Too. Damn. Real. THE big shad swimbait. Mattlures Hammertail shad.

  • In four words or less I will describe the new Mattlures Hammertail Shad.
    Taxidermy quality
    Seductive swim
    If you only knew that, you would be well informed....but there is more that we will examine.
    Mattlures is releasing his newest big, soft swimbait for those in pursuit of giants. The realism is next-level stuff. Every physical attribute of a real shad has been realized in the design of this bait. Details abound from the scaling, to clear fins, to gill plates, and subtly faded- multi color metallic paint. Its ALL there. But, bass don't look at a lure at a tabletop to appreciate such nuance. They see it swimming and decide whether to eat. As you will see from the underwater footage seen from afar, those same small details add up to a look in the water that simply approaches a real living, swimming shad, more so than any other large, soft shad bait I have seen. Utilizing a large, pendulum style tail this bait can be crawled along the bottom, slowly, while still eliciting full tail kicking action. Those who have long fished the 8" Huddleston trout, but have shad and not trout in their waters, are in for a treat. This is a very large lure, particularly in height (belly to backline). After two and a half months fishing the Hammertail Shad I feel it is a standout lure for those pursuing TRULY giant bass.

    Another great vid Carl. Hey swimbait manufacturers, just like the Hudd, see how that head has very little side to side action, very little searching, that's how a real fish swims, and what makes the Hudd, and Matt's do great. Noticed that internal structure too, and agree with your "wish". Just waiting for a vid of a fish on it!

      KeepinItReelFishing not sure if Barry Lake is public access. When I lived there, anyone could fish that lake. It has some big bass and pickerel. I walked there when I was a child and fish any time I wanted. I was introduced to the technique of fishing Jelly worms. (Specifically purple and black). I would love to go back.

    Lureworks Bondcoat put on the harness and allowed to dry before pouring the plastic will prevent slippage big time. It almost works too well when you want to reuse a harness. I have mentioned it to Matt. Not sure what the issue was but he said it would not work for him. Hopefully he finds something to help with this. Good looking bait for sure. Thanks for posting.

    I made the wedgetail Egret baits have, back in the late nineties. Lonnie Stanley patented it and marketed it, and now Egret has it. Bill Siemantel seen Lonnie swimming it at an Icast show, and took some to Ken in Bend Oregon, and they used it, to evolve the Huddleston. Smithbaits used the wedge tail on their six inch swimmer. I made the patented cylinder tail, that Black dog has sat on. I made the tail, Jerry Rago is using on his Alpha tail series. I gave it to Grant Olguin, and he showed it to Rago. Jerry called me, and asked if he could use it, which I told him to go for it. I sent a swimmer to Matt, but He wanted something different, so I told him to make a forked cylinder tail, and do some blending at the front portion and put in his tail ray cosmetics, which is now the hammer tail. He did a good job of it. Dream Smasher swimbaits, I gave the originals to Dave Cindrich and now, owner Tom Campbell, and He has done a wonderful job on his baits, and the only one that has given me credit for the designs, publicly. I have many more sweet tails. Just swam a new one, that wants to touch its nose ,with the tail. Just giving a little history on the origin, ,of the many tails, that are still coming ,from the original. Years from now,there will be as many swimtails ,as the Mr. Twister Sassy Shad paddle tail, has become, after the patent ran out. Everyone of these swimmer tails on the market,bar none, including Matts super sweet Hammertail ,is action adjustable. The wider, or thicker the tail, tail connection ,and body, the slower and wider, it will swim, from side to side. The narrower the tail thickness, tail connection and body, the faster and narrower, the tail will swim. I have very thin tails,tail connector and shad bodies, that swim very rapidly like a fleeing shad, and vice versa. You could actually make three or four shad models, to fit various swim rates. the rapid swimmers ,are good burn and search baits.

    Never clicked on a video card so fast before. An amazing KIRF video was much needed! Loved the video as always. Kudos to Matt like always on the extreme realism of his baits, but I agree that he needs a weedless model in most all his bait lines. Speaking from another Northeast big bait angler, its just so much better fishing a weedless style bait in my opinion since our lakes typically have so much cover that isn't just rocky bottom.

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the love bro. And yes, I totally agree with you. If Matt were to make a weedless model (particularly a bluegill), that would be a lure that I don't think would ever come off one of my rigs. The bulk of my success here in NJ has come from putting particularly large lures into places only weedless models can go. That 1-2-3 punch of big, real looking, and weedless is, to me, the holy grail (or....I guess holy trinity :P)

    • @jtbassfishing370
      @jtbassfishing370 6 лет назад

      KeepinItReelFishing amen to the weedless bluegill idea! I have lots of fun with the Little Creeper Sunfish, but I still want that taxidermy weedless Gill like you do. Always welcome for the love bro. It's well deserved, especially when you're a big part in why I now sling the big stuff with no fear through all the ups and downs.

  • @christopherpettersen2359
    @christopherpettersen2359 6 лет назад

    Great to see you back in action. That lure is incredibly realistic for sure. The heck with the NJ pickerel, there is a lake I fish here in NJ that the musky thrive on big shad like that. While I don't target them, I can see them busting on them.
    As always, great review.

  • @H8er-Maker
    @H8er-Maker 6 лет назад +2

    That swimbait looks awesome. Solid, thorough review. I consider the swimbait my go to bait. The colors scheme looks amazingly life-like but in my opinion jointed balsa baits have a far more life-like movement. The Savage & Huddleston baits of this class just seem to move too little for the speed they are moving. Even with that said I will have 1 in my box when available. Cuz let's face it, any avid bass fisherman would gladly put himself in the poor house if offered sumthing that catches the biggest fish in the lake.

    Everybody talking about durability, ever wondered why hudds, sick fish, matt lures, and others have such good looking swimming action and work so good? It's because there made out of soft, supple, plastic. Durability comes at a cost, the cost is you lose action. If your having trouble try mend it. That'll help. But idc if I only get 2 good fish on these it's worth it.

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing  5 лет назад

      Totally agree Trey. People get hung up on durability, but the point of these bigger swimbaits is not to catch 20 fish a day, but to give one the best odds at a big bass. A large part of which is, like you said, convincing action. Plus, once a bait gets to a certain size there is just so much plastic, which is bound to be thick, that they MUST soften it down considerably to get any kind of action. Thanks for watching and dropping the comment. Tight lines!

But, if your on the fence I can recommend the Browser XH with confidence it is satisfies the weight range of big lures you have. Would a rod and reel combo like that work for 6.8 Keitech FAT's rigged weedless??? I am considering selling my Tatula HD (on a cranking rod) but at the same time consider keeping it and adding it to a swimbait/A-rig rod... Was tempted to sell a ton of stuff for a Steez XH JDM to just go ultimate river finesse, but the big baits and bites still call my name...

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing  6 лет назад

      Yes, it will work with the 6.8"....although its at the very low end weight wise of what the rod is rated for. So, you will have all the hook setting power you need, but you won't be able to get quite as long a cast as if you used one power level lower (the Heavy model). But, if you think you might be using bigger 3oz+ stuff in the future I think this one rod would satisfy most of what you would want to do (except lighter treble hook lures).

      KeepinItReelFishing i sure will. Thanks. Its the most realistic lures i ever seen. I already own the the ultimate blue gill and u2 gill. I was wondering if he can make a 4 to 5 inch version or the hammer trout in califrornia trout. 10inch is a little too big for me and my area i fish.

      I hear ya....that would be a solid option. Who knows....I'm sure Matt will look over these comments. Maybe your planting the seed of possibility.

      KeepinItReelFishing i really appreciate all you keepin it reel review vidz. Im always anxious to watch it when the notification pops up. Lol. I got one more question. Im thinking about an all around swimbait and regular size lure rod from 13fishing. Wat would u choose 8' xheavy? If not wat brand rod and model would u choose? Thanks in advance.
