  • Dewey's bobcat dogs are a mix of Foxhound(Running Walker or Trigg); Tree dog (the Coonhound breeds like Treeing Walker), and cur dog, including Leopard Cur and a Stephens Cur back a ways. Some of them look like perfect Redbone coonhounds, yet, I don't think he actually has any redbone blood.
Dewey Walton is not only a gifted Bobcat Hunter and hound trainer, but he is gifted as a woodsman to a level that is rarely seen. The Video opens with a photo and reading from the book "Bobcat Dog".
Dewey has broken his hip, his back twice, and one eye shot out by shotgun lead. And with one eye he still sees animal sign that most of us would not know existed. And he still anticipates and perceives wild animal and hound behavior in ways that seem uncanny at times.
In his younger years he hunted bobcats in many places where roads did not go. He walked his hounds into these places and tried to stay in the race as much as possible. I witnessed this as a young man. This and several other things he taught me opened up my ability to question the way things are always done. I had never seen another hunter stay with the dogs on a bobcat hunt. I would have laughed at anyone who asked me if I could do that. I just assumed it was impossible because everyone else acted like it was. (And yes, in some places it is impossible to do, even for a young man).
We only hunted together a couple days that I can remember, but they were a couple of the most influential days I ever spent in the woods. I can still see him leaning down pointing to a leaf, saying "see that"? It Looked like a leaf to me. To him it looked like where a bobcat had stepped. He forced me to look harder until I could see the faint line of the outside edge of a toe imprint in the moist dirt beside the leaf. He can still do that stuff to me forty years later with one eye. Don’t miss the exchange between Dewey and the matriarch of his whole pack: Rose. That conversation is priceless. I can’t print what Rose actually said to him.
There are many things for a hunter to learn from this video if one pays attention. Blessings. David
