I don’t think it’s much better now. Apparently Ventura is a training ship so you either end up with inexperienced staff or staff who are moving on to other ships. The ship itself is lovely and you’ll have a good time. Just don’t buy the drinks package unless you’re a heaving 12 drinks a day person

After doing many Airtours Sun Cruises and Thomson (now Marella) I decided to go P&O to the Caribbean on Oceana & Arcadia (when brand new). I found the service slow and food no better than to more budget type cruises. Although the P&O vessels were shiny and new their cabins or food were no better. I'm still a Marella regular cruiser with good food and all inclusive drinks. It makes budgeting much easier and the Marella cruises are very relaxed. Roll on June until my next one. Good video again.

    Hi Jamie,
I just got back from an MSC virtuosa cruise visiting the Northern Pearl - my dad is ex merchant navy and my mum passed away in January this year so my sister and I though it would be good to book a cruise for him and I to visit Rotterdam, where he was during his merchant navy days in the 60's. So we we're both very excited first time cruise goers.
Was absolutely blown away by the amount of staff , the amazing ship , the friendliest staff ever and the view's from the balcony. So days 1-4 were lovely. The only gripe I had was the temperature of the hot food at meal times. I only had hot food once , pizza , because I waited until it came out fresh.
Day four we visited Zeebrugge, made our way to Bruges - we had a nice traditional small breakfast of ham and egg.
Then dad was ill ( not there food)
He proceeded to projectile vomit mainly in the loo.
I managed to get him back to the ship where the next three days he was ill , I caught it , Rotterdam came and went, we couldn't leave our cabin. The Thursday the captain said we've got a stormy crossing back to Southampton...
Then Friday we couldn't wait to get home , Saturday dad tested positive for covid.....
Thankfully we have a sense of humour and dad said. At 78 he loved the adventure...
Question is can we claim back on our insurance for sickness ( didn't see the ship doctor) and missing our holiday???

Your usual informative video. I was sorry to hear your Marco Polo experience. CMV was my favourite when they existed! My own favourite was Magellen, not too big, huge cabin, friendly crew, always delicious food. I was booked on Columbus but then Covid struck. And, of course, CMV were no more. The only time I have had to send a meal back was on Cunard Queen Victoria! One expected better! The waiter was devastated when the replacement was also just as bad (over done tuna - like shoe leather) and again sent back. My alternative choice was better and he was relieved to have finally found me something acceptable. Watching all your videos to help me decide who to go with next. Keep up the good work 👏

Hello Jamie. Sorry!!!! Only just seen your response to my comment. Where does the time go? In answer to your question: due to your very positive and informative reviews, my daughter, Michaela, has now booked us on Borealis next May. I much prefer smaller cruise ships, the mere thought of trying to negotiate round one of the new monsters out there - shudder. I know they look spectacular but not my cup of tea. By the way, Michaela is a cruise agent (handy, you say?) and has just returned from a promotional trip on QM2. She mentioned that the food had not improved and it was all rather not what it used to be. My son and his wife were on Ventura earlier this year. Bon voyage and keep up the good work 👏

We had a soiled toilet on embarkation so complained.
We were compensated with a bottle of champagne from housekeeping, a bottle of wine from guest services and an invitation to attend the cruise into Dubrovnik on the helipad.
We also never had to wait for a table at dinner despite pagers being given out to others. By the second evening we were just waved in on sight with a “good evening gentlemen you know where your table is”
We were in an inside cabin too.

We sailed with CMV six times, five times on Magellan and Columbus - both nice ships. The ships were old but the food and service were excellent. We never got to do the Marco Polo because it was only sailing from Bristol. We did a one night cruise on Astoria from Poole to Portsmouth. In order to board the ship at Poole we found ourselves faced not with a gangway but an actual ladder right up to deck 5 and this was a cruise line that catered mainly for over 60s. My husband is disabled and had to be pulled and pushed up the ladder by two crew members, one in front of him and one behind and I had to climb it myself holding two small suitcases and a suit carrier. The food was good and the sea was calm but that is the best thing I can say for that ship. Apart from the public areas it didn't look like it had been touched since 1948. We cruised on Ventura once and we thought it was fine. We sailed on Iona two years ago which is a lovely ship and we are on it again later this year and are booked on Arvia and Iona next year. Our favourite cruise line is Cunard though.

Nobody tried to sell me the drink package, the staff was lovely, and the food was great. We got fresh cutlery at dinner. It might make a difference from where the ship sails and the crew at the time. We preferred Britannia to Ventura - we sailed on them a few months apart but that was 6 years ago. Found queuing a bit slow on Ventura and the dining experience was better on Britannia, Ventura seemed very cramped in comparison. Not been on Celebrity but sailed on Marco Polo. Marco polo was maybe 8 years ago and I must admit we didnt have any issues other than crossing the Bay of Biscay! After battling our way to Tilbury in monsoon conditions, the ship, the Ambience, did not sail due to problems with the lifeboats and we all had to get off the following day. We got a full refund. Was not impressed with either ship or food. We did Arvia in June, we really enjoyed it but found it was not as child friendly as it could ahve been. The kids club supervisor was miserable my daughter reffered to her as Miss Trunchbull she made me laugh as she clearly wanted another job on the ship and this was the only option available.. The period between 9pm (or 9.30 can't remember I had cocktails most of the time) & 11pm has no snacks which had us going back to the cabin then marching up to the late night buffet in our PJs a couple of times , it did look really odd on formal night but sometimes its good to make an impression. Other than that it was a really great cruise and we have planned another P&O cruise for mid March and we have also worked out how to fix those problems for Iona. We will eat later and leave the kids with the grandparents so it should be perfect :)

All three were so disappointing , I hope you do try Celebrity again, perhaps an edge class. I wonder if P&O , staff their new ships more generously , having cruised with them on Britannia and Iona last year, they did not seem very short staffed. Never waited longer that 5 minutes in MDR for any meal. Cabin staff asked how many cabins they serviced each day, I was told 14-16 but they then had another job in the evening, staffing bars. There was no lifeguard at the pool and the waters got very choppy which made the water in the pool incredibly choppy and was throwing people from side to side. Marco Polo was our worst cruise. Food was good, but cabin awful. Cheap foam mattress, very noisy, broken heating and shower.
Next Queen Victoria. Worst quality main theatre shows and shockingly bad service at the afternoon tea.
Finally Iona. 75% full but felt rammed. Large numbers of out of control kids, main theatre shows repeated throughout the week, paper thin cabin walls. Biggest puzzle was finding people not wanting to socialise in MDR. A few times after waiting for others to join us at a shared table we were moved to a two person table as nobody wanted to share.

I believe you where Ventura is concerned ( haven’t been on the other two 😂) but we did the same cruise October 21 and we had no hot water . I had to keep asking to get anyone to look at it and eventually two engineers came and had a look . They said they’d fixed the problem but they hadn’t . I had to ask several times to get the house keeping manager to come to the cabin where he tried to convince me the water was hot …. It really wasn’t you had to have it on full to get anything like a warm shower and the sink wasn’t even warm . It was tweaked again and it was slightly warmer . They did in the end offer to move us but it took endless amounts of complaining . We have been cruising for around 17 years this is the first time we’ve ever complained on any ship . They sent us a bottle of wine as a good will gesture but having to argue that water isn’t actually hot was mind blowing . Other than that though our cruise was fine it was at reduced capacity though and it was really chilly in some areas we found . We’ve been on Iona and Arvia since and both were much better .

Okay to start with I've cruised off and on for nearly 51yrs now.
I can only talk about P&O as it's the only cruise company I have ever sailed on and and worked aboard.
I'd say that the change started around 10yrs ago when cruise lines started to reduce fares in order to fill ships to capacity.
The introduction of newer ships and requirements of teaching establishment's for P&O crews based in Goa in India I think became an issue. I've been told that the centre for training no longer exists.
The recent global pandemic slaughtered the cruise industry and consequently resulted in many collapsing.
Now up to date. In January this year I boarded Iona which in my humble opinion is a beautiful ship and I personally couldn't fault it, however I had a balcony cabin mid-ships 12nts and only paid £699.
I paid more for cabins 10+yrs ago so that standards and expectations are not going to be met.
I personally would love the old days of cruising to return but times, ships and people have changed and expectations.
    Happy cruising everyone 😁

After 30 cruises with P&O this Ventura cruise was our worst. Since, we have sailed Iona and currently on Arvia and both experiences have been fabulous and as good as what we used to experience with minimal waits and excellent service: for me, the Ventura cruise was solely about not having enough crew and yes o agree, some training needs im some areas. Thanks for your comments.

I actually can't remember on our recent booking form if there was a section for allergies, some thing they should have if not. My first cruise was a 2 weeker on p&o uganda for a school trip, they converted it from a cargo ship, to a 2 class vessel. then to a schools education cruises, dorms of 20 per cabin shared toilets crap food, 3 tier bunks, dorms were in the old cargo hold!!! 900 traumatized school kids.

I was on the same Ventura cruise as mentioned… I had booked adjoining cabins, only to find they had us on different sides of the ship. They said they were full and could not change it….that was a LIE….as I had booked the cabins next to one another so I could babysit easily it meant I had to have a cot in my cabin as well now and that meant no hanging space, so all my clothes were under the bed, and I ended up with the little one staying overnight for a lot of the cruise..
I found the customer service personnel were totally dismissive, I even had one tell me they did not supply travel cots onboard when we had one already, but on the other side of the ship…in the end my cabin steward resolved it.
It was a very disappointing cruise and I have completed 70/80 cruises….
I have been back on the Ventura since and had a nice enough time. No waiting for service in any area but still finding customer service personnel arrogant and dismissive….such a shame, as they are front of house and should be superb.

Have just booked 2 weeks in the Med on Arvia for our next trip (our first post-Covid trip) and have been watching your vlogs from your recent cruise- so glad to see that Iona and Arvia seem to have really good service and be top notch in terms of organisation and generally can’t wait to get back on board 😊

We had the very same experience on a 5 day Celebrity Infinity cruise in 2019. Pushy selling, disorganised dining room and difficulty ordering GF breakfast items. We had an inside room and the beds were very uncomfortable. Almost cot like. The worst was our cabin steward. She complained about being unhappy in her job and that she couldn't wait to go home. Also on disembarkation day she asked if it was alright to change the bed and get it ready for the next guests while we were at breakfast. She would then come back to clean the bathroom after we made our last pit stop to brush teeth etc before we left the ship! All I can say is yuck! Not the service we were expecting for sure! We did enjoy our ports and dinner table mates. That is what helped enjoy our time on board.
