Midnight Star gave us some classic bangers! Electricity..... Headlines........ Playmates.......Body Snatchers..... Midas Touch.... Scientific Love.....Curious......Freak A Zoid......One of my favorite bands
My 1st Major Concert was the GAP BAND ft (MIDNIGHT STARR) & New Edition in 84'. 3 Platinum + Artist. They All Killed it!!! Was 13 & Still remember it like it was yesterday!!
It is amazing what musicians in the 70s and 80s went through. So many people got the shaft. But so much great music came out of this era. Midnight Star is definitely in the top ten of R&B acts of 1982-1986.
2023 & i Still Bump Wer My Whistle!! You at an Old School party of your Momma & Dem put on "No Parking on the Dance Floor" & Watch them Old Folks Cut up!! 🤣
My First Concert in Indianapolis with Midnight Star & The Gap Band and Roger with Zapp & Shirley Murdock and some cats called Ready For The World that was 1986 still jamming in 2024🎉
I made a mistake emergency one of my favorites was written and played by Leon silvers he was killing the studios back then he wasn't no joke..played the strings off that bass guitar
I was surprised they said Calloway wrote I ant to be rich. I was a kid when that came out. I never knew who signed it. The was a huge crossover smash that hopefully paid them well
As a teen I thought their song "Freak-a-zoid" was amazing. Calloways was smart to go into producing established acts like Teddy Pendergrass, Gladys Knight, etc.
Thanks for a great video, Urban TV!! Yes, indeed, Midnight Star was a bad azz band back in the day. They gave us some real beautiful, memorable songs!! Can't help but wonder how great they'd be were they able to hold on to the vibe' they had!! 👏🏾🎶🥁🎼🪘🎵🎺👏🏾
You're welcome and check out some of the other videos we have on our channel including the Isley Brothers! Smokey Robinson will be released today as well!
I like to think "Midnight Star" although they did electro funk.....there sound had some early hip hop influence to their sound. Songs like "Operator", "Freakazoid" & "Tuff" are fine examples to break dance too....if you like "Midnight Star". Check out "Newcleus", "Manna Parrish", "Bernard Wright", "Herbie Hancock" & "Oran Juice Jones. All these groups there sound made great break dance music...... 😎🎧🎤😎🎧🎤😎🎧
Best non-MPLS Funk band of the 80s....their brand of vocoder-funk was unique. Also perfect slow-jams....both equally great by the same outfit - outstandig!
I never worked with these guys but they are good.. I started out with the BarKays, Kool and the Gang, Cameo, Prince, Lionel Ritchie, Luther Vandross, Gladys Knight, and Mothers Finest, So many bands get so close to making it but being in a band is like having 8 wives, most self destruct. Thanks for the video.
Dispite the conflict of interest issue, the remaing members seem SOLID AS A MoFo! You never here anything overtly messed up about Midnight Star. They just keep working hard. I have so much respect for the remaining members.
Let their feelings get in the way. There was a natural conflict of interest with your mother as manager and bookkeeper. The Callaways should have accepted this and hired a new manager everyone could trust.
Belinda Lipscomb is my 1st cousin. Her grandfather and mine were brothers. Midnight Star did not make alot of money like our family thought they did. Our family was so upset with Belinda, because her mother Betty Lipscomb was driving around in a old white beat up Cadillac which her mom had years before Midnight Star ever hit the scene. While we thought Belinda was very successful, and we also knew she loved her mother and couldn't figure out why she would do her mother that way. Her mom did eventually get a new car, Belinda found time to come around family on holidays, but for me, she was an ordinary family member, she was never a celebrity to me. Last I'm hearing she has a talk show in Cincinnati.
Are you sure that wouldn't make you second cousins, actually?.. Seems like Brenda's parent, and your parent would be the first cousins?? ...Enjoyed your story and comment
Y'all my daughter went to KSU (2011-2015). She called me one weekend and asked me who Midnight Star was. I asked her what does she know about them. She laughed and said nothing, they are going to be at the homecoming. I was shocked they were still performing (2012-13). Had to let her know!
Uh, some were from Cincinnati because the Calloways lived right next to us. Oh, okay I see you said it. Okay, I'm with you, now. Thanks for the great video.
Even a million dollar signing bonus aint nothing for a 9 member group. Thats $111,111 a piece before taxes and management getting their cut. I hope the group charged at least $90,000 per show, so they can get $10,000 a piece
@James-qe8fz a band with 14 members? NO Way NO How!!! I would only join a band with that many members is if I'm just doing it for fun, its not my main money maker
I remember them live at the carter barron in wash DC in the mid 80s not sure the exact year. I was on a date with a singer named Gisele jackson an unknown. Whos now known in Europe. A back ground singer of donna summers..
Not sure why the band members had to secretly look at the books. Management should have the books freely available for all band members. The lure of money brings people together. The possesive nature of money tears people apart. 😢
@papabear9608..Sho ya right..The Bar-kays..EW&F..Ohio Players..Brass Construction..BT Express..Starpoint..Atlantic Srarr and Slave just to name a few. The music and self contained bands of that era was str8🔥🔥 and untouchable.👍🏼💯💯😎
You don't need to put "Because of This" in the Title..It's always Money, Drugs and Individuality I thought they were from Atlanta Ga. In the end , I'd glad to see drugs weren't involved.
When Babyface wrote Slow Jam, he was already in The Deele. Solar gave Bo & Belinda let them sing as a duet on the track. Standing Together, No Parking, Planetary Invasion, Headlines were like gold and platinum albums. The Billie Jean inspired song "Night Rider" is always my joint.
I see the Calloway brothers remained on Solar for that first album. I also noticed Melvin and Belinda got writing credits on the single. I wonder how that worked out…I can only assume this was a song that may have been intended for the group right at the time the brothers were thinking about leaving. Hmmm…🤔

I like "Operator" and "Electricity" and "No parking on The dance floor"

Sorry to say this but having MOTHER control the books was a big conflict of interest...the train wreck cometh and eventually cameth!!
They weren't too happy about that!
1st big mistake
Curious, what a tune 👊🏾
The mother was paying them but probably not all the money that was owed them

Although it wasn't mentioned, Reggie Calloway also produced the first Deele album, of which came LA and Babyface!

I can see why the single "Body Talk" sounded so much like a Midnight Star cut

9 members is too much IMO. Imagine splitting $100 amongst 9 people!

Just Can't imagine getting $9 and change after a show lol
