    One important aspect I would like you folks to talk about deals with wind. Far too often, design and look, outweigh usefulness. The best example is riding at highway speed and turning your head to do a blind spot check (lane change). With some helmets (for example, my Arai Quantum X), nothing happens. You can turn head and there are no issues. With some other helmets you turn your head at highway speed and the wind grabs the helmet and you feel like your neck is being snapped. If you are going to talk about helmets fit, finish, quality, features are all important but if you can't wear it because is act like an uncontrolled sail, then the helmet is useless (other than looking good on your shelf). Same goes for the vents if they funnel water like spigot. Functionality should be as important.

      My first helmet was the Icon Airflight I picked up in 2019. On my HD Softail with no windscreen, if I turned to far back too look at highway speeds, several times I had the wind open the visor pulling my head back. I had the helmet less than a year and replaced it because of this.

      Toughest part about speaking on how helmets handle wind is that it’s completely subjective to rider height and motorcycle choice. I’ve had helmets that were a dream to wear on some ADV bikes, but horrific on my nakeds (and vice versa).

    I'm curious what the criteria used in the comparisons are. Weight? Safety? Wind noise? Material / Material quality? Best dealer mark up? Looks? What were the options considered in each category? I'd really like to trust these reviews, since RevZilla has access to so many brands / models, and have much more knowledge about these things than most people (me included). As it is though, I don't know how closely your criteria match to what makes sense to me. Also, there's a good chance that there's a lot that users could learn about the gear selection if the criteria used are on full dislpay. I'll suggest getting Project Farm to consult in your testing and reporting methodologies.

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  Год назад

      All full face helmets have their limitation by design with ventilation. However if you are open to different styles the BEST venting would be something with an open eye-port for sunglasses instead of a shield. Something like the Moto-3 from Bell etc. Definitely a certain style, but that huge eyeport is a giant inlet for Air at speed. Anything that removes the shield from the equation (also something like the Biltwell Gringo w/o the shield) is your best bet. No-shield = biggest vent port on the market.

      I can confirm this. I have one with mips inside, unfortunately I was rear ended last year waiting to take a left turn on a rural highway. As you can imagine getting shitwhipped 15 feet into the air there is a lot of forces against you and the helmet worked phonemically. The helmet fits snug and I was hit pretty hard and I found my glass's shoved up onto the top of my fourhead. Other than the 2 downsides its still reasonably priced for an ADV helmet. Also if you wear glass's there's no channel inside for glasses.

    I wore nothing but Arai Corsair's this century. Last year I bought a HJC HPHA 11 Pro and it's the best helmet I ever had. It's like half the price of a Corsair, lighter, better ventilated, cutouts for eyewear is larger, bigger ear pockets, quieter and the quality is more refined with a badge on the front instead of a cheap sticker, the vent knobs are rubber coated aluminum, ect. And it comes with a tinted shield for even more money saved. And you can swap that shield in like 10 seconds. Swapping shields on the Arai is a PIA no matter how many times you've done it. And eventually you will break one of those stupid sideplates.

    • @DannigBB6
      @DannigBB6 Год назад +4

      There's too many variables with noise and aero. Your height, your seating position, your bike's wind protection, and even how well your helmet fits can change how noisy and how well a helmet can cut through the air. Schuberth claims to be the quietest, but I've met people who used them and said it was the loudest helmet they ever used. The thing I found that helped the most with noise and aero was proper fit. Using a helmet that was the wrong shape for my head (My head is super round oval) caused the helmet to move up and down and introduced so much wind noise. I don't trust videos that harp on how quiet a helmet is, because their experience probably won't be the same as mine.

    • @scrappycanuck6058

    Scorpion R1 Air user here... 100% agree with the whole Airfit things here. And definitely how the helmet vents best is when on an attack position on track. However, the Shields are not super well done and they do tend to break-off pinlock insters. I broke 5 pegs before I decided that enough was enough and deal with the fog the old-fashioned way. Also watch out for fit and finish of the helmet when you buy one. They have a broad QC standard and you can get unlucky with the rubber gaskets.

      FIM was a category last year and instead of just rinse/wash/repeat with the pics, we went with the top helmets we still see whenever someone is at the track or looking for safety etc. DOT and FIM combination helmets have been SERIOUSLY lacking though so we hope manufacturers start bringing those models over here more often. While it is a great standard, pricing and availability still need to be factored in. If the most protective helmets are so rare in the US and so costly, people won't buy them regardless.

      Are you talking about the Scorpion? If so, something to keep in mind is that track day organizations and racing leagues don't thing SNELL is as big of a requirement as it used to be. ECE helmets, FIM helmets, and even some just DOT helmets are acceptable at the track. People might not agree with that, and I personally always look for more than just DOT but I don't think SNELL is the end-all-be-all.

    I met a guy at motogp last year that had a nice Arai helmet and we got to talking about it. He showed me all the paint chips on the front and said he'd never buy an Arai again. Said he's only had the helmet a couple of months and tried getting Arai to swap it out for him but they wouldn't. The paint was so thin and bugs / rocks from normal riding just destroyed the cheap thin paint. Looks great sitting back about 10 ft but when you're holding it up close it just scratches so easily. I always think about that when I see Arai helmets now.

    • @patrickmchugh8039
      @patrickmchugh8039 Год назад +2

      IMHO, all touring helmets need drop down sun visors in order to make them more comfortable riding all day. Upright riding position (touring) vs 3/4 or Tuck (Sport) is the main difference though. Some helmets are better for ventilation and viewports in the upright, others are better in the full tuck. You can make any helmet do anything, but its about what it was designed for and what will work the best for each application that gives it the distinction.
