Detailed review of the Huddleston Bluegill

  • Huddleston lures have a cult-like following and unmatched devotion from the scores of anglers who's personal best has come on one. Adding to the ever popular trout series is the highly anticipated bluegill. In keeping with the Huddleston philosophy it is subtle, natural, and accurate not only in its physical design but also in its movement in the water. Currently is it offered only in a weedless model and this is the lure's ace in the hole. Many other bluegill imitations exist, but none with the feature combination of ultra high realism matched to a weedless design. I found the HuddGill to be a very good swimbait overall, but not without some shortcomings. However, this is only the first release of these lures and there is nothing stopping Huddleston from tweaking the current design to achieve different and/or better versions of this lure.

    I have heard that adding a split ring can help with keeping the bait straight on the retrieve. I'll know for sure soon, I purchased one for this season to try along with a few other Hud's. Good luck

    Love your videos man. Just started to really get into bass fishing and I've found your videos to be really helpful. Haven't even thought of using swim baits yet. Still trying to get the basics down (senkos, tubes, frogs, etc..), but when I get a little more confidence I'll give some of the swim baits a try. Thanks for the videos and keep'em coming!

    Not sure how I missed this one. I saw all sorts of drama about them swimming sideways. It was a joke how the ROF5 just had a tiny piece of lead on the hook that would separate from the hook and swing around. I've refused to buy them after a bunch of my friends had some that swam sideways as well as the entire hardness (which is essentially just a bare hook) tear out. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of Savage Gear's bluegill!

    Excellent video Carl, as usual. Glad to see you shouting out Ken in STE, I could listen to him spit his philosophy for hrs, lol.
    On the ROF 5 that you modified w the weight, did you see any difference in how it swam? As in, did it help w the tilt?
    Congrats on starting a fam dude!!! Having children is the most enriching life experience IMO. That said, you are wise to realize the impact it will have on your fishing time :)

    • @KeepinItReelFishing

      toadslayer72 What it is man!? The one I added the weight to swam about the same as before I added it. You can see from the clips that the eyelet on the darkgill (the one I repaired) extends from the lure more than it should. I can only think that when I put it all back together than I didn't have the stock weight perfectly in place. So, even with the additional weight it still was swimming off center a bit. Thanks man....on the kid front we haven't started trying yet, but soon enough. Going to start in September.

    It's kind of incredible that a company can make a lure look and act so realistic. There's two sides of fishing, the lures you beat up because they are cheap and catch fish, then the lures that are so nice and so expensive you're scared to catch fish with them because it might ruin them.

    I think i'm sold on Huddlestone. Now time to get a swimbait rod and some bluegills, maybe a trout or 2. What were the colors featured in this video? Is that the phantom bluegill? I can't seem to find an exact one w/ the blue and yellow top belly.

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing  7 лет назад +1

      The colors vary a bit because they are all hand painted. But, to answer your question none of the ones in this video were the phantom finish. I had one in dark bluegill, one in light bluegill (there wasn't a big difference) and one in crappie. The new version is called the "tophook" and there is only one version of the bluegill color now, in addition to a crappie and a silver/green color.

    • @209UNKNOWN
      @209UNKNOWN 7 лет назад

      I've read below after posting. Had you tried the new versions yet? Doesn't look like there's any newer vids dedicated to the new 'tophook' Hudd Gills from your uploads.

    Thank you for such a detailed and informative video. What pound test like would you recommend. I'm aware that many anglers fish a braid to mono/flurocarbon combination. I plan on using straight mono/co-polymer. Is 20pound test sufficient in your opinion? Thank you and I have subscribed to your channel.

  • @bradreid6057
    @bradreid6057 9 лет назад

    Carl, it would seem to me that the company might be able to move the hook, a larger one, a bit farther back toward the front of the dorsal fin, then sort of camouflage a more or less standard jig -type weed guard in the fin itself. It'd snag more fish as the hook would be nearer the top crest of the fish; that, and the bait wouldn't have to be as deeply "swallowed" as its current configuration requires. You are correct: this bait looks promising and just needs a bit of tweaking to make it even better. Brad

    is there any diffidence between the Huddgill you reviewed in this video and the current ones they are making? TW says its a new item on their website and I thought I read somewhere that they are plan on or already improved the huddgill design?
    I bought one as my first "big" swim bait and I was pretty disappointed when I got on the water and it wouldn't swim upright. I got lazy and didn't retie as often as I should and lost it on a back cast. I plan on replacing it with a 6 or 68, I just really wanted it to like this bait.

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing  8 лет назад

      Yup....different designs. The new ones use a differnt hook, set at a different angle. I believe the internal lead assembly is retooled as well. The line tie on these us on top, vs in front (in the nose) of the previous version. Also, the new ones only come in ROF 12, where the old ones came in ROF 5 and ROF 12. I just received one of the new "tophook" models this week. I'll be fishing it soon and see how it performs.

    What pound test fishing line and kind of line were you using with this lure? And what pound test line will get the maximum dept or does it matter?

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing  8 лет назад

      It was either 17 or 20lb copolymer.....I don't recall which one. Maximum depth will always come from a thinner line, and specifically a thin fluorocarbon line. Of course you don't want to go TOO thin with a pretty large lure. The good thing about fluoro is that it is a thinner line than mono or copolymer of the same lb strength rating. If maximum depth is your goal I would say 17 or 20 fluorocarbon (or just put some tungsten nail weights into the belly of the lure itself).

    • @kfs4869
      @kfs4869 8 лет назад

      What's your opinion of using a braided fishing line with fluorocarbon leader with swim bait? I was thinking about a 40-50 LB test braid main line and 17-20 fluorocarbon leader.

    IMO the bait separating from the hook is ideal. In the event a 15 lb fish is on your hook and throws the bait because of leverage will break your heart. I got several huds and caught several teeners and unfortunately lost several teeners because of leverage. Cheers!

    Hey keepingitreelfishing. Have you had the chance to review the top hook huddgill. I just ordered 2 of them. I'm wondering if it would be more durable than the older weedless. I can tell from the photos it exposed ever so slightly. Hopefully it does well close to being weedless.

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing  6 лет назад

      Hey man - I have not done a separate review on the top hook model, but I do have one. This is anecdotal, as I have not fished my new top hook one a ton, but nothing about it indicates it would be any more durable. Slightly different internal harness and hook angle, but otherwise the same. The new top hook models run more true (upright) than the original ones, but I think thats largely due to the fact that the new ones only come in the heavier ROF12 weight....which keeps them "keeled" better. The point of the hook pokes out the tiniest amount. I would think for all intents and purposes its almost as weedless/snagless as the original. However, the idea was to improve hook-up ratio by repositioning the hook, so there will be some slight tradeoff as I think you will probably get a few more weeds here and there due to hook placement. My lack of fishing the new one is not due to it being a bad lure....quite the opposite. I LOVE these things! They are really THE deal in a true, realistic profile weedless bluegill lure. The swimming action is subtle and very nice. I've just been testing so many other things, but I plan to fish it pretty hard come spring.

      Dane D Fishing Thanks Dane! And man....that really stinks about the lost footage! I've had that happen too. I have been mostly swimbaits...probably 80%, but there are times and places where the smart choice (or the only fishable choice) is something else. I too have been fishing frogs.....just the largest ones I can find. The same philosophy as to why big swimbaits catch big fish I apply to other lures. I'm using some worms....but only 12". I have my 6" frogs and I have jigs with trailers on them so big they are 2X the size of a normal jig. The bite has slowed down dramatically for me the past 5 weeks, but I'm patient and hopefully before years end I'll have a few more "trophy" size NJ fish.

      When I made/uploaded this video Huddleston had only come out with the standard weedless model (still on their site as well). Due to customer feedback they later released a revised model called the "Top Hook" that changed the line tie point, type of hook and angle of hook. It IS exposed, but only by about 1mm from the hook slot/pocket.

    With my luck first cast a musky would bite off the tail.

      Tell me about it. I've thought about picking a few of these up for Northern Pike but the price tag could really end up hurting my wallet...which is already strapped as it is thanks to my lure addiction.

    I think fish30acre has a more realistic hill than mattlures. Just my opinion

    I personally think this is the most realistic it flows but the Matt lures is kinda blotchy and too much vibrant colora

    This bait falls apart wayyyy to easily. I'm on my 2nd gill and don't plan on buying another one

    Great review as always! I'm almost tempted to buy one but I'm still on the fence due to cost and hook up ratio.
