CONTEXT/TIP: The serpent/flower quote may be an intentional reference to the Gunpowder Plot.
The king’s escape from being blown up (no thanks to Guy Fawkes) was commemorated by a medal, which displayed *a snake concealed by flowers* . The Macbeth quote “look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under it” is a direct reference to the Gunpowder Plot, consequently foreshadowing their regicide attempt. This quote would have been understood well by the audience as Lady Macbeth echoes the image of the medal, and portrays how the two events mirror each other (both are regicide attempts).
omg thanks, im literally scavenging for wany type of context/critic that isnt overly common

Hi sir, thank you so much for these videos they are amazing! I was just wondering how many techniques should you include per paragraph because In a previous video you said to only use them were relevant but my teacher has been ramming them down our throats for the past 2 years (really High level techniques as well) and I'm kind of confused
hi, not mr salles lol, but I recommend using techniques that are relevant to the quote or reference you are making. don't try and manipulate/force the technique used in the quote if it's not there. You get marks on how good and judicious your analysis is of the QUOTE/TEXT, not how many techniques you can cram into one paragraph 😂
@@whosminou Hey thank you so much, you may not be Mr salles but you are super helpful! I'll be sure to follow that advice tomorrow :)
If you know the techniques, mention them. But don’t sweat
@@maddietenhouten2276 good luck
Will i need more quotes or if i learn these and how to analyse them will i be fine
good luck to everyone tomorrow
Hello mr salles do you have to annotated all the key scenes in depth or can you just know a few quotes from them
at this point, don't waste time annotating scene by scene if you haven't done so already lol. just revise the plot with a good amount of detail so you know what you're actually writing about. revising a few quotes from some scenes is good.
yea they really threw a curveball with how Macbeth changed didn't they, hope everyone still did well though
what L9 ideas could you talk about if the question is on appearance vs reality?
You could use “fair is foul and foul is fair” and basically say that this blurs the boundaries between good and evil, presenting the idea that what may be seen as good could really be evil in disguise. Then u could further expand this point by using the “Look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under’t”
You could talk about the role of a host and hostess as Duncan calls Lady Macbeth the "honoured hostess", while she is actively trying to kill him. A host in that time was supposed to protect their guest whereas they plot to murder Duncan and how this presents Lady Macbeth as the 4th witch or "murdering ministers". This implies that duplicity could be anywhere and Shakespeare might be trying to warn the nobility of King James, which some believed that they had more of a right to be the King of England not this random bloke from Scotland. Shakespeare was warning then about the consequences of distributing the Great Chain of Beings and also warning King James I to not trust anyone full, with this you can link to themes of Kingship and Nobility.
We doing all this with macbeths but watch it be about one of the NPCs like lennox or somat
Mr Salles can I have a blessing for tomorrows exam
sir have you seen the essay that i sent to you
Good luck guys!
Do you have to do 50 percent ont he extract when it comes to paper 1 and the other 50 on the novel as a whole? Or can i split it up not evenly and do 20 percent on the extract for example and 70 percent on the play as a whole?
It doesn’t matter how much you use of the extract but you must include something from it in your essay
@undercoversummer123 i do a long paragraph on extract and 2 on he whole and i get like 25/30
my teacher said that its better to do more from outside the play as it shows more of a in depth understanding of the play but you should still reference the extract
That’s correct
@@PersianChristianity yeah same thats what I do and normally get 26+/30
Mr salles if macduff comee up can you get marks for analysis of the name Macduff and Macbeth same at start different at the end or too farfetched?
Yes as most Scottish surnames began with Mac
@@MrSallesTeachesEnglish so can I broaden it to how there are differences in character development depending on moral endurance vs moral weakness (Macduff Is macbeths foil)
Gonna tell you all how I found the lit paper coming up tmmrw. Good luck to everyone! And as my pricipal always says, there is no luck, only determination and focus that leads to success haha. I am predicting Macbeth will be on supernatural or on women or on education. Lets see If i get it right...
Mr Salles, I am revising quotes for Macbeth and The Empress. But, I am struggling to remember these quotes for Macbeth. What is your best top tip and advice? Thanks
THANK YOU! Brilliant video again!! :D
I really like your interpretation of 'dear wife' being Macbeth truly loves Lady Macbeth and wants to spare her from his fate; in school we did it as 'dear' being patronising and reflective of the patriarchal society - Macbeth is putting Lady Macbeth in her place and she is no longer his equal, signifying the distance that has grown between them.
I like your interpretation better though, but if I talk about both (if it's relevant to the question of course!) then I'm adding layers of analysis and interpretations which is good! :)
Yes, analyse both possibilities if it is relevant
watching this as i get ready 😭
Me too😂😂😂
oh my god i’m so scared wtf
Hello Mr salles, I'm taking the English literature tomorrow and the specification is quite different. I mean it's edexcel and we will be doing for paper 1, unseen poems, seen poems and of mice and men, and I'm scared because I'm not sure how to paragraph my answers. Please please can you please TEACH me how to. Thanks 🙏🏾
Prtzel paragraph
@@JayFirth123 ok thanks
Hi,Can we inlcude different themes from the ones you mentioned if the question about a character? Please could you reply?
Ik I'm not him but yes you can ( like you link banquo to the supernatural etc?
@@kat6976 Oh ok thanks a lot
Good luck guys :)
hi sir, how much do u need to mention the extract for a grade 9? is the first paragraph enough?
I think it’s 2 paragraphs idk
if you've run out of time, you'll be fine as long as it's a substantial amount, but pick at least 2-4 quotes from it and a reference to ensure you've covered the extract. mr salles suggests writing from the beginning of the play to the end (with the extract wherever it is in the play, in between) to flesh out the full structure of the play. you can sneak the extract somewhere within your essay.
@@whosminou thanks🙏🏼
I might not do your exam board, but we’re advised to pick one quote from each part of the extract (top, middle, bottom) and some quotes embedded if possible.
is it ok its you say what scenes they are from
Yes
im so stresses cause i only started revising a few days ago and have christmas carol and macbeth on wednesday D: and i need a 6 to do the subject i want in a level
For my mock I revised twice before it and got a 6, you lol do ok if you revise
@@kat6976 thanks, for my mocks i never revised much but my teachers usually hinted at what the question would be . i guess cause it's the real exam it's extra scary lol
@@idrewagiraffethe questions have been predicted so you have some guidance
@@crazyfriend50I just hope the predictions are right, and i don't end up getting something really random like a question on macduff or something
@@idrewagiraffe what are the predicted questions? please tell me 😭
Do we have to talk about language and structure for the English lit paper 1 AQA?
I don't think so, like you could talk about it like for example A Christmas Carol where it has 5 Staves, just like in music and Dickens does this so that his reader will read the Novella aloud near a fireplace just like in ancient traditions of sharing ghost stories at Christmas and this helps to spread Dickens message about (INSERT QUESTION) instead of only one person and especially young children as it is easier teach them about morality. You could also link this to the fact that there were only 6000 printed copies of an ACC and they cost 5 shillings each.
@@IDidNotCommitWarCrimesInSerbia I’m doing Macbeth and sign of four. We just have to right about the extracts and the play in relation to theme basically? Just use context and link it back to the play/novel etc.. I’ve moved between schools cos of personal issues so I’ve been taught different boards over the last 5 years. I’m doing AQA now so I’m just wondering if we have to include it or not. Thank you!
yes
@@bejeweled13 so tomorrows Macbeth i should include the language techniques like adjectives and things?
@@YusafBashir yes, but adjectives are a bit basic, use techniques such as metaphors, pathetic fallacy, emotive language etc.
in eng lit AO2 (language and structural techniques) is worth almost 43 percent of the marks so make sure to include this
are biblical illusion a technique or context
Generally technique, however you could pair this device with other contextual ideas of which ultimately relate to the same sentiment.
it’s not an illusion, it an ‘allusion’, which means link to a different text👍

I just finished the exam, quit a curveball extract for Macbeth.
are these the only quotes we should focus on
nooo you should know a few other quotes . You could get away with knowing just these but only if the question is very easy
definitely revise other ones too
if you have not revised many before hand, then your best bet is to deeply analyse these quotes and figure out any other quotes in which go hand in hand with these quotes while also exploring differentiated themes within the play, to ultimately ensure that you are able to consolidate your knowledge across all aspects of the play.
Anyways, good luck in your exam tomorrow! :)
