"I resigned from The Intercept today in order to pursue a new kind of journalism here on Substack, one more hard-hitting than what’s possible in the corporate world. The Intercept has been taken over by suits who have abandoned its founding mission of fearless and adversarial journalism, and I can’t continue in an environment where fear of funders is more important than journalism itself. On a brighter note, though, I’m leaving DC to move back to Wisconsin, excited to embrace independence both in my journalism and from the Washington bubble.
The reason so much of the news media sucks is they aren’t writing for you. They’re writing for their sources in Washington, for the industries they cover, for rich people, and for fancy awards committees. Just take a look at the ads they run: for investment banks, defense contractors, oil companies. Unless you’re in the market for any of these products, they aren’t writing for you."

The real reason he left is about the hit piece he wrote smearing whistle-blower David Grusch, the former liaison for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the National Reconnaissance Office on the Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (U.A.P.) Task Force that Congress established.
In his official duties, Grusch, who held the highest security clearances in the Federal government under his Title 50 authorities and who had been read into more than 2,000 special-access programs, conducted formal interviews with more than 40 high-ranking officials with high security clearances who said that they were part of a compartmented special-access program that was capturing and reverse-engineering materials and technologies from non-human intelligences (N.H.I.).
He demanded to be read into said program, but he was illegally denied. And, he asserts that he suffered reprisals for his efforts.
He filed a formal complaint with the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community who opened an investigation, found the allegations "credible and urgent," in his words, and referred Grusch to Congress where he gave more than eleven and a half hours of closed-door classified testimony, and other evidence, to the intelligence committees and who provided the House of Representatives with unclassified sworn testimony, under oath and under the penalty of perjury, in a public hearing last year.
Grusch asserts that a rogue element within the military-industrial complex has been operating this program across the public and private sectors illegally and without Congressional oversight by abusing carve-outs from this oversight in the Atomic Energy Act of 1954.
Last year, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced the U.A.P. Disclosure Act of 2023, which passed the Senate but which was inexplicably gutted by key House Republicans before being included in the annual defense-appropriations bill.
The pending legislation defined non-human intelligences and referred to them 22 times, and the pending legislation also made abusing the carve-outs in the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 in order to conceal N.H.I.-related programs explicitly illegal.
The Atomic Energy Act of 1954 is the reason that the Department of Energy is the nexus of the cover-up, and Klippenstein's father is highly placed within that department.
Klippenstein's father even studied, and published research on, life in the atmosphere of the moon, Titan.
Klippenstein admits that he was fed information from members of the Intelligence Community and the Department of Defense in order to write the hit piece smearing David Grusch, and, presumably, these individuals are some of the same people Grusch has accused of exacting reprisals against him. And, presumably, Klippenstein is on the payroll of the public-private organization (operating mainly within other organizations) in order to maintain the secrecy and to discredit any information about the operation through Intelligence Community tradecraft.
Grusch, himself, has said that this rogue element has "a sophisticated disinformation campaign," and journalist Leslie Kean has said that her sources have told her that this campaign's budget is larger than the budget of the capturing and reverse-engineering of the N.H.I. materials and technologies.
Why is "The Young Turks" lacking objectivity with regard to Klippenstein? He is making fools of you.
A little bit of research into his background is all anyone needs to know in order to realize that he is slimy, duplicitous, and manipulative.
I've been hearing claims that the government is hiding alien technology, and even the bodies of aliens, for all my adult life (I'm 77.) The latest alleged UFO whistleblowers are Luis Elizondo and your David Grusch. Why do you suppose no one has ever produced a piece of alien hardware or a sample of tissue from an alien body -- or even clear video of an alien spacecraft? The simplest answer is that no one has ever produced real evidence because no one HAS real evidence.

I used to follow the intercept, but they lost me maybe ten years ago. Whatever change they made a year ago didn't make it more enticing. I agree that we are generally experiencing issues with top heavy management and administration. Happening also at universities. Maybe ken could write about that. What is the perceived motivation for doing that?
The truth is that ken jumped from a sinking ship that obviously isn't going to make it, as Cenk point out. He decided to make a dramatic exit and advertise his new substack.

As someone with no particular talent, but who’s pretty good at administrative stuff like business analysis and statistics, I’ve ended up in countless bullshit jobs that shouldn’t exist. I’ve given up adding to the problem and am only working with animals from now on.. honest physical work that actually needs to be done.

The one thing I did achieve was financial security for myself- used to call my wage the ‘big dole’ - government paying me lots to do nothing as opposed to very little to do nothing (under pressure) like standard welfare.
My last work was as a handmaiden/estate agent for cats but I’ve moved to a rural area for family and am about to start working with Australian native animals (which will involve continuing to be an estate agent for colonisers favourite four legged mass murderers).

I don’t know how much you know about Australia’s immigration system. Basically, I did less, worse than nothing. The better I was at what I did the more trouble I made. Better systems of surveillance, control, detention mean more of all those things. Identifying a risk manufactures an identified risk and a whole lot of work, etc etc
I took the job - lots of roles, one contract - to change the culture and found a whole lot of people just like me doing things we didn’t necessarily believe in, protecting ourselves with the mantra that it was better we did it than someone who actually did believe in it.
It’s true I learned a lot. I don’t judge people in those jobs. When I was in the trap, I was in the trap, until I had enough money to get out of it.

I’ve always liked Ken but it seems like he’s being overly critical of the intercept in an insanely difficult position. Everyone else in independent media is hurting and doing something similar. Maybe they shouldn’t have hired all those extra people/general counsel, but they were trying to solve the problem by doing that.

Who or What is Intercept? I listen to a lot of News, Young Turks, Ben Shapiro, Breaking Points, Rising, Fox News, Megan Kelley, I never of Intercept, I'll have to check it out .
They have been excellent for years. I don't think the current execs are editing stories to mislead, but are more killing stories that are 'inconvenient'. So I don't think one has to worry about being lied to, but more that you just won't see all the stories you would have otherwise.
