    Hello, What could be a reason why a library is not automatically discovered, if I add it manually, where can I locate the data that ITDT asks me for?

    Thanks matthewr21 for this tip:
    "Try this: Set all the DIP switches on the bottom of the drive to OFF, connect a computer to the drive's RS-422 library interface connector with an RS-232 to RS-422/RS-485 adapter, set the serial port on your computer to 38400bps, one stop bit, no parity, 8 bits per byte, and then send the following sequence of bytes: 02 00 36 AC 01 00 00 00 01 FF F2 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 E6 03 "

    I didn't know that the Dell test tool worked on HP drives. They are competing companies, and you'd think (like seagate and WD) they'd refuse to work on their competitors products! Good to know :)

      It looks like you caught a mistake, we seem to have misspoken. You do use IBM ITDT for IBM/DELL tape drives and HP L&TT for HP tape drives. The exception would be for an HP LTO7 tape drive, since HP uses IBM tape drives for their LTO7.

    Hi, is it also possible to reconfigure a former library drive to single drive mode? (I got an LTO-4 IBM HH SAS drive out of an library which won't work without the serial 'ok' from the library....

      We do have the ability to convert library drives to standalone drives and vice versa. You could send the drive to us and we could do that for $75

    • @Ford_Prefect
      @Ford_Prefect 3 года назад

      @@repairmytapedrive I'd Like to, but shipping from Europe and back would cost twice as much as you get for the converting... everything added up is even more expensive than a used LTO-5 drive on ebay :-( So, if it is a 'company secret' how to do it myself, I'll accept that :-)

      @@Ford_Prefect UG yes it is propriety on how to do that. Basically is it accessing the RS232 port and issuing selected commands. This topic did perplex all of the repair facilities for a long time. Took us a long time to be able to do this. Even by telling one how to do that project it is a lot of work for a one time conversion. The library drives do have a code put on during the manufacturing process that only allows the drive to work in a library, this was standard in the LTO4s. The code is on a PROM chip not an EPROM chip which compounds the problem.
      Hope this helps, If you could find a defective LTO4 with a good board you could swap the board. You will need to follow strict ESD guidelines as well. Those LTO4s came with a V1 & V2 head the boards are not interchangeable.

      @@repairmytapedrive hmm is there any documentation about the RS232 port used or do I have to hook an oscilloscope first to gather informations about the levels used there? I think this is 'now' also more a proof of concept for myself than it will ever be a "production" tape drive, since it is not as easy as thought. Could you tell me what resides behind the rs232 interface? is it a low level data port or is there something like a system interface (like the AT command interface of a (cellular-)modem, which reacts at lleast a few characters after sendung an invalid input? I am very curious about that, because I almost found nothing about that topic in the internet, despite being searching for several hours now...

    halo, I interesting about your last statement about post B and backup failed after 3TB and 1TB failed.
    I have same problem and I dont know why it happen.
    can you explain about "can't trap can't move because the...."?

    • @repairmytapedrive
      @repairmytapedrive  2 года назад

      I think you mean the part about "Can't track up ...." The head moves up and down on a Worm gear, or elevator gear. It is sort of like a screw that spins and move the head up and down vertically. The Worm gear is part of the head assembly, so a bad worm gear equates to a bad head. It is not replaceable but sometimes we can lubricate, clean and/or adjust the gear to get it working again.

    do tape drives have a standard mounting the way desktop drives do? for example, will an autoloader drive from an ibm fit a dell or hpe chasis? do all hpe autoloader drives have the same mounting?

      Yes and no. While the form-factor is a standard 5.25" HH or FH form factor, some HH drives have strict limitations on the length of the screws that you use. This is due because longer screws can interfere with the internal mechanism movement of loading/unloading media.

    This is very informative.
    In my environment, I don't have access to log in to the server where the tape drive is installed.
    As such i can not install the tool in the server to perform the tests.
    I would like to know, if I can use the ITDT tool to remotely scan a LTO tape drive ?
    Thank you.

      We have never run into the scenario where you would want to run IDTD remotely. Looking online, I don't see any information on that either. The one thing that I can think of is that you need a 'scratch' tape to run the test on. In other words, a tape that you don't mind overwriting. When running the test, it first warns you that data will be overwritten. So you wouldn't want to overwrite any cartridges with data on them that you want to save.
