one of those songs that grow on you over time. It just has this certain vibe that resonates with you
Bulletproof is a top 10 radiohead song for me.
Can't wait for you to analyze the lyrics on Kid A
yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon (x4)
Just finished the first part, and it was really good. Your blend of humor and serious reaction is great. And the fact you love this album as much as me, if not more, is amazing. Totally sticking around here
Can't wait to see your reaction to Amnesiac
can’t wait till he gets to In Rainbows
in rainbows top 2 radiohead
I like how now Even with songs that You don't like that much (I.E Black Star) you articulate your reasons and you don't shit on them. That Songs for the Deaf reaction still hurts.... I still have hope for a Like Clockwork reaction tho.
But hey, at least the album did click with him, and he ended up giving it a 9.5/10 on AOTY.
Yeah, ...Like Clockwork would be pretty neat (tho I'd personally be more excited for self-titled, Rated R and Era Vulgaris).
Woah woah woah you can’t just drop that Like Clockwork reference without giving us the reaction...
You should totally react to the original three Mr Bungle albums. It’s definitly an interesting listen lol
The funny thing about Black Star is that it was the first radiohead track ever produced by Nigel Godrich. The song is not so great but i guess the inclusion on the tracklist is all about their meeting.
yes love the radiohead. cant wait for him to get into their best albums..... ok computer, kid a, rainbows, moon shaped pool
The lyrics "if you're frightened/you can be frightened" in Iron Lung are about how casual fans want songs that are safe and catchy and Thom is saying nah f that we're gonna push you out of your comfort zone.
Another great video Brad, can’t wait for OK computer now🙌
The songs Black Star and Sulk feel very of the time, esque of britpop groups Oasis or Suede.
They are two of my favorites as well. I’m shocked at all the hate for them on here! (though tbf there are a lot of people saying they love black star)
Fun fact My Iron Lung was the first single from this album they out, so the first thing Creep fans would have heard from their upcoming album was Radiohead slagging off their only big hit
yoooo i’ve been waiting for this video
I love this album so much, I think it hits me more than any other Radiohead album.
YEEES street spirit appreciation club
my all time favorite song
My Iron Lung was recorded live, literally it’s on DVD (Live At The Astoria). The only thing they overdubbed were vocals. You gotta check out the albums worth of b-sides - killer cars, banana co, the trickster, punch drunk love sick sing along, maquiladora.....talk show host but not the single version, the Romeo and Juliet OST mix.
Yeeee
Ahh Just. One of my favorites by them.
my first two records were the bends and quebec and u reviewed them both in a week :)
Great reaction, bro. I really like Black Star and I'm not a fan of Sulk, but I understand your point. I never understood why they put Sulk in the album, having so many other stronger tracks from the My Iron Lung ep, like The Trickster. Btw, I'm sure Muse really liked The Trickster, cause it was almost a blueprint for their first releases.
the bends is a perfect album, even the tracks people dislike more like Black Star and Sulk are so fantastic
Great bands get better on their 2nd albums.
black star is not a step down whatsoever
I honestly don't think sulk is that bad or boring of a song. Sure it's far from the best of their work but it's a decent song imo. It should get a lil more recognition
Just started off as a bet between thom snd Johnny on how many chords they could fit into a song
brad you need to do no phun intended, i know i sound like a stan but i feel like you'll actually have covered everything they have to offer after you finish that. I understand if you dont want to but it would be a fun vid :)
I have a hard time getting into these guys just cause I can almost never hear what the singer is saying
If I had to describe these guys to anyone I'd say "Mumble rock"
Thanks for helping me understand what it's about though. Gonna give this another listen now.
The singer tends to use his voice as another instrument with Radiohead you need to forget about trying to listen to the lyrics and just roll witth the emotion of the entire composition it can be very overpowering at times they might be the best at that than anyone.
Just is the song that got me into Radiohead. Spoke to me when it came on RAGE very late at night. The video is extremely depressing 😭. Well worth a watch. Love RH but never listened to Pablo Honey, Creep is the only song I know from it. The Bends and In Rainbows are my favorites! Actually really enjoyed your thoughts on this album, cheers.
