  • Heading to a swinging wake? Today I'm making the ultimate Halloween cocktail party dress in iridescent orange taffeta and black spider web embroidered mesh dotted with sparkling black sequins. Add a giant bat wing inspired collar, or four, and the happy haunts materialize into what will be my favorite fancy dress for all future Octobers...or perhaps all year long!
The spider web mesh fabric I used: www.etsy.com/listing/1265726605

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

My Mother was an industrial sewer of leather briefcases and bags in the late 40's - early 50's, so when it was time for her to get a home sewing machine, she got an "industrial" singer in the late 50's. It was what I learned to sew on - and I honestly hated it. It was fast as hell and there was no room for error. Threading the machine was easy, and it was a beast that could sew through absolutely anything. But for a 8/9 year-old, it was way too much power. I was so happy when I part exchanged it for a "modern" Janome quilting machine in the 00's - which I love.

You've really managed to achieve the perfect combination of elegance and spookiness here -- that bat-wing collar is everything one could ask for from a Halloween cocktail dress, and the swish of the overskirt just takes it up to the next level. The spiderweb mesh was amazing inspiration and very much the icing on the cake here. Also, I agree -- this dress would look amazing in just about any other colors as well! My personal vote is always purple, but you always manage to make colors that I would never choose still look fabulous, so if you do get more of the mesh, I can't wait to see what you do with it :)

You are amazing! I dug thru my trove of patterns, ( many are from my mom after she passed). I found what I would call a basic bodice block in my size!!!!!!! I am beyond excited. I sewed my first walking skirt, by hand of course. Now need a blouse suitable for my wonderful turn of the century skirt. Nothing crazy lacy or puffy, a history bounding daily wear top suitable for a nice skirt. I have been enjoying the process of looking thru pinterest, etc for ideas. You and Bernadette Banner are my inspiration.
I don't think it really matches, but.... I will make your pirate shirt. Your directions are so clear, I believe I can do it and really be pleased to wear the result.
Bianca, you are great. A real treasure to those of us who truly want to sew..... but lack knowledge and experience.

I have a vintage singer I am dying to get to sewing on and I can’t wait to redo my room and finally have space to do all the sewing. It sadly needs some work done, she’s an electrical model but the old cast iron body so I have to find someone close who could repair it. But it got it and the sewing table with bench all for $60 at a rummage sale. Lucky me was helping set it up with my brother’s Boy Scout troop and was able to lay claim before anyone else could. I plan to refinish the table and bench with a new stain and finish plus a new cushion for the bench.
This dress is to die for, I adore the little pop of orange on the hip in the side swoosh. Maybe once I get the room redone I’ll have the room to finally settle in to draft my own pattern blocks from your videos and start making my own things. I love your videos, your voice is so soothing and is great for listening to when I am having trouble sleeping.

I could not keep the seams straight. A few years later seamless stockings came out. I have always liked stockings better than pantyhose. Everyone would stop and look you over, if you were to walk through any business here. Most young people living here today have never seen any woman dressed up so beautifully.

Perfectly spooky! Damn, this dress broke my brain, it was whole workout for it! 😂 But it ended up so beautiful, elegant and like a definition of 'halloween cocktail dress'. And about polyester, I personally hate wearing it but if you already had it then why not use it. Of course everyone would like it to be silk, but it would be ridiculously expensive and I think that buying this mesh in silk quality would be impossible.

This is a great outfit with all those details! And the extra hours were worth it! The more sewing I do the more I realise that with more knowledge and skill comes the realisation that it takes more time not less to make a garment! And its usually with less frustration than my beginning days too. Less unpicking for one!
