No matter what this jolly little song says, in Greece the name ''Istanbul'' does not exist. And as long as Greece and Greeks exist, it will not exist. Not because we are as delusional* as to believe that some day it will be Greek again, especially since it is now inhabited by 15 million Turks, but it is a matter of history. It is a matter of language as well. The name ''Istanbul'' is the corruption of a phrase Byzantine Greeks used, when refering to their city. They used to say ''eis tin poli'' meaning ''to the city'', or ''in the city'' as Konstantinople was THE city, for them. Thus, a byzantine Greek, when asked ''where are you going'' or ''where do you live'' he would respond by saying " eis tin poli" . In fact, the 5.000 thousand (approximately) ethnic Greeks who are still left in Constantinople**, still use the phrase ''eis tin poli''. The Turks turned that into ''Istanbul'' and some even stubbornly claim that it means ''where Islam is abundant''. But in any case, in Greece we speak Greek, not Turkish, so we can't call it ''Instanbul''. *Greece is a peaceful modern democracy and a member of the European Union. As such we do not claim land beyond our current borders, although we are determined to defend what is ours, if attacked. **In the beginnings of the 20th century, more than 150.000 ethnic Greeks lived in Constantinople. By the beginning of world war 2, Turkey had managed to force two thirds of the Greek population, to leave for Greece. In the 50s, using as an excuse the then crisis in Cyprus, they expelled the rest - about 50.000 - leaving eventually, only about 5.000. Since - regretfully so - Turkey even today, has not really become much more democratic and human rights respecting, or less territory demanding towards us than it used to be, we fear that it may be just a matter of time, before they get rid of the rest.

+negative man It didn't happen millennia ago, it happened in 1930. There's still millions of people alive today who were alive when Istanbul was Constantinople. As for the Muslim conquest of Constantinople, that happened only 563 years ago. Hardly caveman times, but in the beginning of the Early Modern Era. The city was the capital of the Christian Byzantine empire and Eastern Rome for 1,400 years before that, and it's conquest by the Turks was brutal. It's no wonder historical memories are still raw.

Ok but 90s kids are still lost. I guess there's way too much sh going on in ny. ,,, The taco guy of putting on the ritz comments brought me here. Tried to hear this from the top of my head 😅 & nope. All I hear is something fast. Now that I'm here, the violin? Is the loudest. But I guess I can't be distracted by what's going on w/ umbrellas. 🤷🏻♀️
when I was in college, we had a medieval dance club that I loved being part of, and one of our favorite dances was always performed to this song. Twenty years later, hearing this song takes me to my happy place every time.
Who knew there would be so much political tension in the comment section of a Tiny Toons video

+Inkwell Presents: Inkwell!
Principally because it's about something that happened millenia ago.
Arguing about what happened in constantinople nowdays is like arguing about which tribe of cavemen learned how to make fire first: it's *just a liiitle bit* too late to discuss that subject now.
+Соɾу ℛ. I like the Turkish people that I've met and, from I've read of Ataturk I have respect for him, but Erdogan? I'd shit on him!
+negative man
It didn't happen millennia ago, it happened in 1930.
