hell yea welcome back man! i finally got my cold water monster this year and it didn't come on a swimbait. On nov. 16 this passed fall i hooked into a 6.11 PB on the tactical bassin' DD crankbait in 41* water. ill take in for massachusetts
That's awesome John! I distinctly remember their video on that lure and using it in the winter/cold water temps. That approach is a complete 180 to what so many people advise which is "you can't go too slow" in water that cold. Upon watching that video I thought it kind of made sense though because people completely associate blade baits with winter and you rip them up fast and they fall down in a flash....aka a reaction strike approach. Congrats to you on that catch and putting in the time exploring a new technique. That must have been ultra rewarding.
Yeah, the expo was pretty dope. Thats a good pick up man. I'm ALL about weedless lures, have been for years. Even in areas where I don't need it to be. The fact that Joe makes so many models in that configuration is awesome and is going to equate to a lot of giant fish for a lot of people. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and your interest in the past. I hope you've found some of the content beneficial.
I"m so glad you feel that way Pedro. Thats what I'm shooting for with these long-length vids. I could edit them down to 10 minutes, but in this style of fishing I want to try to share the "grind" element of putting in a lot of time for the reward. And, since I'm quite verbose there is always footage of me talking about somethin'! ha ha. Thanks for hanging with me and leaving the feedback.
The myth ,the legend keep it reel fishing so glad to see a video from ya hope u can bring some more content this year. Might wanna try a smaller tripod just so it's not top heavy and if u accidentally hit it with rod it wont go in water u can even get camera mounts that hold onto stuff like that cross bar on canoe.
Hey Matthew. Thank you for dropping the comment. Yeah, I hope/plan to be more active on here this year. Regarding the tripod....your fears are unjustified! haha. I've been rocking that same system for a full ten years now. Its amazingly stable....even with my full size SLR cameras.
Throwing giant baits on proper gear is so much fun! Even to see a 10-12lb bass fallow your bait to the boat is amazing! And, every now and again, that double digit bass will inhale your 12” bait!
Awesome catch man , Thanks for the tips on how to catch a giant, January now , its cold but im after them. Great level of commitment to throw those big baits all day ,, maybe catch nothing so kudos to you for hanging in there , lesson learned , Thanks again
This is such good filming and storytelling, I love it! And doing it alone makes it even more impressive. Makes me want to try this big swimbait tactic on perch here in Sweden. We adopt a lot of U.S. bass methods and the NED hype is just exploding, especially now in wintertime but I wonder how a slow-rolled larger soft swimbait would do.
I thought the same thing watching this channel years ago. With English Perch here in Victoria Australia I adopted the same mentality upsizing craw/minnow/swimbait presentations in the dead of winter. It has worked wonders for what I consider to be truly large perch for my waters. I have dead crawled some 5 inch soft swimbaits and had great success. After the initial thump I wait before i feel weight and set(almost identical to how he has explained). This channel however more than anything has prepared me mentally to grind long sessions for potentially only a handful of bites...but the right ones
@@Donald8008 That's really interesting to hear! Are you using similar styles of weighted weed less hooks for that? 5 inches is definetly a sizeable lure for perch. I am ready to try out this grind on a local water that is known for big perch but thay are almost exclusively caught by specimen anglers on bloodworms or maggots.
@@aleksanderjaworowski755 Yes I do enjoy fishing weedless and I'll use a screw lock to hold the bait to get more trips from it. Some successful lures I use are the OSP Dolive Shad/Keitech swimmer/OSP 3-4inch craw. They have a great action on slower dead rolling. I would work my way up with sizing to build confidence however as it can seem quite a large bait to throw initially. You will find your happy medium and limit to sizing you'd consistently throw. I also throw chatterbaits and find them incredible on English perch especially in the open lakes and reservoirs I fish. Two that I enjoy throwing are Zman Jackhammer (with a large trailer) and Jackall Derabreak which catches all sizes
@@Donald8008 that’s some great info. I haven’t really tried out chatterbaits yet but they are breaking into the market this last season here so I will pick some up fore sure! I tried some larger westin shadteez and berkley power swimmers last trip but found them to not really move that well on a slow retrieve. Will definitely try your mentions!
Thank you Mark. Your right, your right....5lbs IS the cut off of why I use the big baits. But, somedays I dont have a voice out there....just focused. Others days for whatever reason I'm in narration mode. So, between the cool looking conditions, some info on approach, and a decent fish I thought '"ets put this one up!" I appreciate you taking the time to watch and for leaving the comment. Have a great day man.
You could be the spokesperson for real prey 👍 picked up 4 of joe’s lures this winter, 2 of them the 7.75” rainbow and brown trout with top hook. (Your other video inspired me) I was pumped when I saw you had a new video out, especially with the real prey. Really enjoy the style of your vids, very relaxed. I would like to fish your lake but I’m in pa so I would need another license plus my 10’2” pond prowler boat is too short to be allowed on that lake. Great catch!
Haha....I'm not trying to be a spokesman, I just like what he makes. Yeah, those larger 7.75" models are a fantastic Hudd alternative. Your right Patrick regarding the boat length and this place. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment....I appreciate the feedback.
@@KeepinItReelFishing your vids have definitely given me confidence to throw the big real prey trout. I had ordered a couple smaller ones and then joe said I might want to try a big trout. Then I came across your channel and now feel ready to give them a shot ( once the lakes melt) 😁
That square stern design makes it awkward to reach the trolling motor handle. Your Sportspal review sold me on this canoe. Was thinking about going with the S13 square stern because it's rated for a 3 hp motor. I don't know what to do now after seeing you reaching over your shoulder to operate it. Maybe I should go with the s14 pointed and run a small motor on that side mount. Would be about the same weight as your 45 pound MinnKota hanging on there. Any suggestions?
If you ever want to try out a private lake in NNJ that has some tanks in it we should connect. I live near Sloatsburg and only started throwing bigger baits this year, but I have 3 fish over 5lbs since August. I'm sure you could find some giants in here, I've seen them easily >6 following my glides in early spring.
Hey man, I live in Staten Island NY and I fish out of this man made reservoir which I believe has the state record bass. I’ve seen with my own eyes 9-10 pounders in this lake I just haven’t gotten them to bite. Not much cover in this lake and I fish from the bank because there’s no boats/ kayaks allowed on this body of water. You are the man and I was going to ask what you would recommend as the water gets colder. I know they like the trout colored soft swimbait and I want to find something I can throw this fall over and over and hopefully get that fish Atleast over 5 that will cap off my year
Hi Jeffrey, if you are truly seeing 9-10's thats beyond epic for that area. I hope they are what you think, but water has a way of magnifying fish silhouettes. The answer to your question is easy and WAY proven. The 8" Huddleston or what I used in this video (7.75" Real Prey trout) worked along the bottom and slow. Some people say you can't go to slow, but even these pendulum style swimbaits will stall out if retrieved too slow. As such, go slow....but not too slow. You can't feel the tail kick on these when worked slow, so you really need to get a feel working it in shallow/clear water where you can see the lure to see what the stall speed is. Once your dialed with that speed your good to go. Also, you may not have noticed, but in this video after I got the strike I maintained my retrieve speed for a few seconds, then gave a decisively quicker reel or two. I was hedging on the chance that the bass that hit was still tailing the lure, and maybe needed some provocation to strike again by making my trout 'escape'. Even in winter cold water its applicable to integrate after a strike and after a constant retrieve speed hasn't yielded a follow up strike with 2-3 seconds. You may also want to consider following up the large trouts with the mid size offerings....like Hudd 68 Specials or Real Prey Forage trout. ***Always show the large 8" model first, then follow up with these. Lastly, a jig. Some people go crazy small with their jigs in winter, but the same reason why a Hudd works (its big) I like to keep my jigs large in fall/winter. Specifically, I use a standard size jig, but put something like the Savage Gear 5" 3D/4D craw on it. Or, those very realistic craws are also (maybe even better) good rigged without the skirted jig. I like to use the Savage Gear craw with their 1/16oz screw lock hook and run that deep over large rocks. Its takes forever to sink, and you MUST work it stupid slow (otherwise you loose bottom contact). But, that light 1/16oz will prevent it from really wedging into the cracks of large rocks and you can work it effectively down there. This is an even slower retrieve than the Hudd as there is no tail to keep swimming. In cold water, on a long cast, and if done correctly, it usually takes me 8-10 minutes to work it back. And thats it. Those lures, worked in those ways, I believe are your best shot at a true giant, in clear water, in the fall/winter. Its not to say other ways wont work, but thats how I would approach it.
I remember awhile ago I checked his website and saw a new weedless option on a couple of his baits. Probably should've guessed you had something to do with it lol.
Ha ha.....thats not me. I was SUPER stoked when he started making weedless options....I think its been two years now. But, not all models did he offer it in. I just asked if he could incorporate it into the big 8" trout.....thats the model I REALLY wanted to have weedless (snagless) for the reasons mentioned in the video. Thanks for watching and the comment.
What up! Its a one-way chop up of course.....haha. But, such is the nature of the medium. Thank you for watching and taking a moment to drop the comment. Best of luck out there in 2022.
Nice to see you getting these hogs here in jersey. I have many swimbaits. Thing is I lose patience with them. Maybe we can team up sometime here in jersey and you can bring on my confidence with these big baits.
Hey Donnie. Well, most people would say bring only the big baits, but as I explain in here I don't subscribe to that philosophy. I feel the usage of them stems from a desire....almost a sickness, to catch a lifetime giant. When you can't turn that feeling off.....like a drunk NEEDING a drink, then the big baits come easy. Because, while it still may take years, they are definitely the shortest route to a lifetime giant. I have a NJ 9lb fish with my name on it out there somewhere and every single cast that I make I'm one cast closer. Thats the mentality that keeps the big stuff in constant rotation.
Hi great video have you ever had the problem of the swimbaits like the 6 inch line through savage gear pulse tail and the 5 inch pulse tail roach permanently getting stuck in rock where its almost impossible to get it out ive been trying the last thew days swimbaiting and got permanently stuck .
Hi, Carl. I greatly admire your patience and perseverance. Since, like me, you're a fan of 8" soft-plastic swimbaits, I'm surprised that in the course of this video you didn't mention the Megabass Magdraft, which I think is a terrific bait. Have you perhaps tried it and found it ineffective? Keep up the great work.
Besides throwing big rat wakes, there's nothing more addicting than throwing BIG swimbaits, glides, or topwaters for bass!! I could watch big bait videos all night, with toothpicks holding my eyelids open if needed
Andy....watch my stuff brother and you will need a full box of toothpicks. I have yet to figure out how to make as short video...haha. Appreciate you watching and taking a moment to leave the feedback man.
You and me both! Every year I say it, so I may as well say it again......"I'm going to put out more content this year"! haha. There, I put it out into the Universe.
Long time fan of your videos, the Beast Coast Creep is another swim bait you may want to try . Caught some nice 5 & 6 lbers in Michigan last year on this one .
I caught a 4lb bass on my 7-3/4” realprey trout the other day. I got the bottom hook model and Butch Brown rigged it. I watched it suck it in and it tried to immediately blow it back out, but that #1 Trapper treble stuck him in the corner of the mouth. If that hook hadn’t been so sharp, I would have never gotten him.
I know! I have a friend in Mineral Wells, TX and he sent me a screen shot of the forecast. Actual temp one day was 116....before "real feel"!! I'm sorry for you guys. We tick triple digits rarely, your bass must be boiling! Haha
@@KeepinItReelFishing... yes they probably are boiling. They’re almost ready to eat...lol. I’m going to assume, the reason your bass generally don’t reach the same size and weight as southern bass do, is because it doesn’t get as hot there?
If you like the parabolic rods for hardbaits, I highly recommend the KGB Swimbaits Heavy (1oz-4oz) or XH (3oz-7oz). Stupid lightweight, and true to their rating.
Interesting, and thanks for the information. I see his posts and was curious as to their attributes. I had assumed/hoped they were parabolic being he deals with hard, treble hook lures.
Karl l ways get excited when upload a new video because I know it's going to be a good one! Glad to see your doing well and I hope 2022 is a great year for you! Tomorrow were expecting another 55 degree day in CT so I'm assuming you'll have similar temps hopefully you get out and catch an even bigger bass!
Whats up sir. Yeah, we have a little taste of spring these past few days. No fishing for me today, although planning on communing with nature with my little girl on some kind of hike. I may take a hike at a would-be fishing lake to do some recon though.....haha.
Hey Hurley, I didn't switch but I did come into this larger model. I still have my original and its never going anywhere. Wasn't looking for it, but it just kind of happened. Its the S-15 model, which is actually the 16ft S-16, but they square off the stern and call it the S-15. It adds an effective 2ft of additional interior length, which is awesome for when I take out the family or friends. Its 10lbs heavier than my original one, but due to its length that additional 10lbs feels/carries more like a 25lb increase. So this one is reserved for places where I can launch it at the water or not walk it very far. Your right about reaching for the motor being awkward, that was an unexpected byproduct of the layout which I didn't foresee. I actually took advantage of the square stern and purchased a 24V, 80lb thrust Minn Kota motor for it, which is fun but not quite as fast as I thought it would be. With a Kipawa prop it kits 5mph on the dot.
@@KeepinItReelFishing shoulda stopped into Jacksonville and I would have taken ya fishing. Just told a guy the other day you were the one that had me buying a dozen Ryoga's!

is that a new sportspal? i thought you had the non squareback one before. also have you thought about installing an ipilot motor on there before. or is it too much rigging
It is a new-ish one. Ive had it probably four years now. I still have my other one (S-14) and this is the S-15 (which is really the 16ft model, but with the end squared). I don't plan on on an ipilot, but I do have the Traxxis 24V, 80lb motor to go with this larger model. Although, in this video I was using the smaller 45lb thrust model.
Hey Troy. I have a few of the forage trouts too. I'm kind of with you, I feel for me here in the Northeast that slightly smaller size of the forage trout model might be the best model. Now you have me thinking......I'm going to see if Joe can make the forage in a weedless model! Hope you have a good 2022 man, tight lines.

36:38 I've used that for a couple years one day I had a 9+ lb fish and was near rock, and she somehow busted the clip and got off... just be careful. Seems solid but because of that I cant trust em.
Hey David. Yeah, about four years ago I came into this one. Wasn't looking for it, but it just kind of happened. Awesome job. Im from right outside Philadelphia and I have been watching your stuff for years. It has helped me to build confidence and to catch my PB 3 times over. Thank you and Happy new year to you and the family.
I'll start. I am all about simple. Palomar, or a improved clinch knot. WHAT??!! Improved clinch? "Thats what little kids tie when starting out" (most 'serious' anglers would chastise me). I know on the machines that test strength it isn't as strong as others, but realistically when a 5 or 6lb bass is a big one that knot is never getting tested. Those two knots are all I use to connect my lure. For leader to braid I use the Alberto, but after some failures (my own technique issues) I've been trying the 'Lefty Kreh' leader knot. Very few people talk about it, but its stupid easy to tie and those that use it swear by it. For me, so far its been utterly reliable.
@@KeepinItReelFishing thanks for the informative reply, Karl. simple is good enough for me, appreciate you keepin it reel. i notice both these knots have the tag end going back towards the line, and hence may not be too good for weedless application. is there a knot you'd recommend for that? ps. thoroughly enjoy all your videos. your detailed analysis of product reviews and explanation of your thought processes on the water has taught me a lot. 🙏

I am SO good on reels man. ha ha. I have looked at them countless times over the years and resisted. At this point, the proverbial "quiver" of big bait reels is full.
I have three of those bad boys the first is the OG one the second is the one with the stripes and the third is the deps edition I've used them for everything from salmon to bass in the end times they were used for catfish but now I run a kastking kapstan instead of the Z2020s just because of the better line capacity and bait clicker
Thats the one Omar. Its didn't fare well with the low light on this day (I was surprised how dark the image was). Not sure what happened as usually, even into dusk it performs better. Maybe I changed some setting.
Also, if any of you guys are on a budget and want to get into throwing huge baits I’ll share my set up;, 8’6” irod extra heavy swimbait rod, Okuma Citrix 364 baitcaster, 20lb Izorline copolymer and Savage Gear swimbaits! As far as big glide baits, Baitsanity and Swavers. For this combo and baits, expect to pay less than $500!
Good eyes Reed. Its a craw I've been doing very well with, the Chasebaits Mudbug. Its goes for a very accurate anatomical build, and it uses an Elaztech-like material (very stretchy, durable, and floats). Its an open water craw though. It has a wire hook guard that is visually minimal, but not adequate for any kind of cover.
Your right, your right. Typically I never mark fish, just structure. So in the moment I fished it like I always do when I see arches that aren't relating to anything.....just make a few quick casts. But, I also can't remember fishing in fog that thick so it played out the way it did.

Nice , a video upload! I picked an weedless real prey from the expo, I heard you were there. Been watching your videos for a long time.
I enjoyed that. Thank you . I just happened to pick up a 8" swimbait last weekend . I haven't used it yet .
Great video footage . Loved it. Felt like I was out on the water with you. So cool to see you get that c2c footage on your new rod 🤙🏽
Return of the king
Throwing giant baits on proper gear is so much fun! Even to see a 10-12lb bass fallow your bait to the boat is amazing! And, every now and again, that double digit bass will inhale your 12” bait!
Awesome catch man , Thanks for the tips on how to catch a giant, January now , its cold but im after them. Great level of commitment to throw those big baits all day ,, maybe catch nothing so kudos to you for hanging in there , lesson learned , Thanks again
PS , make more video's when you get time. Love this channel and your boat .
My guy with another great video and great catch!!
Thank you! And thanks for watching.
Good to see ya' back! Hope all's well.
Nice bass even if it wasn’t 5lbs. I like how you go over the conditions and your strategy and the different feeling bites. That’s all useful info.
Just saw this notification and I am pumped to watch this tonight! Your vids are great man. All the details we need without the BS
Excellent good to see you again thanks really appreciate the video 👍
Hey Janos. Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave the comment.
Glad you are back and I'm glad you don't fish the "forbidden fish" us heathens keep them for us.
Miss your informative, well-organized videos. Could listen to you talk about fishing for hours. Hopefully we see you soon.
Need you to keep the videos reeling in. I've heard mixed opinions on the "Sleeper Gill" lure. Any thoughts?
Good to see you Karl. Always looking to chop it up with you my man. There s no skipping forward. Lol.
What up! Its a one-way chop up of course.....haha. But, such is the nature of the medium. Thank you for watching and taking a moment to drop the comment. Best of luck out there in 2022.
@@KeepinItReelFishing Always enjoy your productions and perspectives. The pursuit continues….
The Goat! For swim baits!
Well done! Amazing patience, and commitment! Paid off!
Awesome video! Your channel seems really cool!! Just subbed too!👍
Hi great video have you ever had the problem of the swimbaits like the 6 inch line through savage gear pulse tail and the 5 inch pulse tail roach permanently getting stuck in rock where its almost impossible to get it out ive been trying the last thew days swimbaiting and got permanently stuck .
Nice! 👍🙏🎣⚒
Looks like you upgraded to the square stern canoe.
Awesome Job!! Love the content and looking forward to getting out soon!
Keep up the great work.
love the 8" Magdraft
Besides throwing big rat wakes, there's nothing more addicting than throwing BIG swimbaits, glides, or topwaters for bass!! I could watch big bait videos all night, with toothpicks holding my eyelids open if needed
Andy....watch my stuff brother and you will need a full box of toothpicks. I have yet to figure out how to make as short video...haha. Appreciate you watching and taking a moment to leave the feedback man.
WAY2GO! Cheers from Idaho!!! pre 500 sub here!
WOW man.....you go waaay back. I'm ten years on RUclips as of this year. Thanks for hanging out for the past......decade!
You gotta try the Leviathan Alpha Soft Swim rod. Hands down the best rod for big soft baits, ever made.
Omg we need more uploads in our lives 🤗
You and me both! Every year I say it, so I may as well say it again......"I'm going to put out more content this year"! haha. There, I put it out into the Universe.
well done!
yessssssssssssssssssssss always stoked to see you have a new video up
Long time fan of your videos, the Beast Coast Creep is another swim bait you may want to try .
I love days like that bro!
I’m from Texas and we’ve had 20 plus days of 100 + hot sunny as hell and miserable!
Why did you switch from s14 double ended canoe to a square stern? Seems harder to reach motor handle? I too have s14. Thanks. Hurley
Been waiting, for a new Vid. As always, awesome content.
He's BACK!
Hey Dave, hope your well sir. Happy belated new year. I just visited Florida a few weeks ago.....jealous of your weather!!

is that a new boat it looks like it has a square stern? thanks for sharing.
I have the 8’6” irod extra heavy paired with a Okuma Citrix 364… can easily cast an 6-8oz bait… I’ve thrown 10oz in it too …
Hey what ever happened to u and using Phoenix rods just asking bc I’m interested in them for swim baits and want to know your opinion
is that a new sportspal? i thought you had the non squareback one before. also have you thought about installing an ipilot motor on there before. or is it too much rigging
@@KeepinItReelFishing nice! i have the s14 and use it alot. but i'm thinking of getting a bigger one like that with a bit more motor
I have that bait in a jig hooked version. My favorite is his forage trout in that same pattern. Beautiful fish!!!
Hey Troy. I have a few of the forage trouts too. I'm kind of with you, I feel for me here in the Northeast that slightly smaller size of the forage trout model might be the best model. Thanks Robbie. Your right, insomniacs haven't had any new content to put them to sleep lately. Now they have this....haha.
hey all swimbait fishermen here! what knots do you guys tie for your softbaits? thanks in advance :)
■■■...hope all is well...u r missed bro!
so straight braid is your preference on the bigger baits ?
No. Braid to a leader on about 80% of my set ups. The system I used here was 65lb braid to 20lb fluoro (Seaguar Abrazx).

I am always surprised by the fact that you never got yourself the Daiwa Z2020. There are no better swimbait reels on the market.
Where did you go bro ? Your videos are very unique and much better than these trendy bs videos other channels produce.
Dude where yah been?
Living life Thomas. I fish plenty, and have a crazy amount of footage, its just finding the time to edit things together where it slows down.
The camera your running on the tripod is it the osmo action from dji?
HE DOES EXIST 🙃
What is your favorite overall reel when using big swimbaits?
What is that big craw bait you had?
Good eyes Reed. Its a craw I've been doing very well with, the Chasebaits Mudbug. Its goes for a very accurate anatomical build, and it uses an Elaztech-like material (very stretchy, durable, and floats). Its an open water craw though. It has a wire hook guard that is visually minimal, but not adequate for any kind of cover.
Mark waypoints on your graph when you see fish, that way you don't need the reference anything on land.
Your right, your right. Typically I never mark fish, just structure. So in the moment I fished it like I always do when I see arches that aren't relating to anything.....just make a few quick casts. But, I also can't remember fishing in fog that thick so it played out the way it did.
I live in Jersey. What lake is this? Thanks
