Bleeding varices is a condition characterized by bleeding in abnormal vessels.
    • Varices are abnormal connections between the systemic and portal circulation present in the body.
    • The system circulation takes blood to and from the heart to supply all other organs in the body, while the portal circulation drains blood from the small intestine to pass through the liver before the rest of the body.
    • The abnormal connections are weak and prone to more rupture, which is usually a medical emergency and can be life-threatening.
    • Varices commonly occur in the venous system, but they may sometimes occur in arterial or lymphatic vessels.
    • The most common site of varices is the esophagus although they can appear at other sites in the gastrointestinal such as the stomach, rectum, or around the belly button.
    • If the bleeding is not controlled fast, a person may go to shock and eventually die.
    • Serious complications such as coma, pneumonia, kidney failure, liver failure may occur even after the bleeding has been stopped.

This was hard for doctors to explain to me (around 19 years ago). No hepatitis, no drinking… it had to be the ARVs that I had been taking religiously since late 1991.
The rubberbanding was unsuccessful and had to be redone with the TIPS. Thank you Massachusetts General Hospital IR. I had no idea that my liver was so sick and the bleed happened so fast. I got on the floor and called 911. I felt very faint. While monitoring my TIPS, they found cancer and treated me twice while waiting for a liver transplant. Now 8 ½ years post op and testing HTLVIII negative, I wonder why I tested positive and was given killer toxic medications that nearly killed me and almost nobody wants to listen.

my father just died last feb. 2020 because of ruptured GE varices. He vomited large amount of blood..I was so shocked. I thought I could only see that kind of scenario in movies..We were both covered with his blood..the room became red...We were actually in the hospital when that happened.. Everything was very sudden. He just got up and went to the toilet to cough and then the coughing didn't stop..the blood came out from his mouth and nose like running water in the faucet..The last words he said was "I can't breathe" (gasping for air...I can see to his eyes that he was so scared) then he fell in my arms unconsciously..the even the nurses panicked...I and my mother was crying..The floor was like flooded with blood (literally...LOTS OF BLOOD😢😢)... Now, everytime I close my eyes, I can still remember that scenario that my father looked at me, spurting blood from his mouth and nose, gasping for air, fell in my arms..and died in arms...I Love Him so much😭😢

@S. A. He seemed so fine before it happened..Last Feb.10,2020 we even had dinner at a restaurant. We were laughing, enjoying the foods. That was the first time he spitted blood ( about half empty glass)... I was alarmed so the next day
(Feb.11) I told my mother to have my father checked to a doctor coz we thought it was his lungs... The doctor just prescribed antibiotics...The following day
(feb 12..the date he died) we allowed him to bring the car to the shop because he was so eager to customize the car and he told us he is fine..while I was in school (coz im a teacher) , he sent message to our groupchat that we must fetch him from the shop coz he spitted blood again including now from his nose... He sent photos to our gc...That time (2:00pm) I was going to my next class when I checked my phone.. As I have read it, I frantically rushed to our department, asked permission from my dept.head, told him what happened and if I can go get my father... So I hurriedly drove to get my father, but my younger brother already fetched him and brought him to our house.. When I saw him he was acting fine but I know he's not... he even opened a can of sardines then told me "oh , you're here! you're still in uniform common let's eat" ...then i told him that he must be brought to the hospital coz he was a kind of person who doesnt want to be seen like he's weak...but still, i convinced him.... so we drove for 1 hour to the hospital..we were even laughing inside the car, but i know his condition was getting serious....then as we reached the hospital (4:00pm) we brought him to the emergency room, there he was being taken care of the nurses... HE EVEN TOOK A SELFIE..he was smiling..... That night (7:00pm) he was brought to his room ( it took 2 hours for him to stay inside an isolation room before he was brought to a private room bcoz the hospital thought his condition was infectious..you know spitting blood thinking t'was TB..) Everything seemed fine..we were watching TV..laughing....then at 8:00pm, he coughed...and he wanted to spit..so i assisted him to the bathroom... as he spitted, he coughed again..and that was the time lots blood spurted from his mouth and nose ( gallons of blood) as i said, i thought i could only see it in movies😢...everything was so sudden..he fell in my arms..he died..the doctors were trying to revive him..but it was too late... It was a Sudden Massive Blood Loss..
.Pls. have your friend checked by a doctor ..I hope he will be okay..I dont know if he has the same condition like my father's...but it's not normal to just spit blood😢...i think it's still better to have him checked..My father was also alcoholic..

@S. A. he had also somewhat a bloated belly... but we didnt find it suspicious coz he always had that bloated-looking belly...but one thing that he was complaining about was the recurrence of cramp on his abdomen...on the diaphragm area and the lateral portion of his belly...

      Your comment made me cry.
It's a shame that doctor just gave antibiotics and didn't performed gastroscopy. I am amazed at that person. Must be a fake certificate doctor. Even an intern would understand the severity of the situation.
I am greatly sorry for your loss.
