  • In this weeks video I take my own M340d Touring out for review and explain what its like in comparison with our past F31 330d and 335d M Sport Touring. I discuss the advantages of the MHT in the later models and also the features and benefits running the car in Adaptive mode. It truly is a revelation!

    Great video James, Ive owned and driven the M340d for nearly three years ( having ran the 335d previously for four years ). I run around most of the time in sport individual even though I live in a rural area with B roads ( with transmission on comfort due to jerky gear changing ). I find it fine and comfortable and it seems to weight up the steering ( change to comfort when parking / in a multi-storey etc ). It is definitely more refined than the 335d in my opinion, nicer cabin as you eluded to. Heads-up-display Ive had on both is a must in my opinion, never have to look at the speedo / or sat nav if its set because its right there for you. Average around 41mpg. Brilliant car!

      Thanks Steve! We've since moved to an Alpina D3S which is just a more silky special version of the already brilliant M340d. In fact, it took me a week to decide to make the chance while we had both in stock.

    Awesome review mate 👍🏻 I’ve currently got the 320d Tourer and I was considering changing to an SQ5, but you’ve made my mind up that I need an M340D

      Thanks! The SQ5 is a nice SUV, but it doesn’t come close to an M340d. You’ll love the change !

      @@JamesGlenCarSales1982 definitely a different driving experiece. The G30 was/is a great car and super comfortable although the engine was very underpowered for the size/weight of the car. Great for cruising on the motorway but just lacked guts when needing a burst of pace for overtaking etc.
      The M340d though is an absolute beast of a car. Driving experience is much sharper and adaptive mode definitely helps on twisty A roads. The engine is just utterly insane with the amount of torque it produces. Pulls without issue at any speed and any gear - I also like how there are only very subtle differences to a standard 3 series so, unless you know anything about cars, it goes under the radar.
      Only downside is i find the seats a little firm and takes quite a bit of adjustment until I found a comfortable position.
      How did you find the seats and car generally? (Appreciate you've likely covered lots in your video!).

      @@JamesGlenCarSales1982 call me crazy but I couldnt gel with the M340d and swapped it for a 530d G31 after only having it a few weeks. Slightly slower but a better car in many other ways.

  • @SUPPS2GO
    @SUPPS2GO 3 месяца назад +2

    I have a 2018 335d that’s been mapped so similar torque to this but slightly higher horsepower. The acceleration is crazy. Seems like every gear change the car just gets even more powerful. I am looking to swap to a 340d soon. Just because it’s newer.

    • @JamesGlenCarSales1982
      @JamesGlenCarSales1982  3 месяца назад +1

      That's my exact experience with the old 335d too. They're still quick, even without the map! All I would say is, don't expect the newer model to feel quicker, because they certainly don't feel it. It feel like a more polished, and more expensive car, beautiful to look at and be in, but not just quite as 'sport' as the out going model.

    Great video. Thanks. I'm looking to buy one in Feb 2025 when I use a small 40k pension to purchase one. Great description of the adaptive suspension, v interesting! Yes it is tight of BMW to need a subscription for the adaptive lights on a 50k plus car! Anyway, drooling at the thought of owning one...currently F31 touring 320D X drive....huge upgrade!

    Was hoping you'd do a vid on this at some point Stephen, especially as the current owner of a G20 M340i.
    I opted for the B58 over the diesel lump as I do very few miles but, in hindsight, I agree that the diesel is probably the right engine for the car. I don't think the B58 really offers anything particularly worthwhile over the diesel; it's marginally quicker, on paper at least, and it probably sounds a bit better but, as you said, it's not a sports car so I'd go as far as saying the B58 is slightly at odds with the character of the car. Couldn't agree more on the tyres - I did exactly the same thing and immediately binned the absolutely god-awful P Zero runflats in favour of PS4 S. They were transformative.
    It's a good daily but I'm probably going to move it on early next year. Might bring it round before I sell it, maybe a Jimmy Glen review/comparison vid in the making!

      @EatMy50Cal 6 месяцев назад +2

      You‘re actually the first one I’ve come across who doesn’t hype the B58 unnecessarily. Yes, it might be the better sounding and more emotional engine, but the B57 is a fantastic engine too. Interesting to see some more „based“ opinions on this topic.

    • @JamesGlenCarSales1982
      @JamesGlenCarSales1982  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Paul, yeah that would be good to see what the 340i is like back to back with the 340d and you're welcome to try it in reverse to see what you think. The B58 is a great engine, no doubt, but for me the M340d just ticks every box whilst still being a fairly rapid device while sounding okay and not costing more to run that it really needs to be.

    Great video but I shudder to think what the insurance premiums are as mine has just doubled. I agree that the quality of the interior is a step up over the previous one. This model has a nice HUD which is something initially I thought was a gimmick on my BMW but now could not imagine living without.

    • @JamesGlenCarSales1982
      @JamesGlenCarSales1982  6 месяцев назад

      Its amazing how much you get use to having the HUD isn't it! As far as insurance goes, everythings up so I would rather pay a bit more for a car I want/enjoy than a bit less for a car I don't.

    I've got a modified M240i which is the main reason I went for the b58, but I think BMW have left Audi and Mercedes for dust this gen

    • @JamesGlenCarSales1982
      @JamesGlenCarSales1982  6 месяцев назад +1

      For me, Mercedes haven't been in the running for a long time. Their plasticky interiors and questionable engines are a major let down on anything below an E-Class (which is still a lovely car). The Audi S4 TDi I reviewed on here was very very good though. Interior was epic and handling was very, un Audi! Nice steering and blistering performance, but the drive train and looks of the M340d still put it ahead in my opinion.

    There are plans for the data gathered to be given to insurers or even police.
    Already happened in usa chrysler installed "games" you could take part in where your driving style was scored, turned out they were passing the data to insurers.
    Yet another thing we were told would never happen.

    I have one. Incredible performance. Had 760 miles on one tank too. Having done 400k miles in 330D’s over the last few years I agree the F31 RWD 330D was my fave. Up to 45k miles since buying it and other than tyres and servicing it’s been pain free. It does lack excitement though. The lack of a real exhaust note (I know it’s a diesel) is a down side but 30k miles a year meant a 340i wasn’t really practical.

    • @JamesGlenCarSales1982

      Hi Martin, thanks for the feedback and great to hear I'm not the only one that sees the 2WD 330d F31 as the sweet spot. The G21 is a car that has many many upgrades over the F31, but in all honestly, the driving part is the area thats seen the smallest improvement imho. But as I say, its not a sports car, so I'm sure I'm probably in the minority! Still, a lovely thing and beautifully crafted so not all bad!
