Great work. But how do you accurately cut planks at the bow to achieve that stepped look?

What glue do you use for deck planking. I see contact cement is often recommended but as you don't use full length planks I feel that would be a bit difficult.

For Deck Planks I use Wood Glue in general . Only the first Plank in the Center , from where we go left and right , I fix with CA Glue to speed up the Process , because you have to press the following Plank toward the Center Plank . I never use Contact Glue , because I find that too messy .

Hey man, as a brand new ship model builder, I have never built a ship model, but I have made my own solid hull ships from scratch. There is a kit I want from amazon and I am 15 years old, watching this stuff looks complex and sort of scary... I am looking at the model shipways rattlesnake or even the syren, which one would you recommend and should I ask for it for Christmas?

Hey Ibrahim, don't be scared , if you follow the Instruction for your first Model Ship, you will be fine. What I did in this Tips & Tricks Video is to show possibilities how to improve your Deckplanking, what does not mean that you have to follow my Suggestions. As for your ask of Advise, I would recommend the Syren , because I think it's more suitable for a Beginner then the Rattlesnake, but I don't know your Skills !? Some Beginners have a Talent from the Start on, some have to learn those Skills Step by Step. So I always recommend a not so expensive Kit with a simple shaped Hull for a Beginner. Hope that helps . Greetings John

Davaoshipmodeller Davaoshipmodeller thanks man! I will look more into it, the rattle snake cost a little less then the Syren, but thanks for reassuring me man! Take care.

Will the pencil markings get rubbed off, or run when you apply the varnish?

Hello Justsayin, in my Experience the Pencil markings get not rubbed off if you cover it with Clear coat !

I’ve been looking at alternatives to varnish. My thoughts are that varnish is the worst finish you could put on any wood. As it over darkens over time and must be removed and the deck resealed . Think about all the grand masters who sealed their paintings with varnish only to have the colors fade to a dark brown.

You might be right with your Comment. I personal do not like a Varnished Model but if I do so it's mostly the Requirement of the Client. I do prefer Sanding Sealer ( or Laquer Sealer ) that gives a very light Sheen to the Model and close the Pores of the Wood. You should try it .
