I'm 44 and I have been running around in the woods since I was old enough to walk. Two days ago my friend and I were kayaking down a river in NW Arkansas and he spotted some unusual trees growing along the river bank. We climbed up the bank and lo and behold, there was a paw paw patch. We picked over 50 of them. Until that day I had only seen two paw paw trees in my life, the one in my Grandma's backyard and one in a yard in the city I live in.
My Grandma, who passed away a few months ago on my birthday, used to sing this all the time. She got me to start singing it as a very young child. She would always say, "Where, oh where, is sweet little Jimmy?" Funny thing is, my Grandpa's name was Jimmy. I called them MawMaw and PawPaw. I had no clue that a PawPaw was an actual plant, so I took the song literally. "Pickin' up PawPaw's, puttin' em in your pocket." I always envisioned a patch of actual PawPaw's. I often wondered how I would fit PawPaw Jimmy in my pocket? 😂😂 Anyway, thanks for posting this! It brought back some fun childhood memories! RIP MawMaw JoAnn and PawPaw Jimmy, I miss you both!! -Tessa in Arkansas
I love this! The first time that I remember hearing this song was when Mr. Greenjeans sang it on Captain Kangaroo.
Picked up paw paws today while singing this song

Why this song popped into my head , I have no idea.
Listened to this song after me and my dad found a paw paw patch out back in the woods. All American fun
