Here are some interesting quotes!!
*Macbeth:*
"Fair is foul and foul is fair" - Inversion, saying we shouldnt trust appearances, a common theme in the play, Macbeth is also told to "Look like the innocent flower but be the serpent underneath it". Its almost as if he's been corrupted by the supernatural (link to context and writers intentions)
'Stars, hide your fired, let not light see my black and deep desires'- Macbeth aims to hide his intentions from god (the stars). He knows what he's intending to do is wrong, and hes worried that even thinking about doing it will not please God. Prehaps it creates the idea that Macbeth is doing this out of free will? His ambition here leads to his suffering, but it wasn't forced. He knows this is wrong yet he still does it. (Link to context/writers intentions)
"Yet i do fear thy nature"- Lady macbeth does not think Macbeth is "man enough" to commit regicide (lol), it links to the idea that Lady macbeth is occasionally seen as masculine while sometimes Macbeth is shown as more feminine, for example when he is panicking after killing duncan ("Macbeth does murder sleep") while Lady macbeth is calmer ("A little water clears us of this deed"). Prehaps its shakespears way of telling us not to overstep our roles, as Macbeth and lady macbeth do not fit into the norms of the jacobean society.
"Unsex me here"- Similar to the last one. LMB is asking dark spirits (link to supernatural and the witches) to strip her of her femininity, so she can help macbeth kill duncan and become king.
"Is this a dagger i see before me"- Macbeth hesitates, this is one of the turning points in the play, IT IS THE LAST CHANCE FOR HIM TO TURN BACK, yet he thinks it is a calling (fate? As predicted by the witches?)
"Macbeth does murder sleep"- Reflects macbeths Guilt, sleep is a symbol of peace, which macbeth purposefully disrupts after breaking the great chain of being. It reflects his mental state and marks the start of his downfall.
"Tis' unnatural, even like the deed that's done"- Proves that the great chain of being has been disrupted, the actions of macbeth have seemingly broken nature and the order of things. Shakespeare does this to warn the audience not to commit any kind of treason or overstep their place/consumed by ambition as it will only lead to chaos.
"A little water clears us of this deed"- Irony, opposes LMB later "Out damned spot! Out i say". She pushes away her guilt but is eventually consumed by it.
Those are some key quotes for Macbeth.
*A Christmas Carol key quotes:*
"Scrooge was his [...] sole freind and soul mourner"- Establishes the nature of his business partner it shows how he lived his life, mostly alone, consumed by money and it is the same path scrooge walks. Links to later "Chains i forged in life". This is not the right path scrooge should walk, we see how marley ends up.
"He carried his own low temperature [...] and didn't thaw it one degree at Christmas" - Establishes Scrooges cold and cynical nature, even at a very happy, joyous time he remains isolated and pushes others away from him.
"As Solitary as an oyster"-A very interesting quote, as it shows how scrooge is isolated and introverted, but also shows how deep down he HAS something worth saving, this is the pearl you find in oysters.
"Christmas has done me good and will do me good"- Fred is saying how Christmas has affected him, he is trying to show scrooge the light, only for him to ignore him, prehaps it DOES however awaken something in scrooge, as later we see that he finally notices marley, despite him apparently having visted many times before, but he is never seen.
"If they would rather die, they'd better do it and decrease the surplus population"- Links to the Malthus theory, the idea thay we dont have enough supplies to supply a growing population. Scrooge (a microcosm of the upper classes) shows his belief of the poor of them being prehaps lazy and unproductive, despite them being the people who uphold society. This is a belief hold by many at the time. At the same time this quote is criticising the theory, as we do not trust scrooge, due to his negative and pessimistic nature, and is further disproved later (see later quote)
"Fezziwig has spent but a few pounds"- Fezziwig is the boss Scrooge could've been, he doesnt spend much, only a few pounds, yet he brings joy to so many people. Fezziwig is shown here by the GOCP in order to show scrooge that he can be a boss that brings despair, or one that brings joy, he will loose little bit will gain much more..
"Another idol has displaced me [...] a golden one"- Scrooge is so afraid of poverty that he has become obsessed over wealth and is now consumed with greed. He has forgotten what really matters, his relationships with others, such as Bell in this situation.
"Heaped up on the floor, to form a king of throne, were turkeys [...], sausages [...], puddings."- Disproves the malthus theory, there is evidently an excess of resources.
"I see a vacant seat in a poor chimney corner"- Scrooge now understands something- the lower classes are people like bob cratchit, hard workers who do everything they can to stay alive, yet they are unable to afford basic healthcare for an innocent, kind tiny tim. The ghost of Christmas present also mocks him for this, referencing his earlier quote of the surplus population, scrooge now understands the value of life and the reality of the poor.
"Am i the man who lay upon the bed"- Scrooge is horrified, he just watched many people mock, steal and disregard this dead individual, some people are even happy because of it, he realises then that if he doesnt change he will truly die alone, just like marley, none will remember him, none will care about him, and his life will have been for nothing, only resulting in the same suffering marley has.
"He knew how to keep Christmas well"- He's changed, now he realised the error of his ways and he has now become a better person.
Hope this helps, if you did anything else i wont be able to help you (sorry)

Thank you very much as always Mr Salles, you've always been my GCSE English life support and I feel like I've learnt more from your short videos than my 2 years of GCSE study at school! thanks for all you have done and wish us luck for tomorrows exam!
I came crashing into the GCSE curriculum after a year in Canada and I am using this as supplement to my 6 or 7 months of study I have been present for. I am very poorly prepared, but i can detail the biology of salmon to a greater depth than one might expect, should that ever be relevant in English.

i dont understand his 3rd point could someone elaborate
please
Scrooge previously had little care for the well-being of the poor, especially Bob, his clerk. What he didn’t realise was the reality that Bob lived in and how he has to take care of his crippled son. When the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come takes him to the Cratchit’s household (this is after the Christmas dinner scene so Scrooge already knows Tiny Tim) where the entire family is grieving for the loss of Tiny Tim. Scrooge, over the course of time, began to feel empathy and longing for a child (especially after Belle’s scene too) so he sympathised with Tiny Tim alike the reader would. From this, Scrooge reaises Tiny Tim has died as a result of his poor wages, poor treatment of the poor, etc. and wants to change his ways. He demands the spirit to tell him if Tony Tim will live, symbolising how his character has changed as he previously would have been apathetic towards a poor, crippled boy’s death yet now feels a sense of familial love towards him and doesn’t want him to die.
Sorry if this is so long or rushed or whatever ouch!
