There's a reason i never faulted him for his mistakes during his off periods because while they were downright awful at times and easily worth dropping most goalkeepers for he had more than earned the right to have a bad season or two. The sheer amount of times that man has saved shots he had no business stopping in a United shirt is unreal. We had some of the worst defences at times just conceding shot after shot and good chances too not questionable shots from sketchy positions, and De Gea just managed to keep the ball out of the next in some of those seasons

De Gea was easily one of the best keepers United have ever had. I grew up watching United in the 90s fielding stoppers such as Les Sealey (RIP), Gary Walsh and the great Peter Schmeichel, and all the rest who filled in between then and now (Barthez, Taibi, Bosnich, Van Der Gouw, Howard, Carroll, Romero et al). The thing is, it’s really been exaggerated how “bad” he is with his feet by everyone. It’s not THAT bad. He’s just not that 11th outfielder. Maybe this makes him less desirable for a top team, but there are plenty of top goalkeepers who aren’t as good with their feet. Nick Pope was arguably the best in the league last season, and he’s nothing special with the ball at his feet. Areola has been one of the best this season, and he’s a classic shot stopper, too. It doesn’t help that De Gea is terrible rushing off of his line as well, so that makes it worse, but I think he’s just been treated this badly cuz he played for United for so long. It was the right time for him to be let go. He made too many mistakes in his last season. Especially shot stopping mistakes, which is where the line was drawn. However, I hope he finds the right team to suit his style, and he continues his career at least into his late 30s. He was still making better saves than any other keeper in the world last season. His reflexes are not human.

You state tgat football has changed considerably in the past ten years. That may well be true, but the introduction of a goalkeeper that functions like an extra defender was done in 1974, when Jongbloed became the goalkeeper of the Dutch team as a request of Johan Cruyff, above the legendary and far superior Jan van Beveren, as well as the slightly superior Piet Schrijvers, because of his ability to participate as an extra defender ;).
Later in the 90`s, when he became a manager of Ajax and Barcelona, he always selected goalkeepers that were also good footballers

How could anyone blame De Gea for lost match against Russia in 2018 when he legit saved everything but penalties and only lost the series because Akinfeev was possessed by some fucking football demon that day?

Towards the end he hardly ever looked comfortable, was a liability in the air, wasn’t commanding enough and even his stop shotting was questionable. Made some fantastic saves on occasions, but would then let some absolute pea rollers slide in…

When the playing out from the back at every opportunity fad dies out, already signs in euro 2024, a goalkeeper like De Gea will be valued again. At the moment it is comical seeing teams without the players with the skill level to play from back still try to do so.

Not a utd fan but he was a good keeper, and I think he may do well at Newcastle if the move comes, just look at the improvement of Nick Pope with his feet, he is not world class, but he was probably the worst in the league, now he is more comfortable. As you mentioned 33 is a ridiculous age for a keeper of that class to hang up his gloves. As long as he as a stinker against Arsenal I don't care where he goes really, just hope he finds somewhere.

2014-2018 he was easily the best goalkeeper in the league and definitely a top 5 in the world. Very much the reason why United got close to the top 4 or finished there comfortably. In that period he was definitely amongst the best in the league. I say he was still solid during Solskjaer’s first full year despite mistakes were creeping in.
Fast forward to the end of the Jose mourinho era after the World Cup and middle period of the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era,he started making quite a few mistakes. In fact during the midway point of Ole’s second full season,he was replaced in the league by Dean Henderson as Ole wanted to play more expansive. While he was solid in Ten Hag’s first year as he won the golden glove and makes a lot of key saves but makes a lot of key blunders.
Part of the reason why he isn’t signed by any clubs other than his wages is the style of play was limited especially as teams want very multi facet goalkeepers who are more than just shot stopping. He wasn’t known to be a good distributor of the ball or someone who can sweep however he wasn’t really someone who is very assertive. Rarely claim crosses or have any aerial presences,be part of the build up and even his best attributes shot stopping wasn’t as good as it once was. In short the game evolve but he didn’t
I do feel United did treated him harshly and could have one season where he can play in cup competitions or the occasion league games while United makes a transition to a more proactive goalkeeper which was something Solskjaer was doing in his second year. Nevertheless his 2014-2018 very much cemented him a legendary status as before Bruno Fernandes,he was very much a shining light in United’s struggles

They brought in a keeper who is good with the ball at his feet and can play from the back, and they are no worse at playing out from the back than ever and only win when playing long balls. I like Onana, I think he started off badly but will come good. But they changed keeper for a specific reason and that has not come to fruition, the tactics are either not being trained or they are not working, just another massive waste of money.

Good video overall, but imo you spent way too much time with quotes from Man Utd people (biased). Non-United people weren't praising him this much, as he was peaking during the peak of Neuer and Buffon was still great. Regardless, superb GK.
One day GK trainers will realize that feet should be used more for saves. So many goals are conceded because GKs try to save low balls/balls next to the body with their hands, when simple feet movement would have done the job...
