Thanks once again for the support this year everyone, sending lots of love over this "festive" period ❤️
i live in Portsmouth which is also a tier 4 area like yourself in London. We cant travel meet anybody or have anybody come round so a very much quarantine Christmas and time
Would you consider drag race it against Mat and the m340i? Cheers and Marry Xmas :)
What do you think you’d buy? The BMW M340d Touring or the Audi S5 Diesel Avant? That would be a good video!
LEt's be honest. If you're looking for a 340d, you don't buy it for sport performance. Even though it can be extremely fun on a mountain road, the porpouse of this car is to commute like a boss in style, comfort and quality. Now, getting 52mpgs on a 340 is AMAZING. I own a 2014 318d manual and I've been able to get it to 62-63mpgs on a long drive...and that's a car with "only" 140bhp and a 2.0 liter engine. 6 years later you can get close to that efficiency in a much more powerful car. I love this!!
Merry Christmas to you too, Joe. Here's to 2021 being a better year for us all.
Thank you buddy ♥️
Just watching this video and I’ve stumbled across your comment…2021 for sure hasn’t been any better for us all. Still hope you’re alright man. Same obviously goes for you, Joe!
I hopped into my first BMW touring back in 2013. Since then I have purchased two and the M340d is in the pipeline for March 2022. It is a glorious car with the traction and handling of a truly exemplary vehicle. The bit BMW have got right is that many former M3 drivers (myself!) 20Y ago today still want the practicalities, style, tasteful design and performance with our maturing age. It has everything alongside a stylish and great looking car.
WE ALL love the 340i because of the noise, engine smoothnes and stuff but for a REALISTIC and long term usage without hurting your wallet, 340d is the real deal, can't deny that !
That amazing B57 has been powering Police forces daily for year's.
Diesels are hated and despised by the greeneys and Boris's mob, but they make perfect sense for so many reasons. Cheers Joe. Here's to 2021 being a better year for everyone. Best wishes mate. x
Just ordered an m340d saloon in mineral white. I haven't driven one, don't need to, I can tell from your review that I won't be disappointed. Can't wait for delivery this Friday!
According to BMW Website in Germany the difference betweenthe weight of those two cars is "only" about 75kg. 1880kg for the petrol an 1955 for the diesel.
Thanks for sharing such good reviews with us ;) and always interesting to see how the optional packages and the base version differ from market to market
Shame Joe can't for whatever reason get a B3 Touring on the channel. Having driven the RS4 and the M340i, would really be interested in what he thinks of the B3 Touring.
I’ve recently bought a 2018 530d m sport touring after running a 2016 330d touring for 12 months ... I like the 5 series it’s a good car but I will be buying a new model 330d/340d touring once they’re 2 years old and dropped in price a fair bit .. the bmw tourings do everything I need a car to do .. they’re smooth quick enough and reasonably economical.. great vid btw 👍
Sorry to hear about your business. I found your channel a few weeks ago and your personality is made for this. I love watching your videos, very insightful. Keep doing what you are doing and you will leave 150k in the dust in no time.
A much more objective review than we got it in Germany. Here it‘s all about 0-100 or top speed… thx a lot!
Hi Joe, here are the correct weight figures straight from the BMW Deutschland website: 340i x-drive touring: 1880 kg, 340d x-drive touring: 1955 kg. So the difference is definitely not 200 kg but merely 75 kg! And a merry X-mas to you and family......
I guess that means the 48v mild hybrid kit has added about 100kg to the car.
That's very interesting........335d Touring is 1,735kg with 313bhp. I don't think there will be much difference in performance between this and the M340d? The M340d has the mild hybrid extra weight......I wonder if adaptive dampers add much weight? Not sure? I think a pan roof does?
@@PetrolheadTours From what I can gather the weight penalties on the F30 were more or less:
- Hybrid 60Kg
- AWD 75Kg
- Diesel (N57 vs B58) 85Kg
So those figures he quoted are probably comparing a RWD B58 without hybrid system to an AWD N57 with hybrid system.
I have a F31 330d and i can say that it does everything right. I had friends in my car and they didn't believe me when i said them it was a diesel engine. I love that car it's practical and fun to use: it's the perfect daily. Plain and simple.
I already know i'll take a G21 as my next car.
G21 330d?
I love the 340d so much that I’ve just changed my 2020 340d msport for the new 2024 340d msport. I believe the dealer told me this was the last of the diesels hence the upgrade.
One of my favorite RUclipsr reviewing two of my favorite cars on the market right now
Joe, my grandfather was chauffeur to Cary Grant, that and the love for BMW brought my appeal to the channel. It must be tough dealing with the hand that 2020 dealt you, sadly I don’t see business travel getting back to where it was. Thankfully we have been here for you in ever increasing numbers, supporting the channel. I am sure 2021 will see your channel grow and do much more to support you. Hopefully Brexit will not harm your ability to make content in Europe. Have a great Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.
Thank you Steve, very kind words mate! Awesome to hear about your grandpa, it's been a dying trade for a few years now, C19 put the nail in the coffin. Appreciate your support, looking forward to making more content next year! Cheers and have a great Christmas! 🎄
Beautiful car. I love the 3 series touring variants.
Watching this again on smart tv because you make sense and so do the cars we choose . Biggest silent supporter since early. Hollywood will still want that voice over . Best of British! Someday a colab with those Ontario boys would be fab. U could teach them a thing or two
Haha thanks bro appreciate the very kind words! Happy new year!
Interesting to note your comments regarding tyres, I’m now on my second M340d saloon (I absolutely love this car btw), the first of which was on Bridgestones, which for the four months I had it from the end of July I felt were pretty unflappable, the new one is on P-Zeros which for the first 5-600 miles in admittedly horrible December conditions have been fairly horrendous, they tramline all over the place, have nowhere near the same levels of grip and the steering is fussy at best, tbf this has improved significantly with miles and I get the impression they’d be much better suited to the summer conditions.
To answer the weight questions BMW list the following in KG’s for kerb weight without driver;
340i. 1735 saloon & 1805 touring
340d. 1820 saloon & 1880 touring.
Great video & Merry Christmas 👍
Merry Christmas from Germany. I like your tests and tomorrow i will get my 340ix G21 in oxidgrey 😜
When you can shop a car in this segment, go for the petrol. Back in the days where petrol cars had a major fuel consumption over the diesel it will be a discussion. But nowadays that B58 will consume between 8.5 and 10 liters..
Go for the petrol and you will not regret, and you get the sound to.
I’ve you’re in for a x5 or something heavy I should take the diesel because the low torque and the fuel benefit will be al lot bigger in that type of car.
Merry Christmas Joe.
Yes Joe great vid. The 340d has to be the one for me
It will smoke the majority of people whilst being a total wofter and munching miles
Yeah it's a hard choice, but the diesel is just sooo effortless everywhere, very relaxing to live with 👌
I'll take a petrol. Nothing as nasty and rough as a diesel engine, and let's face it with a modern transmission you're never in the wrong gear for more than a split second which makes performance in gear moot.
@@gottliebdee263 You can hardly describe a modern performance diesel engine as nasty and rough. They are super smooth and refined compared to what they were even 10 years ago.
@@gottliebdee263 eh, a 6cyl diesel will be less rough than a 4cyl petrol. A bmw diesel is a work of magic.
@@hello7533 yep my 6 cyl twin turbo diesel it’s a miracle. Insane torque and mpg. At simple stage one that it’s cheap and doesn’t bother the car you get brilliant results. Petrol it’s for pops and bangs 😅 Doubt many people track 340i
M340i for a fun utility car. M340d for long distance road trips for me.
That’s the beauty about Diesel motors, they are much more economical with more torque and last much longer then the Petrol cars.
I like Mercs
I love the dark blue/black rims spec. What a dream car !
It would be a 340i for me. A mix of town and motorway driving (pre COVID-19) and about 10k miles. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Joe, great video, as ever.
Great review as expected on this channel! :)
I drive a poorman's M340d - a facelift F31 335d and I absolutely love it, good spec and a few choice mods make them a very capable car in any weather (agreeably not as engaging to drive as the petrol equivalent) but what a mix of practicality and driving pleasure while being fairly easy on the wallet and reliable.
At third of the price of M340d I'm not even jealous despite a few trade-offs (interior is quite a step up, more rear bias in M340d, overall better suspension, more power from factory, rear seats don't fold via a button).
Just throwing it out there as an option for people that don't want to part with £600 on bank's car every month. ;)
I also got the 335d F31, such a solid car. Super sweet in every driving situation, also on the Autobahn!
This is the point I'm trying to make in some other comments.....realistically the general concept of the M340d has been available to us for quite a few years with the 335d.
Either of these would be a dream for me. Would prefer the petrol but both are exactly what I would want for a family car
I have gone from 320d to 325i to 340i . The 340i petrol is smooth quiet frugal and huge fun with great sound . My garage told me to avoid diesel as I do a lot of town work . Two close friends with 30k on their diesels have both had to replace DPF after 3 years and it is Bank breaker . Petrol all the time for me . Mine was a pretty reg 340 touring shadow i from dealer 26 miles on the clock for £25 k a great deal 12 months ago.
Interesting as I am keen on the M340i and think I will stick to that decision. Feel the residuals on petrol might be better then diesel too. As long as my dog is happy in the back!
Thanks Joe for consistently producing excellent content throughout such a challenging year. It’s clear to see why your channel goes from strength to strength. Look forward to a much better 2021 & have a great Christmas.
Best colour combo (with silver wheels) for the new M3 I think....
Great video Joe! M340d for me. Sorry to hear about your business probs in 2020 but I’m in no doubt you’ll be doing what you love doing in the coming years.....a top UK car reviewer snapped up by one of the TV channels 👍
For starters they're both amazing cars. If I'd had to chose one of them, I'd go for the 40d. Let's be realistic, in day to day driving you mostly use the lower and mid rev range. Hence it's better to have an engine with a big amount of torque, and of course being a diesel it will be more economical. On the other hand what's not to love about the sound of a 6 cylinder petrol engine albeit having turbos.
This is the test I've been waiting for! Thanks for ending the year with another great video!
Great review as always Joe. I’ve had my M340i Touring since June and love it. I agree with your view that it really is all the car you need. The D wasn’t an option at the time I placed my order, but after having several diesel SUV’s I was really keen to get a petrol car while you still can. I totally agree with your summary. I think the D makes more sense if you do a lot of miles but for me fuel cost isn’t a big issue. Hope you have a great Christmas and sorry to hear the chauffeur business is closing down, but hopefully this will free you up to do take your channel to the next level. All the best.
Hi Joe, I'm really sorry to hear about the chauffeur business going down. I can sort of feel the pain as I cabbied/chauffeured an E39 530d for 12 years. On your advice I bought the G30 530d xdrive which I have had now for over 2 years and everyday love it more and more. Done my own coding and maintenance and bought the highest spec available. I hope the channel is enough to keep you in the standard of life you are comfortable with. Best of luck for the new year , let's face it, it can't be worse.
Get it mapped, had mine done and it's running 350bhp 780nm :)
Your eating miles up in the M340d with ease.......can you imagine driving to the French Alps in winter in a fully specced M340d Touring! 😎🙏👌
That's a great video, Joe and having had the fabulous E60 535D for 4 years, I can imagine what a fantastic machine the M340D must be. And, Merry Christmas and a happier, better 2021!
Hoping to place an order with Berry in Jan for an M340i. Thanks for your amazing vids Joe! Always super useful 👍👍👍
Another great video. Merry Christmas, Joe, and all the best for 2021. Having switched from a 435d (also in Tanzanite!) to an M4, I would agree the ‘big six’ diesel with X-drive and switchable auto is a superb all-weather machine. It’s a great powertrain. Fast, economical, smooth and very under-rated. The Touring just adds huge practicality.
In 2020, Joe's channel has been so good, and this video is the perfect example of that. It is brilliant.
Despite the "difficulties", there was a silver lining, and I am really glad I could get my dose of great BMW videos (and decent Audi's 😉).
The coming weeks will most likely be challenging for the South of England. Maybe it is an opportunity for some Live videos...
Haha thanks for the VERY kind words as usual mate! And yes, I have been thinking about a Live video or two 😉♥️👊
@@JoeAchilles1 Thank YOU. You do all the hard work and I/we, the viewers, only put down a few words once in a while.
About the Live, excellent, can't wait 👍
Don't know the meaning of challenging
With the descent to soulless electric power well underway - 100% 340i for the sound - economy just won’t make much difference for the miles I cover so quite possibly my next car :)
The old saying... I cover less miles so I will get the petrol doesn't make sense. The diesel will be cheaper to run in every scenario.
Nice video Joe, I like the final verdict where you said the m340d is better up to 7/10th, and the m340i is better after that, but in my opinion it still is far from a 10/10th car. So my conclusion is that the m340d is better almost all the time, and that's what matters as there are no perfect solutions. Between the two I would take m340d, enjoy the strong relaxed performance and 600 mile range.
Joe any chance couple drag races including 330e... probably boring but intresting if you could... 330i 320d
Brilliant video as always. Absolutely love the idea of this car and would have one in an instant. The 6pot Diesel engines bmw make are brilliant, reliable and pokey. The don’t sound half bad from the inside either. I have a 330d m57 on 181k and will still pull and pull whilst giving good mpg on a run.
I would also quite happily take a 340i for the sound alone and the tunability of the b58, just couldn’t warrant the fuel costs doing the job I’m doing, but would consider it otherwise.
Very much looking forwards to the videos you bring in the future 😊
The challenge will actually be to convince my employer for a 320d or a 330e.
I wish we got the touring variant in the U.S. - I've always loved these, as a do-all sporty hauler.
It's a good argument to be honest. If you had asked the same question 20 years ago, between the naturally aspirated Straight 6 and the 3.0d i think the answer would have been a lot easier. These days I feel like petrol and diesel have grown closer in character over the years, both now have a turbocharged power delivery, both are automatics, the petrol's advantageous "song" whilst still nicer than the diesel has been muted over the years with GPF and turbo etc...they are more similar than they have ever been imo.
Brilliant review as always. Definitely need to do a collab and do a Top Gear style race this vs M340i long distance race including lap of the Ring and back👍🏻 Merry Christmas Joe, all the best
Thanks for the video Joe and Happy Christmas. Seems like a great car, but prices seem to have risen faster than my pay! I picked up a year old 335d touring for £25k it seems like a big jump to what is effectively the successor to my car.
Great review Joe as always! 😍 Do a review on the new Alpina B3 next if you can!
Thanks buddy! Until things in the UK change with ALPINA, there wont be any on my channel, still my favourite brand though!
@@JoeAchilles1 Oh I see! Too bad! May I ask what happened with Alpina in the UK?
Happy New Year Joe.....another great video. The fuel consumption figures are mind blowing for a heavy 6 cylinder estate👌🏼
I love this car. It’s funny that all British car RUclipsrs now seem to be using „Harry‘s road“
I've been using that road since 2017, it's 25 mins from where I live.
Another fantastic and informative video Joe. Thank you. PS I prefer Diesel to Petrol any day!
Great video Joe. I can't believe you sat on that dirty bumper at the start then sat on that ivory leather though haha! I was looking at these models, in the end I bought an F82 M4 Comp.
I don’t know what about you, but it feels a bit awkward buying an expensive diesel in 2021 when everything goes electric and some big manufacturers stop producing diesels at all(like Volvo). Imagine desperately trying to sell this car(340d) in like 4-5 years for 40-50% of car initial value. Would that be possible? If not - that hell a lot of depreciation to handle
200KG difference, wow. Not great news about the business but good news this is providing enough for you. I think I'd opt for the petrol but would take a great deal on the diesel.
I was curious about the weight, so I actually looked it up on the internet. The latest official data from BMW are 1955 kg for M340d touring and 1880 kg for M340i touring (EU weight, so already with 75 kg of load). So not 200 kg of difference, but still quite a gap, and mainly - nearly 2 tons in a 3 series is simply a lot... And just for interest, apparently the M340i was 1845 kg before, so I guess the 48V system adds 35 kg. Merry Christmas to you and let's hope that there are better things waiting for us in 2021 :)
So many great videos this year Joe. All the best for 2021.
Great review Joe. Sorry to hear about the business, all the best for 2021. So I reckon if you’re into sporty cars and it is going to be your only car, you’d have to go for the M340i. In general though, I don’t think estate cars need to be fast - they are for practicality, comfort and economy to me. That said, if you need 1 car to do everything, I can see the point. For 60k you could have a good sports car and a good practical car, so think that’s the route I’d usually take.
Merry Christmas Joe from Portugal, and a fantastic 2021... keep on the good work on this channel!!!
Happy Christmas Joe, keep up the hard work, it’s much appreciated.
m340i 1845kg
m340d 1955kg
540i 1925kg
540d 2000kg
All in estates. So I think you're right, the MHEV system is not a part of the weight in M340i yet. Still crazy that the 3-series is so heavy.
South Wales to Scotland on one tank of diesel (several times), its a winner!
M340i touring. All the car you will ever need!
Happy Christmas Joe. Thanks for the videos keeping us all entertained during this challenging year. Sorry to hear about the business. Here’s to everyone having a happy, healthy and prosperous 2021.
joe all the best going forward- looking forward to the next video
Thank you buddy 👊
Absolutely awesome channel Joe have throughly enjoyed your superb content this year so here's to 2021... Im looking to jump ship to BMW from my Golf R 7.5... stay safe and all the best for the future....
Thank you for your hard work! All the best for 2021! 🍀🙏🏽🙂
I have just gone from a M140i to a M340i touring and it's an amazing car,. I wouldn't consider a diesel though
Was it much more of a step up? I have the m140i and thinking of the 340i touring…. Is it head and shoulders better than the m140
@robwootton1 I found it so much better handling but it is 4 wheel drive . A lot more usable power . It does feel rear bias and lively when driving especially sport and sport plus . Big step up from the m140i . I haven't got the M340i but was missed when I sold it
@ thanks for the reply! I wish my m140i had xdrive then the power could be planted more often, think they missed a trick with that to be honest! Was your 340i better on fuel than the m140, I am getting around 34mpg on average. I know these cars are never gonna get mid 40s but was the 340i better on fuel?
@robwootton1 It was about the same on fuel driving sensible but being very spirited driving it did drink fuel quite quickly. I have got an Merc A45S now and on a motorway drive it's about the same on fuel . I found the M140i just got too unsettled and the damping just couldn't control it . A company called birds do a suspension change which is supposed to be really good
Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thank you for your output this year. Hoping for better things next year.
Serious A to B family car. If I wasnt a sucker for Audi this would be my daily.
I enjoyed watching the Video. I enjoyed supporting your channel this year as I particularly like BMW
The 340D weight, wow, wow, wow.... 1950kg definitely 340i way to go. Nice video cheers Joe.
Best diesel car ever made
Must be up there!
Well I'm more than happy with my f30 335d so far
Great car but seriously the days of 30k + cars are for the masses are long gone. Personally I’d go for the 340i touring.
Favourite channel at the moment 🙌
Sorry to hear about your chauffeur business Joe! Keep doing great videos and I'm sure you will create a larger following in 2021.
I'd love to see you review many other brands, Hyundai i30N for example. More brands, more videos, more followers!
Stay safe and have a good Christmas ⛄🌲
Thanks for the review Joe, as usual quality content.

I’m just about to replace my 2018 440i Coupe (been so brilliant with perfect build quality and reliability) with a M340i as I hate the ugly grille on the new 4-Series. I’ve gone for a Tanzanite Blue, black leather with sunroof, Cerium Grey alloys, Comfort Plus Pack, Technology Pack, Visibility Pack and blue brake callipers.
I would definitely choose this or the M550D as a daily!

Merry christmas to you - looking forward to see more content from you in 2021 best regards, big fan from Denmark 🇩🇰
Great Vid Joe - Ive got a 330D M-Sport X-Drive Tourer, absolutely love it..... from strong MPG to strong performance (when needed) + carrys the family, pets and bikes - What more could I want from a car! My PCP is ending in Oct 21, so keen to avoid the trend of moving to an SUV - I love the fast, nimble estates. Thinking I might go same again with an 18mth old 330D from BMW dealer, think the added weight/performance of the 340D a little excessive. Thoughts? Cheers Stanners
I have m340i and honestly nothing comes near it Absolutely a machine it is and i can imagine how naughty this m340d is as previously ive had 330d and that was very quick. Personally in my m340i im getting 70/80 miles on 20 litres local / motorway.

Such great reviews as always! I love all the camera angles and the fact you clean them which in winter is a pain.
I wonder how the governments anti diesel and petrol policies will effect these cars in the future?
My sister sold her 240i yesterday because it was so unusable in the slightest winter weather, x drive from now on I guess.
Hello Joe, thanks a lot for the great review. Is the M340d Touring in Comfort setting more comfortable than a G31 5 Series?
Ps Joe Merry Christmas and my pick for the M3 would be 2b. Great videos keep them coming.
I wish BMW would bring these to Aus. Best I can do is an x3 m40 if I want a smaller wagon with the b58. Close but not the same.
