- Changing the coolant on a 2002 Peugeot 406 HDi 110 with the 2.0 DW10ATED engine.
The car was not overheating, or loosing water i was changing the coolant just as a routine service item, and while i was at it i changed the thermostat also.
If there is any other things that could have been done differently please say so in the comments.

I wish all videos that explain how to fix something where as good and helpful as this one. Thanks :)
great video - thanks - felt good to be able to do this myself instead of paying a garage.
+Aby a Thanks, i have to agree haha
Nice thanks. I only did a "quick and dirty" thermostat change. Thanks for the info!
Drove and arrived at a mall, to see overheating and at 100C already on Citrn. Red Stop flashing away. Left it for a long time and drove home with no heater, con, and in neutral as much as possible , to cruise home. Wife and kids concerned but had seen this before. Got home, fan on for 20min, with water dripping out of Thermo housing. So assume its stuck in closed position. Booted up PC and watched your vid. Great thanks a lot. Will strip it out and leave it out, & get new one.May God bless you
Hi video was spot on the best thing was you never said a word, let the vid speak for its self cool
Hi, thanks for that. It is exactly what i want from the videos to get straight to the point and show how to do the repair.
Excellent, concise, no bs talk, clear sharp footage, l mean this video is nothing short of excellent
Thanks for the comment, exactly the things that I found irritating in quite a few repair videos. Glad to have received this comment.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV you are very welcome, is there any way you could make a similar video for a 307?
@@stefstef4895
I occasionally have 307s in the shed, the 2.0 HDi uses the same engine as the 406 so i never thought to make the same video as it all applies. Is there a specific engine you are interested in seeing this for?
@@peugeotCitroen2CV yes, the 1.6 gasoline, 109hp
Thumbs up for clarity. Good vid
Great Job Video is very helpful
I used a water vacuum cleaner to suck all the old anti freeze and flushing water out of the hoses, engine, radiator, etc. Worked great to remove all of it.
your videos are awesome, and this is no exception. It will help me a lot when I go and change coolant in my car
Incredible tutorial, very good,it would be great if you do similar service on some petrol engines.Thanx for this video
very nice video thats a proper job, thanks allot. I also like the jack up idea i will keep that in mind next time i do a coolant flush
+Protab Ali Its useful on the XUD or HDI engines to stop an airlock in the coolant system. Although one thing i would advise is a Lisle 24610 coolant funnel. Its from the states and took a bit longer to come but for filling the coolant to get rid of air its fantastic. I did have to make up an adapter to suit the PSA cap used on the 406, an old cap with a hole drilled in it to accept the part of the funnel did the job. With it there is no need to jack the car up or try to seal up a drinks bottle. I used it in the 106 and citroen xsara timing belt videos when refilling the coolant.
If you have a clean bucket to catch the coolant then you can reuse it, but when you have went so far as to take off the thermostat its easy to flush out the old coolant and replace it with new coolant.
However regardless if you use new or old coolant to fill it back up, the system does need to be bled properly.
Proper job and very well made video, Gracias amigo :-)
That is a great video, really clear and comprehensive. Thank you very much.
Have to change my termostat this week. Hope i can make it with this video. I will let you know later.
Nice job, even I can follow that. looking forward to doing the job now.
+Paul Somers Thanks for the comment
Engine Degreaser Spray, and a few old rags.
But with this car i occasionally do give it a blast with the pressure washer, there are a lot of sensors and electrics under the bonnet so be careful, then once cleaned i blow away the water with the airline, and then let it dry with the bonnet open before starting up. Once dried i spray some wd40 on any metal bits to stop them rusting, and silicone spray on any rubber pipes.
Really helpful. Thanks for going to all that effort.
If only Haynes would do a version of their manuals like that.
The HDi 90 as far as im aware is mostly the same engine, the exception being is it has a solid flywheel, no intercooler and the gear ratios are slightly different
i think the procedure for getting to the thermostat housing is the same as on the 110 engine, but the sensor itself is located on the housing where the thermostat is held, ill PM you the diagram showing the sensors location.
Hello, thank you for this video. It is excellent. The only way it could have been improved is to have shown more clearly where the two vent pipes are, that are not on the radiator itself. Have determined easily the vent pipe on the radiator, but NOT the other two.
A fair point thanks, this would be one of my older videos when i had one camera. Hope you still seen where the two other bleed screws were located. Thanks for the comment.
There is a lot of shared parts with the C5 and 406. They are well made cars, ok the odd electrical issue here and there, nothing that cant be fixed, and the acutal feel of the car is very solid.
The old indirect injection diesels are great for veg oil, youd need to get an old XUD engined pug for that.
Though coming from petrol cars i find the economy of my car to be fantastic.
no problem glad it helped
Thank you for great tutorial.
Very helpful video, thank you.
Thanks
thanx for you fast reply, apreciate it.
Im not sure what the normal operating temperature for the SLK engine is, try one of the mercedes owners clubs just to be sure, other owners will be able to say what is normal.
On the 406 it sits at 70-80 when driving easy, if driven hard it will go up to but never above 90.
Can i change the thermostat only without changing the coolant ? and how the sistem vented ? thx
very well taken good
Thanks for the comment
Thanks uncle frank. Glad to be of help,
PC2CV i like that.
As for the C5 ive never actually drove one, at the time i bought the 406 it was a choice between it and the xantia, what are the C5's like?
Great video
Now I have some ideas. Thank you.
Thanks for the comment
Initial trouble I had was a small but gradual leakage of coolant via the water reservoir cap of my 2005 Peugeot 407. Bled and refilled the system as shown in your video. Also replaced the rubber O ring in the cap. Now everything is fine . Thank you again.
The clio is the only petrol car about the place, it needs the coolant flushed at some point so i suppose i could change the thermostat aswell.
However there isnt much difference in the cooling system on a petol and diesel engine they work in the same way.
Ahy you could do it that way, i just did the flush because my mum was mixing different types of coolant.
You will have some coolant flood out but if you dont mind then it should work.
Either the thermostat is stuck, or its gasket is perished, i had a weep of coolant which over a few days can lead to it being empty and then the car overheating.
If my car was overheating i would actually turn on the heater, it seems strange but the heater actually takes heat away from the cooling system. Although in all cases if the needle is pointing in the red stop the engine to avoid damaging the engine.
Is your car a citroen, what model is it?
Thanks for the comment.
Thanks
Speaking of 'spillage' - viewers, please be aware that animals love the taste of anti-freeze, but it will kill them!
Always mop it up immediately.
Really? Just going to find my cats water dish!
True, very good advise. The coolant can crystalize the fluid in our kidney and also animals.
😮😮
I wonder how effective plastic is over cast aluminium thermostat housing. Being a generator mechanic I'm still used to old school diesel engines and have never encountered plastic thermostat housings
The plastic housing on this car developed a leak, i put it off the road and into the shed and then bought a 2.2 estate. Have an aluminium housing sitting to put into the car but its quite a faff to change as the subframe needs to come off to get some of the hoses underneath disconnected. Plastic may be cheaper but it does not age as well as aluminium.
thanks for video friend. Is the liquid you added
completely antifreeze or diluted antifreeze? and how many liters of liquid did
you add in total
Cant remember the exact quantity, the ratio amount varies with each antifreeze for very cold climates you can run antifreeze neat.
However it depends on what the coolant says on its bottle. I didnt provide that detail for that exact reason.
Спасибо!👍
And thank you for the comment
Hi, I have a 406 HDi 2.0 90 W reg. Im told by the greenflag geezer who jacked me up and slid under that the coolant leak is coming from the thermostat sensor septum/gasket/seal.
i believe in my car this is approached from underneath. would the protocol for changing be more or less the same or should i really be going to a mechanic to deal with this problem?
Cheers

Awesome
Jan Kowalski Thanks
If i need change only thermostat, did i must change coolant too ?
I want to just change the thermostat not the coolant yet as it was done during the timing belt and water pump change. Is it just straight forward swap old to new or am I forgetting something
Its reasonably easy to do, a bit of coolant will come out and you will still need to bleed the system to get any air out
my light keeps showing and looks like im loosing antifreeze i might have to try this
all well and good this..but never shown the Heater matrix screw or when to remove it.. remove it before you flush or after or what.
+Craig Rodgers
Ah sorry if it was unclear.
Flush out the system with all of the bleed screws closed, then before you go to refill the system open them all up, fill the system, and the radiator, thermostat housing, and finally heater matrix bleeders will let coolant out, put their respective screws back into place once there is a steady stream of coolant without air bubbles escaping.
+peugeotCitroen2CV is this done on most cars..as I came to here looking to do a fiat stilo. I did my NVQ level 2 mechanics a few years back, but obviously when you add coolant again I get trapped air and gotta squeeze the hose out. but by raising the vehicle it'll stop air getting in? I nees to change my thermostat as it keeps popping and temperature gauge keeps getting cold.
+Craig Rodgers
Jacking the car up is a good way to bleed the car, raises the exansion bottle above all other parts to help bleed out the system, a bit of a design flaw perhaps putting the bottle at a level where it may not get rid of all the air.
I bought one of these funnels however:
www.amazon.co.uk/Lisle-24610-Revised-Ill-Free-Antifreeze/dp/B001A4EAV0
Works far better than the lucozade bottle trick i used here, being a US product i had to modify an old PSA coolant cap to work with the kit by drilling a hole through it, but it does fill coolant very well and makes bleeding the system a lot easier.
Does this apply to Peugeot 407? My Peugeot is overheating displaying stop on the dash when I start the engine.
It will be similar but not the same, the 2.0 8v hdi was not used in the 407 it had a 16v version of that engine with presumably different coolant parts
Is your warning message coming on as soon as the car starts? It could be the coolant temperature sensor
I plan on changing the coolant on a Citroen C4 2.0 petrol. The radiator doesn't have a bleeder but I think it has one on the back, i.e. the heater matrix. Suppose for some reason you can't find a bleeder anywhere after a change, do you just run the engine with the cap off and top off when needed?
Ah there will be bleeders, just take a quick look through google and the forums (ask on french car forum if you have no luck with your search) that will determine where the bleeders are.
i have a '93 peugeot 106 xsi for 8 months now that has a leaking in the heater core inside the cabin, and it doesnt have a coolant reservoir, in the radiator coolant stays to the middle and never on top even if i fill it, i didnt did a bleeding yet (im about to do it now) but it doesnt overheat much after driving for a long distances or in the city the fan works and back to normal. now that ive watced some videos i think that i was wrong thinking that this point is the normal (i had the min-max point of view like in a reservoir) and i need to fill it up to the top. I dont know it doesnt overheat or there is to much air inside the system so even the sensors and gauges show me something wrong? if i have the heater on cool does the coolant flows to the heater core? If not i think i should let it there until i fix it and bleed the system. Sorry for the long comment, i apreciate any help.
Hi, i would recommend bleeding the coolant before driving the car, i cant say for sure if having air in the system will affect the gauges reading its possible that it can. Definatley if you have air in the system the heater not working is normal, i would typically use the heater to test how well the cooling system has been bled because if bled correctly warm air should flow from the interior vents.
Hello again!
Is it ok i change the thermostat without changing the coolant?
Sure is nice to do both on e you start, but is there any problem just changing the thermostat?
You could probably get away with it, i did the coolant on this car at the time as i had no record of the previous change. You could definitely change just the thermostat, just remember to top up and bleed the coolant.
Is it about 4-5 liters of new coolant in case I change all of it?thanks a lot for all your advice!
Hi! How to know, what is suitable coolant? Red or green? The old coolant seems brown..
Marko L.
As long as you fully flush out all the old coolant it is generally ok to use whatever type of new coolant the problem arises when different types of coolants are mixed.
I put 700mills of mineral water in mine...will it be ok?
Hello
Hello! I have a leak inside, the carpet on the left, under the board is wet. what can I look? Thanks! Diesel engine 110 hp.
Hi there,
First question, is it just water or is there coolant?
If its just water the door seals are the first spot to investigate. Set brown card around the doors, front and back. Then wash the car and see what door is letting in water. The membrane skin behind the door can be spilt or not properly adhered to the door letting water in.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV Hello pal! It's coolant, orange coolant, who leak behind pedals .Left carpet is wet and sweet... like sugar.. :)
@@radufilipescu3277 I am guessing you have a left hand drive car? If the matrix leaks here on a right hand drive car its on the passenger side, i do not image Peugeot made a different heater box or heater matrix for left or right hand drive that aspect would be the same.
I am not 100% sure what is involved in removing the heater matrix on a left hand drive car, what parts are in the road, only ever had access to right hand drive 406s. To get the matrix out on them the glovebox can be removed
ruclips.net/video/CbRZS0YKyd8/видео.html
Worst case scenario it may be a bit like the 306 where the dash may need to come out. Best thing to do is ask on the 406 owners club facebook page.
@@radufilipescu3277 That would be a leaky heater matrix unfortunately. Although i have a video on this channel showing how to remove the heater matrix. Albeit on a right hand drive car.
i have a 307 2.0 hdi 135, is the thermostat replacement the same procedure on that engine?
my engine temp never goes above 78c
hope you have the time to reply
Hi, i think that engine is a slightly different engine with a 16v head?
The thermostat shape might be a different part but the basic principle of replacing it should be the same.
Thank you very much for taking the time to reply
Top notch video
I've got a 2001 106 and it says in the manual that the coolant does not have to be changed. This seems ridiculous and surely it's been changed before, but I have no service history that says it has. No leaks or anything though. Can you tell me if that's right? Can't be surely
Is this in the handbook that came with the car or the haynes manual, it doesn't seem right not to change the coolant, 3 or 5 years normally is how often it should be changed.
Is this in the handbook that came with the car or the haynes manual, it doesn't seem right not to change the coolant, 3 or 5 years normally is how often it should be changed.
No it was an online pdf manual. I don't have the original but it's the same apparantly. It's glysanthin G33 originally. Perhaps they were being optimistic at how good it was in 2001.
I will change it soon anyway but it looks very clean so can't be that old. No coolant change was mentioned in the service shedule at all just check and top up
***** You could buy an anti freeze tester they are not too expensive which would provide an indication of how good the fluid is.
Hi , i appreciate all of your videos not just for the 406 but the other videos , it means i can help should a problem arise in general daily life , my coolant needle steadily gets up to between 80 and 90 then dances around for a few miles then stays at around 80 and stays there , it used to sit at 90 all the time no matter what type of driving i did , would this be due to a faulty sensor or the thermostat , difficult to comment i know without seeing the car but just need a general direction to look for , thanks in advance
+loverman2005
I think the 406's normal range is 80-90 anyhow, having said that mine usually sits solidly at the one temperature, the oil temperature gauge if fitted is a useful one in the 406.
The thermostat is easy to change and if its sticking could cause some of these issues, if they persist after the thermostat is changed plug the car into a pp2000 diagnostic machine to see if it has any faults logged, or how the coolant temperature is showing up.
+peugeotCitroen2CV My heater is not working on my 407 and I think it's because the thermostat is stuck open. It takes ages to get up to temperature. Do you have any other ideas of what it could be. Great vid btw
+Aadil Shaikh
When you say it takes ages to get up to temperature is that the heater, or the engine coolant temperature, how quickly does the actual gague get to operating temperature?
Can be the thermostat stuck open its the first and cheapest thing to check, is the 407 a 2.0 HDi?
Another thing i think the 407 does is the heater flaps inside the ventilation unit can break, not sure exactly what happens but i am aware its a common issue on these, there seem to be DIY guides on the internet.
Thanks for replying and yes it is a 2.0 HDi. It takes about 10mins to get to about 70°C engine temperature and doesn't go any higher. The radiator fan doesn't even come on because the car doesn't get even hot enough(I think thats the reason atleast). I am new to mechanics and don't want to start getting into the heater matrix and ripping the dashboard apart. Could it be a clogged heater core and all it needs is a good flush from the two hoses on the firewall?
+Aadil Shaikh
Ah if the engine only gets to 70 then try the thermostat, easy enough thing to change on the 2.0, not sure how the matrix comes out on a 407, but its still fairly new to have a leaky heater matrix.
Change the thermostat, and possibly flush out the old coolant if its the original coolant, refil with new coolant and bleed the system see how things go, that should solve it.
hello, I am getting a "engine fault repair needed" message in my peugeot 407. I did some research and found that faulty thermostat could be a problem. Have you ever seen such a situation?
I haven't really spent much time working on a 406, but this message on the screen could refer to any fault with the engine, a fault code reader would be required to see exactly what the cars on board diagnostic systems see an error with.
I went to workshop for diagnosis and they did the same as you said. According to the error code, its ignition unit that is faulty. Do you have any video about ignition unit installation or can you make one short video please?
Its a petrol 407? I dont have any videos for the 407, i have done one on changing the spark plugs on a V6 C5 but that would be different. Does it have individual coils for each plug?
Yes it is petrol 2.2 sw. It is a whole unit with four legs in line that sits on plugs. Search in google images for "PEUGEOT 407 SW 2.2 FROM 2004 IGNITION COIL LEMARK" .
Just water is not bad coolant system and put thermostat then is wet?
Indeed a fair observation
@@peugeotCitroen2CV so is bad or okay? 😂
@@blablamama5795
Ill be honest i don’t understand the question
pointless that bucket being there more went on the floor
I know this is an old video but can you change this thermostat without draining the coolant ?
Hi, you can change the thermostat without draining all of the coolant out. However, as a fair bit will escape at the same time it is an ideal opportunity to do a coolant flush. If you have newish coolant then if it is captured in a container it could be reused. Ensure that the system is correctly bled after changing the thermostat.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV thank you 🙂
hey I ain't no machcanic what is call where the thermostat gos on
+Izzy A. The thermostat housing, on early hdi's it was cast aluminium, on this one here its some plastic/composite type material doesnt seem to give any trouble but i have a spare aluminium one waiting incase the plastic one ever lets go
Is this same for peugeot 407?
It might be slightly different the 407 got the 2.0 16v engine which is different to this old 8v engine.
isnt the coolant fofr 406 supose to be red?
Initially it may have come with long life coolant, but when flushing out all the old coolant you can decided what type your going to put back into the engine. Problems occur when different types of coolant are mixed.
Never ready with right eqipment tut tut🤔
How many liters do you need to change the coolant?
I can't remember how many litres, i may have bought about 5 bottles of anti freeze from the motor factors at one time, i think almost 3 were used on the 406.
peugeotCitroen2CV 3 bottles of concentrated fluid?
Could have used a better thermostat, theyre not very expensive :)
And also missed the engine block draining screw, which is just above the right side driveaxle, driven by H10 head.
Dont know the actual amount of coolant left inside, but it should be at least 1 litre.
+Tadas Varnelis This thermostat has no problems QH are a reasonable brand for aftermarket parts. This thermostat is still in the car; the temperature stays where it should be no overheating, and on the other hand it does not take long to warm up on a cold morning. So i cant really say the thermostat used here is of poor quality.
I never knew about the coolant drain plug, even on the DW10's i have removed and sitting in the shed, probably would be a good idea to take a look for that plug and drain out the coolant from them if they are sitting.
Although for a coolant flush i still think running fresh water through the system with a hose is far handier, it always seems to get the old coolant flushed out and even if there is 1 litre or so remaining it is fresh water which can help dilute the new coolant.
i need to change the coolant on a peugeot107 petrol how is it done thanks
I have never worked on one, its the 3 cylinder?
Googled peugeot 107 1.0 coolant change
There are a few results and a youtube video from someone else might be worth a look at.
Sorry i cant be any more help on that.
how many liters need coolant for this engine
If i recall correctly i used 2 litres of new coolant and filled the rest of the system with water, however you can add more or less depending on how strong you want to make the concentration.

Approximately 8 litres
