  • Amid a mobilization push for Ukrainian men living abroad, two Ukrainian fathers in Prague told RFE/RL that they do not plan to be potential conscripts fighting for their homeland. Ukrainians abroad could face stark choices when a new mobilization law comes into force on May 18.

While I agree that family comes first, there are many roles that these people could play while in the military. Less than 20% of conscripts in the Ukrainian army are in combat roles. It is a real fact that they are afraid and use family as an excuse. They don't care about their country or about their families, just about themselves.

Now they are demanded to go back, fight and quite possibly die for the very country they had chosen to leave. Many no longer have their families there and therefore have much reduced emotional connection to their country of origin. Or maybe that man and his 19 year old son could volunteer to be trained on Patriots. That way he can have his immediate family safe in the west and protect them at the same time. Wester corporations like BlackRock will own the infrastructure and resources, Western influence will force progressive social agendas upon the population, direct the country on how to "build back better," and probably throw a couple million migrants into the mix, arguing that Ukraine has to take their share. The problem is that the so-called democracy of the West is not so democratic, or at least excessively selective about its direction, and would be at least as corrosive to Ukraine as the threats emmanating from Russia.

People don't want to fight, how can that be a problem? They will return when everything is over, like they supposed to do.
Who wants to fight also can't be stopped, the front is open for a fresh meat.
People have own interests, benefit of media, government, warmongers is not their priority.
After all, probably most of Ukrainian people wait for Russians to win, wish that with all their hearts. We should be honest about that

One of the parents should return. They cannot explain away their betrayal with excuses of family or morals or religion. If this were a political fight one could argue that they dont believe in the reasons for fighting but this is an existential fight.
Their reasons for not fighting are the same as the reason others choose to fight. Why are they better or their circumstances any different to those who are fighting?
They will not get a warm reaction if and when they do return. I empathise with their fear but it's the same for everyone.
I hope they get second class treatment if they sit the war out and that the fighters get privileged status. I hope they don’t benefit in any way from the fact that they stayed safe, when Ukraine is victorious and the rebuilding begins.

There are demographic reasons to consider when you draft below 25. Many are still at university. There could be exemptions for certain situations. However there seems to be reports of a new wave of volonteers that have been joining this spring, so it may not be necessary.

I think its difficult for us armchair warriors to fully appreciate the difficult choices this man had/has to make. Tragedy for all concerned except The EU and USA.

While i agree that family is the most important, the rest of what you stated is untrue. Ukraine has made progress in reducing corruption, and Zelensky is leading Ukraine in the right direction. Much of the corruption is a result of Russian meddling within Ukraine as well. Ukraine will be a great nation if they succeed in taking back their lands. They deserve our support.

I have an almost pathological lack of sympathy. I met a Ukrainian draft dodger in the United States. He was weak and a punk. He whined about how America was so unfair to him. It's complicated, but I admit I had an irrationally strong dislike for him. I think we may have "crossed paths" previously in 2022 when I was headed east across Ukraine toward the Donbas and he was running west like a weasel towards the home I left.

Given the history of corruption among various Ukrainian leaders and officials over the past three decades, which resulted in the misappropriation of the nation’s wealth and the squandering of numerous opportunities for economic development and strengthening the country, my willingness to lay down my life for Ukraine is conditional. I believe that those who have contributed to this legacy of corruption should be held accountable and, if possible, conscripted to serve on the front lines. Such a measure would not only serve as reparation for their past actions but also demonstrate a commitment to the nation’s future. Only with this level of accountability and shared sacrifice can we begin to rebuild trust and unity within the country.
