I actually owned some amiibo before the Switch was released, basically when I had my Wii U and there was a series of NES game demos I could try out. Of course, I did use some of 'em on Mario Odyssey to unlock some costumes.
Psst, my favorite amiibo is the Waluigi amiibo.
i only have 7 amiibo, mostly BOTW. That freaking Guardian amiibo took FOREVER to find in store. because it was so large, stores would only get 2 or 3 of them at a time, selling out quickly.

Joseph Leatherbarrow as someone who collects ill try to explain (god I sound like a cocky asshole I’m so sorry). Basically if something is near impossible to get it will cause people to want them but eventually they will stop caring. If there is too much of a product people wont care because they’ll say hey! I can just get this another time. There’s a happy medium that makes it possible to get the amiibo but still motivate u to get it before it’s gone.

I remember when Amiibos were first released. I was shopping at Target one night and came across some of wave 1 and was like "WOAH they've got Samus in this lineup?!? That's awesome! And holy crap it's Wii Fit Trainer! Oh man I may have to start buying these. However I only had enough money for 1 figure so I purchased Samus, thinking I could get Wii Fit Trainer at a later date. Ever since then I've never seen another Wii Fit Trainer Amiibo in stores and have wished I could go back in time and change my decision that night.
At least I was able to get a Japan import.

i suffer from small town syndrome... Most places that had stock on amiibos havent had them in over several months, most places i go dont have any at all anymore

I can't believe there's no amiibo in any stores now. Aside from random releases, such as Detective Pikachu. I miss seeing those fully stocked amiibo shelves in stores. But none of them should have ever been store exclusives. That caused it to be hell on earth to get some of them. And the exclusive crap still continues, with the Dark Souls amiibo being Gamestop exclusive (which I recently preordered).
When I go to Gamestop the only ones I really see are Legend Of Zelda ones. (oh and Goomba and Koopa)

Collecting is only fun if you need to do a bit of hunting. The thrill of walking into a retro game store not knowing what you’ll find is amazing. And when you actually find something you wanted is even better

I always laugh at people saying which figures were the rarest of a wave because they aren't very rare anymore. For example, I got all 3 of the rare wave 2 amiibos for Christmas, along with Gold Mario.

I remember when I bought my Samus amiibo on amazon for $12. I checked back a couple months later and saw her price was jacked up to $80, I felt like I got very lucky.

I bought a Samus from best buy and I just thought oh Samus looks cool and then a year later I was confused why it was for $20.
I saw a 3 samus versions (dark zero suit and regular) and they were all pretty okay in price... bayonetta however.. 😵
It's interesting watching these fluctuate in price. The Samus amiibo was about $15 a couple months ago. Pretty standard.

Amiibos are definitely the worst "toys to life" things but amiibos are just cool collectibles that just happen to do something in your games. I would've bought some of mine even if they didn't do anything in game
They actually do something like the splatoon 1 & 2 lol
I actually think they're the coolest, because if you have one of the three current nintendo systems and a few first party titles that support amiibo, you can just get an amiibo regardless of which one and chances are, at least one of your games are gonna be compatible. Also, these are the highest quality figures out of the bunch, followed by Infinity.

Jonathan Williams He's saying that Smash Bros. did Amiibos right. Getting an amiibo should allow interaction and leveling up certain characters and not act as DLC.
Balance. There’s a happy middle ground between these things that Nintendo seems to have a problem hitting. Too few, and no one can find them, too many and stores never restock waves because they’re overstocked with the last wave. In game functionality, if it’s a complete afterthought then there’s no reason to have it at all, and if its entire chunks of in game content then it becomes a completion wall where you just cannot access the full game unless you bought the amiibo, which is the same problem as at launch dlc (locking content you technically own behind a paywall) not to mention it becomes more of a problem as the game gets older and the amiibo harder to find
Indeed. Collectables are about maintaining a careful balance of production and demand. That the figures are rare and therefore difficult to find but not so rare that they are impossible to find.
Having collectables is incredibly profitable but you maintaining that balance is not an easy feat.

The funniest memory I have involving amiibo is when my friend brought all of her Splatoon amiibos in a paper bag to school because we were having a Nintendo Club meeting and she was offering to let us borrow them to get the costumes in splatoon 2, so imagine us all crowding around in a circle as she tapped in amiibos one after the other

Theres one thing most people forget to mention when talking about or criticizing amiibo, is that a lot of people might just collect them due to the fact that fan of the less well known nintendo franchises finally have figures of them im not a fan of these games and/or played them but who knew that fire emblem earthbound/mother or kid icarus would get figures (with out paying stupid amounts of money for some rare inport) he'll I'm glad that there's some cool looking pikmin figures personally, but hey that's just what I think, so tell me what you guys think?

Scott Radcliffe Finally someone said this. I like Metroid, F Zero, Star fox, Kid Icarus Uprising, and classic Nintendo characters like ROB, Game and Watch. But these amiibos are the only way to get them (except for Metroid and Star Fox cause thanks to jacks pacific for their world of nintendo Samus figures). For now I'll just get ones that are on sale on specific ones.
Amiibo has no respect towards lesser known Nintendo franchises and Pokemon. Amiibo is kinda lazy and yet kids love Amiibo but kids don't like Pokemon these days. Blame kids for loving nothing but repeats like Call Of Duty. Good thing Nintendo Switch will support Amiibo and market towards gamers.

I wish. Where I live all major retailers have basically stopped carrying amiibo in store and the GameStops close by have yarn Yoshis but can’t stock Smash amiibo releases in the last year.

When this video came out there was a copy of Lego Dimensions rotting in the shelf of my local Ross. 2 years later and that copy is still on the damn shelf. says a lot about Lego Dimensions.
The moment you mention the west coast strike I had a flashback of my case. I'm in Mexico, so game suppliers are rather limited but I remember preordering my Smash Rosalina Amiibo on a store called "gameplanet". I had my preorder ready and waiting, they had set up a date but it just passed, no advice. It happen like 4 or 5 times, I remember checking the Rosalina product page on their site, as it had a "user comment" section and it was an odd way to keep myself updated. They mentioned the West coast strike as being the main reason on why they weren't shipping it.
One day without really notice, they cancelled my preorder and turned my money into store money, I checked the page and people where saying that the products where already on store and they where selling preorders to people who didn't preorder. I called my store ASAP and asked them about it: they had MY rosalina and asked them to stay put. Went rushing and payed with my "store money", I am now a happy owner of the Smash Rosalina amiibo, which then proceeded to get resold at ridiculous prices and hoarded by some jerk, but that's another story.
Amiibo in general may be easier to find, but I'm still waiting on that restock of Skyward Sword Link. I refuse to pay $80 on Amazon for one.
Best Buy just had a restock of MM Link last week, so I’m hopeful TP and SS will get restocks soon, though I’m not holding my breath over SS because seriously, fuck Amazon’s exclusives that they sometimes make Prime exclusive so it’s more fair to people that want them (aka. just to piss everyone off)
I still need skyward sword and twilight princess link for my zelda amiibo collection, but I can't find either of them anywhere without spending wads of cash for it.
Mark Aaronson I believe Play Asia has TP Link (import, though) for around $21 usd after shipping for another day or so. I’ve also seen SS Link fairly cheap on Amazon recently, but it’s also imports.
Don't blame Amazon. Blame Nintendo. They're the ones who love doing this exclusive shit, just to get cut a check.

They should make a game where you can play as any character you want after scanning your Amiibo to the Joy Con, I don't know if the gameplay be a Skylanders-esque action game or an 8-bit platformer where characters go through levels from various games, either way I'll definitely buy it.
I would love to see a Skylanders-esque game with basically every Nintendo character. Imagine seeing them all interact.
There was already a game similar to the second suggestion it was a puzzle game with platforming elements where you'd guide your amiibo through different levels with each character having a different ability like mario could wall jump and peach could float ect

Also the Botw wave 2 series I heard was very good too with Revali, Daruk, Mipha, and Urbosa. A lot of people played the expansion for Botw (of course I didn't play it because I didn't have the time or money).
