  • Gil's Arena Battles Over Basketball's BIGGEST Rookie as Gilbert Arenas & The Gil's Arena Crew debate who will have the bigger impact between Victor Wembanyama & Caitlin Clark when the dust settles on their rookie seasons. While many think the Iowa phenom is already changing the WNBA thanks to her Nike deal & popularity, Gil argues that the 2 superstars are NOWHERE CLOSE when it comes to roles in changing the game.
Gil’s Arena premieres every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:30am PT / 2:30pm ET.

If women themselves watched the WNBA, the media rights would bring in a boatload of money. Women need to support women's sports if they want female athletes to be better valued

They keep trying to shoe horn in other players when talking about Caitlin Clark or JuJu Watkins. This ain't about talent, this is about popularity. This would be like when Bird, Magic, and Jordan came into the league, and people kept talking about Wilt, Bill and Oscar or let's talk about Kareem and Pistol Pete they're great too. There is much more room to move the women's game, so it's not really a fair comparison. In terms of impact on their respective leagues, Caitlyn should have the bigger impact. In terms of individual player legacies, that favours Wemby as he has great skill along with freakish physical gifts, whilst Caitlyn has great skills but a pretty standard physical profile for a WNBA player.

Once she starts playing we won’t care as much as we do now cause she will be playing a lot and it won’t be that special to us anymore. Gil has a point. When we were young and in high school, we followed the guys our age a lot closer. When I got a little older I began to appreciate Kobe so much more, but for me it was Lebron. I remember him at St Vincent St Mary, playing Carmelo, the Slam magazine covers. I wasn't checking for Tim Duncan, Shaq, etc. I knew they were good, but I was watching people I related to. JuJu def has that appeal. Caitlin Clark is an aberration. She popped because she plays in such a unique way that we all had to pay attention, but no one cared until she was winning and hitting shots from the logo. There have been many great female college players, none of them played like that in the game so none of them had major recognition or support from fans. It's similar to Carmelo at Syracuse or Steph at Davidson, we didn't know until we knew...once we did though, they had a fan base. Caitlin is the same way.

If we are judging impact solely on the basis of money made then Gil is right but because the question was about IMPACT it's definitely Caitlin Clark...it's easier to impact a smaller culture and company than a bigger one...of Wemby doesn't exist the NBA is pretty much unaffected. Caitlin Clark is already changing the way the media and everybody is looking at Women's basketball. It's actually not that close. Unless she completely flops in the WNBA, that shit is gonna change.

If 75 percent of first round players end up in the G league, then one and done doesn’t benefit the basketball business. NFL does it right and that’s why you can get talents in multiple rounds. Contracts were raised when college players like Magic, Bird, Jordan, etc made the league popular.

But I've followed A'ja for a couple of years. Two years ago when I typed in A' in google, I got all kinds of weird results. Type in A' now, and google already fills it in with A'ja Wilson. • @ForbiddenTechniqueTV

Well idk if Lexie made the greatest argument. Because gill technically would be right because wemby’s numbers of impact has been greater than Clark. 4th highest jersey sales in the NBA year one after Steph, Lebron, and Tatum. Third most viewed player on social behind Lebron and Steph. International fanbase. Gill was accurate that spurs valuation increase and Spurs also 34% jump and viewership and the NBA as a whole has had one of its biggest jumps in viewership in a while as a whole. That’s Wemby’s impact on the much larger NBA.
However if Lexie argument her point of Caitlin Clark’s impact relative to it’s current state than she would be right. Clark has had increases which include 8x the viewership on the draft. Over 307% increases of tickets sold of fever tickets although they did start at 4200, it’s still impressive relative to where it began. Even though Wemby sold out a summer league ever has happened before with about 17k, increased like that on the women’s game hasn’t happened before. Clark’s jersey has been fanatics most sold jersey of all time so that does move the needle. Her jersey outsold the cowboys jersey sales last year. She demand is forcing the move of a number of team arenas which is also unprecedented so again Lexie would be right “relative” to where the WNBA was before.
So if you want to say impact with actual numbers of viewership and value Wemby would take the edge but if you say impact relative from the start of the leagues value, Clark takes that by a landslide.
