Difficult to disagree with anything Anton says when the reality is that no other guitar player on earth has come close to his level of alternate picking.
Playing at the beginning is insane! Would LOVE to see a part 2 to your universal technique looking at John Petrucci, Michael Romeo, Jeff Loomis, Rusty Cooley... so many players with amazing picking styles who could use the Anton analysis
If I only have to pick one, I take Vinnie Moore!

I really enjoy following this video exchanges, thank you Anton and Justin! For a long time, it seems to me that successful electric guitar players made up their technical skills based on their intuitions and luck, they basically invented them without having any reference of the past to lean on.
I think that in general classical musicians are much closer to the scientific approach, also thanks to hundreds of years of evolution, compared to the relative short lifespan of electric guitar.
Unfortunately, I can't afford Anton's course for the moment, but I'm looking forward to follow this channel to grab all the information I can, to have a reliable source to help me understand how pick technique can be rationalized to make it possible to more people to be efficient with it

You always talks about technique but what about talk 'bout composition? I even would like you to analyze the technique of legato players like Holsdworth, or hibryd or SWYBRYD players like Marshall Harrison, talk about he rhythm guitar, and about acoustic masters like Paco de Lucía and Django Reinhardt, and classical guitar like Antonio Lauro. Hey Anton, awesome video as always. Random question, but have you ever had any injuries from playing guitar? I assume not, but I know a lot people who have, and it could be a factor of poor technique or simply just doing a particular for too long causing the tendons to give in.
Great video, i really like and see the points both of them make, glad to have these two to pass some knowledge unto us. I would like to ask you guys a question, its about the classical x blues position discussion: i watched Anton's video on the subject and it bugged me a little, i usually play technical stuff such as necrophagist, obscura and so on. I have to tap arpeggios very often and i find it hard to do the string huge tappping skipping arpeggio runs properly, the same with sweep/tapping arpeggios, while in blues position, when im on classical position i feel i have more accuracy, strength, stamina and reach. What you guys think?

I watched the original 2 hours long video (after Justin's reaction) and definitely got to re watch it again. Missed a lot of stuff in the first watch , it's a long and detailed analysis and is too much to digest. I'm a crappy guitarist myself and im desperately looking for ways to "work smart". Hi Anton, i have to say that you are the only person from internet, that really made my technique progressing after many years of stucking and bad habits of playing. Finally what i do is repetitive, even the things you say in videos on your channel or with DimaHudojnik interview are enough to understand so many things. You said, that the purpose of this 2 hour long video wasn't to criticism other players technique, but to show, that playing things they play is possible without effort, and it's now an accessible knowledge. But i understand Justin too, because if you say things like 'except for Jason, Jason is brave' or 'Martin is affraid of outside picking so much' it may sound like criticism 🤔
Thanks for kind words, but regarding the last part I disagree with that. There are people who're never afraid of doing certain mistakes and people who are really afraid to do even a single one and it's just a different psychological character, that's it
I love Anton's take on Paul Gilbert. I've heard that backstory many times regarding different players that are just "natural talents" or "blessed with technique" but obviously these guys all spent countless hours practicing to get to that level. Using his analogy from the last few minutes of the video, maybe it's true with football players or gymnasts that are born with certain physical advantages, but guitarists actually have to practice technique to be able to pull them off at such a high level. Those stories are fun, but not realistic. Reality is what Weezer's guitarist/vocalist said in a guitar interview many years ago about Yngwie: "Sure I practice Yngwie licks for hours every day in hopes that I can play like that one day, but it sounds like shit when I try to do it full speed, so that's why I never try to play like that on our records." Anton has that kind of honesty in describing the world of guitar. Thank you Anton, you are a treasure to the guitar community.
I wouldn't say it's true with football players and gymnasts, I have no doubt Ronaldo and Messi spent their entire life developing all the qualities that they have. Strategy, technique, traps for rival players, experience. In some way probably amount of F and S motor units really matters for speed, but it's not always about speed. Messi isn't the fastest player in the world, but combination of strategy and technique makes him better (mostly like speed in guitar playing. There're players who are faster than PG, but he's a lot cleaner, which makes him so special).
The same thing with Gymnasts I guess. It's still pure sport, just like guitar technique.
@@AntonOparinENG I agree. I should've used different examples. I was referring to, for example, how Shaquille O'Neal dominated the NBA for years almost exclusively based on his natural height and strength advantage, or how Bo Jackson dominated the NFL and college football (not soccer) simply by being faster and stronger than everyone around him (he claims he never practiced or worked out either!). Of course all of these athletes have some level of skill they acquired through training, but certain physical advantages can be found throughout most great players it seems. The real question is, how many hours of practice have you put in to be able to play Paganini pieces with such clarity, and without looking at your guitar?! You're the best Anton...keep up the great work.

It can be bent whenever you need to change the attack and the time the pick is passing through the string. it will make a bit of a shuffling kind of sound which might increase the clarity of each note on a certain guitar tone. It's bad to not control it, change it on separate notes instead of full parts of solo and have it in a picking motion while practicing. Yeah, that might be dangerous for a sync if done wrong

20:28 Thank you for illuminating this. Guthrie has confused a lot of people. In many interviews, when asked about how he used to practice, he always says "I just put on a record and played along with it, trying to play what I hear in my head." And he claims that he didn't do exercises. I get his intent - he is trying to get people away from being mindless shredders. But at the same time he hasn't been honest about his practice regimen
I think like Yngwie, Guthrie used to practice things that sounded musical to him and not the typical 123 123 123
They also come from a time where guitar players used to work on vibrato and phrasing

Really trying to mimic your right hand when I play, as I find my right hand is the issue more than my left. Tough though because your hand seems soooo relaxed it's hard to copy.

If you two guys got Roy Marchbank together in the same room to jam....
Marchbank can do realy, realy fast tremelo picking, but it is not controled at all when playing lines. The super fast lines he plays are all chromatic or simple scaler stuff and those are often not in sync.
I realy like his melodic slower stuff, but his super fast stuff is more a gimmick then controled picking and melodicaly not very interesting to me.
Anton is on a whole different level.
Super controled very fast picking, even with those big stringskips. There are no resctrictions in what he can play in whatever tempo.

What do you think about making a review on the Buckethead music and techniques? Looks like they are friends with Paul Gilbert in terms of technique but his music is something very different from everything I've listened before.
My recommendation is to check his little 2 shows tour in 2023. For example this song:

I'm not a big fan of his crazy shredding stuff but his riffs, melodies, soul touching dissonant chords, progressions, alternate pickings style, crazy slides - ahh, they are amazing!

I am really glad you are getting the views man, but there is really no issue here: the players mentioned did the best they could with what they had. But now information is so easily obtainable that you see a new and very young generation with very high technical skills (musicality is another subject lol) some at the level of those established players. And I do think that those that decide to learn from you will achieve and surpass their goals even faster, since they will be learning in a scientifically proven way. I think frustration is getting in the way of some LOL If I wasn't so old, I'd be devouring your courses! Keep it up!
Noo need that, I mean you are the best picking out there we rest all just normal people that try study 8 hours at day to do some yngwie solos...

@@MsDavo123 because most people don't hear details as pros, plus cognitive errors. They live in black and white world where more famous = better technique or good music with fast playing = better technique. In reality it's not like that, the world is more complicated)

I wonder if you've watched the new breed of players... like Bastian Martinez, or Stephen Taranto. Their techniques seem to yield a very specific sounding result...and it's a different approach to yours.

@@Andreorsel this is debatable to me, I would have to see Anton covering some of the complex Stephen taranto lines. Most of what I’ve seen from Anton is linear scalar stuff, not a lot of large interval leaps and non linear lines. Not saying he can’t, just saying I haven’t seen it.
You said you're not doing pickslanting but... You're rotating your forearm to do string switches... Naturally, given that your fingers are static, as you rotate the forearm, the slant of the pick follows. So you're doing "pickslanting", even if you don't name it as such :P
That said, the slant of the pick is probably the wrong thing to focus on when learning, what we should focus on is the motion, i.e. rotating the forearm at the correct moment to do a string switch. And in Troy's newer materials in the last few years the motions are the main focus, not the pickslant, which is just a side effect.
I didn't say I don't do any slanting, i said I don't do it Troy's way and he calls it "pick-slanting", I just said it that way so that people wouldn't think that I'm doing what Troy's calling "pick-slanting". My approach is different and that's why I don't use that term.
@@AntonOparinENGEven Troy Grady says he regrets popularising the idea of “pickslanting” because it is a red herring that doesn’t actually teach people how to use proper motions.

Not anymore. Only full bundle, cause my technical approach is like a chain. If one part is off, everything else won't work the way it should. Full thing works great, but single parts are almost pointless

Why should there be any doubts on the things you are saying?
If there would be someone who could pick at your extraordinary level and achieved such with a different approach and disagree with some of the things you are saying, then yes. But the fact is, there isn't anyone!
You are the king and therefore there should be no doubts about anything you are saying!
