Is Ratchet and Clank Deadlocked Still Good?

This is it, the final step on our journey with the Lombax (For now). Let's take a look at this 2005 title and find out how good it is in 2023.

I miss this kind of Ratchet title. The cynical take on corporate villains, a Ratchet that actually finds himself temporarily enjoying a life as an illegal gladiator, and witty characters. This is what Ratchet & Clank should have stayed as instead of the pretentious "chosen one" whimsical, magical nonsense that came in the later titles.

Do you even know *why* Insomniac shifted direction? But sure maybe Insomniac should've abandoned the series after the PS2 era just like ND did Jak because they weren't confident in what they wanted to change regardless of the execution.

@@mr.marvin They didn't have two studios until 2009 though and even then they were consistently crunching. The addition of the north Carolina studio, great management and a proper remote work pipeline are the main reasons why their announcement to release ratio still hasn't been negatively affected.
If they dropped the RaC IP during the PS3 era they would've been able to put more devs on resistance and vice versa, then starting with 8th gen they were able to do multiple projects *without* one compromising the other in the slightest and with very little to no crunch to boot.

This is probably tinfoil hat level but it does seems like there's some kind of self-imposed or market-driven censorship going on in the US and I find it very evident in games. The evil corporation plot is rarer (C2077 is European), heroes are less nuanced(Ratchet got his whole personality retconned in the remake), governments are now allies and if they are not there's usually a Trump-like scapegoat (think at the plot premise difference between Left4dead and Back4Blood), controversy is avoided far more (Call of Duty "no russian" remake is laughable compared to the original). Even Kratos is tamer.
One of the only exceptions I think of is Naughty Dog, Uncharted 4 and the two TLOU don't feel like preachy, generic stories to educate teenagers.

Amazing how games from 20 years ago are far more fun to play that games today.

It's important to remember that Ratchet: Deadlocked is a spinoff.
In my opinion it's the best of the spinoff games in Ratchet and Clank.

RA has better planets/level design/exploration, more varied weapons, more platforming mechanics, better gunplay, way better traversal, decent clank sections, more variety in objectives etc.
Deadlocked has the tone, weapon customization and music but it doesn't do a great job of showcasing what the series is really about.

Ah, Deadlocked. Pure Ratchet gameplay, and nothing else. I didn't get to play this one until the god-awful PS3 port came out, but that was more funny than detrimental to the experience. The combat is still excellent, and it actually defaults to lock-strafe this time so more people know that it's the better control scheme. This is the first Ratchet game to have coop, where you can even play as Jak. Me and a friend in highschool did a playthrough like that, and it was a lot of fun.
But, while I do like it, ultimately I've put more time into other Ratchet games. It's a mixture of the lack of weapon variety, and the huge level cap. I always max out all the weapons in Ratchet games because I'm a completionist, but 100 levels? That's just exausting, and it puts me off NG+ runs, which is half the fun of these game. Still, a great game, and definitely the best Ratchet to boot up when you just want to blow $%?# up.

In terms of sheer gameplay, this is my favorite so far but weapon variety is a hard sticking point. Co-op for a title like this sounds like a blast, and definitely something I would’ve enjoyed as a kid.
