- If this lure could enlist, it would be a kick-ass Marine saying to the biggest bass in the lake, "COME GET SOME!!". Seriously, this extra large new bluegill swimbait from Mattlures is no joke.
Known for making exceedingly realistic swimbaits, Mattlures now offers a larger and more durable version of their much sought after and highly successful Hardgill swimbait. Coming in at a full 7" in length and weighing 4 oz, the Magnum Strong Gill is a seriously large bluegill lure. The detail is outstanding and the construction as robust as they come. This is a lure for those who are focused on pursuing trophy size fish and what better way then by offering them a giant version of one of their favorite prey fish...the bluegill. The swimming action is smooth, and yet also has a motion which implies injury or evasive/fleeing action. In a word this lure THUMPS. The immense pulse you feel through your rod when using it assures you that any fish in the area are aware of this lure. I see this also being a fantastic night fishing lure. I found no deficiencies or issues with the MAGNUM Gill during testing. If you are a fan of the smaller Hardgill, or hard bluegill swimbaits in general you are now looking at the king within that category. The MAGNUM does not come cheap with a price tag direct from the manufacturer of $110.00. That may be a non-starter to lots of anglers, but bear in mind these are hand crafted, hand painted, small production lures made here in the USA. In addition the detail is uncompromising and near taxidermy quality. I can fully recommend the MAGNUM Strong Gill as the finest hardbody jointed bluegill swimbait I have used to date.

Great review as always.I change my braid pound test up it to 65lb and shorten my leader to 5'.It happen by accident. I left my leader material home etc. My hookup ratio increased. No new PB yet had a slew of 4lbs and a few over 5lbs. Thanks for sharing 🤙☮️😎

Fished my new 6" perch hudd for the first time last night; caught a pair of 17" 2-2.5 pound bass within my first 15 casts.
Proceeded to swim it along a point and had something take - so I set the hook and my 20# test leader snapped; guess I've gotta buy more and bump it up to 25#

Congrats on the quick success on the 6" Hudd (thats one of my favorites). That will definitely help the confidence in these larger lures. I was CERTAIN I would hardly gets any bites when I started fishing the 8" model, and I got my PB within about 20 minutes of using it! Granted, that was an exception instance. But it proved the idea that you just never know when or where there is a giant waiting for that larger meal.
Thank you! I've been wanting to get into swimbait fishing for a while; but you're definitely right, this helps 'set the hook.' I would be lying if I said your video with that catch didn't help convince me! All about playing the odds; a big fish is much less likely to pass on the large well presented meal - I realized I'd rather have a better shot at a big one when the opportunity arises!

Man if you still read these comments I got a Matt lures ultimate bluegill and can NOT get it to swim down at all it immediately come to the surface and it’s pretty much a wake bait at that point, and pointers on how to keep it lower in the water column
That's interesting. I believe the Ultimate Gills are classified as a medium sink. I know mine all seem to sink faster than a slow sink. To answer you question, you could try to slide a tungsten nail weight in parallel to the belly or even just hang a small weight from the bottom hook hanger (if applicable). If you prefer not to mess with any of that contact the manufacturer, Matt Servant. He is typically very good with product support. I'm assuming you aren't reeling overly fast and/or have a 9:1 ratio reel...which would necessitate a consciously slow retrieve.

Hey Carp - 20lb mono or copoly. This lure gives so much feedback you can feel it good even with the 'stretchy' lines. And, you have the insurance policy / peace of mind vs braid.

I agree it is a functional piece of art. I am too scared to use them for fear of loosing them. So I have and underwater diorama that I display mine in among many others. I am a collector, but maybe I will brave enough to use them someday.

Fishing is TERRIBLE in jersey at least for me. My biggest bass is only 3 1/2lbs and I'm not even catching numbers either.

Hey Ryan - I actually picked up the newest version (the 4D line through trout) recently and plan to do a video on it. Thus far, no fish caught on it. But, I still plan to show the lures nice design and features as well as swimming action.

Would you go with Floating or Heavy Floating
Heavy float. You won't lose it (sink) if it happens to snap off, and it runs a bit deeper in the water giving the fish a better view of the body and profile. In a high detail lure like this....I think seeing it fully can only help. Plus, if you ever wanted to make it a super slow sink you can do that easily with heavier hooks or suspend strips.

U should checkout Clayton Sly on IG..his gills aswell as other swimbaits are EXTREMELY detailed and the swim is on point
I don't have any myself but I'd agree, I think he's one of the few other custom bait makers that can compete with the mattlures gills in terms of realism.
I have a few Jason.....two multi piece gills and a glide perch. Its been on the list of lures I plan to review. Much less editing on the next few.....hope to get them out a bit more regularly. He has an 8" glide gill coming out which I am particularly stoked about.

I'm disapointed with Mattlures. I've only had one lure that swimmed true and that was the Mattlures Baby Bass. I caught a big fish on it. Now he doesn't make it anymore... All the Mattlures U2's and Ultimate Gills I had (about 5 or 6) swimmed to one side. I don't know if that afects the strike rate, but I don't have confidence in them, and truth is, I fished them for countless hours over the last years and never had a strike (not even on the smaller U2 gills) and I was using pumpkinseed color in lakes where pumpkinseed is the main forage fish. I boiled two of them and they still don't run true... I'll try boiling them for a longer time... I've never bought a hard bait from Mattlures because they're too expensive and I live in Portugal... If a bait that expensive gets here I'll have to pay a huge customs tax (maybe about the price of the bait).
I'd like to try the new Hammer Tail U2, but I'll have to wait until Tackle Warehouse has them in stock, because if I buy from Mattlures website the shipping is almost as much as the bait...
Marco - I see your various posts on here as well as on the forums.....you have some fickle fish over there in Spain! I know they don't get as big as in most places as the U.S., but its still odd. I get quite a few small fish (1-3)lbs on many of my big lures. I know what you mean with the regular boot tail version of the Ultimate Gill. If left in a tackle tray they can bend and its difficult to get them straight again. I would contact Matt about the best way to re-straighten the tail (I imagine it is just to boil it longer). Cause your right, when that tail is bent they will swim off to one side. Having said that, I have gotten plenty of fish over the year on his Ultimate Gills that were a little banged up and didn't swim perfect. I never considered perfect, upright swimming action to be a factor is fish striking when so many lures employ mechanisms to purposefully swim erratic or to look injured. How is your water clarity? Even though bass can find lures in stained water I think past a certain point it just makes sense to use a lure with more thump if that water is heavily stained. His new Hammertail would definitely be an option if in fact you do have water like that. Hopefully TW sells them in the future for your shipping concerns. Of course we're just talking Mattlures here. There are so many good soft body swimbaits that thump. I've been testing the new Keitech 6.8 and its awesome just like the smaller sizes. Thanks. I live in Portugal, not Spain (just a little to the side :) ). I've been fishing swimbaits for over 12 years now and I'm able to catch between 1 and 4 or 5 fish in a year on swimbaits, with 1 of those fish over 3lb. That's not enough for me. I think the problem here is 99% of the anglers take home all the fish they catch, so, there are not many bass in these lakes. I must find lakes with bigger bass populations and more trophy bass, but there are not many left... But I want you to know that I've been getting better results, mainly by using smaller swimbaits (and I'm catching bigger bass on those than on the bigger swimbaits because I'm matching the hatch better). Last year almost broke my PB on a S-Waver 168 with a 4.96lb bass (my PB is 5lb). This year already caught a 3.8lb bass on the same size s-waver in February. This summer almost broke my PB again, but on a buzzbait (4.44lb). I'm getting close. :) Also, now I have a float tube and I'm able to fish areas that no one fishes in these smaller lakes. In the bigger lakes I can go to islands and humps that only a few boaters fish. The lakes I fish usually have a visibility between 3 and 25ft, so, they're usually pretty clear. Only at certain times some of them will get less than 1ft visibility. Even in the crystal clear lakes, the biggest followers that I get on swimbaits are usually 2lb bass. Thanks again for your answer and hope you catch a new PB this year!

In bluegill form? For hard lures the Jackall Gantarel and Gatarel Jr. For line through options the Savage Gear 3D bluegill (4", 5" or 6"). In terms of weedless, the Huddleston bluegill. Also, for weedless are the brand new Imakatsu Javallon Gills. Jig hook soft bait.....Mattlures Hammer Tail.

Hey Jemeel - the guy who made them totally got out of the business. Interestingly, a few months ago he made a post where he was selling all his original molds, as well as detailed instructions on the whole process he used to make his lures...step by step. Basically, he was selling his "system" so that even if he wasn't making them, his designs could continue to be made by someone else. I don't know if he actually found a buyer though.

James smith Ya got me! Totally gave this product a free pass....no critical evaluation here. Sarcasm over. Since 2012 I have had 53 offers from companies ranging from the ever present Mystery Tackle Box, to Deeper Fish Finder, KastKing, and a host of both large and small lure manufacturers. All of which I have politely refused free gear from. Matt's products are the only lures I have ever accepted for review. I have owned his products years before ever making a video on them and its an honor to be able to review his work. Even so, if you watched the video in full you would have noticed I mention the potential detractions....namely the paint chipping and price to play.
Hate to seem like I'm arguing here because I'm not. Just sayin....from seeing this bait swim and seeing my cheapo H2O express swim then yes....you guys are right....there is a huge difference....the H2O express has MUCH better action. The Mattlure being "custom" whatever doesn't change that fact. Sorry. Again. I hate to be that guy. Just pointing out what I am seeing.
Totally "Outside"....I hear ya and agree. Preferred swimming action, like art, is in the eye of the beholder. No one can truly say the action of one lure is better than another....its all opinion. What isn't opinion though its the size, weight, robustness of hardware, and durability.
My Hardgill is arguably the most proven hard bluegill bait on the market. This magnum version has the same "exaggerated unnatural" action as its little brother. The point is not to make a bluegill that is swimming naturally. The point is to cause a large bass to strike it. I have obseverd many times where bass and bluegill are near each other and not hiding from or eating each other. However once you hook one of those bluegill what happens? The bass instantly become interested and often times will crush the fighting, thumping, bluegill. The bait is designed to look extremely realistic and trigger bites. It thumps hard on purpose and gets bit because of it.

Don't believe the hype $1 spinner baits at wal mart got me a 6 lbs 4 lbs and 3 lbs bass in 1 day.
I totally agree I have a blue an white on deck always but big baits get big bites I bout a r2s s-waver 200 and caught a nine plus in about ten minutes of fishing.. it gets big bites
i dont see how this could actually catch fish? dont bass eat bluegill from the front ? i wish he showed it actually catching fish.. at this price point you would think they would show some footage of it actually catching fish..
I had got a number of fish on it, but ironically they were all smaller fish. Bass simply don't have a problem attacking and getting their mouths around even large lures. In all honesty, the swimming action is WAY OVER EXAGGERATED and I am just certain it spooks fish away. Also, there is kind of a inconsistent objective pursued here: if your goal was to make a REALISTIC lure, then why the crazy, fake, snake action? Remember, the biggest bass is NOT the bravest, - its the smartest! That's the only way to survive so many lure going by him every day! Perfect craftsmanship but wrong objectives, in my opinion.
Thanks for the comment man. I agree on some points, but differ on others. In my opinion what your referring to is a grey area. In terms of largemouth bass, it is true that the vast majority of the biggest fish (on record) have come on soft lures. (Mike Gilbert's 17lb I believe is the current largest on a hard lure - Hinkle Shad-). But, large is relative. In just one day of field testing it Ryan Perry (who has the other review of this lure here on RUclips caught a 6lb+ and a 8lb+)....again....on his first day out with it. Butch Brown has caught literally over 100 bass over 10lbs on teh Deps 250 Slide Swimmer. Now, its action is different than this Magnum, but in terms of it being exaggerated it is just as much....more so. Nothing in the water swims remotely close to the wide "S" action of the Deps (or other wide glide baits), and yet they are responsible the past few years for many of the largest bass being caught. While the ABSOLUTE biggest bass (17lbs and up) may have a track record of not falling for hard baits with erratic action, tons of fish in the 5-10lb class are caught every year on baits like these and for most anglers that is a trophy fish of the biggest type.

Your first statement is incorrect. Just as I will admit the Hudd is the most proven swimbait ever, there are plenty of others that know of my Hardgill. However I don't care much what other lure manufactures think. I kind of care what normal bass fisherman think but not that much. What matters to me is what swimbait fisherman think. What trophy hunting bass fisherman think. Go on a swimbait page and ask opinions on which swimbaits are the most proven and you will get opinions from guys who fish swimbaits and target trophy bass from all over the country and mostly NOT from prime waters. There are a lot of swimbaiters back east. One more thought. It is easy for me and other bait makers to design a swimbait that swims in a natural motion, but what good is that if it doesn't produce? The key is to design an action that triggers strikes. Have you seen any of the current glide baits? their action is the most unnatural that I can think of and they have been probably the hottest producing style of swimbait the last few years. I design my baits to get BIG bites. I don't care about average sized fish. I get asked all the time to make smaller versions to catch smaller fish and my answer is NO. I think you are missing out. You should try a real made in the USA swimbait for yourself and see if you start catching bigger bass. You don't have to buy mine if they are over your budget. Just don't make the common mistake of buying cheap junk baits and then saying swimbaits didn't work for you.
piaoliang everything you wrote is wrong. Do you actually think before you type? Spooks fish away? The bait has been out for maybe a month and I have seen a ton of pictures of fish caught on this bait from guys who just got it. It obviously works! How many manufacturers would agree? In the swim bait world there are a few baits that are the industry standard that all similar baits are compared to. The Hudd for soft trout, The Deps 250 for glide baits, and the Matt lures hardgill for bluegill baits. This is common knowledge. You think only wealthy guys fish these baits in prime lakes? You couldn't be more wrong. Most of us have regular jobs and we like fishing these baits because we have caught enough small bass and have realized that these baits catch the biggest bass in the lakes we fish. In regular public lakes. Their opinions are based on results not speculation like yours. About the only thing you got right was the exaggerated action except it has have proven to be a fish catcher. Most swim bait fisherman are fishing super pressured clear water lakes. You go ahead and use your lettuce!! lol . Your clueless.
The last punk is dumb. Who buys $150 lures with a regular job? These baits don't catch the biggest bass, easily confirmed by state record facts and plenty of youtube videos. Just sears 10 lb bass and watch first 10 videos. 0 of them were with hardgill. It's OK to be dumb, but you initiated offensive language and I am done with this. Incorrect Will. Out of my 108 uploads 4 video's were of products I accepted from manufacturers. What you don't see is the estimated 40+ product offerings I have declined since my channels inception. Just last week I got another and I politely declined. The 13 Fishing reel and rod, as well at the Mattlures Strong Shad and Magnum Gill are the only products I have accepted. I am honored to work with Matt as for many years his product offerings were some of my very favorites. Likewise, with 13 fishing I was genuinely excited about a new manufacturer offering swimbait rods and reels. Also, please don't assume that because I have accepted these products that I give them a free pass and a glowing review. I you watch my 13 fishing video's in their entirety I think its obvious that I provide their strengths and weaknesses and offer a solid, but not incredibly praiseworthy analysis. I strive to be informed, thorough, and comprehensive in my reviews. I would ask you do the same in providing feedback/criticism.

No doubt they are a great place to start. But, in terms of construction, durability, and in the case of this Magnum lure, size.....there is NO comparison. 3.5" and 5/8oz VS 7-3/8" and 4oz. Plus 5 sink rates to choose from. This lure's size and design is purposeful for one thing...catching giant bass. That H2O express is small enough that sub 1lb fish will hit it all day. Again, a great starter swimbait at a super price....but in no way comparable to the Magnum.
A tiny injection molded cookie cutter mass production machine painted bait vs a hand made, custom painted, individually tuned and tested, 4 oz swimbait with a much more realistic paint job and quality stock hardware. Like Carl said, there is no comparison. The only one up the H20 has is price. Obviously not everyone can afford these types of lures. Heck, I'm not going to shell out 110 for this anytime soon. But in the custom swimbait world you really do get what you pay for with most bait makers.
