Making a 1940's Summer Suit Jacket (& Skirt!) - Summer Sewing 2019

- By popular demand, my last project for my summer sewing series is one of my princess seamed cotton twill summer jackets! This one is made from a lovely inky black organic cotton twill from Moodfabric.com, and with a matching pencil skirt of course. This video took ages in every respect, to film, to edit, to export! So I am sorry it is up a bit late, please forgive me.
Also, who's ready for spooky season...I mean autumn. What would you like to see me sew this next season?
And as always, yes I sew over pins, yes I am kinda sloppy with lazy zippers--I'll sew my way, you can sew your way, and we will all make cute stuff mmkay? Mmkay :)

Here is my tip for pre-washing - i put the fabric folded in pillow case / cushion cover and wash it inside of it. most times the fabric wont unfold and i don't have to face ripped pieces. PS. i only use one pillow case, already checked, not bleeding colors (you can use white too), so i am not worried about color change.

I find your way of filming and editing this much more useful than the fast paced, overedited videos one usually sees with tutorials.

Kayla Scheiner I also appreciate that phrasing! I was born and identify as a woman - doesn’t mean curves are exclusive to people who identify as such. Bodies come in all sorts of ways, and so do people. (And thank goodness. If there were only two types of people, how boring that would be!)

Loved the finished view: wig, scarf, spider brooch and all.
I’ve been sewing for 63 years ( I know!! - still learning) and have always sewn over my pins - can’t see why this may be an issue.
Once sewing was a cheaper way to have nice clothes.Now it’s a way to have better quality fabrics and perfect fit. I like the whole process from choosing the fabric, drafting, machining and finishing by hand.

Thank you SO. VERY. MUCH. for leaving in the rant about clipping rounded seams and leaving raw edges. It’s something that’s always confused me, and I haven’t tried it out of terror of unraveling. The information you provided was *exactly* what I needed to understand how it works, and it was so helpful to know you haven’t experienced any damage on your cotton twills (though I suspect linens and silks might be a different story). Also, every sewing room is messy! It’s part of the creative process, but I definitely wouldn’t be offended if you made a Clean With Me video where you sorted, cleaned, and organised your sewing room! It’s always fun to peek at what processes and tools other people incorporate into their art. Which reminds me: you mentioned you usually press with steam and your hand... have you considered a pressing block or tailor’s clapper? I’ve used them a couple times and absolutely love the sharp edges it gives me. Plus, my main career is massage therapy, so it saves my hands from burns so I can work the next day!
Thank you Beatrice! I need more pressing tools it's true! I just have my little tailors ham. As for burns, at my day job I have to use a 350 degree heat press and am constantly burning myself (clumsy by nature), so I am quite used to it eek! I refuse to slow down so I get little burns all the time I'm afraid, not the best.

Apart from all the wonderful explanations on pattern modification, I think the best tip in there for me is: sometimes you just have to GO TO BED! Ugh. But of course, I never go to bed before I reach that "am I going insane?" moment...

BRILLIANT!!! This was an AWESOME watch. I'm a newbie on your channel and I LOVE all 1940's dress-wear. I can already see myself making this suit. Your tutorial is very well explained and I was able to follow you through on all counts of changes and additions to your pattern. 1940's and 50's is my favorite fashion era. Although I do not completely wear it, I have some dresses that I've purchased. One thing for sure... You have completely convinced me to make the change in my wardrobe for good. I have to to thank for that. I know it will take me a long while to make a complete wardrobe for the different seasons because I do not work due to disability, however, "slow and steady wins the race. There's no shame in using a reference book as intended. Imagine how rough of a time the historical costuming folks would have it without the Janet Arnold and American Duchess books.
I just feel a bit bad making it available to the world I suppose, but people follow knitting patterns or recipes here on RUclips all the time I guess!

Fabulous vid: I admit to skimming a bit as will follow along properly next month sometime when my current projects are out of the way. Like other followers here, I too need to make myself some blocks first. I'm a similar shape to you and have always struggled to get a well-fitting princess line pattern so I'm looking forward to working along with you on this vid to hopefully address this. Finished suit looks fabulous: the close fitting through the waist suits your proportions so stunningly - be careful going out in this one you'll be stopping the traffic with those curves, ai ai ai! Ah yes I can imagine that would indeed work quite well!
The reason for the adjustments around the bust on the front side pattern piece is to soften the shape of the bust point. This aligns with modern bra shapes. If you wanted a more 50s bullet bust you wouldn't do those adjustments.
Oh no, you committed the cardinal sin of leaving seams raw and no lining in the suit! 😀 After sewing for as long as I have I still have periods of doubt, but that is a part of the territory in sewing. You are always learning and becoming better at the craft even experienced sewers. Sometimes happy accidents occur. Mock ups are great test grounds as you demonstrated. Love the topstitch detailing. You did a fabulous job and a lovely choice of fabric.

In 4H many years and vintages ago, we were taught to stay stitch our raw edges, running a line of stitching about 1/4 in from the edge.

THANK YOU for showing all the different iterations of the mock-up? It makes me feel better as a novice that you, with all your experience, starting from a bodice block that fit you well, still needed a few rounds of modifications for fit.

I heard that the reason for men's buttons being on the right is so that when they draw their swords (with their right hands, of course), the hilt doesn't get caught between the overlapped front of the shirt. We ladies, of course, would never do something so indiscreet as draw a sword in public. We'd use our daggers, so we need our buttons to be on our dagger-hand side. 😄

Maybe you are interested in making a historical 40s hiking outfit? A tartan fitted vest and a woolen or heavy cotton hiking skirt? Since you are also into vintage traveler fashion i think it could be a cool thing.
I really wanted to make jodhpurs this year, for a full fall adventure ensemble indeed, but I don't think I'll have the budget for fabric for them this year, sometime though! I do have plaids in my stash though, and do have a vest on my to do list!

It's sculpture that has to move in some ways I suppose :)
Lots of comments, so don't know if you'll see this... but the reason it has you move the end of the dart has to do with fit and ease. If you pivot without extending the dart, it will reduce ease on the side of the bust, and open up the "beak" looking part too much, adding fullness to the seam that goes over the front of bust - also making it harder to ease in the side front to the center front pattern pieces along the princess seam when sewing. Most of those random things are done for fit and ease, but they don't usually explain in the books!

if you ever need a haloweenvideo idea you should do a vintage cleopatra costume, the makeup reminded me of how cleopatra looked in old movies. The way I was taught to make princess seams is to close all that darts creating a 3d object, then drawing the curve and cutting the pieces, making sure to have a cutting line runing through the nipple mark.

I have been walking around the shops today, and I saw a pair of vintage cotton blend gloves from the 40's or 50's, Did they do blends like that at that time? How does one know if what the vendor say's is right. I also found a pair of 40's to 50's shoes in a different shop and they looked similar to the ones that I've seen in American Duchess but with higher and slimmer heals. How could I learn to see the difference between the real deal and being a reproduction or a case of the early 80's doing that era? Also, I had changed my name on here a while back from Boss Darcie to Goth Empress because I changed my gamer handle and so switched almost all my social medias too. It's still me! Still Darcie, your neighborhood spoop! ^_^ I watch all of your videos, even if I don't always comment on them.
So so good! I watched the whole video and LOVED it. Its been a while since I did the kind of drafting and fitting like you walk through, and I loved the "refresher".
