World Map making was my dream as a kid. I used to draw all sorts of Mario worlds back then.
Same here! Don’t remember if I said this in the video but I have notebooks full of world maps I drew as a kid.
The 3D Land "map" was as simple as it could get, but I did find it nice that I could actually recognise the level itself from the world map, which is not as easy in the 2D Marios, where you usually only know what the level theme will be (grass, water, etc.). Then 3D World made this pretty cool world map that wasn't just straight lines like in 3D Land, and apart from that you could actually walk freely. But I have to admit the walking around got old pretty quickly, as there weren't too many secrets on the map, and the walking and (barely faster) running speed is kinda slow and becomes a little inefficient because of that.
If you're interested in a game that plays like a Nintendo platformer and has one of my personal favorite world maps ever, check out "Yooka Laylee and the impossible lair" (not to be confused with the first 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee game). I'm sure you're already aware that a large portion of the original DKC team worked on it.
I have played a bit of this game before! I agree that it has an amazing world map. It’s a shame I forgot to mention it because it is quite unique and stuffed full of content.
Not only one this one of THE best videos I've seen in a GOOD while, (Not to mention the effort you put in) but I'm glad that I wasn't the only one to notice the abrupt transitions between New Super Mario Bros. U's worlds. Look at North Africa. The Sahara Desert doesn't just suddenly end when the rainforests south of the desert begin. There is a region in between the two known as the Sahel. A Grassland region peppered with some trees here and there. A perfect example of a natural transition!
Levels that take place within a transitional landscape between grassland and desert would be absolutely amazing in a Mario game!

Right! I believe I chose not to mention this one because NSMBU’s example was basically just the same thing but better because of the switch mechanic and star coin.

If you want an idea for that possible future video about world maps outside of Nintendo, I would highly recommend you talk about Cuphead's. It's thematically beautiful, has plenty of people to talk to/interact with, and there's secrets to be found too!
Fun easter egg: The music track I use at the end of the video (while mentioning the existence of world maps outside Nintendo games) is Inkwell Hell, the final area of Cuphead’s world map!

9:41 Huh? Diddy Kong Racing? I didn't play this game, but I wouldn't expect a hub world in a racing game. It's not in Mario Kart either.
I totally agree with you thinking DKC3s World Map is the best! :D But why did you dedicate your whole life to world maps?

Taking the easy way out: Throwing my Switch away and using another one instead of getting up and going to charge the one I was using
