  • There are always a lots of "if, then" answers when it comes to martial arts and self defense. Kicks are no different. BUT are kick heavy styles like Taekwondo, Karate, Muay Thai, and more BAD for self defense? Some push Kicks, Side Kicks, Roundhouse kicks are strong and sturdy kicks! Here are some reasons you should or should NOT throw Kicks in a street fight! (My answer usually is do not...)

Yo sensei, I've trained in karate, taekwondo, and Muay Thai for my kicks. I only throw head kicks in street fights when they are too tired to hold up a guard. I usually throw left leg to liver or knee stomps and prefer my boxing and wrestling in those situations. The young guys at the gym always ask if a head kick is a good way to end a street fight quick. I answer with "unless you kick as fast as Bruce Lee, it will end quick for you"

Where I live, not so very long ago, if you go out, you will get into a fight 100%. Anyway, times change, tactics also change, now there is RUclips, UFC, Buakaw... In my time, when one went down, the fight was over. Now it is different, but the key for surviving is the same: finish it as soon as possible. Low kicks wear people down but do not finish.

Great information. My first Sensei used to tell us to never kick above the waist(hip) in a streetfight. He also reenforced avoiding a fight. Sensei had great abilities with his kicks since he originally trained in Hapkido in Korea and then later learned Goju-Shorin in NC. Although his kicks were at the same level as yours he emphasized kicking low in the street. Bill Wallace recommends practicing kicks barefooted and with different types of footwear on different ground surfaces in one of his books.

1 - because the opportunity presented itself.

My body was stiff and tired from the weather and the walking (especially my legs). A thought that kept going through my mind was if I was attacked would I be able to defend myself and what techniques would I use. Remember to practice scenario training. Practice sometimes in street clothes, in uncomfortable environments, and when you are tired and really don't feel like training. BTW I hope you are staying safe.

Did a similar video too! Love everything you said 🙏. Also, for all the casuals on here talking about groin kicks...yes, obviously it's a good target BUT you need to know either 1. How to set up the groin kick with other strikes or 2. How to follow up with strikes AFTER the groin kick. Basically, you can't just rely on the groin kick because it's "a good target." You gotta set it up just like any other strike.

The last and hopefully final street situation I was in was in 2007. The guy was much bigger but also older so I figured most likely slower so I decided when and if it came to blows I am going to rely on kicks and movement to take reach out of the equation while still trying to maintain some distance. It didn't last long as he squared his shoulders up and charged straight at me. I took a side step and threw a front leg roundhouse kick to his solar plexus and followed that up immediately with a right cross. It was really just instinct. All that pre-fight thinking didn't amount to much. Instinct and muscle memory took over. If you train right and you put in the work things work out. Any simple technique whether it's a kick, punch, throw or submission can work in a fight if you train well and execute it correctly. What I did wasn't fancy or pretty but it saved me from getting my ass whooped with little thought and little effort.

Great subject to cover. Ive been training high kicks for years. But In a street situation I wouldn't kick anything higher than my waist. Just a snapping motion only really to serve as a distraction if any kick was to be thrown. But In training legs you can move and angle faster, apply flexible juijitsu moves or advanced throws and if it's a drawn out fight you have the option of chopping down bigger opponents using kicks. Even just having a stronger stance and balance is always a good pay off from training kicks.

In the later days i faked with kicks because i present the nut kick which as icy mike might say that's something all guys think about (not a quote). The Leg kick into trip then shoot....man that is so effective since i move forward for submissions. All my actual streetfights involved me facing off against a wannabe MMA guy/weapon guy who thinks lifting the leg off the ground looks good. No kicks when you on your back....That being said being the bag guy in my dojo I've felt those kicks from Olympic level athletes....and yeah that sand trick we learnt in JKD and silat....Sensei your versatility thinking is inspiring. Also another idea is using kicks for shooting/tackles and clinch stuff. Also in the age of Social distancing...kicks keep the desired separation effectively lol

Technique is difficult to describe well through text but I'll do my best here.
A safe and smart time to kick is when you intercept their punching arm from their outside. Roll their arm so their palm is facing up. Pull them towards you and kick them in the side. You'll break ribs. He can't hit or kick you because he's facing the wrong way in an arm bar. His free hand can't even reach you without tearing his rotator cuff. Fighting is very situational so I'll highlight a couple below
*He punches with left, you left step and catch punch with left hand. You roll his arm up during the interception, pulling him towards you, side kick with left foot to side of ribs. kicking low is ineffective here.
*He punches with left, you left step and catch punch with right hand. You roll his arm during interception so palm is facing up. Side kick to ribs with right foot. Note: Alternatively his knee can be stomped from this position. Or his elbow can be broken if you keep rotating his arm forward and drive you right knee up into it.
Mirror these rules for intercepting a right punch.

Seth I too can be contradictory especially with kicks, but there's a time and place for it. In a fight it's important to keep it basic, something low risk (like you said) because not everyone is on that level even if so it's still safer stick with curtain kicks and avoid others. The subject of kicks is a tricky one but some kicks can easily cripple or kill if it land.

There's also one more point to consider....
Even, when stars are aligned right and one could land a devastating kick to the head should one?
When you don't have control where your opponent is going to fall chances are you both land into bad places, you to jail, him/her grave.
Self defence is NEVER simple matter, things can go wrong in court wether you were wrong or right.
Granted a rather be judged by three than carried by six.

What're your thoughts on a straight kick to the knee? That's probably your longest range attack and can cripple an opponent's leg if it lands right. If it doesn't land properly, at least the opponent has to be on defense as you close the distance to hit with something else.

One of the main tricks to use kicks in street confrontations , is to hide the movement . Kici without geting your knee all the way up , when your foot is at level with the knee of your standing leg you kick high , turn your hook kick into a side kick and beware of question kicks they only seem to work with people with no traditional training

In one of my first "streetfights" I kicked an Idiot with a front push kick on the chest, while he was running at me. 😺
But you are right about many things in the video.
I myself hate teaching "self-defense" but when people ask about it, I always try to be honest, since I worked in "security jobs", showing them mostly front (push and snap) kicks, low kicks and very much kneestriking for clinching and close distance.
But the most important thing is, since I did this myself when I started working in security jobs: Doing a daily workout, with 30 minutes of shadowboxing, frontkicks and kneestrikes (nothing fancy) for cardio, do another 30 minutes of strength straining, get a shower and sing the Ducktales Theme (okay, the Ducktales Theme is not important, but it sounds good under the shower). The casual 2-3 days a week doing something in the gym or dojo, may not be not enough to be get routine in striking, balance and knowledge of your own skills. In the gym or dojo you get the needed sparring and impact training, but to kick and punch as safe as possible, you should work on it almost every day.

I was in a situation once where a kick I threw was caught, and since the other guys was so big (and I weighed probably 40-50 lb at the time) he just threw me away. The next day I tried the same thing except instead of fully extending the leg that was on the ground I kept it in a sort of crouched position. While I could not kick as high as I usually could, when he caught it (again) I used the crouched leg that was on the ground to jump toward him and kneed him in the crotch before he could throw me. Now I always make sure to crouch when I’m kicking, just in case.

I've used the teep effectively a few times, it's great for creating distance, when people don't know to expect it it pushes them back very far and can wind them without causing too much damage.
I've thrown a few roundhouses, they caused damage every time but DIDN'T create distance, i'd put it up there with body punches, but more dangerous for both parties.
I ended up in court last time i threw a roundhouse, it broke a couple of the guy's ribs, but at the time it seemed to have no effect at all.

when people are walking up all puff chested, spartan kicks will get their attention real quick when you push them 10 ft away onto their ass.
When theyre squared up/balanced, oblique kicks make them lean forward and immediately leave their face open for a variety of punches.
If theyre leaned back, a strong kick to the ankles will make them lose their balance fast, opens a lot up.
Kicks can be very effective if you know what youre doing

I am lucky enough to have never been in a street fight, but as a guy, I am sure we have all had those "dude I would totally win in a fight" arguments with our buddies that turn into a hard spar for fun (or maybe people I know have a weird sense of the word fun). I have learned that a good leg kick or front kick (my only two solid kicks) are fantastic when used once. Hit the leg once. Then show it afterwards to open other stuff up. It is crazy how much people fear a hard kick to the leg. So much so that almost anyone will naturally drop their hands or pick a leg up to protect it. Of course just messing around with friends I would always just use that as a chance for a take down or a light body shot, but it seems like it could be valuable to setup a punch in a real fight

Almost every time a kid throws a kick, that same person gets slammed on his ass and worst case scenario he smashes his head off the concrete and he’s out cold. Then again it was brawls, 1 one 1 fights I was in. Street fights are so freaking dangerous.. Please always avoid concrete. Don’t act like you’re the toughest person in the world. Make sure you get on grass if you need to fight someone do not do it on concrete. You could easily kill someone

Also, i have the body of a t-rex, my legs look like the legs of a sumo wrestler, while i have the arms of a girl... wich means my kicks are my best option to deal damage, and i can usually drop grown male adults with them, when they manage to get pass my legs, i go for a grip and throw them down with a "judo type throw"(wich i have learnt im either bjj, bujinkan, shotokan karate, sanda or soo bahk do) and follow it up with a stomp to use my leg strength advantage

Fights can start in any way. Those were not good examples, because the opponents were away, prepared with hands up and so on. Usually fights do not start like a sparring situation. The best time to kick is in the very beginning of the fight, when the opponent is not prepared. When he has managed the distance for what he does and put his hands up, it is not a good time. Point for the clothing was correct and very important, there is also the restriction of space and ground. You just can't kick in closed spaces and when not on solid ground. As for the aim: head is the best aim, because a good kick finishes the opponent. Of you can kick the head with a roundhouse, kick it. Front kicks for the middle as a distance management kicks, low stop kicks to the shin or low kicks. Side kicks and spinning kicks require more skill. Last 3 street fights when I used kicks, I hit the head first with right roundhouse. The fights were over after the kick: the opponents were either down or gave up.
