On one fateful weekend in June 2007, wrestling superstar Chris Benoit would not only take his own life but the lives of his wife Nancy Benoit (aka Woman) & their son Daniel.
Some of the wrestling legends we spoke to have traveled around the world with Chris. Outside of Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko is the closest friend of Chris Benoit. He even appeared on Vice "Dark Side of the Ring", giving a chilling account what happened in Benoit's final hours. We also spoke with Kevin Sullivan, the ex-husband of Nancy, former WCW booker & boss of Benoit.
The wrestling legends on this clip include Stevie Ray (Harlem Heat), Dean Malenko, Axl Rotten, Kurt Angle, Black Bart & Kevin Sullivan.

I strongly believe Benoit’s actions was one of the biggest reasons why WWE went back to being family friendly.
Absolutely, vince came back from the dead, anyone on performance enhancers were quickly punished, like Mr. Kennedy, and ushered in the PG era
It’s an absolute fact. Once the Benoit murder-suicide happened, the mainstream media put an extremely negative light on wrestling, especially WWE. Due to that incident and Linda McMahon wanting to run for office, WWE had to really clean up its image.

Listen, people discounting the brain damage haven't witnessed how it can change a person firsthand. My grandfather was a great guy. Right up until he got kicked in the head by a horse. After that, his personality totally changed. He became a monster. Angry all the time. Developed alcoholism. Abused his kids. Before the brain damage, he was a sweet, upstanding man. Believe me. It happens, can happen and probably DID happen to Benoit. He already had a lot of dark things he was dealing with before it caught up with him.
Definitely possible. Was in a bad car accident and had minor brain damage along with a bunch of broken bones. It did change me a bit. It’s almost like you have to work to be the better version of yourself. Sucks to hear about your grandfather. Glad you have the good memories of him. Hold on to those
Strokes can cause major personality changes too. Any injury to the brain has a significant risk of long term damage that can be hard to initially assess. I truly believe the repeated head trauma and drug abuse contributed to what happened.

I 100% agree with what Jericho said about Benoit. That Eddie's death started this, and Chris didn't know how to/wouldn't seek help for the immense grief he was dealing with. Just started cutting everything out of his life until he was alone and all he had was these dark thoughts in his head.

I think Jericho's theory is the closest. He said on Larry King it was a mix of a bunch of factors. His depression, CTE, steroids, grief caused him to snap.
The simplest answer is usually the right one. I believe a combination of losing Eddie and a few other close friends in rapid succession played a role. CTE, drinking, depression caused him to snap. He wasn't in his right mind, a person who is in their right mind doesn't hang around for a few days with the dead bodies of his wife and son.
It’s not WWE’s fault, they only found out Benoit had the brain of an 80 yr old Alzheimer’s patient after a post mortem brain scan. In addition to that, many wrestlers have said they saw Benoit behaving strange, but they never thought to go to Vince or any of the other top brass and say “Hey, Benoit is kind of acting strange, could you give him a call?” So you can’t just finger point and say WWE is to blame

That was such a crazy week when Benoit died. First Sensational Sherri died of an overdose if I remember right, then Vince did that crazy death angle and then Benoit's death. I will never forget that week.

I met Eddie at an Indy show in between his wwe days because of drug use... I was like 9 Jeff Hardy was my favorite wrestler I had his new action figure on me and that was it.. Eddie did a signing at this show and he signed everyone’s anything and took pictures... my 9 year old self walks up all nervous and star struck by Latino heat, I ask him to sign my Jeff Hardy figure he grabs it looks at me and says “hey man why don’t you have my action figure, you want me to sign Jeff’s why because he’s cool!” And I’m like uhhhhh and Eddie starts laughing and signs the figure and I proceeded to tell him I had his figure at home which I did I just bought the Jeff hardy figure on the way to that show.. he was such a sweet man I can’t see him turning away a single fan

Eddie was such a great man he was also trying to not break Kayfabe at the time he was in "Latino Heat" mode I would have loved to have met this Eddie because he was such a great guy and he loved his Fan Base I got to meet King Kong Bundy at a Comic con in Orlando Florida it was one of the best memories I have

Eddie really kept Chris sane. Chris really broke down when he didn’t have his confidant to seek guidance anymore. But, what makes me even sad, is that not only Daniel was killed, David was blackballed from literally everything. And I watched the Vice series...... David still seems like the little kid who still hasn’t fully comprehend what happened.

Watching this has shown me how professional and respectful Kevin is. If there’s anyone in the world that could’ve harbored ill feelings towards Benoit, Kevin could’ve without much room for critique. But the fact that he speaks nothing but good things about Chris’ talent and career, and supported putting the belt on him after everything, is a testament to his character.

My father had a stroke at 56.
His personality changed overnight. This stoic, responsible, jolly, thoughtful man was replaced with a resentful, bitter, helpless person who I had to get to know again.
He was still 'him', but his behaviour in any one circumstance was the opposite of what you'd came to expect of him the previous 56 years.
Trauma to the brain does horrendous things to a person. I don't know what happened, but I do know that.
One huge reason why I believe Chris Benoit should still be mentioned by the wwe and he should still be in the hall of fame, despite his actions. The brain damage was too much for him
I have seen another video that stated he argued and fought with his wife a lot because of the steroids causing him to rage and how he would break things in the home and hit her and she wanted to be away from him and raise their child on her own, because she feared for her life. It was also stated that she told him that he's going to leave him and take their son and this was on the night she was killed. So I think maybe that was what caused him to snap. But to kill your son makes no sense to me. Killing him just so that he didn't grow up knowing his father was a killer when he has two more kids from first wife that at the time were 15 and 11

Angle and Benoit matches were always one of the most funnest matches to ever watch. You could see the heart poured out in those matches so well I’m glad they had a angle to talk about him because he’s right you could definitely see the beauty of what those two had together in the square.
I think what Stevie said speaks volumes. Sometimes getting mad and letting off steam keeps huge things from happening. Possibly Chris held a lot in plus CTE making for a monumental incident

I worked in the medical field for 24 years. I honestly think the brain damage especially when you see his brain scans in other documentaries, caused this. He was gone from there. And when you factor in grief and drinking and drug use and work and martial problems it all snow balled.
Medical coverage and insurance should be given to all wrestlers.
this is all why I never felt that it was Chris that committed these horrible acts. His mind was gone and he was something else at that point.
His brain was severely damaged, but does that make humans homicidal? I think this is the only example of a damaged brain being the cause of homicidal behavior.

So it goes to show that cte can definitely mess with people a troubled past. Then getting it and using heavy drugs and alcohol can probably make you someone you don’t know. Dementia and Alzheimer’s have similar effects in the way that they aren’t the same. But cte has many different forms. And severity levels. You could be vegetable to just having mood swings and shakes and reactions are slower. But we can’t say we weren’t Chris. But I do think his finisher didn’t help considering jumping off the top rope to head but some one is not great for the brain.

I believe Nancy's sister from the Dark Side of the Ring documentary.
Chris and Nancy had been fighting off and on for a couple of years. Nancy had told her sister, Chris was abusing steroids and had rage issues and she had threatened to leave him over it.
Add the roid abuse in with pain killer addiction, loss of Eddie, and the CTE and you had a powder keg waiting to go off.
Also everyone who used the flying head butt as a finisher wound up with brain damage, bad necks and bad backs. Also damn did Chris take some nasty chair shots over the years.
At the end of the day it's a deadly combination what caused this. Brain damage on it's own can cause one to become unhinged but murdering your loved ones is still very surprising on it's own. At the maximum if it's was just the brain damage he may have turned into a wife beater but not this

15 years ago I went to a WWE event and Chris Benoit was there. I got goosebumps when his entrance music hit and he walked out. Despite what he done, I still have my memories of him

It actually gave me chills a little in the beginning when he said he was the only wrestler who he had never seen get mad. I don't care who you are, in what profession your in, whether it be wrestling or the ministry, YOU GET MAD! And someone who doesn't, or at least doesn't SHOW IT, ESPECIALLY AS A MAN, TERRIFIES ME. I used to get overly negative with the anger and even for some things that didn't really deserve my concern. That's how im going about attempting to keep positive energy around me.. But my original point was just tht I've pulled off not hardly acknowledging negativity in my personal space for such an amount of time, tht I could likely have a few friends that could say that they've never seen me angry.

She said “Well that’s how many seconds are in a day. When you let someone ruin your day, you’re just giving them more of that money that they don’t deserve”
So I don’t give people more money than they deserve anymore. If they ruin my day, I let it be for 60 seconds and that’s all they get now.
Kevin Sullivan packing a dip while interviewing and using a low ball glass as a spitter is the best thing I've seen since Zak Galifinakis on the Michael Showalter Showwalter.
Chris and Nancy had been known to have a "volatile" relationship. That means violence. More than once.
There was obviously an argument, and it got physical. After that, it was "The Perfect Storm".
The CTE, the Testosterone, anger and frustration, and things probably went too far.
After that, he probably decided it was better to all die, rather than for his son to grow up without a mother and a famous father in prison for killing your mother. He , in his emotional, possibly inebriated, and panicked state, along with the right combination of suicidal depression, made Chris think he didnt have any other choice. It's just a sad story all around.
I honestly think that if someone did an autopsy on Harley Race or Bam Bam or Dynamite Kid, they'd find CTE too. People are overselling that wellbeing bit as if it were a Wrestling promo. People are known to live with CTE... How many of them do you hear about killing their wife?... The finger prints can easily be explained, he could have been hugging Nancy, and Daniel alike. So it is awfully easy to frame Benoit because of it... The autopsy showed no alcohol in Benoit's bod disregarding the empty beer cans found as "evidence", and the Steroids + injections found in his house weren't his... the overtly testosterone present in his bod? Could have easily been something as simple as fast hair growth... or too late for a Waxing Day? The text messages between he and Nancy? Months if not almost a year apart... In order to pull off the suicide via the weight machine, in order for that to make sense it would have had to have been two LOD Wrestlers in their prime adjusting the rack of the weight which be weighing AT LEAST 200 kgs which is a feat that would prove to be a difficult task even for the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger. That too, in his prime.
Only saying that 'cause I don't think the mental state of mind had to do with all that much... He was known to have phone calls lasting until and over midnight, having conversations with the likes of Chavo Guerrero and Hardcore Holly.
Can easily imagine Benoit not being home until late midnight interacting with someone about the deceased Eddie, another unknown friend perhaps. No wonder he was taking different routes to home as it is not difficult to imagine Benoit seeking for a Therapist to deal with problems or socialising with a friend to deal with regards to the aforementioned "volatile" relationship issue between he and Nancy, and them being killed over that time period.
i.e.... It is truly not that far-fetched to think about how he could have not done so even with a differentiated mindset.
There is no evidence of any kind to support the idea that anyone except Benoit was the killer.
In fact, all the physical evidence clearly showed that there was quite the struggle between he and his Nancy. He strangled her, then his child, then committed suicide. Thats the sad end of the story.
No conspiracy, no mystery. Just the right amount of personal depression, a lifelong history of concussions, and inner turmoil.

And how did he kill himself? Carried all that weight of 200 kgs and then took a towel and then wrapped it around his neck and then get the weight back down and back up?
Dude even Arnold Schwarzenegger would have a hard time doing that. No way one person alone can accomplish such a feat. Would have to be jacked up dudes doing that in order to achieve Benoit dying.
None of the alcohol found in his body explaining the empty beer cans not to be his, the Injections and Steroids also proved not to be his, and the text messages months almost a year apart, all the recorded phone conversations sounding like a peaceful marriage and you're still having a hard time figuring out anybody could have done that EASILY and get AWAY WITH IT?

I feel sure that Benoit -- weakened emotionally by depression over Eddie and troubled by brain damage -- lost his temper during an argument with Nancy and got violent. I don't think he meant to kill her, but in a blind rage, he did... and then, killing his son and himself seemed like the only way out of the situation to his mind at the time. He probably thought it'd be too hard on his son to live with both parents dead, and he wanted to kill himself to avoid prison and disgrace... so, he made a terrible decision that seemed the most logical course to him. I'm fairly sure it all started from an impulsive accident that snowballed, not something he'd planned to do.

I do not remember how long ago it was, so I might be wrong about which son it was, but I think it was Daniel. He obviously loved that child deeply. He spent his time backstage playing with his boy and I am not sure I ever saw any two people happier.

Chris was a dear friend of mine as well since we were both selected for a specific team at the same date and both of us flown out to be in the team right out of high school way before he joined WWE. Chris and I both flown out to Colorado springs to be in the team at the time. As team mates, Chris and I became close and our wives were very close friends also. The last time I spent time with him and our wives is when Chris came to Tampa Florida to compete where we spent time together afterwards.
The murders devastated my family totally to say the least with our past relationships. I did not even realize that you made this video but I am happy you all covered it. Chris was very close to Eddie as he spoke about him often and I do feel eddys death depressed him to this level but I am upset that Chris did not reach out for help.

We were both selected for the USA National Team in the summer of 1986 however it was not untill the summer of 1987 before we flown too Colorado Springs within days apart as I had too finish high school in Miami before moving across the country too start the national team. My parents would not let me go untill high school was done. Though Chris and I competed in training against each other constantly being the same official rank and trained with much higher ranks to move up, one thing I appreciate about him is he was always very competitive even with the International and Olympic champions going out purposely challenging them, it was never the aspect of holding back from day one.
The most comical times he did was with Travis Breatee (that held 4 ranks over him and International champion from Iowa) where both of them bet to choke each other out while at a college party. But he did do similar actions with Billy Travis (3 ranks over him and national champion from Alaska) and Ed Liddie (Olympic bronze medalist who was the team captain.) Chris never cared what rank he held nor who he challenged but those who got to know him one on one, loved everything about him without question. I miss him loads and my wife does also. The tournament in Tampa was the last time I fought with him side by side and spent the week with him at the hotel in person. I am gutted that we won't see him ever again though. He should of got help and I would of drove to his house 9 hours away and picked him up while protecting his wife and children while getting him help if I just known.

i suffered sever brain damage that changed my personality and way of thinking altogether. i still have some memories of that other person and what i lost and its incredibly hard to rationalize and deal with. on top of that it hurts constantly where i have to smoke pot or take heavy depressants to slow down my brain and make it hurt less. i went to doctors and therapists and there have still been times where i was barely able to keep everything together. One day Chris Benoit died and the CTE ridden shell kept going until it too broke.

If Steroids made you kill yourself and your family why is he the one to do it? Plenty of wrestlers were on steroids during that time, allmost all of them if you go back to 80s and 90s. Powerlifters and bodybuilders would have all killed their families. I think his brain damage led to worse impulse control, mood swings, depression etc. and could be to blame. I don't think him and Nancy were in a happy relationship, he lost his best friend, he might have had a psycothic breakdown too. We will never know for sure. Steroids could have been a contributing factor among all the other things, but alone or as the main reason that is just incorrect.
It's just unfortunate he couldn't have just killed himself and not the others. He'd be remembered in a whole different way, especially if they would have still checked his brain so people could see how it was damaged.

I was stationed in Germany when this happened. I thought my buddy was joking. I watched him when I was a kid on up. When I realized he wasn't, I remember being depressed for two days. Hard to believe.
CTE + Depression + Drinking + Roid Rage created the Benoit situation. He never took time off to process his grief because wrestling was all he knew. Much like Dynamite Kid his wrestling style indirectly lead him down a path that lead to steroid use and lead him to a lot of concussions. I don't know why this always stuck with me, but when I was a kid I used to get WCW magazines from grocery stores. I remember they had articles and interviews with different wrestlers. Each week they would have one section that has common questions and one sentence answers. One question was "What is your favorite TV show?" And Chris Benoit's answer was "I don't watch TV". For some reason that direct answer made me think he was was just straight-forward, no laughs, no fun type of guy. I thought it was ironic that a guy that works on television didn't like television. I’ll never forget that when I was a little boy my parents used to take me to this annual fund raiser/picnic event (I think it was like for the kids hospital, I had cancer as a kid but beat it early and have been in remission ever since thankfully) at a big estate during the summer. And some summers they’d get a WWF (yeah I’m that old) wrestler to come to the event and hang out with the kids and just be on the grounds. I’ll never forget the two wrestlers I met. First one was Scotty Too Hotty. I remember he was really nice but I only knew the main event guys as a boy so I was like “oh your the worm guy!” And like he tried to get me a WWF Ice Cream bar from the truck they had on the grounds to win me over he was like “This one’s got The Rock on it!” lmao.
The other guy I can’t forget is Chris Benoit. I was like maybe 6 or 7 maybe 8 but he was just big and jacked and I remember being excited that it was Chris Benoit from No Mercy (the N64 game lmao). This man was so. Incredibly. Sweet to me. A big teddy bear which is crazy every interview I’ve ever seen about him is like “he was really stoic and tough”. Not that day with me. As I grew up I never forgot that and he became and remained one of my very favorite wrestlers. As a fan I was so confused and hurt when the incident happened. That guy became my motivation as young kid to get in the gym and get jacked and I always supported him . The whole thing was tragic and upsetting for everyone involved needless to say fans included. It’s so crazy I still have a little Polaroid picture he took with me (I’m looking at it like right now as I type this) that time I met him and it’s so bizarre to think about it now.
I really do wish they would’ve added an interview with Chris and Chavo. especially Chavo because he gave a lot of great insight about this. I watched a lot of videos with him about Chris and he really digs deep in a lot of them and it breaks your heart especially because Chavo and Chris were so close

@@hankriseshill1898 I just want to state an opinion here and please don’t attack me for it. I know mental trauma can be extremely damaging. It wasn’t his fault that he had CTE. His fault was that he chose not to do anything about his declining mental health because he wanted to keep his wrestling career, and not be made a laughing stock by the locker room guys. He let it deteriorate to a point where two other innocent people ended up paying the price.

I wouldn't trust RUclips cc. I noticed back in the day when I had a partly deaf person in my English class that when we watched RUclips videos and he had to have them on, it would spell out the weirdest things, half of the time it wouldn't even make sense.
Most definitely. I see it all the time my spell check will do crispin wall actually when I try to spell out Chris Benoit in my comments too,I usually only see captioning in YT homepage as I'm scrolling,but they do oddball things that make no sense aren't anywhere near real words etc.I just noticed that with Benoit's name it's always been the same nonsensical phrase

Losing Johnny Grunge really was the final straw after that Chris really had no one. Tragic how all these could factor into turning a celebrated wrestler into a complete monster.
I really wish the Vice doc went more into that, because the way it was glossed over made it seem like Johnny was there to handle Chris whenever he lost his temper.
@@kwizzeh Dave Penzer talked about it. He said Johnny Grunge was kind of the counselor and friend to both Chris & Nancy ad said if Johnny was still around this would not have happened.
I've not heard a single person who knew Chris, say that he was anything but a sweet, kind, quiet, private guy. I truly believe he "Snapped" that fateful weekend.
Numerous wrestlers have spoken about him bullying them in WWE and Heyman spoke of him bullying rookie wrestlers in ECW

Matthew Randazzo wrote about Paul Heyman observing how he really enjoyed hazing and bullying rookie wrestlers just starting out in the business while being super deferential to any of the veteran wrestlers (classic bullying behavior ....he bullys who he knows he can get away with it and those who he can't he kisses their ass or in the case of scott hall pissing on his legs and shoes as he was talking to benoit super tough guy Benoit does absolutely nothing )
His being one of the leaders of the group of foreign wrestlers that held down some rookie referee on a tour of Japan and shaved his hair with a razor cutting his scalp up so it bleeding and then rubbing Wasabi hot sauce all over the cuts on his scalp to cause him more pain
This was all to teach him a lesson
There are more stories about him dragging people in to the ridiculous wrestlers court in the middle of the night
To he wrestlers who were his friends he was sweet loving, polite, and kind person
To those not on that list it was open season to be bullied

I honestly believe the combination of brain damage and the loss of Eddie made him severely depressed i think he just snapped a moment of pure madness. I never could get my head around the way he killed Nancy and Daniel truly brutal but Chris wasnt a brutal kind of guy. He snapped!
When it’s all said & done no matter how hard the pill is to swallow.. Chris Benoit did this.. he murdered his wife and son then took his own life.. but still NO ONE can really say what happened and why he did it they’re no longer living.. but rip to them all it’s just such a tragedy..
Maybe in Benoit's mind he killed his son as a way to 'project' him from a life of sorrow in which his Dad killed his Mom, ending a life that started out so great and loving. As warped as it is, it could have been done because he had so much love for him.

Benoit is on every WWE DVD I have, wasn't blocked out of them. He's on the peacock network too! Benoit vs Jericho at rr01 ic title ladder match, it's my favorite ladder match ever.
There are instances of head trauma wherein a person's personality changes or he forgets who he is and commits terrible crimes without his knowledge.
